This was my first time trying Ethiopian food. I enjoyed my experience overall, but I think it probably isn't to my personal taste. I shared the Vegetarian Bayaaynatu with a friend. It came with small servings of all the vegetarian dishes - I won't name them all since there were a lot! Of course, the dish was served with their injera (bread). I liked that the dish was made to be shared and I enjoyed the process of eating and breaking off the spongy injera to use it to scoop my food. Eating with my hands was a bit messy but fun! And the bread was fluffy and soft. Unfortunately, I wasn't very fond of the actual dishes. The texture was too mushy for my taste. Perhaps it was my palette that day but I also found it difficult to differentiate between the dishes because they seemed very similar in taste and texture. Maybe Ethiopian food is for you but I think for me it might be a pass!
First time trying Ethiopian food and it did not disappoint! Went on a weekday for lunch and it was easy to get a table, the only person working which I'm assuming is the owner, is such a friendly guy with a sense of humor! Perfect ambiance for catching up with friends or even for date night!
On a whim, partner and I came to Ethiopian House around noon and we were the first customers of the day. I got the veg+beef combo which consisted of: - Tibs (fried beef) - Tikil Gomon (Cabbage & Carrot) - Atakelt wot (String Beans & Potatoes) - cottage cheese which was all served with one injera. This plate is meant to be eaten with your hands so we did just that (they also have wet cloths to wash your hands at the table that I appreciated). We used injera which is this soft, spongy bread to pick up the sides into one delish bite. I enjoyed all the sides because they were all flavourful but my favourites were the tibs and atakelt wot. I felt the portion was actually perfect for me. More and warm injera would be the cherry on top! I did not see an option to order more injera on the menu. I also loved the ambience of the restaurant - the vibes, colours, smells, and beautiful artwork that adorned the walls.
I love Ethiopian food but since covid I haven't made it to my favorite spots and it's not many of my friends first choice in cuisine but I finally found a friend to come with me here! The service here is great. The gentleman was a gentleman and was very polite and explained recommended dishes patiently. Don't be intimidated by weird food lol. The injera bread is pretty weird but you'll grow to enjoy it. I'm not seasoned in Ethiopian cuisine enough to be able to compare good and bad Ethiopian food but it's all good! If you want to try their coffee, order right when you sit down. It takes 20 mins to prepare. I didn't have it this time but saw many tables have presented to them a hot smoking kettle of coffee. It's strong coffee and deep flavored from what I remember. It'll make your clothes smell so be wary of that.
The Ethiopian house is a great place to scratch the itch for decent Ethiopian food. We opted for the lunch special, one veggie and one meat. The veggie special was amazing, featuring 8 different distinct aspects of their main dishes, while the meat special had two beef dishes and some cottage cheese and collard greens, both were fantastic in flavour. The injera was served cool / room temperature though and would have been a bit better if it was warmed up. The restaurant has a family run feel to it, outdated decor but delicious nonetheless. The service is simple and ran by one person for the whole restaurant during lunch time, but we did not experience any delay.
Back when life was normal, Ethiopian House had a small outdoor patio, on a side street just off the busyness of Yonge. I wanted to try something new. It's very different, eaten with your hands and served on an injera (thin, spongy bread/crepe). Indoors felt dirtier, think carpet everywhere retaining odours. I tried the Vegetarian Bayaaynatu which includes small servings of 8 different vegetarian dishes (Yekik Alicha, Kik Wot, Misir Alicha, Atakelt Wot ... basically mushed peas, lentils, mixed vegetables). Good choice if you want to try a variety of vegetables and spice levels. I also had a beef and vegetable Bayaaynatu. Same concept with ground beef. Overall I wasn't impressed with the quantity, not super filling, more like vegetable mush. If you want to try something different, this is very different, but that's it.
My friends and I definitely enjoyed the experience Group of 4 or more? Call ahead so that they can make space for you. We were lucky enough to have gotten sittings upstairs which was very sweet of the owner. Btw, he's super wonderful. Anyways, we ordered a main dish including tibs and their coffee. Everything tasted great and something about fall of the bone chicken always makes peoples hearts smile. The coffee was great also. Definitely on the stronger side so don't get it if you're planing on sleeping an hour later.
Very tasty, except I believe overpriced for two. Normal dish on the menu is around 15 and this portion takes 45.. not that much more vege not meat. Yet, love the vide and the taste. First time trying Ethiopian food and the special injera, stewed side dishes are all amazing.
People are friendly and have been there for years. Wonderfully cooked food, good tasting, good variety. Love this place for the last 15 years. Would recommend. Cozy and small, if you are coming on a busy night you might see if they can reserve you a table!
Having tried numerous Ethiopian restaurants, I'd say that this is one of my favourites. The place is a converted townhouse on a quiet street, and the interior decoration gave a really nice ambience. Food selection was typical of any other Ethiopian restaurant, but more tasty, not as spicy, and just the right portion. The Vegetarian Platter was the higlight - Lentils, Chickpeas, Split Peas, Collard Greens, Vegetables Stews. For coffee drinkers, you can also order a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony experience.
We wanted to try Ethiopian food for awhile and this place popped up in the searches so we decided to try it out. On the day we went, there was only one employee in the front working and he was very busy. We were seated and waited a bit to order and it took some more time to get our food. They gave us huge amounts of injera, which had a very interesting taste to it. It tasted a bit acidic which I did look up and it said that a small percentage of people could taste it whereas others couldn't (my company didn't taste it). We ordered a combination of meat and veggies on the same plate but I found that the portions weren't that great. I enjoyed the vegetarian portion better than the meat. It was neat to eat with just my hands as I am not accustomed to this style of cuisine. Overall, I found it ok.
Wow! I'm definitely coming back here. I love Ethiopian food so once I saw an Ethiopian restaurant near me I knew I had to try it. The Vegetarian Bayaaynatu is a must get! I like lentils as much as the average person but oh god I didn't know it was possible to put this much flavor in lentils! It tastes so good especially with the injera bread. I just know that I'll be ordering the vegetarian bayaaynatu every single time I come here. This dish cemented this place as a staple for me! As for the meat Bayaaynatu, it comes with a serving of the Goreng Goreng and the Tibs. It says the Goreng Goreng is best served rare but I know myself and wouldn't be able to eat rare meat and ordered it medium and I really liked it! I'd definitely get it again, it tasted so flavorful and the meat was tender and cooked just right. As for the Tibs, it came out pinker than I'd like. It tasted ok, but it was definitely overshadowed by everything else on the plate and we didn't end up finishing it. I tried it out and it tasted fine but the pink color just freaked me out to be honest! All the table have no cutlery so you have to eat everything with your hands, which I personally love! I love the place's decorations and aesthetic, but it can get a bit stuffy. We came on a hot summer day and they have no AC so it was pretty stuff and sweaty in there, but any complaint was gone once the food came out :p The server is just one guy, but food still came out quickly. I'm very satisfied with my whole experience here and I'm definitely coming again and will have to try every dish on the menu! read more

It's always nice to try a different cultural food, and the Ethiopian house is a good entryway to this cuisine. We ordered the combo platter of vegetables and meat choices, so we can really try all the different varieties available. I liked that their wraps were not as sour as the ones I've had in the past. Great service and unique atmosphere. read more

Toronto.... Had to wait a bit in line as the place was busy. Good sign. The guy behind us in line had returned for the second night in a row. Excellent sign! Wife's first time at Ethiopian. Excited! We ordered the Vegetarian mix and the Meat mix. Not a tremendous amount of food but certainly filling. The chunky meat dish was excellent and the rest of the dishes were just ok. The injera (bread) was nice. It was good. It was average. Nice service. Cute place. I would go back but I'm not going to. read more

Finally got to try Ethiopian House in February. It was an experience right as you walk in with the strong fragrance of incense and Ethiopian artwork all over the walls of this house converted into a restaurant. Our server, who might be the owner based on the business card I saw, was helpful and calming when he advised the coffee and popcorn was something that required time to enjoy after a meal. My Ethiopian coworker has frequented this spot over the years and my visit confirmed it's authenticity. I definitely recommend it! read more

I liked this place! it was my first time trying Ethiopian food and I was impressed. it's a cosy little place that's got seating up top and down on the main level. the staff are very friendly and explain whatever it is you don't know. as an Indo-Canadian, the food here reminded me of traditional Indian dishes - which is probably what made me enjoy the place more. We ordered a very platter with various types of "curried" veggies - we didn't like the kale but the rest was delicious. definitely will try Ethiopian cuisine again. read more

Being that it was my first Ethiopian experience, I had no idea what to expect. After a pleasant dining experience I had at Ethiopian House Restaurant, I can gladly say I will be returning in the near future. My friends and I weren't sure what to get, so the waitress recommended a platter for us to share, which includes veggie, meat, and chicken options. Along with a big platter of assorted colors and favours, we each also got two rolls of injera; which served as the perfect utensil to absorb and grab just the right amount of each dish in our platter. The portion was huge for three people, and it came out to ~$17 per person. If you're sitting on the fence about trying something new, you should definitely step out of your comfort zone and give this place a try. I guarantee you'll be pleasantly surprised about how flavourful and delicious everything is! read more

Huge disappointment! Saw the great reviews and wanted to try something new so came by for a dinner on a weekday night. It was very empty, my dining companion and I were the only two in the restaurant. I was pretty surprised since it was around dinner time. That was probably the first sign that I should've have turned around and go somewhere else. We ordered the veggie and meat platter for two people. The dishes were very much average, nothing stellar. There were a variety of meat, veggie and bean based dips. The injera (what you use to scoop the meat/veggie/beans what have you) tasted very sour. Not sure if that's the way it is or if it's gone bad. Regardless, it wasn't for me. The service was horrid. I had to get out of my seat and find the waitress in their little nooks to get any type of service. I'm sorry but I when I go to a sit down restaurant I don't expect to have to get out of my seat to be served. Is that too much to ask? When I wanted to pay, the waitress punched in some numbers on the register and told me how much I owed without even presenting a bill (also had to walk up to the register to pay btw). Yep. Definitely won't be coming back. read more
I love eating with my hands. It is such a sensual way to enjoy an exotic meal. I appreciate that the Ethiopian House restaurant encourages customers to use their hands for the full experience. The menu was extensive with a great selection for vegetarians. I went with my gut and ordered Tibs. The pan fried beef sauteed with onions, garlic and awaze. It was finger-licking good. Normally, I don't like injera, but it was the perfect compliment to Tibs. Especially the part that was completely soaked with all the spicy juices. Not familiar with words like awaze or berbere? No sweat. Look for "Do you know what it means?" on the menu. I found the information very useful. The cultural ambiance, the attentive service and the food -- everything was fantastic! read more

Ethiopian House serves authentic Ethiopian cuisine. The service is very friendly. The atmosphere of the restaurant is reflective of the Ethiopian culture. The food is quite flavourful and reasonably priced. We got a platter of veggies, lentils and beef. Each item on the platter has its own unique flavour. The platter is accompany with injera (Ethiopian spongy bread). You use the injera to pick up the food. You eat with your hands as cutlery is not available (make sure you wash your hands). I would recommend this place if you are craving Ethiopian food. It's definitely worth a try. It's not my favourite cuisine, but there are some interesting flavours and textures. read more

Decided to come here with some co-workers for lunch. I've passed by this place numerous of times since my university days. Finally upon arrival the ambiance is beautifully decorated with Ethiopian influence. Their menu features a lot of choices along with daily lunch specials that provide you plenty of selections. For starters our entourage of 3 decided to try their stuffed veggie spicy green peppers. Nothing over the top but nonetheless it was flavorful and spicy. For main entree I opted to try their daily lunch special- meat platter dish which featured a colorful melody/sample of meats prepared. Each sample was specially prepared with its own distinctive spice exhibiting the flavors of Ethiopia. Each portion had its own distinctive taste but overall average in my books. Overall the place is great, the service was a bit slow. read more

Yelp continues to both challenge and tantalize my taste buds. Ethiopian cuisine was uncharted territory for me, but I am always up for an adventure! Even though some firsts are forgettable, it never stops me... You gotta try everything once right? Okay, maybe not everything. My only preconception of Ethiopian food is that it is random piles of "mush," you eat with your hands and you must try Ethiopian coffee. Nothing exciting like "its pan-seared and then served with a balsamic jus" lol. So I was going in totally blind and relying on pure fate. That and I was pretty hungry, so anything would've been satisfying. Whenever I dine out, I usually take it upon myself to take responsibility in ordering. But tonight, my fate would rest in someone else's trusty hands of fellow Elite Karl R. And I am happy to say that I was NOT disappointed. We ordered the Vegetarian Bayaaynatu which came with 8 different veggie components and is served with Injera. Injera has a crêpe-like consistency, but tastes like sourdough bread. Due to its flimsy texture, it makes scooping up the various sauces/stews difficult. And for a klutz like me, I'm sure it made for a very entertaining show. Misir Wot (Lentil Stew in berbere sauce) Sherro Wot (Highly-seasoned chick peas (powder) in berbere sauce) Tikil Goman (Cabbage, carrots, potatoes, cooked in turmeric sauce) Goman Wot (Kale or collard greens in mild sauce) Yekik Alicha (Yellow split peas in mild turmeric sauce) Kik Wot (Split peas stew in berbere sauce) Misir Alicha (Split lentil stew in thick mild sauce with seasoning) Atakelt Wot (Mixed vegetables - string beans, carrots, potatoes - cooked in tomato sauce) Every component of the platter was well-seasoned, rich in flavour, and fragrant in spices. I do not mean that it was spicy, because I did not find any of it to be spicy (e.g. hot). It was surprisingly filling. I would probably not recommend coming here on a date (at least not a first date if you're still trying to convince or in my case, fool the other party into thinking you are a classy lady, lol). This is a "get down and dirty" dining experience as you will get food all over your hands. But luckily there are wet naps at your disposal. I did not like our server as when we had reminded her we asked for a second helping of Injera she gave us a dirty look, and that was just not cool. I should be shooting HER the dirty look... she made us ask twice for something. If I were footing the bill I definitely would not have given her a generous tip. Unfortunately, because we had had coffee at a nearby Starbucks prior to, I had to pass on ordering coffee. After all, it was a work night, and already closing in on 9PM, and I do need my rest! read more

This has really become my go-to place for the occasional Ethiopian craving! I usually come for the lunch specials but after convincing another couple to give Ethiopian a try, we came in on a Saturday evening. Mohammed is so welcoming and even though the restaurant is quite understaffed, he has away of making you welcome. He even stopped us from ordering to much. We got a large platter with all the veggies and lentils, kitfo, tibs and the weekend only doro wat (or chicken stew). All the food couples with the injera was absolutely delicious and each type had its own unique flavor. If you haven't had Ethiopian before, think of it like - the flavours of Indian cuisine without the spicy heat and the overbearing abundance of spices. This is not to say anything bad about Indian food because I love it but it's just to highlight what you may expect. Most importantly - there isn't any cutlery here so get over having to eat with your hands. Great for: first dates, dinner with friends, lunch alone, an interesting meal.... the list goes on. read more
