Last April, I was speeding north on Route 113 in Eastville, Virginia when stopped by the local constabulary and given a summons to pay a fine, appear in their court in Northampton, VA, or take a driver improvement course online for the chance of a dismissal of the charge. Within days the USPS inundated my mailbox with close to a dozen solicitations from local eastern shore lawyers seeking to represent me in court for what seemed reasonable fees/costs.
How to choose when I didn't know any of them, but realized I also didn't know the legal system in Virginia, and guessed they loved to play hardball with Yankees just passing through (In some places the Civil War is still in litigation). I looked at all the adverts and decided to go with a small firm whose literature was the most relaxed and the least bombastic - Shannon & Associates of Chesapeake. Their fee for representation was only $150, and they clearly explained the online driver education option, with its separate cost and the time needed to complete the course to meet a September court date.
All the communication was via email from their excellent paralegal Becky Keyes after the first phone call with Kirsten Shannon, senior partner. I signed up for the recommended course and began studying their 9 classes, stories and videos; each with a test at the end that made sure I looked at all the information because the questions covered everything presented. It took me about two weeks to get through the course (still working full time), but passed all the tests. I printed the Certificate of Completion and sent it to the firm with the final court costs.
Today I was notified that the charge was dismissed by the court and my driving abstract remained unblemished by this indiscretion.
Everyone I dealt with at Shannon and Associates was professional, knowledgeable and appropriately friendly. They know their stuff, as every lawyer should, but more importantly they knew how to relate to their clients, informing me while putting me at ease. True, I am an attorney in PA and NJ who has done similar work in my career, and I appreciate when my lawyer treats me as well as I treat my clients. For that they receive a standing ovation.
5 Stars and any referrals that come my way for representation on the Virginia eastern shore and Hampton Roads. read more
