My family and I had the pleasure of watching the "Pericles: Prince of Tyre" play this July and it was a wonderful, family- and budget-friendly experience! Great acting and a beautiful stage. There was a very large crowd by the time the performance of "Measure for Measure" started at 7:15. Luckily the weather was perfect, a slight breeze and a little bit overcast, until intermission! There was a bit of distant thunder so we, and many others packed up their chairs and picnic baskets before the rain. I did not know this play so I read the synopsis ahead of time. There are a lot of characters and in this performance, some actors seemed to be playing more than one part. I think this was helpful to have read the synopsis first. The play is performed with modern touches: a telephone and several rock 'n' roll songs sung. It's a lovely way to spend an evening, even though we left after the first claps of thunder. read more

This year's theatre has returned to normal on Shakespeare Hill and I'm so glad that it is back. Last year's reimagination was wonderful, but I was so ready to get an upscale picnic together and enjoy the production. There are two this season; As You Like It and A Midsummer Night's Dream. We will be returning to view A Midsummer Night's Dream. We enjoyed the presentation of As You Like It, but it was three hours long, according to something on line, so we left during intermission, as we were hungry. This is a great experience though and always a lot of fun. There are port-o-pottys and a sink to wash your hands with soap, which is always a plus when using those toilets. 2022 marks the 47th year of this free event! This has been summer tradition for my friends and I for a decade or more. In response to the pandemic, social distancing, etc the team that produces this event took an awesome move by taking a portion of Shakespeare mobile. You will certainly want to follow their social media and/or regular page to be update to date on what show is being produced, when and where it will be if the traveling show is that day. Be sure to bring your own treats, a bottle of wine and charcuterie are great on the hill. Because it is next to Hoyt Lake I suggest bringing or apply bug spray before taking your seat. Usually, their plays are done very well. However, this 1940's rendition of Measure by Measure was terrible. Shakespeare is already complicated, to add another layer of confusion and complexity made the okay super hard to follow. The Tempest was funny, exciting and a joy to watch. The acting, the set, the costumes....all great, top notch! Kudos to the cast and crew for such a putting on wonderful plays every year. I came to see Much Ado, one of my favorites. I've never seen Shakespeare in the Park before and expected something more stripped down, but the set and costumes were amazing. The set had a great Mediterranean vibe and was used to full effect to enhance the physical comedy. There were songs and a masterfully executed dance sequence at the masquerade party. Even dancing, the actors deftly delivered the Bard's words. The acoustic guitarist was another great addition that set the mood for a few scenes. Great venue and production company. I've been going here to see Shakespeare plays for decades. I started coming when I was a teenager with my dad. Then in my early 20s with my would-be-husband on dates. The last several years it has been with our children. Shakespeare in Delaware Park is a Buffalo staple. Every production is excellent quality. My only complaint, which has nothing to do with the show itself, is the parking. It's all street parking, which is always packed. But sometimes you get lucky. We recently attended "Measure for Measure", and lucked out with a great spot. It did require me to dust off my parallel parking skills, but mission accomplished! And as far as the performance goes, another spectacular show! The venue is all lawn seating, bring your own chair and/or blanket. And bring-your-own-picnics are welcome, too. For "Measure for Measure", we were celebrating our son's 13th birthday. He requested lasagna for dinner. I had no choice but to fulfill the new teen's request, so we lugged a whole lasagna and drinks down to the show. And it's okay! Picnics of all shapes and sizes are welcome. We saw a couple dining complete with flowers, candlesticks, and champagne flutes, so sweet. And you save on both bring-your-own-food, and the ticket prices--the performance is always free! Except for the pass-the-hat, which is optional but highly recommended. If you can, bring whatever amount of cash you can spare to donate; every dollar helps keep this amazing tradition going in Buffalo. I have a spear and I am angry at you. (Shakes Spear). Every city should have this. It's an awesome annual Shakespeare performance for free, for the masses, in a beautiful open air setting which thousands upon thousands of people attend. What's more, I've had the pleasure of going on stage and doing crazy accents in front of the entire 10k people. I think it went down fairly well. Some laughter, plenty of applause. I give it a 4 just because I think the actors should get paid more for what they do, because they're very very good. A lot of energy in these performances and I support it thoroughly. I do, though, think it's funny hearing American accents (or awful British accents) in Shakespeare plays. And if Britney Spears falls asleep in Delaware Park, then you should wake her up. Free! Outdoors! Bring your own booze! This is a fabulous summer event. Great actors and elaborate and high quality sets. They usually at least have a small snack cart to get food if you don't want to put in the effort of bringing your own. The main downside here is having to contend with the weather. It took me two trips to see the entire play due to rain, but it was still fun. I recommend going during the week if you can. Not only is it less crowded, but the actors don't have to compete against live music or DJs nearby. I was really bummed when I came on a Saturday evening and the music coming from the Marcy Casino was super distracting. read more

Shakespeare in Delaware Park has been a grand Buffalo staple for many years! But, I didn't start going until just recently. Which is ridiculous, because Shakespeare is right up my alley. It's something like the second longest running Shakespeare in the Park event in the country, which only further attests to how awesome an event this is. Probably the best part of it is, it's a free event! It's a non-profit production. Though, they typically ask for donations during the intermission - "No donation is too small." Plus, they have a super cool merch booth, with posters and t-shirts and all sorts of commemorative trinkets. I could talk all day about how great the productions are each and every year. They always pick two plays, a comedy and a tragedy, and the shows rotate each season so you can expect something different each year. They'll take a Shakespeare play and put their own little twist/unique take on it - for example, The Merry Wives of Windsor had an all-female cast (an awesome opposition to Shakespeare's time, when the cast was all-male). A few key things to bring: snacks and drinks (definitely do some wine!), blankets and/or lawn chairs, bug spray, warm clothes (sometimes you get those chilly summer nights!), pillows for comfort. They don't allow you to sit close to the front if you bring lawn chairs, so keep that in mind! Get there early if you want a front row blanket spot. I'll go to this three or four times a year - I'd watch the shows over and over again if I could. Genuinely one of the best ongoing summer events in Buffalo. read more

One of Buffalo's greatest community traditions, Shakespeare in the Park has been running for over 30 years. They perform two plays every summer, this summer the lineup being "Richard III" and "Midsummer Night's Dream." It's free to attend; I recommend getting here at least an hour prior to the start of the show with your blanket/air mattress / lawn chairs / wine and food. Although you can purchase polish sausages, hot dogs and other grilled food during intermission, bringing your own food is encouraged. Shakespeare in the Park is comprised of mostly local actors who audition before the season starts. It's an integral part of Buffalo's local Theater community, giving local actors a chance to express their craft for an audience of over 50,000 every season (giving it the distinction of being the largest Shakespeare festival in the country after NYC). The performances have always been professional, with the acting, costume design and lighting being top-notch. You can tell a lot of care and creativity was put into the different elements in the performances. Although Shakespeare in the Park was originally a sister-project of UB's Theatre Department, it has evolved to its own professional status among the Buffalo arts. While young actors still get smaller roles and as an audience member, you may notice some nervousness from these actors, the major roles are carefully cast and you get to appreciate that young actors have a local place where they can get the experience they need in Shakespeare. This is a great place to bring a date, enjoy some cuddling time on the blanket (although the hill and mosquito's may make that somewhat uncomfortable), while you kick back and relax under the outside air. The plays generally start around 7/7:30 and go until 10p (or later), so you'll get to see a nice sunset while you attend. I love that this exists with such flair here in Buffalo and I hope to enjoy it for decades to come. read more

Shakespeare in Delaware Park is back! For 36 years, volunteers from the community having been bringing Shakespeare to the stage --- for free! Hidden alongside the picturesque Hoyt lakefront, the 2013 Season kicks off with Hamlet. And wow, what a show! We got there a little early (about 30 min) to get a nice seat at center stage, and brought our own chairs and a picnic foods. Just pizza does have a flier in the program saying that they'll deliver pizza right to the field! Many people brought their own wine and refreshments. It was a great crowd. Lots of people, but not cramped. Kids laying on blankets, dogs hanging with their owners in the fields... but everyone behaving. Just a great night. They had food vendors at the top of the hill, and a souvenir stand selling everything from clothing, wine glasses, pens, umbrellas... all to help defray the costs of the show. The acting was very high quality. I was impressed. They even took on high school interns and gave them small parts and the ability to be on stage in the background or moving furniture, which is very sweet. We had a great time, and this is a perfect cheap date idea! Bring a bottle of wine and discuss the similarities between Hamlet and The Lion King under the stars. Plus, the show runs from 7:30-11pm, so you still have time to get a drink afterwards. If you have kids, bring pillows and let them fall asleep while the grown-ups watch the show! Intermission is around 9, so you can also sneak out or come late. Go see this. You won't be disappointed. read more

Shakespeare in Delaware Park is an event almost everyone will enjoy... whether it's a date night, get together with friends, or even by yourself it's a great destination! Earlier this summer, Henry V was performed and The Comedy of Errors is the current performance which goes until August, 17th, 2014. Next summer Twelfth Night and Romeo and Juliet are in the works for a big anniversary year! Also at Delaware Park during Shakespeare is a small concession stand - I believe for hot dogs or popcorn - as well as a gift shop of sorts, selling tumblers, totes, etc. The coffee truck was also spotted both times I went to Shakespeare if you need a little pick me up/caffeine burst. How can you not give this place a 5 star review?! I have attend maybe 5 different productions at Shakespeare in Delaware Park and it is always a great time. I would recommend finding out what 2 plays will be featured and doing your research on them, his will aid the confusion that exists when watching a Shakespeare play. The actors are always on point. Same with the costumes and lighting. The new stage is great, it really opens up the seating area. If you want to be front and center to see one of these shows, you have to get to the park early! I just saw The Winter's Tale on Saturday and arrived an hour early and did not get to sit in the center, so I'm talking real early! If you are looking for an inexpensive way to get out and do something different, this is the way to do it. The trick is to know to go early enough to get a good parking spot and seat on the hill. I was lucky enough to get access to the Yelp Event this past Saturday the 6th. I always figured that the patio seats would suck but it wasn't that bad (but the chairs still hurt my back a little - thankfully the tempest is a relatively short play). I like that recently they've been incorporating more technology into the shows - this time they used voice modulation for one of the soliloquies and LEDs to represent some magics happening it was pretty cool. 10/10 would absolutely recommend you go to Shakespeare in the park if you haven't yet. Us yelp elites enjoyed Celine's leadership and hospitality this perfect Sunday July eve in our own special section of seating high on the hill for this 39th season of Shakespeare In Delaware Park. We even got a shout-out at intermission and our little troupe of ten sounded like fifty! Our hats off to Founder/Artistic Director, Saul Elkin. ((applause)) It's a bring whatever you like event. Families and couples hauled in portable chairs, found a spot and unpacked lovely spreads of food and drink to enjoy. In spite of some libations, there wasn't an obnoxious peep to be heard. There were a few notable professional actors in the Comedy of Errors cast appearing under special agreement with Actors' Equity Association, how grand is that? Do plan to arrive early to score decent seating. Wear comfy walking shoes, you'll be schlepping the chair and grub a ways. Bring cash, you'll want to contribute (they dream of $20/person but whatever you can scrape up will do) at pass-the-hat time and patronize the gift hut (they accept credit cards) where there are some nice items, like unique plastic wine sippy cups, perfect for the lawn, sweat shirts, memberships, this-and-that. They need continuous community support to keep this tradition FREE. Super glad I packed bug repellent, it is a dewy lawn at dusk after all. It was a beautiful summer sight to see Hoyt Lake in the background, to see the luxuriously mature trees all around, the stage at the foot of Shakespeare Hill behind the Rose Garden looking creatively maintained. Surely we'll await big plans for 2015 and Shakespeare In Delaware Park's 40th anniversary. read more

There are two types of people who go to Shakespeare in Delaware Park: 1. People who love Shakespeare, wine, and culture and 2. People who like tailgating. I happen to be categorized into the second category (and openly admit it). Let's get real. How many of the people who attend really understand the plays? I studied three Shakespeare plays in high school (which have been performed at SDP) and still don't understand them! Last night, I was impressed that I actually understood about 15% of The Winter's Tale. Usually I'd say that I understand about 3% of the plays. Now I bet you're wondering, why would you give five stars to something you don't understand? Let's go back to the second reason why somebody would go...to tailgate. Oh the tailgating. The glorious tailgating. This is where it gets fun. It starts with prepping for tailgating. This is the classiest tailgating you will do. Wine, cheese, crackers, fruits, sandwiches...the list goes on and on. Be prepared before you go. You'll see many of the SDP fans with their Wegmans bags. Quite often, they'll pull out a Wegmans Sub Shop sandwich. Come with food otherwise you'll be drooling over your neighbors cheese plate. You also obviously need chairs. Think about the type of chair you want to bring. You will likely need to carry it for a few blocks so a chair with a strap is recommended. Additionally, be prepared for the tilt forward on the chair since you're sitting on a hill. Make sure you have a chair you can sink into or a chair with a footrest to help work against gravity. Also, it's cold when the sun goes down. Bring a sweatshirt for when the sun starts to set and then a blanket for when it gets dark. This blanket can also serve as a duel purpose blanket. You can spread your food out on it before the show and then cover yourself up after. If you're not into eating off of a blanket, I would suggest a portable table. Get there early, dress warm, bring food and a chair, and have fun! read more

I thought I did this review the day after seeing the play. It was a good play. I missed the begining and the end because I had to leave for work. What I did see was entertaining. I laughed and chuckled throughout the event. I actually met two other yelpers there in our private balcony and struck up conversations with them. I'm now Yelp friends with one of them. The weather was weird that day. Raining periodically throughout the early portion of the day. It actually rained about an hour before the play started. I thought it was cancelled. I drove down to the park just see if it was or not and to my delight it was in full production as I arrived. I had to park two blocks down because the Delaware park casino had an event as well as Shakespeare in the park event. I don't remember any of the names from the play. I'll have to look them up and add to this review later. I certainly, definitely would suggest to others to see plays that premier at Shakespeare in the park. The actors were into their roles. Who doesn't like live entertainment for only the cost of a donation in a beautiful park atmosphere? It's obvious we have a lot of talent here in Buffalo. Get there early to snag a good spot on the hill and bring plenty of wine and cheese with you read more
