This is one of the places that of you don't know you could walk right by. Shang Hai Market. An establishment that sells Asian & West Indian foods. Went in here around the upcoming holiday to get some bun and cheese. To my surprise they had a good amount of West Indian foods/snacks and beverages. The store had a good amount of foot traffic coming in and out. There is also a down stairs. I didn't pop down there, so not to sure what's down there. I am new to the area and this is the best Chinese I have yet to find. The hot and sour soup is terrific. Great flavor, spice, and variety of ingredients. The fried dumplings were good, I really like the dough. Other highlights were the egg roll, which is one of the best ones I've had and the bbq pork fried rice. Rice was perfect. Your basic American Chinese restaurant. I ordered a general tsos lunch special. For 50 cents extra you can get a wonton soup with that. The fried rice is what I personally describe visually as atomic yellow. It tastes real plain. As did the wonton broth. The chicken was good. I also ordered a side of fried dumplings. Also, not bad. No restroom here though. Three tables with 4 chairs at each for the dining area. And they do deliver with a minimum order of $12. Prices appear cheap, menu is typical. Two Hispanic men came in and ordered a fried half chicken with shrimp fried rice. It reminded me that everybody orders something they personally like and that, hey the idea of a half fried chicken with fried rice for less than $10 Is a steal! read more

Shang Hai is a difficult review for me, because of all the Chinese take-out places in New Haven, this is the best I've had. At the same time, I don't really like it that much. The problem is mainly that Chinese take-out in New Haven stinks. Shang Hai is an alright place, I guess. The General Tso's Chicken that I order is always crispy and fried well. The sauce usually tastes good, and for the most part there is usually enough (sometimes they're too skimpy on the sauce, but that's the exception, not the rule). The biggest problem is that the food very often tastes "fishy," like they fry too much fish in the same machine. I imagine that all Chinese places do this, so I'm not sure exactly why this one suffers the problem worse than any others. Incidentally, the store is connected to a fish market, and it always smells like fish inside, as well. I also don't get the vibe that it's the cleanest place on earth... All in all, I continue my search for something better, but until I find it, I'll keep ordering from Shang Hai when I don't feel like taking a chance on an unknown. read more

If you are going to do Chinese takeout I would recommend Shang Hai. I think they make their foods there a lot better than some of the other places. They know how to properly spice the food and the people that work there are very friendly. The food is prepared well and fast, plus, it is consistent. There $4 special are a great deal and you seem to get more bang for your buck there in general. read more

I had to give this Chinese restaurant a four star only because I've been looking for good Chinese food in New Haven for a while, and this place is the best I had. There shrimp fried rice is really good, because the shrimp is fresh, the chicken wings are okay could be better. However, I'm willing to try other things on the menu. We were skeptical about ordering from here because of past reviews were up and down. We order basic combo meals and were amazed that they delivered within 30 mins. Food was good! My hubby and I used to buy take out from here a lot when we lived here circa 2008-2011. We really had no problems. It wasn't the greatest but wasn't the worst either. Well we live in hamden now and our usual place is closed on Mondays. My son wanted Chinese and my hubby was in the area so he picked some up. Bad idea. My son found a COCKROACH on his chicken and broccoli. Never again! I'm appalled and frankly embarrassed that I ever ate here. read more

This is the best Chinese food I have found in the area. Lunch portions are HUGE. It's a pretty good value. One thing I have noticed is the egg rolls seem to be getting smaller but oh well. read more
