The two shifus put up with a lot especially from the younger kids but they're patient and structured. Also handsome according to my mother in law. Decent price and if you can make earlier weekday or late weekend classes it's not too crowded. Sometimes in the summer it's like 4 kids in a class. They basically do like 15 mins of conditioning/warm up and then the rest of class practicing motions. My younger one hates repeating the motions and just wants to punch things but he does a pretty good job. read more

Some of the Teachers need to be more in tune towards kids emotional well being. There is something wrong with the teaching style if young children are crying in class and reluctant to attend class. The owner needs to monitor the teachers. Overseas teaching style is not the way kids learn here! read more

My son started here at 3.5 years old and he was a very stubborn kid. He now got the white belt and behave much better. He follows instruction and respects the sifu (he doesnt respect or listen to any teachers). I really like the sifu here. They are super experience, patient and dedicated. They really invest in teaching the kids kungfu. I tried to get my daughter to kungfu but she was so into girls related stuff. We moved from another Kung Fu studio to Ben's Kung Fu early this year in search for a program which better fits my son's needs. My son is mainly interested in forms and weapons rather than routine practice of kicks and jumps. In the old school, he often developed aches in his ankle and knee from jumping too much in Kung Fu class such that he had to abstain from a couple lessons every now and then (in addition Middle School P.E. is already quite intensive). This school works out perfect for him as the focus is on practice of forms and weapons. My son hasn't been absent for a single lesson due to leg pain ever since he joined which is really wonderful news. As for instruction, Master Ben is a skilled martial artist, and a kind and excellent teacher at the same time. As an observing parent and Kung Fu novice, I am often enlightened by the explanations he made about various forms and moves (many "Aha!" moments). The masters also periodically review weapons and forms previously learnt to make sure that the kids retain their skills. I find that immensely useful for students' training and mastery of each weapon. One of the horrors of learning Kung Fu is that at any point in time, the only thing you remember is the weapon which you are currently learning and nothing else. You won't have that problem here. The only back side of this school is that it is a little crowded, but there are a couple masters and practice is split into groups which keeps kids busy most of the time. Overall we are happy with this school and I look forward to seeing my son become a real black belt master one day! read more

This school is highly recommended for parents who want their kids to exercise, learn life skills, learn how to focus, be disciplined, be respectful, and raise their self-esteem and confidence. We first started our boy by taking Kung Fu class in his after school to learn some fundamental martial skills. The instructor actually is from this Shaolin Kung Fu International School and our son really enjoyed this class. Later on when we went to our boy's after school performance show, we saw Master (Shifu) Ben showed his professional Kung Fu skills on the stage. Being Chinese we immediately realized Master Ben is a true Master, not someone just playing showy and non-practical martial arts. So we signed our son up for classes with this school and it was one of the best decisions we ever made. Up to date, our son has been taking classes here for about seven months. With Master Ben and Master Song's guidance, he has advanced two levels of belts. He's so excited on learning fists such as five motions and XiaoHong fist. He also learned how to practice broad sword and is expecting to learn nunchakus, Kung Fu Fan, Shaolin staff etc. Besides that, the most important thing is our son also improved listening, focus, discipline and respectful behavior from this school. He used to be a little shy, and by taking classes here, he is gaining more self-confidence as well. In this school, Masters (Shifu) not just teach a particular skill, they teach a system that is composed of many different styles of Kung fu, which is merged together into a complete curriculum that includes exercise, self-defense, breathing, fighting and weapons. Masters (Shifu) here also have outstanding personality, professional martial skills, and an amazing level of patience and care towards the kids they work with. I'm a big fan of marital arts. Been that way for as long as I can remember. So joining the this martial arts studio was at first intimidating, as I'd expected people of greater skills and a more youthful appearance to be the core patronage. But I'm wrong. There are lots of adults who just want to a good workout and have an activity in common with their child. Even singles are actively involved in the studio. I've been with Ben's Kung-fu--Sunnyvale, for a year this coming MLK 2009. And I'm still enjoying my time. They closed down the Sunnyvale branch and opened up the Palo Alto branch. I haven't advanced my belt recently, but that's because I want to make my forms and stances look much better than a duck stance. If you're looking to use the techniques you learn here as a self-defense, you're in for a big surprise. I am realizing that although the techniques can be deadly, if used properly, it will take a long time for muscle memory to occur. Although, I'm considered advance level, I'm a bit embarrassed to show off what I learned, just because I still look like a duck. But I'm physically more fit than I was in high school or college. So the duck stance really doesn't matter to me -- that much. The instructors are pretty strict with kids. So if you are going to coddle your child if he (the royal he/she) gets hurt or yelled at, then this place isn't for your family. Leave the disciplining to the instructors. They'll do a better job during the one hour session. To be honest, I don't like every single instructor. But the majority of them will take you as seriously as you want to take the workout. If you are serious about it, they will help you improve. If you are just there for a work-out, then you're gonna get one. O. Be patient with the instructors' English. This review is for the summer camp. Coach Ben and other coaches are kind yet disciplined to kids with various ages. They could engage kids with appropriate training and fun activities including Chinese calligraphy. Everyday, the kids brought back home some new techniques to fight and/or defend. Also, they shared with us what happened during the day. The coaches are very nice to help order lunches. Bottom line kids have so much fun and sweat a lot at the camp. We've been coming here for over six months now and so far so good. We started our six years old son here as a way to get exercise so he's not always home building Legos or watching TV. The facility is spacious and airy. The owner and primary instructor is kind and really good with kids. The kids all start with no belt and slowly work their way to higher levels. We only come here once a week (b/c we have no time, though I'm debating twice this coming summer) on Sunday, and it's always crowded. This place offers a good balance of physical exercise, discipline (listening/following instruction) and martial arts movements. I doubt the kids learn any real martial arts, but at this age, it's really about exercise, participation and commitment to take it seriously and keep it up. Due to popularity, the classes could get super crowded for beginners (white and yellow belts). There is usually an assistant instructor and class will break out into groups with roughly 1:10 ratio, or pending on level. They also encourage students to take turns to lead other students, which is nice I think. For a small, but popular gym, they operate efficiently, never had an issue w/ admin stuff like fees or scheduling. I'd give five star if they could open more classes on weekends so it's not so congested. Also worth mentioning is the location - the gym has a seating area with four chairs and often lots of parents, but the location is super convenient. There's a nice cafe next door if you just want to relax and pass the time. There's the Richmond market with fresh produce at great prices just few steps away. And of course, Cupertino Village is one block down the road. read more

Would add -- is good about adding the next piece of the form in a way so you practice the new and the loop back to the beginning which is a great way to learn. I find this studio a good place to achieve your best results as long as you come in with a good mindset. I suggest attending at least twice if not three times per week otherwise advancement is very difficult unless you are one to practice diligently. Price is pretty reasonable. You can pay to attend as little or as much as you like. Instructors mix in self defense at times although it is not the primary focus. I'm almost 47 and it's funny to work out with teenagers but it all seems to work. read more

Ben is the best shaolin teacher. Having been a superb shaolin monk himself, he can really explain things well to the kids. He has great emotional intelligence, and is a very good motivator. I recommend doing Kung fu with Ben especially if you play another sport. It is good to cross train. I am very lucky I found Ben's company! My 8 year old son has been training at the Cupertino location for a year now. The Shifus here are very good and give a lot of individual attention where needed. The kids seem to love it here. Due to the weekend crowd, Sat and Sun classes focus more on endurance and repetition versus weekdays, which focus more on form. I've noticed that since the Shifus here know the kids so well, they're good at adapting the class activities to where the kids need improvement. Shifu Ben pushed my son hard to get him to compete in the competition a few months into starting. At first I felt it was too soon, but Shifu Ben knew what he was doing. My son learned a lot from the experience and brought him to a new level of understanding. Now we've just enrolled our younger son as well. Overall, I would highly recommend this place! read more

This is a great school. I studied martial arts with moderate intensity for three + years until my son was born and very little regular practice since then. Now I am back 18 years later. Although I am quite fit for my demographic, my old memories really show how age has changed my conditioning! This school is disciplined and also friendly and fun; a mix I think is vital for learning almost anything. I am only 4 lessons into the program and I am finding a lot of depth to what we are shown, though I can see how someone with little or no experience coming in, they might not be aware of all they are learning from some of the drills. There is a fair amount of color and diversity in the material. My 17 year old son is coming too and he really enjoys it a lot. I also want to add that it is very broadening to see how different schools and masters teach. In spite of learning several animal forms and other empty hand forms at my other school, here I am already being shown some different approaches to sparring and different kinds of strikes. Bottom line is it is fun and a rigorous workout, thoguh if you are coming only 2-3 days a week a seriously fit person will want to supplement with conditioning exercise on off days. read more

Anybody wrote here that they are strict and kid is really learning, is just not correct. My kid has been going there for last 1 year and I see they give belts for just trying. I can see kids with blue and higher belts do not have proper punch, chop or block or kick. If you looking a place just to be happy that your kid is getting belts not learning real stuff so he can use when it is needed then it is correct place. I want my kid to learn self defense so he can defend himself not just show that he is black belt. read more
