I don't give 1 star lightly, as you'll know if you look at my review history. But I feel compelled to WARN PEOPLE AWAY. Someone else noted they have been sold to PE, and it is clear they are now pushing unnecessary procedures (more on that at the end) and treating their clients badly. Their 5 star reviews are from years ago, and I would have given them a similar review when I started with them. I began with this practice 3 years ago, and felt confident in Dr Balin. A combination of personal matters and lack of insurance kept me away for ~18 months. When I went back in July, things had clearly changed. I was asked to fill out new patient information, which I found odd, but I'd been away for a while so, ok. Then, despite having done so in the past, they wouldn't file an insurance claim for me, and said I had to do it myself. It requires codes and whatnot that I didn't have. They said they would provide those, and yet I was emailed a copy of my charge receipt, and had to follow up 2x to get the detailed information. I was kept waiting for over 30 mins when I finally approached the reception desk and asked what was happening. Previously someone would have come over to tell me what was going on. I was barely acknowledged (no eye contact whatsoever), and told my hygienist was running behind. Ok, so you have a job you don't like and you're surly, I can understand that. When I finally do get to the treatment room, there is no acknowledgement that I had been kept waiting 45 mins. (there is a reason I'm detailing the wait -- it's not just the poor client relations) I am there for a routine cleaning. I have had very good teeth all my life, and I take good care of them. So she does some xrays, makes comments to herself but not me, then tells me I need scaling and planing, not just a routine cleaning, and they will start it today. I said, I know what that is and I'm surprised I need it, I don't know if my insurance will cover it, and so I don't want to start it today. She calls in Dr Balin, who says yes, it should be done; your teeth are in good condition but there is bacteria up in the gums. She leaves, then the hygienist says ok, we'll get you prepped. And I'm like hold on, I just came in for a cleaning, I'm not prepared to start on anything today, and can you just do the cleaning? She starts getting all emotional, 'it will be my license if we don't treat you properly,' and basically refuses to do the cleaning, raising the chair to get me to leave. And I don't get out of the chair. I tell her again, I came for a cleaning, I was scheduled for a cleaning, and I'd like a cleaning. Then she tells me she is running behind and doesn't have time to do the cleaning. WHAT??? You kept me waiting 45 mins, you (and Dr Balin I assume) have time to get a scaling and planing underway, and now you can't do a routine cleaning? I remain calm and remind her she kept me waiting 45 mins. She then goes back to talk to Dr Balin. I hear whispers, but not what was said. She comes back, total change of personality, all sweetness and light, and does the cleaning. No one follows up with me about scheduling the scaling and planing, nor do they try to schedule another routine exam and cleaning. It was all very strange. I'm finally writing this review because I just got to another dentist (recommended by a friend) who told me there is no way I need a scaling and planing, nor am I having any signs of gingivitis or early periodontal disease. I sent my xrays in advance (thankfully I got them from Rittenhouse Dentists with only 2 phone calls) He noted that my teeth and bone are in excellent condition, gums are healthy and have some recession but that is to be expected 'at my level of maturity' (61yo). He said some practices work the system so they can bill insurance for a more costly procedure that isn't needed. He shook his head and noted that experiences like mine are why people hate dentists. Between his commenst and the other reviewer's discovery of the PE ownership, my experience now makes sense. Do yourself a favor and find a dentist who cares about clients and the dental profession overall, and not just money. read more

Although quality of care wasn't the best, I've been very disappointed with the office experience, particularly on the billing side. On my first visit, I had to pay out of pocket because the office didn't have my correct insurance number. I was told that once I provided the correct information, they would submit the claim for reimbursement. However, it took two months, and only after I followed up, for the claim to be submitted. To make matters worse, the office submitted the claim on their own behalf and was paid, meaning they were paid twice for the same treatment. I still haven't been reimbursed, and I'm currently trying to resolve the issue. Overall, a very frustrating experience. read more

Very bad experience with the front desk at the Rittenhouse location. Just noticed that most of the good reviews are from years ago and the most of the more recent reviews are negative. I booked this place after a lot of research as I have a traumatic brain injury resulting in issues with my jaw/hearing etc and needed to ensure that the doctor has the right experience. I checked that the doc was covered by my insurance plan before booking and appt wait time was a month and a half. Day before my appt, I confirmed via text. The day of my appt, I got a call and confirmed I would be there again. Was asked to get there early to finish paper work. I got there 15 mins early and was rudely asked for my name- the person next to me was yelling and I couldnt be heard. I said as much and then was asked to finish the paperwork. After doing that I was told rudely that my insurance is not accepted and that the office had texted me. I checked my phone and had not received a text. I checked my insurance plan and showed the front desk again that the doctors name was listed. I was told rudely again with no apology that my insurance was not accepted and that my plan website must be wrong. No attempt was made to check again or apologize for the inconvenience. So now, I've: 1.Lost half a day of work 2. Cant use my annual check up before end of year cos its too late to get an appt with another dentist before the the end of the year 3. Front desk wasted my time by not checking my insurance prior to the appt (but a claim was made that i was texted- there was no text) 4. Front desk called me day of appt to confirm - couldve followed up on insurance then but they did not. 5. Made me finish my paperwork/registration - couldve followed up on insurance before I gave them my info but they did not. 6. And then reprimanded me for asking some basic questions about the insurance. 7. And then I had to hear the front desk women laugh amongst themselves about my appt. Even if my insurance covers this place, I wont be returning. read more

WALKED OUT - MID TEETH CLEANING Another Philly institution sold off to line the pockets of private equity. I have been a patient at RD for years and do not have dental insurance. Every other visit, I have paid for my cleaning when I arrive and then we discuss any additional services needed BEFORE we begin those treatments. Today, I was late for my appointment and not sure if I would be taken back so I didn't notice that I did not pay in advance before my cleaning began. Today, my hygienist freaked out mid cleaning that I didn't have insurance and left the room. She came back with a itemized receipt of the treatment she had already began and costs of the treatment she did not finish. The bill was $2000!! Like I said, I have been coming here for years and had no idea that we were doing anything outside of the normal treatment plan I was scheduled to receive. She mentioned treatment I would need, but again it was all stuff that I have had done at RD before and didn't realize any of it would be outside of a normal cleaning and had never been met with the bill AFTER THE FACT. I was also asked a lot of questions that I found strange since I have been a current and regular patient. I was also asked to fill out patient forms. In both cases, I asked if they had me listed as a new patient and they were defensive and said they were just keeping things updated. All of the computer screens were obviously set to a different software and all of the paperwork was different as well. When I got home, I noticed the address on my bill was for somewhere in Melville, NY - not the bala office I go to. A few google searches later confirmed that the address belongs to Dental 365 which is owned by The Jordan Company, L.P., a middle-market private equity firm. The same exact kind of company that looted and bankrupted Crozer Hospital in Chester. Cannot stress enough - half of my mouth has been cleaned, the other half is not lol immediately looking for a new dentist and you should too! read more

I HATE the dentist (as many do). I'm a big baby, have massive anxiety, and was super nervous. I managed to get an appointment quickly for a cracked tooth. Dr. Balin saw me and got me an appointment at a specialist for a root canal. For that alone I am thankful, but wait: There's more. Dr. Balin and her team were amazing. Kind, compassionate, and completely understanding of my fears. After arriving home from the emergency root canal I immediately made an appointment with Dr. Balin for a follow up visit for a crown, check up and cleaning. So, yeah. I'm going back and happy to be doing so. This dental office is the BEST. read more

tl;dr: I would advise anyone using this dentist to double check that the front desk has run test claims, and to call your insurer yourself to inquire how much you'll be expected to pay out of pocket. I have had two cleanings at Rittenhouse Dentists. The first cleaning went well and was fully covered by insurance. I later changed dental insurance and booked another cleaning. I had a very good cleaning and saw Dr. Balin during my appointment. Before my appointment, I asked the front desk to run my insurance to make sure everything would be covered. The worker at the front desk said I didn't owe anything. I later received a bill for over $300 because the office was out of network (insurance covered about half of the balance, but I was on the hook for ~$150). I will no longer be using Rittenhouse Dentists. Although asserting to be a CIGNA credentialed dental office on their web page and repeatedly by the front office, only one dentist is credentialed and she works one day per month. This I had to discover on my own after my Explanation of Benefits from CIGNA returned the first visit invoice as "out of network." read more

From what I remember, I actually liked this Dentist office when I was living in Philly. But over 3 years later, I received a call and email stating that I owed $162 from a previous appointment. I didn't receive any notices by mail, email, or phone prior to this within that 3 year time-frame. But since I received them today, clearly they have the correct contact information. They stated that I did not have dental insurance at the time of the appointment. I had insurance through my University and unfortunately, I no longer have access to that email since it's been so long. It turns out that the University also changed their medical providers since I have been a student. So, I tried calling the insurance company and my school, but was unable to get ahold of someone who could trace down my plan and benefits. If the Dental office would have reached out to contact me within a reasonable time frame of the appointment, I may have been able to resolve this through the insurance company and/or the school. I remember paying some (what I thought was all!) of the bill at my initial appointment, after giving them my insurance information. I was under the assumption that they check your insurance there. Obviously, sometimes there are errors or delays. I've received bills from Dentists a few months after the appointment, which I understand. But over 3 years without any contact doesn't seem reasonable to me. When speaking on the phone with the manager, Gianna, she told that they called, emailed, and mailed me notices since 2021 (a year after the initial appointment). I told her that I received none of these. When calling back to talk to her again, she stated that they only contact via phone and email for the final notice, not prior to that. These contradicting statements was confusing for me. Clearly, it there are systematic and organizational problems within this company. A simple phone call or email within a few months of the appointment may have helped me to resolve this without a hassle. Unless you want to get hit with a random bill several years down the road from your appointment, I'd stay away. read more

So patient, so kind, and so gentle. She explains everything before she starts, always asks if I am doing okay, and works efficiently. I couldn't be more pleased. While everyone in the office is incredibly friendly and talented, I want to say a special thank you to Bliss. From the first time I walked in the door, she's done everything she can to keep me calm, make me laugh, and let me feel comfortable in the office or in the chair. 2nd update: This place charged me up front and then billed my insurance. insurance refunded me and then told me the patient responsibility. This office overcharged me and now making excuses to not give me the money back. Stole money from me Update: just to respond to the comment posted underneath. I asked new and different questions by email and I never spoke with Dr. Balin on the phone. Basically I asked questions and raised some concerns about the recommendations and they decided they didn't want to proceed for whatever reason, just leaving my review here Went here for a cleaning. Got it done. Was told there was an issue with one of my fillings. I asked questions about it. Dr. Balin didn't respond to the specific questions and told me I should see an endodontist. Set up the appointment with the endodontist. Called this office because I had questions for Dr. Balin or just clarification about what was discussed. Received an e-mail saying that they are terminating all dental services with me and will be refusing all treatment going forward, basically banning me from the practice ??? Very confusing experience, to say the least Just went and called up other dental offices. I like to think I'm very professional, respectful, and direct. This dental office is weird. I've only been once, so I don't want to make the mistake of speaking too soon, but I was really impressed by my first appointment. The lobby is very clean and the furniture in the waiting area was comfortable. The new patient form was electronic and it made the process quick and easy. In less than 10 minutes, someone (presumably a hygienist) brought me back and we talked about my teeth. She was really very sweet and seemed sympathetic to my issue (I was and am currently in pain at times). My actual appointment was with Dr. Balin. She took a look at my x-rays and talked me through everything, giving her advice on what to do. What I most appreciated was how she took her time and explained what I was seeing in my x-rays. I believe this was my first time ever having a dentist do that, and I thought it was really thoughtful and overall made me feel like she cared. She also asked a couple times if I had questions for her. I did, and she took time answering each one. I didn't receive any treatments that day but left pleased with the consultation I received, and I will definitely be returning. I will update my review if needed, but I think I will stick to this place for now. read more

They put a crown on a tooth that they decided to not do any type of cleaning to prior to putting it on. I had told them I hadn't had a chance to brush my teeth since I was coming from work. They didn't seem to mind crowning the tooth without any cleaning.. Like what??? I went somewhere else and had it redone. The office I had it redone at did an actual cleaning / antibiotic cleaning and a Polish to the tooth that needed the crown. It's hard to hold dentist accountable thats why it's important to leave reviews when you know they aren't doing a good job and being held accountable. read more

I have been going to this dentist for years and until recently I would NEVER go back. I had an appointment however was unable to make that appointment as instructed I called to cancel and was given another appointment months later. I asked to be placed on the list if an appointment opens up sooner. I received a call 2 weeks later that a sooner appointment opened up. I took that appointment. I received a text asking to confirm a week prior I didn't reply. I got another text the day ro confirm. The text never said confirm or will cancel. I got a text morning of appointment says we look forward to seeing you at your appointment (no mention of cancellation in any of the text) I arrive at the appointment only to find out you cancelled my appointment without notice. The receptionist was seemly unbothered and rude. Another receptionist yelled at me. I almost lost it. I am an a full grown adult don't talk to me like I'm a child. I pay money to come here and have been a longtime patient. Someone should have called me to confirm my appointment. Those stupid automated text messages are pointless No one reads them most people opted out from receiving them. A simple call to confirm still works especially since they charge $100 if you don't show up for an appointment. read more

I had a crown put in Jan of this year. Dr Balin wasn't avail but Dr Abdullah (who owns the practice) was at the center city office that day and put in the crown herself. The crown came out less than 6 months later. When I went in to have the crown replaced, I was told it would cost me an additional $1,200 (then lowered to "special disct" of $750). I was shocked to be charged again but Dr Balin said it was out of her hands that the decision was 100% from Dr Abdullah. After repeated efforts to speak to Dr Abdullah, never received the courtesy of a call back. Dr Abdullah is not only a poor dentist, but equally lacking in the area of ethics. I consulted several other dentists about their normal procedure if by chance a crown fell out before 6 months and w/o question ea would replace it without charge. Dr Abdullah took no accountability for her poor dentistry, did not stand by her work and greedily insisted on charging me a 2nd time for work that was incorrectly performed the 1st time. read more

I am so impressed with Dr. Shimma Abdulla! It has been the best and just experience I've had in my life. The office is very clean, she takes time to explain everything that she's doing as she's doing it. She called me by my name the entire time m, which I don't normally care about, but it certainly made me feel like a more personalized experience instead of being streamlined through like most dentists. I had a cavity filled, and in the past, this has been a very painful procedure. Here it was completely painless! I was seen at my appointment time both times, instead of waiting around in an office and watching people going as your appointment time comes and goes. I highly recommend this dentist office! The cherry on top was having chapstick offered and applied mid procedure for my comfort. Plus enjoy the complementary coffee, mints, floss in the waiting room. read more

Had to find a dentist quickly to repair a loose retainer in my mouth. I was way over due for a dental check up and have not found a good dentist since moving to the area 3 years ago. I also get super nervous because if horrible experiences with crappy dentists in the past. A friend had suggested Rittenhouse Dentists. Atmosphere is clean, warm and welcoming. You automatically feel comfortable as soon as you enter. There's water, coffee, and mints in the waiting room...if you even have to wait! I've never been to a doctor's appointment and was seen roght on time, ever! Dr. Kansal was very friendly and knowledgeable, which made me feel so comfortable, especially as a new and last minute patient. She fixed my retainer, and I was out the door in 20 minutes. Price was honest, especially since I don't have dental insurance. Unfortunately her fix came loose again that same night, but I was able to get back in a few days later and she tried a different approach on the fix this time. I wasn't charged for the second appointment. This time everything went well! I will definitely be making an appointment for a regular check up and cleaning. Rittenhouse Dentists were recommended to me after my wonderful dentist retired. I have now been with Rittenhouse Dentists, and in particular, Dr. Kansala, for over 5 years. Dr. Kansala takes her time and is always available to answer questions or discuss treatments. Once when Dr Kansala was unavailable, I met with Dr Abdulla, who was just as kind, knowledgable, and professional as Dr. Kansala. Rittenhouse Dentists also have a terrific front office staff and technician staff. Everyone is friendly, helpful, and very, very good at their jobs. read more

I recently had my initial patient appointment with this practice and have no complaints -- in fact I recommend them highly. As a licensed dentist, and recent dental school graduate, myself, I'm always balancing this inherent skepticism and benefit of the doubt mentality when it comes to assessing other healthcare providers -- not only dental related. This practice passed both the "look test" i.e. is it clean, do they use proper barriers/infection control, are the right people doing the right jobs within the practice, and are they using updated technology in line with the standard of care, as well as the "like test" i.e. are things explained well, do they make you feel comfortable, is everyone professional and friendly from dentist to office staff, etc. In both areas they pass with full marks. My initial exam was standard -- assessment of goals, extraoral and intraoral photographs (with the dental assistant) full mouth series (X-rays with the dental assistant), cleaning and flossing (by the dentist), examination and review of X-rays (with the dentist), a thorough head and neck/oral cancer screening (by the dentist), and finally areas of improvement (with the dentist). They use digital radiographs (over the old fashion plain films) which are key diagnostic tools, ultrasonic cleaning devices as well as hand instruments for cleaning, and are on an electronic health record. All these things help keep a practice up to date as well making record keeping easier for the patient. As a benefit they accepted my insurance making my initial visit $0. You also can easily find what insurances they accept on their website which is not the case with many healthcare offices (but something I appreciate when screening where to make an appointment). As someone with a sordid history of dental cavities and other issues I anticipate likely needing more extensive dental care in the future and look forward to seeing this practice continue to impress and excel at other aspects of dental/oral care. Of note: I debated whether I should mention being a dentist as well since I didn't want it to impact the exam/appointment, but in the end I decided to mention it as a professional courtesy. The entire visit was professional, amiable with all parties, and thorough -- I don't think it would've been any different had I been anyone else. The hype is real. I came here on recommendation from my coworker after going to Yurovsky Dental for maybe a year and before that, PennDental. Very clean and professional office. Waiting room has cucumber water and Keurig coffees. Everyone is so friendly here, I was taken aback because it was just so unusual for Philadelphia. Whether it was the receptionists, doctors, or hygienists, they were all super accommodating. Even more epic was the wait time for services. I had been going to the same Dentist for over thirteen years before I moved to the city and had to look for another one. Based on Yelp reviews, I tried Rittenhouse Dentists due to its proximity to me and the stellar reviews. After having multiple appointments with them, I definitely recommend this office. They were extremely friendly and it was an efficient and easy process. After my first visit, I needed to make another and they were able to fit me in the next day. My only wish is that they had some later hours, but I can still make their current ones work! read more

I recently moved back to the Philadelphia area, and was looking for a new dentist close to my office. This office had amazing reviews, so I decided to try them out for a cleaning. While I will admit, I waited too long to get the cleaning done and it was quite painful, the nurse had no sympathy whatsoever and left me bleeding and sore for the next 3-4 days following the service. Assuming this was, as mentioned, my own fault for waiting so long, I scheduled my fillings appointment at the same practice. I thought it was so convenient how late this office stayed open so I wouldn't need to take any time off of work. Let me be clear- dental work is not something that you want to feel is rushed or unsure of. You get one set of teeth!!! Do not place them in the wrong hands!!!! First of all, they didn't even use numbing gel during the anesthesia shots. Then, the doctor working on me had to do two fillings on adjacent teeth, and the entire time was talking to his assistant about "I think I can just try to do it this way, it'll be faster and it should work". Don't try out a brand new method on a brand new patient??? ESPECIALLY if you are unsure of the efficacy. I had the work done in January, 2020- it is now March 2020, in the middle of a global pandemic. I was having temperature sensitivity on the teeth that the experimental fillings were done on, but was told it would be normal for a few weeks following the fillings. I called the office, they told me to give it another few weeks to make sure. This didn't seem right, so I went to see my tried and true childhood dentist for a second opinion, even though it was a bit of hike. Lo and behold, both of the fillings were done incorrectly. Yesterday, I had the first filling pulled and re-done, and the second filling was so bad that I HAD TO GET A ROOT CANAL only two months after a simple filling should have done the job. The doctor who treated me on Crown was nice and professional - yet felt like she's constantly in a hurry and wanted to fast track the whole process, leaving the impression of being a bit impatient (where I believe she's not) The assistant though will be the reason I don't want to go back again (besides the fact I need to go back to finish the crown setting...) The assistant constantly poked the inner side of my mouth when doing suction, and often splashed around my mouth area when pulling out. Today was my second visit to Rittenhouse Dentists and I feel like this will be my go-to dental practice for years to come. My hygienist was Elise and I cannot say enough about her gentle touch and friendly banter! Seriously, these are the qualities you look for during those 20-or-so minutes of twice-a-year cleanings. The waiting area is modern and comfortable, and they get you in and out as quickly as possible. I love that they apply lip balm so your lips remain plump and pouty. It's the little things, friends. I had an appointment scheduled for months. Today at 9 am they texted me to ask me to confirm (the appointment is still 4 days away). At 10 they texted to say the appointment would be canceled if I didn't respond by noon. I was in back to back meetings all day and didn't see these messages and they canceled my appointment and it will now take months to reschedule. Terrible customer service. Completely unacceptable to give you three hours to respond to a text and then cancel your appointment, especially without warning you in advance of this insane practice. read more

I've lived in several big cities over the past 14 years for work, including New York, Chicago, Atlanta, and San Francisco, and established relationships with dental offices in each before recently relocating back to the Philly area. I must say that Rittenhouse Dentists is by far the best practice out of them all. I had an emergency a few months back where a crown that I had done in California fell out, and left me frantically googling and calling all around the city for a practice that could see me with such short notice (day of). I called Rittenhouse's Bala Cynwyd location and they were able to squeeze me in that same day! Both ladies at the front, Rudi and Christy, are very pleasant and always helpful. My dentist, Dr. Abdulla, is amazing. She's in process of having a new crown built for me, and is always super pleasant and personable during my visits. The hygienists are great as well. The office is always very clean, which is more important than ever right now given the times we are in, and the equipment throughout is modern. They even have Netflix goggles that you can wear during your treatment, which is a very nice touch, and was offered to me today during my visit. I could go on and on about this amazing practice. I've been going here for 6 years and recommend it to everyone. Everyone is very friendly and welcoming- always needed when you know what's coming. While mostly in for check ups- they are never behind- they've even called to see if I wanted to come early and have evening hours. I've had a few services- while getting a filling I've used the googles which allow you to watch Netflix during the procedure- this made it so much more pleasant. They have even given me a paraffin hand wax. Spa water, Keurig and mints on the way out Your lucky if you spot the dentists chihuahua on the way out :) read more

I see Dr. Balin for general dentistry and I would highly recommend her to anyone who is contemplating a switch to this office. She is kind, she remembers key things about you, she offers advice (which is helpful for me as I am going to medical school). The hygienists are great as well. They are gentle when they take xray photos. Prior to coming to Rittenhouse Dentist I had an awful experience. My gums and lips would bleed from hygienists shoving the bite wings in my mouth. The front desk staff are also very accommodating with appointment scheduling. They text you when a slot opens if you need to have an appointment. They have a nice waiting area with coffee and fruit infused water. Bottom line, I love going to the dentist! Can you believe I said that?! Dr. Balin is G.O.A.T!
