We learned of this place through Harvest Hosts and while we didn't plan to camp here overnight, we decided to stop by when driving through Lordsburg. Lucky for us, Dave was there and agreed to give us a tour (tours need to be arranged in advance and you are not allowed to wander around the property unsupervised). The history of this place was fascinating, from its beginnings to when Rita lived in the shack for three months to protest the Highway going through to how Dave came to the property. The tour price of $10 per person is more than reasonable and most all of the money goes back into restoration efforts. There is a small museum and gift shop and you can make additional donations toward restoration. Highly recommend for history and photography buffs! read more

Pleasantly surprised! We camped overnight here during an RV road trip to Texas. This place has been in the same family since 1935 and the owners give great, informative tours of this historic ghost town. This is a legit old town, NOT a touristy fluffy roadside stop. Tours are $7.00! We learned so much from Dave on the history of the property (silver mine), old tooling and laborers during the 1800's. Curly Bill, The Clanton brothers and Billy the Kid all passed through this town. Some on their way to Tombstone, AZ! read more

While on a cross country road trip, I stayed in Lordsburg and looked up interesting things to do nearby. Atlas Obscura suggested Shakespeare Ghost Town. I hit the road and pulled up to a gated ghost community about 10 minutes later. Dave, the tour guide, came out, told me the very reasonable tour fee, and offered to do a shortened tour because I had to make it to Los Angeles that night. Dave gives a great tour! Well versed in local knowledge, personable and genuine, he gave a fantastic recreation of life in the Shakespeare Silver Mining town. There are a number of notable buildings still standing, including the stagecoach station house, hotel, and blacksmith shop. As I drove out of town on 10, I put on the oral history of Tombstone. The names that came up at Shakespeare all featured prominently in the Tombstone OK Corral shootout. It was so interesting to hear about history as I was right there! Give yourself at least a two-hour window and expect a tour back in time. We didn't have enough time to visit and it wasn't conducive to self tours. Recommend it if you have a good window of time. Loved our host and they were very accomodating on the tours. read more

My first Harvest Host stay. Arrived on Thanksgiving, but the hosts were still gracious to give us a tour of the ghost town, which is full of rich history. Their enthusiasm for showing the place off was fantastic. I can highly recommend this stop, whether for a night in an RV (make reservations through Harvest Host, no hookups), or for a day tour. The setting in the high desert is beautiful. Don't be intimidated by the short unpaved road. You'll be happy you visited. read more

This was the best ghost town tour I have been on. .. not tourist fake but a real history of the town and family that saved it. Most of the buildings are ghost town perfect in stable but un restored condition that makes you really feel he soul! Highly recommend! read more

Very nice,authentic old ghost town. Really enjoyed visiting with Dave. He gave a neat, private tour. We called him as we were having lunch and agreed that we would meet him in about an hour. We showed up and he met us at the gate. He gave about a two hour tour. Since his family has been here for years, he was very knowledgeable about the history of Shakespeare. Not sure the young kids would enjoy a two hour tour, but the wife and I sure did. read more

This is a hidden gem! My husband and I enjoyed the tour so much. I'm so glad we called. Dave was very accommodating and met with us within 15 min. of calling. I loved the personal stories of things that happened in the town and the buildings make you feel like you step back in time. I defiantly would recommend making the stop and only $7 a person for two hours of hands on history is so worth it! Highly recommended for history buffs, unique-experience travelers and ghost town experts. Others may prefer more "tourist-oriented" towns. State and national historic site where the owner's unique link to Shakespeare provides visitors insight rarely experienced. The tour starts at Janaloo's legacy dance studio followed by a walk down Main Street to the standing Grant Saloon and the once grand Stratford Hotel where some say Billy the Kid once washed dishes as, well, a kid. Across the street walk inside the old mail station - the oldest structure in the town where four families once lived. Skip to the working blacksmith shop where a historical blacksmith skillfully crafts pieces - some can purchased at the gift shop.
