I wish I had a better experience here. I was hopeful. I drove my father here with false hope that this facility cares. They denied us for transplant but assured us they had a back up plan and that they would be there to support us throughout his journey. They did a procedure and sent us on our way back to our home town. Wouldn't answer calls and refused any sort of follow up from the procedure. I called over 15 times. Sent a dozen messages on the portion with NO RESPONSE! What kind of medical professionals won't answer a family after they complete a surgery?! I lost my dad less than a month after the botched procedure here. I still have yet to get ahold of this joke of a facility. What kind of patient care is that. They were quick to send bills. Buy your loved ones more time. Go to Mayo. Anywhere else. read more

I was unable to get an appointment with a local urologist, since I had an upcoming cruise in 3 days, I decided to go to Shands ER. I spent 1 night in Shands ER hallway attached to a device that relieved my symptoms (Not cure them) and then 5 days admitted to Shands hospital for the urinary issue at night. The first 2 days in the hospital, nothing happened. Finally, on the 3rd, 4th days, Multiple Doctors in groups reviewed my issue with no real recommendations. A urologist finally reviewed my issue and provided 2 recommendations, which were not recommended by the chief urology doctor the following day. I was discharged on day 5 with the discharge instructions that included the 2 recommendations not recommended by the head urologist. I found out after discharge that I still had the issue I went into the ER for, since it was masked by the device they had me on 24/7 in the hospital. I finally was able to get an appointment with my local Dr, NP. She diagnosed me as dehydrated and told me to drink lots of water. Unbelievable, but that immediately resolved my night issue. My daughter was a student at UF and was suffering from severe headaches. She went to Shands ER where she was medicated with Prednisone 5 mg (not an adult appropriate dose) and zofran and benadryl and placed in a chair in the waiting room. No one checked on her and she was falling out of the chair from falling asleep from the meds. Ultimately, we flew her home to CT to get appropriate medical care. In CT she was diagnosed with a TBI following a head injury from a couple of weeks earlier and that was the cause of the headaches, not a simple migraine. Shands ER was not interested in taking a full history or complete an appropriate neurological assessment to treat my daughter. It is July now and the delay in treatment caused by Shands has resulted in her still having neurologic symptoms. If Shands had assessed and provided appropriate treatment my daughter would not be neurologically impacted by this time. Any parent of UF students, if you send your child to Shands make sure you are aware of everything that is happening because the medical care is substandard to say the least. read more

I am absolutely horrified at the service of this hospital. My friend was in critical pain and was waiting from 1 PM to 2 AM for treatment. They treated everyone in such an inhumane manner, and they would not tell us anything. After waiting for 8 hours, we finally decided to ask if there was any indication of when they could see a doctor. All they said was no. Not only did her medical problems result to something serious and urgent, but other people in the waiting room told me many horror stories about this hospital. If you are ever in need of urgent medical help, do NOT go to this hospital. read more

Filthiest hospital I have ever been to ! We don't live in Florida but got called that our daughter was there so we flew down to Florida. We both were so shocked at how dirty this hospital is. Especially during this pandemic ! We were there for 10 days and I watched this certain table that had coffee split and dried food on it and took a pic everyday to show the date. Guess what ?? It's still there ! If you go to Shands Hospital look in the lobby at the Children's hospital at the big round wooden table in the lobby or go look at the cafeteria ! Absolute filth. Excellent in all respects. I fell and broke every bone in my right ankle. In the same fall I also hit my head on my travertine floor of my Gainesville FL home. 11 staples in my scalp, three MRI to confirm neither concussion injury nor blood on the brain injury. After two ankle operations by an expert team, I was released and transported to Shands Rehab. Rehab insured I got my strength back; upper body strength is particularly important for using a walker. Rehab taught me how to use the walker and the wheel chair, together. Rehab had me engaged in activities most every hour of the day. So, after 7 days, I was out. Without Shands Rehab guidance and supervision, I would have been months or perhaps forever in recovery. I need to wait several weeks before my ankle is weight bearing. The only negative was that Shands Emergency Trauma contacted Ocala company OxyLife, to provide me needed home medical equipment. My personal assessment is that OxyLife is a home medical equipment company to be avoided. Bad, very bad. My recommendation to Shands is to remove them from their approved vendor list. read more

Our entire family just had a horrifying experience at Shand's Medicual ICU. I feel sorry for anyone who has to be treated there - filthy (our father passed away from the infections he caught there while being "treated"), the doctor's (especially the lead doctor who controls the unit) are terrible and the nurses are a crapshoot - some were decent, but most were brutal - didn't care and were just going through the motions without any feeling or show of emotion or being human. Unfortunately, for ICU patients, you usually cannot pick/choose a hospital, but for those going through (or with a relative going through) a risky surgery, etc. that may require this unit to care for you if complications arise, please look elsewhere. The place should be written up. :( read more

DO NOT EVER COME TO THIS HOSPITAL OR ANY UF/SHANDS PLACES. This is the absolute WORST, pathetic excuse of a hospital I've ever seen. My partner went in around 10:30am in an ambulance after collapsing and having over 10 seizures. They took 13, YES THIRTEEN HOURS to "evaluate" her. Not to even mention how filthy disgusting it is. By evaluate I mean make her wait 9 straight hours, do ONE test, an EEG test, then said they would review and have the results back within the hour. After hour 2 i started calling to see how much progress they had made, as EEG's generally only take about an hour max to review. So I called. And called. And called. AND CALLED SOME MORE. So unless you want to waste your entire day, insurance, and money, by all means go to Shands. If you want ACTUAL CARE, you need to go to NORTH FLORIDA REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER. PLEASE IF YOU WANT TO LIVE. I have been there 3 times myself and the max wait I've ever had was when I had a boxers fracture which took only 3 hours, In and out, full cast and all.
