The food is great always fresh, served with excellent service and very simple but elegant ambiance

This was certainly an unexpected find. During a conversation with an Indian couple about the difficulty of finding restaurants from our home country that satisfies (I've never really found a Filipino restaurant to match my dad's cooking) they mentioned this was one of the very few places in town that reminded them of a "home cooked meal." You have to drive past the the imposing New Asian Village and a blink-and-you'll-miss-it sign off the side of a small complex, to find Shafi. It's a small place, and like some of its bigger and more commercial cousins, offers a buffet. But, the Indian couple quickly dis missed it in favour of ordering ala carte, which is what my husband I ended up doing. We were also warned of wait times (as it was truly home cooked), so we quickly ordered vegetable samosas to start off with while we pondered what to order for dinner. I'm not an Indian cuisine connoisseur, but I can easily say they were the best samosas I've ever had. The chutney sauce with the chickpeas were paired very well with the pastry and veggie filling. I'm glad we ordered enough for two. For dinner, we ended up ordering lamb chops (for me) and tandoori chicken half (for him) and we were asked if we would like to have it as spicy as they normally had it or milder. Of couse, we said as they normally have it! In short: the meal was very satisfying and it did feel like we were eating at someone's home. Very tasty, though I wish the lamb chops were a bit more substantial, as they were thin. But, the sweet and spicy sauce it was grilled with made sense. My husband attacked his tandoori chicken with relish. No complaints from him, either. It's a small space, and the service by the only (?) person in the place was quite affable and jokey. You may also end up being the only couple besides another, so don't go for the ambiance. I will go again to try more from their ala carte menu. Just remember to avoid the buffet. read more

My wife got the goat biryani and loved it. Nice and tender meat and it was moist. Spicy but not too spicy. They brought out fresh veggies and a little yogurt plate. I had the butter chicken with only chicken breast (my request). The chicken wasn't cooked well enough and the butter chicken sauce was too yogurty and sour. I didn't love it. Next time I'll get the chicken tikka or a red meat dish. read more

The way I see it. You come here if there is absolutely NO option left in Edmonton. The food is stale, there is a severe lack of options, there buffet is so tiny it shouldn't even be CALLED a buffet. I have given it a few chances and it astounds me how he keeps the place running, he has extremely few customers, the place is almost always empty. Go to Shan E Punjab, or New Asian Village or Dawaat or the many other better options in town. Shafi Bakery is a disgrace. read more

This place is no frills--the decor is simple, and the furnishings quite basic like a cafeteria. But, behind the kitchen doors is a great surprise where authentic East African Indian good is made with tremendous care. The food is authentic. And unlike chain Indian restaurants in Edmonton, each dish has a unique flavour. Authentic saag. Caring service. Chapali is a spicy surprise. Munch on plantain chips. Have tender tandoori chicken. The chili fish was very savoury. The food takes a while yo come out. But expect to have your patience rewarded with fresh ingredients in this mom and pop restaurant. Order off the menu. Would give a 0 if possible. I had a major craving for qorma so I made an order through skip the dishes and the order arrives on time. My order on the other hand was literally drenched in oil, ok not a big deal accidents happen. I had ordered the Goat biryani, mutton qorma, raita, and 2 naan. I realized the source of the oil spill was from the mutton qorma which is really weird because qorma a YOGURT based dish and should in no way have oil like that spilling out of a container. So not only did I not get the dish I ordered I didn't even get edible food. I paid Almost $15 for a container of oil with about 5 chunks of goat in it. I called the restaurant to ask if maybe they got my order wrong when I learned that it was my fault and I should know that they don't carry mutton qorma (it's a whole other region that makes it) and I should have made a comment when I clicked on the option for the MUTTON QORMA (on their menu) and made a special comment specifying that is the item that I wanted but I still wouldn't have gotten it because in no way do they make it. The owner was the most rude and arrogant individual that I have come across in a long time. Took no responsibility and blamed the mistake on myself and skip the dishes he just kept making excuses and changing the story between me not making any comments on my order and it's Skips fault because that's not his menu . My husband and I visit this place to eat uncle's Nihari and Chicken Karai. Recently they started offering East African menu and it's really delicious. This place is very authentic and all I can say is the food and the service is great. In addition, there is a Paan guy who makes the best Paan. Nothing compares to having a Paan after a delicious meal. So yes yes highly recommend this place:)) read more

Best food, especially karhai, Biryani, Beef curry and fish pakora. Naans are so crunchy too. However, the buffet is not big and the decor is not that fancy as well. But the food doesn't let you think about that. read more

I went to Shafi tandoori grill several times with friends because they insisted that the restaurant makes great whole Tandoori chicken. Each visit I noticed that the buffet was either unavailable or dishes were empty looking. Most of the dishes that I tried off the menu other than whole Tandoori chicken were a disgrace, and bad value for one's hard earned money as they seriously lacked in taste and quantity. The owner works here all the time, I think that the restaurant does not generate enough revenue to justify cost of hiring staff, no surprise!!. In my two visits out of the three the Tandoori chicken was very delicious. Third time I took my family and ordered the Tandoori chicken as usual and this time the chicken tasted different, looked different, was yellow and to make matters worse, very much burnt. The size of the chicken was small as well. The most notable thing which speaks about the pathetic attitude, worst customer service, a sub par dish and a poorly managed and run restaurant is that the owner himself had the audacity to serve such an unappetizing preparation to us by his very own hands. My daughter who is a big fan of butter chicken was also greatly disappointed to see the skimpy portion of her order, the portion size was less than acceptable for even one person and the dish in taste was no where close to butter chicken. I pointed this out to the owner, wondering how my tandoori chicken changed so much in taste, appearance and size since my last visit a week ago, and the owner who is the boss of talk, at least he thinks he is, and little does he realize that, people take the time to drive here to get themselves a decent meal of reasonable quality for the money they are spending, any ways the owner's response was that he changed the recipe of the Tandoori chicken. The owner also carelessly puts the bill together, your numbers and his don't match and the end result is that one leaves with a feeling of being ripped off !! read more
