And they always want you to pay first before sending the dx to your insurance., Please Please let them send everything to your insurance first so you can pay the correct amount and not be overcharge. Similar to the other reviewers below, I am in my mid-twenties and haven't had cavities in the last 5 years. I relocated 2 years ago and never found a regular dentist to go to but right before I moved, I went to my regular dentist for routine check-up and cleaning. He never told me I had more cavities. My regular dentist had also told me about a baby tooth I had that was impacted but since there was no cavities and no sensitivity, it would be purely cosmetic if I wanted to do something about it. I have a narrow jaw but my upper teeth are pretty straight. Only 4-5 of my lower teeth are somewhat crooked but it is not noticeable unless you look up close. I came to see Dr Leavitt without checking Yelp first. BIG MISTAKE. First of all, the office was not clean. There were 15-20 pre-prepped and labeled syringes that were all filled to different levels (I assume filled with anesthetic and botox as they advertise doing botox there). None of the syringes were capped and ALL of the needles were bent. Were they clean or simply re-used between patients? I get that they are on 40th & Market and have many working class or African American patients, but there is NO excuse for subpar cleanliness and hygiene! Secondly, Dr. Leavitt was examining my teeth and using the suction to clear my saliva during the exam, but the suction had no sheath over it. My regular dentist always has sheaths over the suction and water hose to prove that they sterilize the equipment between patients. Looking back, this should have been a BIG RED FLAG. I also got 20 Xrays which she says is standard to get pictures of all my teeth. Now, the hygienist/assistant was very nice and did a great job taking the Xrays without causing bleeding or pain but I can't say the office's practice is ethical. Dr. Leavitt told me I have 6-8 cavities, plus an old filling that needed to be refilled now, and that I need to purchase her EnamelOn fluoride paste for $25 out of pocket (I can get it for $12 on Amazon). She then told me I should get an orthodontic referral regarding the impacted baby tooth to see if I should get it removed and then get braces because it could impact my cavity health. However, she let me leave the office without the referral or script or even telling me the name/phone number of whom I am being referred to. I was told the tooth colored fillings would cost $40 extra per filling and according to my insurance Delta Dental PPO, I would have to pay 20% out of pocket leading to $239 in services cost for cleaning and filling. I agreed to schedule a time for fillings, even though this seemed quite alarming considering I have not had new cavities in the last 5 years prior. I have never been pressured by my regular dentist back home to get braces since only 4-5 of my lower teeth are somewhat crooked but it is not even noticeable in pictures yet Dr. Leavitt was trying to convince me to get braces. Now that I've checked Yelp, I am definitely cancelling the filling appointment until I can get a second and third opinion. read more

Not great. Staff is nice but... I went 3 times -Each of my visits I saw a different dentist. Poor continuity of care -braces were suggested for no reason other than aesthetics. I did not enquire about braces so this was pretty rude unsolicited (and an upsell) -when going in for a cleaning, I was told the polisher was broken and I'd have to come back to get the second stage of my cleaning. Thanks so much to the upbeat, efficient, and caring office of Dr. Leavitt. Having several major procedures, I kept expecting the pain or a problem to pop up. But it didn't. I'm home, several hours post extraction with implant and I feel great. The gentle care that I received obviously influenced the smooth recovery. I'm sitting at my computer working as if nothing happened. Shout out to the wonderful staff from Dr. Cabrera, to Minerva at the front desk and to Dayna and the marvelous assistants. I went to visit Dr Leavitt as a new patient first of all they were suppose to verify my insurance before arrival. However, they took me in the back I advised them that I have an X-ray that was taken in October, but they insist that they want to take another correct X-ray. Then I was told that they had me in the office to get to know me and I have to make another appointment for consultation and that will cost me $275 and that was not covered by my insurance, and I have to pay out of pocket. That was not even correct. At that point I was very upset, and I did not want to come back. I was also told by the doctor it will cost me $30000 for implant and was never given options. It is very upsetting. I came home and called Metlife and explained everything to them They advised me that they already put the claim in. I advise people to watch out for this practice. read more

They fit me in for an emergency appointment today when I thought my tooth was disintegrating. The staff is so nice, Dr. Leavitt is incredibly friendly and informative. I was scared to go to the dentist without insurance, but the time finally came today. Dr. Leavitt's staff are wonderfully thoughtful, sweet and accommodating. However, I cannot recommend her services as a dentist. During my regular six month check up, Leavitt told me that I have four cavities (an exceptional amount given that I was there just six months ago). She asked me to get my teeth measured for fluoride trays ($100 out of pocket, which she didn't tell me until I asked, she also told me that there was no guarantee that this would make any difference), which I told her I didn't want since I already drink tap water (lots), use toothpaste with fluoride, AND got my teeth coated in fluoride by her. I asked to get all four cavities filled at once, because I have a very busy work schedule and it is difficult for me to take time off to come to the dentist. When I returned for my follow-up appointment, she filled two cavities. Then after filling two, she told me that once of them will need a root canal or a crown. I asked her to explain what would be best and she didn't offer me any suggestions, I told her "I don't know what to do." She responded, "You're not supposed to know what to do." Well, since I'm not a DENTIST, I'm still lost as to what I'm supposed to do! She then ended the appointment and did not fill the other two cavities! I asked her, what about the other two cavities that you were supposed to fill today? She told me that time was up and that I would have to schedule another appointment. She had already numbed both sides of my mouth, and only filled cavities on one side. This is the second time that she told me that I would need a root canal. The first one she seems to have forgotten about entirely. This second one is confusing because she told me that I could get a crown and then get a root canal later. Or just just a root canal now. But she couldn't tell me what would be the best situation for me, as a person, with teeth. As other reviewers have mentioned, it feels like she keeps suggesting more and more dental work, with no end in sight. I do not appreciate being loaded up with Novocain, only to be dismissed for asking questions about my oral health that she refused to answer with any clarity. I have decided that I will not be returning to her offices after this most recent appointment. Additionally, I find myself having to wait 20 minutes to be seen, every time I arrive on time for my appointment. read more

I lived in Philadelphia for three years and, during that time, started to visit Dr. Leavitt for my dental care. I had previously been going to the same dental practice for my whole life and had nothing but positive experiences. I should've seen the red flags immediately. I told the dental assistant that I didn't want x-rays, but she told me that Dr. Leavitt refused to see me without taking x-rays. Then, once I was examined, Dr. Leavitt told me I had a laundry list of concerns that she needed to take care of: pre-gingivitis and two fillings that needed to be taken out and re-filled. I was shaken by this, so I acquiesced to everything Dr. Leavitt suggested. I purchased expensive anti-gingivitis mouthwash from the office, and I scheduled a separate, special de-scaling procedure that was supposedly crucial to preventing gingivitis from developing. (Dr. Leavitt refused to clean and polish my teeth without doing this de-scaling procedure.) After I had the first of my cavities re-filled, I began experiencing sensitivity when biting down on that tooth. By this point, I was skeptical of Dr. Leavitt and declined to continue with the procedures she had recommended, preferring to wait until I re-located again and could go back to my old dentist. For the past almost-year, I have received countless emails, phone calls, and text messages from Dr. Leavitt's office, attempting to get me to schedule further appointments. Today, I went back to my old dentist for an exam and cleaning. They contacted Dr. Leavitt's office to get my old x-rays, and the receptionist became rude and hung up on them. My dentist told me that my teeth are in excellent health (no signs of gingivitis). They will have to replace the filling that Dr. Leavitt replaced in order to get rid of a void in the filling to allow me to eat normally again. I would strongly advise against going to Dr. Leavitt for your oral care. Based on my experiences, I believe that she uses and manipulates patients with insurance in order to make money off of them, and the work that she does is sub-par and damaging. read more

Dr. Leavitt and her staff are fantastic. She works carefully and efficiently to ensure your teeth are in fighting form. She educates you on dental hygiene and talks you through procedures, so you know what is happening. You can even watch with a hand mirror. Scheduling appointments is never a problem, and the receptionists go out of their way to work with you. Today (at the afternoon appointment I scheduled this morning) Minerva called my insurance company's customer service (the worst, right?) to figure out my exact plan. Another receptionist was patient and persistent enough to play phone tag with me when I had questions about some medical stuff. I didn't have dental insurance for a time and they put me on the "office plan" through which every other preventive visit was free. The office is super clean and every chair faces a long, tall windowed wall. The location, 40th/Market, is what it is. If you are a stickler for swanky locations, you might be freaked out as you walk through 40th street market after passing the projects across the street. Home sweet Philly! I really like how Dr. Leavitt, a Penn Dental grad, stayed in the neighborhood. She is an asset to the community. I was having trouble with a tooth, and hadn't located a dentist here in Philadelphia to call my own. I ended up paying Dr. Leavitt a visit after reading reviews on her and her office here. Everything that everyone has said about the level of professionalism and just genuine good nature of everyone employed at this office makes one's visit there quite the pleasant experience. The office is clean and quiet. The staff is polite, knowledgeable, patient, and more than willing to take all the time you need to explain every procedure as well as various payment options. I've never had a more gratifying experience at a dentist's office. Sidenote: As a previous reviewer mentioned, the office can be a little hard to locate... that is unless one is taking advantage of public transit. Entire family and I have been patients of Dr Leavitt for many years. Previously used a Center City practice, also good, but left them because I felt like they were always pushing an upsell. Dr Leavitt is in business, offers all those same services (whitening, eg), but she has always felt consultative rather than salesy, and we have been very happy with every aspect of the care she and her people provide. If an appointment is for 9 o'clock, you're in the chair by 9, or 910 latest. The hygienists who do the cleanings are meticulous. I've never known better. Making a decision to open your practice in a predominately black low income neighborhood makes you responsible for providing several options of payment and other avenues to receive treatment outside of state issued, regulated medical insurance. I avoided going to the dentist for a really long time! Because I had such a painful experience previously at a different dentist, that I was deathly afraid of going to the dentist again. I was fearing that all dentist are alike. Finally I could not put off the pain in my mouth any longer. So I came to grips with the fact that I needed to see someone. I have a few friends that already go to Dr. Leavitt's office, so that's how I found this gem of a dentist. I do live in Upper Darby. But a quick trip on the Market-Frankford EL gets me there in no time. It's worth the trip anyway. I feel when you find something good it's worth a little travel. The inside of the office is clean. The waiting room is small, but I don't think they use it much. So i guess it doesn't matter. I've never had to wait in the waiting room. They always take me right back. All the staff are very warm, welcoming, friendly, and genuine. The most so that I've experienced in a health care setting. They are helpful with scheduling, if you have questions about insurance, or explaining other things as well. They don't mind taking time to help. The exam area is nice and clean. It seems pretty state of the art. The view is nice, there are large windows to look out and pretty trees to look at. There is music playing to help you relax. Something else I've personally appreciated is that during the exam if you have trouble looking at lights. They have these very fashionable glasses that are perfect to wear, so you don't have to shut your eyes or squint. Maybe not a big deal to some people, but that's something that's always bothered me is struggling with lights in my eyes. Dr. Leavitt is really good at what she does. She's professional, very knowledgeable, gentle, warm, friendly, genuine, easy to talk to, and she explains things well. One thing I appreciate most is that she doesn't rush you in and out of the office. She really takes time to talk to you and explain what she sees and what your options are to fix it. She's never been pushy or insisted that I get something done. And to help you trust her word more. She'll go through your x-rays and show you why she is saying you need a procedure done. You really become empowered with knowledge about your teeth. What keeps me away from dentist's and doctor's is that feeling that your just a $ sign. You wait....wait....wait... only to be rush out of the office before you solve what you came for in the first place. Dr. Leavitt is NOT that way. I've seen Dr. Leavitt 5 times now. And from the first visit, she helped me feel comfortable being there. She tells you what she's doing before she does it. She makes sure your numb enough and the medicine has really taken effect before she starts. That thoughtfulness you do not see everywhere. She has really helped melt my titanic size fear of the dentist. Every visit, I've experience little to no pain. And only slight aching every now and then. I also need to mention the periodontist, Dr. Maki Ishii. My experience with Dr. Ishii was wonderful. She exhibits the same professional, warm, genuine, friendly, knowledgeable, well explained and easy to talk to demeanor Dr. Leavitt has. This is not always what you get from a specialist. But an added bonus to an already wonderful office. So if you've been afraid of going to the dentist look no further! You'll see what I mean when you get there. It'll be worth it. so here is my ordeal. I went in for a typical "check up" which I thought would include a teeth cleaning but really was only radiographs which is fine i totally understand doing that before a full cleaning. My real issues were when I had to have 3 cavities filled (I was still ok with that, I've had cavities before etc) but the real problem started when I started having pain in all of the teeth that were filled. The pain then proceeded to extreme pain, taking multiple pain killers in a day. When I went back I was basically told by an assistant that they can be sore for a while after the filling.....which I kindly reminded him should not last 3 weeks with such incredible pain that I cannot eat or drink anything that is not exactly body temperature. After having the fillings "filed down" a couple times because maybe they were too high and causing discomfort I was eventually referred to an endodontist to look at my teeth. This resulted in two root canals. So to repeat, I went in pain free for a teeth cleaning and left needing two root canals. I started doing the follow up with Dr. Leavitt and I felt as though every time I went there I needed a new "procedure" that would cost another 1000 dollars. I eventually got very fed up because I am a student and do not have 5,000 just lying around (and this is the cost with a good insurance plan) to do this work. After I was informed I needed a gum surgery in order to place the caps which would cost another 1400 dollars I decided to get a second opinion. It was next to impossible to get my records from them. I had to call multiple times, stop by 3 times, and they refused to email my x-rays to the other dentist. The other dentist remarked that they have never had so much trouble getting medicals records before. Long story short - I am not returning there and am going to finish my procedure elsewhere. Dr. Leavitt is a nice woman, I just felt as though the desire for a paycheck was getting in the way of objective dentistry, as noted in the remark she said to me when she referred me to a specialist "that she just hated to refer them out" - meaning - hated not getting the money in house. Also, because I am angry at the whole situation and probably wouldn't complain about this if I wasn't 5,000 in the hole, but I never once saw them wash their hands before gloving and I never saw them change the sterile preps on the handles etc. I did have a question on cleanliness of the place but they do have very advanced equipment like digital radiographs (which I don't know how important they are if they cannot even email them to a referring dentist) While I do feel as though she is a very competent dentist, I personally did not have a good experience and I would encourage others to question procedures that are done before committing time, money, and resources towards them. read more

Although Dr. Leavitt and her staff are nice and friendly, I cannot recommend going to her dental office. She was clearly more concerned with making money than providing quality dental care. Here's what happened to me: I only had one cavity and former dentists rarely suggested more than extra flossing. Then I went to Dr. Leavitt, who claimed I had three cavities and needed this expensive dental abrasion cleaning. I naively agreed. She also said all of my wisdom teeth had cavities and needed to be removed ASAP. She filled the cavities and performed the abrasion cleaning, which required that I use a special mouthwash for the following few days. I returned the next week to get my fillings filed down and complained of staining and yellowing from the mouthwash. She said I was not brushing well enough. I pointed out that she and her staff never performed a proper tooth cleaning where the technician scrapes all the plaque off of the teeth (the abrasion cleaning only does it along your gums). She said that wasn't needed! I asked what I needed to do in terms of brushing better. She turned out a children's video about how to brush your teeth and left. I've since seen a dentist who said all my teeth (including my wisdom teeth) are fine. My former dentist also said that the dental abrasion cleaning is a scam. I had two other friends who went to Dr. Leavitt who had almost the exact same experience. I think she tries this out on all new patients with dental insurance. read more

I have been to this dentist a few times; and I do not trust her. She had me replace all my cavity fillings, which resulted in a filling that fell out after two weeks. When I call her Friday night her response was "Don't worry about it." Then when I came in Monday to get it filled, she only put in a temporary filling and said I will need a crown. Turns out, I knew several people who have gone to her and have had bad experiences; including one friend who she drilled too far into his (one and only) cavity causing nerve damage so that he needed a root canal. Also, to get my xrays, it's a $25 fee because I'm going to get to get a second opinion. This is on top of the fact that the information from my dental insurance is that I have overpaid her, and that they'll give me a credit. read more

Dr. Leavitt is honest, knowledgeable, and professional. She will ensure that all her patients have GREAT long-term dental care. Unlike majority of dentists that I have experienced with, she will NEVER conduct unnecessary procedures to her patients. She will always provide with exactly what the patients need as opposed to giving in to providing what the patients "think" they need and want. Recently, Dr. Leavitt's associate, Dr. Ahn, started doing my dental care. I can't express enough how satisfied I am. I wished I had read all the negative reviews about this dental practice before scheduling my college aged daughter. It was her worst dental experience ever and was in tears during the entire visit. She went in for a routine exam and cleaning (covered by my insurance) and was diagnosed with moderate to severe gingivitis, did a different cleaning procedure and did NOT tell her there was a $125 copay. The dentist told her that she had cracks and needed a mouth guard. A week later a got an estimated quote from my insurance company for a $600 occlusal guards for bruxism. This type of aggressive sales tactics reminds me more of a used car dealership than a professional dental practice. Caveat Emptor. Buyers or patients beware. read more

While I like the doctor herself is ok she is very nice and will explain everything but she can be very short and doesn't have much bedside manners. Her front desk staff are rude nasty and to top it off Liars!!! BEWARE of Minerva she will lie and charge you for services up front even if your insurance pays for it. I work for one of the biggest companies in the state of Pennsylvania and have great coverage she told me I had welfare insurance. She is ignorant! I was also told I needed a different procedures every single time I went and that I had gum disease after getting a second opinion I was told that was untrue. I will never ever go back there. I wish there was more I could do to report Minerva for stealing from me, but hopefully this will deter anyone else from going there. read more

I was told by Dr. Leavitt that I would need over $2000 of dental work, including more than 4 fillings, oral surgery, a root canal, a mouth guard, and more. I do not have dental insurance. I went to another dentist who I have trusted in the past, who charged me $25 for a consultation, and said I needed absolutely no work done after looking at my x-rays and examining my teeth. He said if I needed a mouth guard, to go to a sporting goods store and get one there, not pay $700 for one. So, yeah. read more

If you like things done right, come here. Nobody likes going to the tire shop and hearing they need a whole new set cause one's got a nail in it and another's got a mismatched tread. But the best tire shops tell you these things because they have high standards, and that's what you came for. Dr. Leavitt has filled several cavities and pulled two wisdom teeth for me. The first cavity was scary, in a molar, and was a millimeter away from needing a root canal. Getting teeth pulled the first time is scary too; but the other work was a breeze. Some might argue the smaller cavities didn't need to be filled yet. Personally, I'd rather know the slightest problem, and have it corrected immediately. The choice is mine, after all. I find it helpful to come early but be prepared to wait a bit. Like every other doctor's office I've been to, they work on real problems in real time, and do their best to manage and delegate to make it all run smoothly. But sitting in the big chair you may really appreciate the time you spent in the waiting room. When I get stuck with a novacaine needle, my body goes into shock and I get an huge rush of adrenaline - an unpleasant one. Frankly, I just need to chill out. It happens to me with EVERY dentist. The difference with Dr. Leavitt is she respects that. More than once she's let me have 20 minutes or so to calm down before she starts drilling. I'm sure that messes up her schedule! The fact is, our teeth don't care what time it is. If I were her, I'd go check out another patient in the meantime too. And that time we spent in the waiting room? It was someone else's time to chill out. Like anyone else, I hate going to my doctor's office, knowing that the insurance company said they can only spend ten minutes with me. I don't feel like I'll always get the time I need. Dr. Leavitt, on the other hand, with the help of her staff, is very good at overlapping tasks among patients. Mouth trauma can be physically draining and it sneaks up on you. When you know you're getting dental work done, it's not a good time to rush. You need to take your time, maybe take the day off and meditate. And you need someone who can help you feel comfortable. That's Dr. Leavitt. read more

I went to Dr. Leavitt after my insurance changed and my lifetime dentist didn't accept it. A tooth had become rather painful and when I went to Dr. Leavitt for an emergency appointment, I was told I was going to have to have the tooth removed and an implant put in it's place. While the news frightened me, Dr. Leavitt patiently explained the procedure and showed me a video about it. She was very knowledgable and thorough. Dr. Maki Ishii, the periodontist, perfomed the surgery in the office a few weeks later and I had no pain during the procedure. She was very friendly and explained everything she was doing. She made me feel very comfortable. Dr. Leavitt came in to check on how things were going, which I thought very nice. It has been three days now since my tooth was removed and the implant put in, and I still have had little to no pain, little to no bleeding, and absolutely no swelling. I am so impressed with experiences with both Dr. Leavitt and Dr. Ishii! Stay away from this dentist . Not only do they they tell you you need very expensive procedures you don't really need, they scare you into believing you will lose all your teeth. I was seeing my old dentist every 6 months before he retired. He never mentioned my teeth needed any of these procedures. After I had the teeth abrasions and then my molars pulled I was now told I need all my cavities refilled. The bottom line for me was when I was told they were charging all their patients 15.00 for the COVID procedures they had to put in place to keep patients safe. THE PATIENTS HAVE TO PAY FOR THAT !!!!! I decided to switch dentists and now I'm told I have to pay 25.00 to have my Xrays EMAILED to my new dentist. Since when does email charge to send messages ?? The same Xrays me and my insurance company have paid for!! I am paying the 25.00 just to be rid of them and move to a dentist who cares more about my teeth than just making money! read more

I had a similar experience to other reviews. I am in my thirties and never had cavities. I came to see Dr Leavitt, and she told me I have 4 or 5 cavities, at least four need to be filled now, and that I have bad gum disease. I agreed to schedule a time for fillings, even though it seemed confusing. Luckily, I thought better of this and scheduled a second opinion. No cavities. It's been a year, 3 dental exams with a different dentist, 3 different sets of x rays - still no cavities. So I think she's doing something questionable. I also noticed later I had paid for something out of pocket they had also billed my insurance for. I contacted them and eventually got my money back, but it made me wonder about their practices. read more

I visited this office out of convenience because I go to school in Philadelphia. They claimed I needed an absurd amount of unnecessary dental work. Merely a scare tactic I assume. Followed up with my regular dentist for him to inform me that nothing they said was even remotely true. Malpractice by definition. Not even going to mention the hassle it was to get my xrays sent over, rude and unprofessional. Doc is a complete quack. Stay away! read more
