For dinner, I was feeling American-Chinese and I ordered Moo Shu Vegetables and General Tso's Chicken to a total of $30. Both dishes come with either a side of white rice or brown rice (+$1). 1. General Tso's Chicken. Fully meets expectations. Pretty standard and tastes just as you expect from any other restaurant. It comes on a bed of broccoli. 2. Moo Shu Vegetables. Traditionally, this dish comes with a type of meat, and a mix of scrambled eggs, and slices of wood ear mushrooms, bamboo, bean sprouts, carrots, and cucumbers. Unfortunately, perhaps this could be affected by the pandemic, but all I could taste was a mix of cabbage (similar to what you would expect if you saute a Costco Salad Mix package). It does come with 4 wraps which tastes standard. Service was extremely fast and on point. It only took around 15 minutes after ordering through Uber Eats to ready-to-pick-up. read more

Another hidden treasure found, partially due to fellow yelpers. Went for lunch recently with some co-workers and although I always knew this place existed, had just overlooked it, not knowing how great it was. It's in a small strip mall on a busy stretch of the Post Road and definitely easy to miss. The place is very small, but tastefully decorated with lovely artwork, large wood tables and high back chairs. I believe the woman up front is the owner, along with her husband. We initially were the only group eating at 1pm on a Friday although other patrons came in later on. Lunch menu is reasonable...runs from $6.50 to $7.50 for a fresh, wonderfully tasting and large meal. Regular menu is a little pricier but well worth it. The wonton soup had homemade wontons (not those pre-made ones that are probably frozen), veggies were crisp and fresh and chicken was tender and flavorful. My dish had eggplant on it which was tender and cooked just perfectly, even the skins that were left on. Lunch specials come with soup (3 types available) or a spring roll and a choice of white rice, fried rice OR brown rice (no extra charge). This is a place you can go, enjoy a quiet meal for 1 or for 5. The last thing is, is that the bathroom was clean and pristine...you can tell a lot about a restaurant by its bathroom! I'm not a huge fan of Asian food unless it's home cooked. We came here late on a Saturday night because my daughter insisted on non take out Asian food. I was not a happy camper after leaving New Haven where there are tons of options. I found this place on Yelp and had high hopes since there aren't many options on the way home. The wonton soup was an ok appetizer. The crab rangoons were like bowls of grease. I had to send them back. The steamed dumplings were great. For an entree, I ordered ginger chicken. It's fairly good but needs more ginger. I added mustard and jacked up the flavor completely. Don't be like me! My daughter got pad Thai. She barely finished half of it. Huge portion....not sure of the flavor but she dumped a ton of soy sauce and lemon on it. I got Pan fried noodles for my son. Definitely not what I expected but he enjoyed it. Hidden away in a strip mall, this restaurant is a pleasant surprise. I loved the bronze-covered tables and wood chairs. We were served tea and crispy noodles by, whom I was told, was the owner. Service was good. Great Chinese food. I had the lunch special, eggplant and chicken in garlic sauce, brown rice and veggie hot and sour soup. The brown rice was hard. I have been living in the west haven/orange area for about a 6 months now, and I'm relieved to say that thanks to my fellow yelpers, I've now found my go-to Chinese food spot. Ever since moving from New Haven, I have been striking out with Chinese restaurants in the area. I decided to expand my search out into the boston post road when I was in that area and hungry for takeout. The reviews for Shanghai Gourmet were stellar, and after trying their food, there's no surprise why. I ordered the General tsaos with pork fried rice and boneless spare ribs. My food was prepared quickly and it was reassuring to know it would be fresh. Moreover, the staff could not have been friendlier. I even forgot my soda in the cooler on the way out and the woman at the register came running out to flag me down. The fried rice was some of the best I've had in a while. The general tsaos was juicy and tasted like real chicken, which is always a plus, and the ribs had a nice grilled char that you don't see often (my preference). The egg rolls were phenomenal and the food coma was real. Shanghai Gourmet was a very nice find, and I owe it to the thorough and honest reviews of the previous yelpers. According to their menu, they deliver, so I'm looking forward to seeing if they'll make the 10 minute drive to West Haven. That being said, if they didn't deliver it would be worth the drive for takeout. Between the reasonable prices and the excellent quality of the food, Shanghai Gourmet has locked themselves in as my second favorite Chinese spot in the state. read more

Shanghai Gourmet is the best Chinese Restaurant I have found in the New Haven area. Not only is the food great, but the couple who own and run it are really nice and incredible people (he did paintings on the walls, each either solo or as part of a collaboration). Highlights include: 1. There are two types of restaurants in the world. Those that put a delicious starch on your table when you walk in, and those that do not. This is part of the former group. 2. A lot of the dishes come with your choice of protein, with tofu as an option. 3. Free wine with dinner. 4. They really pay attention to your preferences when making suggestions on what to order, and then when preparing your food. I usually assume that sauces I eat at restaurants have a high chance of containing chicken stock, so I was very surprised when they went so far as to tell us they had even used "the vegetarian skillet" in preparing our food. read more

Shanghai Gourmet is an excellent spot for high quality Chinese/Thai style food prepared with fresh ingredients. It really makes a difference when Asian themed food is cooked fresh. It's not as heavy and you don't finish the meal regretting what you ordered and dreading the digestion process. My wife and I tried three dishes on this visit. For the appetizer, it was Szechuan dumplings served with peanut sauce. Truly excellent. Hand made and with just enough kick. And this comes from someone not all that fond of peanut sauce. The two entrees were a Thai style spicy mango pork and the wok grilled garlic shrimp. The pork had an excellent balance of spice and sweet and was served with plenty of mango to complement the meat. The shrimp dish was definitely advertised right. Plenty of garlic and assorted veggies to pair with the shrimp. Both these entrees were outstanding and full of taste and came with choice of white or brown rice. I will be going back to try the crispy sea scallops served with string beans in a special sauce that I spied at the next table. They were huge and more than enough for two. Prices for all of these different dishes seem very fair for what you get in terms of quality and portion size. Service is quick but not overly friendly. Blink and you'll miss this hidden gem as you travel the Boston Post Road in Orange. It's tucked into a space next to a strip mall. But if you aspire to more than MSG laden takeout, then this is your spot. read more

I know better to order a Thai dish from a regular Chinese restaurant. But the other day my better judgment was on vacation. So I ordered the chicken with Thai curry and it was unlike any Thai dish I have eaten in the past. It was bad and I would not order it again. I think next time I'll stick to the regular Chinese items on the menu. The inside of this restaurant is small but very nice. It's very clean. This is an above average Chinese restaurant that has some unusual offerings (Thai dishes, for example, with mango) as well as hyper-authentic Szechuan dishes (mapo tofu, dan dan noodles, etc.). Many of their authentic Szechuan dishes aren't listed on the online menu, but you can check them out on a handwritten menu circulated in the restaurant itself. I liked their "Szechuan Peppercorn with tofu" lunch special ($8) but this dish was more of a basic stir-fry than anything else; I didn't taste the peppercorns at all. The dish was artfully presented on the plate, though, which was a nice touch you don't normally see at stripmall Chinese joints. The mapo tofu ($11) can be made with vegan by omitting the pork, and I liked the colorful nature of the dish (peas and carrots add to the white tofu and chili-colored sauce). The dish, while flavorful, doesn't rate as highly for me as the more spartan, spicy and authentic mapo down the road at Lao Sze Chuan. Lastly, their Chinese broccoli with garlic ($9) was a simple, tasty vegetable dish. No surprises here: it's just Chinese broccoli and garlic in a light sauce. I love that they offer brown rice. Also, the service here is always friendly. All in all, I like Shanghai Gourmet, but I prefer Lao Sze Chuan half a mile down the road. read more

We happened in on a Saturday afternoon, when their lunch specials menu is in effect (though it's not on Sundays). The lunch menu offers a nice range of choices. In general, everything we had was cooked nicely and was flavorful. We very much enjoyed the Eggplant in Garlic Sauce and Pork in Szechuan Peppercorn Sauce; the General Tso's was cooked with a perfect crispiness, but was too sweet. The soups that accompany the lunch specials were quite nice too - we had the Wonton and the Hot & Sour. Service is attentive and friendly, and the prices are quite good. I'm definitely looking forward to returning and ordering from the standard dinner menu. For an area that's short on quality Chinese restaurants, this could be my new go-to. read more

I've eaten here a few times. Once a few days ago and other times while visiting a few years back. I must say that their decor was still neat and inviting. A good sign of great management. The menu has not changed much from what I remember and they still have a great variety. I've dined in Chinatown NYC where you can get the best Chinese food outside of China itself. I avoid trendy touristy spots and instead dine with the 'natives' so to speak. That is always a great barometer for amazing food. My palette is trained for incredible ingredients, superior quality meats, unique spice combinations and veges made to perfection. Chinatown (very close to Little Italy btw for those not familiar) has me spoiled. I have not found that spot in CT that can dazzle my Chinese food fetish yet but as I search I will continue to patronize them for their yummy food. I am particularly fond of their string bean dishes always perfectly cooked without being overdone or to crunchy. My mom usually gets the tofu and raves about it but I like real meat so you will have to take her word for it!! LOL Oh!! And the service is great as well. Very friendly. Went here this evening and did not have a good experience. First of all the waitress (owner?) took a long time to even acknowledge us even though they weren't that busy. Then after ordering, she insisted that it was our fault that one of our orders didn't come out ("You never ordered that!", she said, even though we all heard the order go in.) The food was mediocre at best, basically over-seasoned, Americanized Chinese food, with too much soy sauce on everything and too much salt. Then later when I went up to pay and had a question while the owner was on the phone (I never interrupted her) and instead of holding up 1 finger to say "Just a sec...", she literally waved her hands at me and shooed me away! Shanghai Gourmet is very consistent and very welcoming. The owners are well known and are working every time I go. I like Shanghai because it is one of the only Chinese restaurants around that serves fresh food. I usually get the steamed mixed vegetables with tofu and the vegetables are not over or under cooked. The brown rice is never sticky or hard. The sauces are excellent, not overly salty or sweet. My uncle and my father rave about the Peking Duck (menu special) and the service is great. Recently I ordered a large take out dinner without calling and within 10 minutes had my food. I was also offered water while I waited. I recommend the tofu vegetable soup, scallion pancakes, sesame noodles and the General Tso's tofu. Also, ask for green tea when you go; it's not on the menu. The lunch specials are great and this place is great for take-out. Shanghai is very popular because the food is prepared correctly, the service is friendly, they offer a free glass of wine with dinner, and it's affordable. read more

Worst experience in recent memory - totally bizzaro. Went with my mother, who'd asked for a dish with bokchoy. However, the owner/waitress insisted that she hadn't and refused to budge and agree with her. All she had to do was bring a plate of greens! I used my debit card to pay, mentioning that the situation could have all easily been corrected, The woman loudly announced that my card didn't go through. I asked for a receipt, which stated that she'd purposely aborted the transaction. My bank's phone app told me I had more than enough to pay the bill. I specifically asked because we are about 5 minutes from the restaurant and I would have went to pick it up had she been honest from the beginning.
