Very slow service. It takes a long time for someone to come out and acknowledge us, and once seated, expect a long time for someone to come out again and take our order. Food also comes out verrry slow. The food is just so-and-so... typical Ethiopian & Eritrean selection and platters. Some of the vegetarian items in the Vegetarian Platter are spicy (the red-coloured peas or lentils), but it's good that they give a big jug of water on each table (you'll need it if you're not very good with spicy food). The yellow lentils and cabbage are pretty good and mild. Portion size is just about right. Each platter (whether it be Vegetarian Platter, or the mixed vegetarian and meat platter) is good for 1 person. read more

However, we ordered the Taste of Shalom as well as the Meat Platter For Two (we were a group of five), which gave us something like 9 or 10 dishes to sample, all with the iron-rich flatbread. These were a wonderful array of flavours - the chicken leg and lamb were great. And it was ridiculously inexpensive - something like $13-15 per person, for an amount of food that kept me full for the rest of the day. I had not idea what to expect for food from Shalom, but took a chance and ordered ahead asking what I should get for my Friday lunch. She said the curry chicken is popular so I opted for that, which came with some side bread for dipping and a salad. That sounded perfect for me, the the price was not bad either. But when I got home, and started eating the curry, which comes with a couple drumsticks of chicken in a rich African curry sauce, I realized there was no salad. I didn't both calling back, but was disappointed because I love salad and was looking forward to their take on the ubiquitous side dish. The chicken curry was delicious! To go along with the curry, there was an Ethiopian flatbread to use as a dip, similar to the middle eastern bread to dip into your hummus. But instead of a white bread, it was a deep purple colour, and instead of being crispy, it was soft and pliable, similar to a pancake in texture. I found the taste of it not to my liking, as I was expecting something more neutral to carry the taste of the curry. Instead it has quite a strong flavour, which was kind of a sour taste, similar to a vinegar. Not what I was expecting, from other cuisines like using naan with Indian food. This is the kind of restaurant that would be better dining in with a group where you could order the large platter and have more of a well-rounded flavour profile, rather than a single dish. I would like to do that when we can go in again. In the window they are pushing their coffees, now that is something I would like to try sooner than later! I'll update when I do. read more

I've been here twice now. First time I got the Shalom combo platter with meat and the second time I did the vegetarian one. Both times the food was delicious! I find the flavours for each item very distinct but all very flavourful and interesting. I think this is some of the best Ethiopian food I've had in the city. Once my friend also got this vegetarian dish of a stew-like consistency of cooked chickpea flour and it came in a cute little clay pot with injera on the side. It was packed full of flavour and tasted amazing absorbed in the bread. So aside from the platters, their individual dishes are definitely worth exploring too. The prices are quite low and affordable and you are definitely getting more than your money's worth for the quality and quantity. The place itself is a bit dated in terms of decor/atmosphere, but the food is great so I don't care. Service is a bit slow at times but friendly. This is totally a hidden gem in Cabbagetown. This place is a treasure. I've only ever had the platters (the meat one and the veggie- I actually prefer the veggie) and have never been disappointed. The lady who works here is so sweet and will bring you lots of injera. I will say... this is not a quick meal place. Service is super slow. Sometimes there seems to be only one person working the whole restaurant (the lady I mentioned) and she will just disappear into the kitchen to cook and leave the front end without service. So you will do some waiting. And the platters take some time to prepare. But if you're not in a hurry and want to have nice sit down experience with good food, you will enjoy yourself. read more

I wish I could give this place a thousand stars. What an incredible experience. The food is so authentic, so full of flavor. We had the shalom platter and added the kitfo (a rare meat delicacy only available at special butcher shops - only the highest grade meat). The food was so delicious. The meal is served with injera bread that tastes delicious and is made from a teff wheat base. The service is incredible and they treated us like family. They served us fresh Ethiopian coffee on the house - the coffee they served is known to facilitate discussion unknowingly that leads to the resolution of your problems. So this was my first time Trying Ethiopian food with my boyfriend. We shared a platter and I was surprised by how good the curries were. The injera is not for everyone. After we were done with the platter we still felt a bit hungry so we ordered another one of the dishes from the platter individually, not sure what is was called but it was meat with jalapeños. First time at Shalom and the service was great, and food was very enjoyable! We ordered the Shalom combo platter (meat base), and it came with minced beef, tomato base "beef stew", braised chicken drumstick, and braised goat or lamb. The braised meats were my favorite for its depth of flavor and heat. The braised sauces reminded me of Mexican moles, but with Ethiopian spice. My husband really liked the tomato base "beef stew." What a great experience! We ordered a shalom platter with beef - this platter had both meat and veggies. The platter itself is $20, but if you add another serving so it serves two people, it's only $5, which is incredibly cheap! The platter itself comes with four other pieces of Ethiopian flatbread, in addition to the flatbread that is also used as a plate (best part of the dish since it has the most flavour from the toppings), so there is quite a bit of food! The meat was seasoned really well and the veggies were to die for! Definitely a great balance of bread, meat, and veggies. Also, you should definitely eat with your hands to get the full experience! The waitress there was really nice- she regularly checked up on us and gave us great recommendations on how to eat it. Ignore the down at the heels exterior and slightly outre interior furniture. This place has very friendly service and great Ethiopian food. Order family style and they'll bring a nice platter with salad in the middle and extra injera on the side. (The injera, btw, is especially delicious here.) Family run restaurant with delicious Ethiopian food. All-teff (no-wheat) injera (flat pancake that doubles as plate and utensils) that is flown in from Ethiopia twice a week! Great service, very accommodating of requests. Inexpensive considering the quality of the food, and the uniquely robust delicacy with which it is prepared. Terribly romantic - it is often empty, and feels like our own hideaway! We go there 2x a week, sometimes. I almost hate to publicize it, but they are more than worthy of your business. Went to Shalom yesterday and ordered the taste of Shalom platter which is supposed to be Key Wot (beef) or Doro Wot (chicken) with veggie sides. I asked the server if it was large enough for two people and she said that it should be and that she would check. It took a while for the platter to arrive and when it did it was a platter of only veggie sides. Moreover when the bill came I was charged an extra $5 for the platter. read more

This is my new go-to Ethiopian restaurant. There's street parking outside and they take credit and debit cards. The outside of the restaurant made it look more like a bar or convenience store so I'm glad a fellow yelper put the picture up so I knew what I was looking for. The inside isn't anything to write home about but that's ok because I'm here for the food. Which was DELICIOUS! Get the Shalom special combo and add in the veggies and for $30, the two of you will be in Ethiopian heaven. The curried lentils were delicious and not mushy. The doro wat was saucy and not too spicy. The salad in the middle was fresh and zingy and made the injera extra tasty. This place is slamming and hit the spot. The staff were very pleasant and made you feel welcome. I have been disappointed with how Ethiopiques on church was getting stingy with their portions and now this is my replacement spot. A+ food! I've just been here once, and only for takeout, but the Veggie Taste of Shalom combo is crazy delicious, comes with lots of injera, and is a really large meal - big enough for me to have leftovers, even though I was ravenous. The woman who took my order was lovely & warm & offered me complimentary spice tea while I waited, which was really welcome on a cold, wet day. Went here instead of Under the Table since it was too busy. The place didn't look like much from the inside but was impressive inside. The host was friendly and suggested two combos for our group of four. Trying Ethiopian for the first time, it tasted fantastic and was very flavorful. We were not saying "Shalom!" by the time we left. My boyfriend and I decided to go here for the first time, he had not tried Ethiopian food. When we wen't in no one else was there and the server seemed friendly at first, however things went completely south after that. She took our orders and clearly didn't understand what we had asked. As when she came back out of the kitchen and we asked for clarification she said we had asked for something else and that it will cost more than we had anticipated. We were upset but my boyfriend said it was fine and said he would pay. When the server came back out she brought our samosas with a little extra protein on it... there was a nice curly hair sitting on top. My boyfriend and I looked at one another as the server walked away... he chivalrously offered to eat the one that had the hair on it. Looking back we were too nice and should have said something immediately. "Oh well" we said and continued on. Next she brought out the platters, the food was tasting pretty good but I felt an itch in my throat and to my surprise it was another hair... this time triple the size....as i pulled it out of my esophagus i almost gagged. (Yuckkkk!) Enough was enough my boyfriend and i decided we didnt want to take our chances and encounter any more foreign dna in our food. We politely waited for the server to come out of the back kitchen. When she did, my boyfriend kindly explained to her that we had found the items in our food... Instantly she said "What can I do?" and "It's not fair" and when we said we were done eating (after a few bites) and not paying she accused us of planting the hair in the food... directly after that she told us she was calling the police and scurried to the back. As she did this my boyfriend and I left feeling stunned and threatened. Absolute lack of customer service and general courtesy. If you dont mind hair in your meal then bon appetit but if you have any common sense NEVER go here. p.s. we also feel like she would keep the leftover food and serve to the next.... read more

I will definitely be returning to Shalom. My partner and I went last night. The winning feature of our experience at this new Ethiopian restaurant in Cabbagetown was the delicious food. We ordered the Taste of Shalom sampler ($19.99) and our server informed us that for a few dollars' up charge we could have some veggie dishes on the plate as well, which we went for. The menu doesn't list what's on the 'taster' plate, but I believe it included doro wat (on-the-bone chicken stew which sometimes comes with an egg, but not this time), beef tibs, and kitfo leb leb (lightly-cooked minced beef [or lamb?] in a chili-based spice blend). Veggie wise, there was misir wat (an oh-so-delish red lentil stew), gomen (collard greens), kik alicha (split-pea stew w/ tumeric). Each offering was cooked to be tender and moist with its own unique and notable flavouring, contrasting and complementing the next. The salad in the center of the plate had a delicious, light, savoury dressing, and the injera was just right. Some of the veggie dishes were served room temperature/cold. I wouldn't recommend going here if you're looking for a quick eat (it was ~20 minutes from our order to food on the table, with a couple on a date the only other table at the restaurant). The ambiance could also be greatly improved by turning off the TV no one was watching, lowering the lights and replacing the one very blue-tinted fluorescent light in a corner of the restaurant. No drink list was offered, so I think the restaurant isn't licensed. A group of more than 4 people would be pretty squeezed for space. None of these aspects were deal breakers. We were very satisfied with the delicious food, the service was friendly, and it was very reasonably priced (our bill came to just over $30, and it was the perfect amount of food for two people). Very happy to have found delicious Ethiopian food so close by - we are looking forward to our next meal there and hope they do well. read more
