A primary doc that truly cares and embraces new and traditional medicine, her office staff and kind and warm

During my time with Dr. Sharma as my doctor, she showed herself to be dismissive, unhelpful and also put my life in jeopardy. Due to her negligence, I had organ damage and later had to have three surgeries over a period of seven years. For more than two years, I was in horrible pain, had digestive issues and was often weak. Dr. Sharma was very dismissive and kept telling me that I was probably anemic despite blood tests, ultrasounds and CT scans showing otherwise. The issues worsened and accumulated to where even brisk walking caused dagger like pain in my right side. By the last visit to her office, Dr. Sharma gave me a full physical examination. My right side was jutting out, my abdomen was swollen and it hurt to even walk. I directly asked her - don't I need to see a specialist and get treatment soon? She point blank answered 'No'. She showed no concern, made no inquiries and then put her hand on my shoulder to walk me out of the exam room. She was completely apathetic and dismissive. Within days I saw two other specialists who were shocked I had never received treatment. Another doctor ordered an MRI which showed I had a large tumor less than 15cm that was crushing many of my organs. Apparently, I needed surgery years ago when I was trying to get help but was denied. Also my circulation was very compromised and I could have had a heart attack. I was told that I would need surgery within weeks. I would never recommend anyone to have Dr. Sharma as their physician if they value their life and quality medical care is their objective and concern. read more

She is very thorough and listens patiently to all of your concerns and does everything she can to assist you with your health concerns and needs. I went to see Dr. Sharma when I had strep throat. She refused to do a strep throat test on me (although it's a quick swab test), yet for some reason she still opened a prescription for antibiotics. If I didn't believe I had strep throat (a bacterial infection) and instead had a different issue (like a viral infection), then that would definitely not be the right choice because taking antibiotics without cause could build antibiotic resistance. She then told me that I should avoid eating congee because of the starchiness, which I felt like was off-topic and didn't address the issue of my painful throat. 4th floor terror, right next to Dr. Moulton Barrett in the building, I think this floor has gone to the dogs. Dr. Sharma was rude, short, and was not open to hear my concerns. As i checked in, The 5 start receptionist evangelina was wonderful. so sweet, so mart, so caring. As she always is. But this rating is for the dr, i cant give more stars. Sharma was quick with the appointment, but I had other concerns, i was rushed out and felt dumb. Ive been with this dr for about a year, I am not happy. Perhaps she was just tired as other visits even though short, were also cold. worst part is on my way out I got glares of death from Cathy and the dr, down the hall. I dont think she likes people. I advised Dr. Sharma ,at my most recent office visit in the fall, that I would be traveling to England & South Africa in November. En route to England the airline lost my baggage. When I phoned Dr Sharma' s office( at 10 am her time) to ask that she transmit my prescriptions to a pharmacy in England, I was told that she was busy. When I explained that the English knjpharmacy was 8 hrs. ahead and that I would have to leave for South Africa (where my medications are not readily available) within a few hours, I was told that Dr. Sharma would go to lunch first. Over the next few hours , the doctor did not contact me or the number of the pharmacy whose number I left for her. As a result, I had to go without my necessary daily medications for several days I would never rely on her Dr. Alma Sharma for any medical emergency and I will find a different primary care physician ASAP. eg read more

Dr. Sharma has been my PcP for a few years. Mostly annual physicals and referrals. Her warm, personable manner makes it easy to chat with her regarding my health goals. She seriously listens to my questions. She thoroughly explains my options and gives me her counsel. Most of all she empowers me to choose the best option for healing. If she doesn't have the answer she gives excellent referrals. I highly recommend her as your PcP. Dr. Sharma's medical practice is located in the 1925 remodel of Alameda Hospital (free parking lot). She is such an excellent doctor, and a very kind person. After my first visit, she made some lifestyle recommendations that I did not follow even close to 50% of the time. She repeated the advice. Dr. Sharma has been my doctor since 1994, so 24 years! She has been an extremely caring physician. As an Internist, it takes so much more knowledge of the medical field vs a doctor who specializes in a particular medical problem. In all these years I have rarely had to visit another doctor to be treated. She's always been able to provide the best possible advice for me to follow in my various medical issues. I have always felt great respect for how she handles the visits as she takes her time and talks to you as a friend might. She keeps up with all the tests that are required to keep you healthy. I had to leave Dr. Sharma because of my insurance (and out of area now) but while I was with her the experience was great. She listened, really listened and her staff was polite and efficient. I know doctors only have a certain amount of time for each patient but I never felt rushed. I put her recommendations into practice and all my tests were good. Saw Dr. Sharma for the second time and I have to admit, she is by and far one of the best physicians I've had (I've never really had a physician I cared much for to be honest). First off my appt. always begin with a kind greeting from their caring and considerate receptionist and my visits are always quick and concise, taking roughly about 15-20 minutes. One factor that may make me slightly partial - because I am Indian the fact that she is also Indian is very nice (despite the fact many doctors are Indian). The main reason it's nice is that she always recommends natural home remedies rather than pushing costly meds all the time. The other great thing about her is that she takes all the time necessary to actually LISTEN and ADDRESS ALL MY CONCERNS rather than just trying to rush me out the door to get to the next patient's $$$. I just moved to the area from the Connecticut. Dr. Sharma Alka was recommended to me and quite frankly I've been unhappy with her from the beginning. She's very arrogant and although she is the doctor and I am the patient she makes it clear that she isn't interested in any of my input. She also did not hide her judgement when I told her that I'm 19 and was recently married. Beyond that, I've been waiting on a referral from her to a psychiatrist for a couple weeks now. I have debated whether or not to write this review. Right now I feel compelled to share a story. I have been Dr. Sharma Alka's patient for two years. When I was on tour in Asia earlier this year, I fell and broke my ankle. After having X-rays taken at the ER there, it was determined I had several broken bones and required surgery within a week's time. I contacted Dr. Alka's office to try to get a referral from her for an orthopedic surgeon. To my shock and horror, she refused to take my call saying that 'she did not recall my name, did not know who I was, and that if I wanted to see her, she was in her office that afternoon'. Hellllooo, I was calling long distance from Asia!!!!! I could not believe what I was hearing on the other end of the phone. Even if she did not recall who I was, could she have taken the time to look in her records to see that I was one of her patients? Note this was an emergency situation and I only needed for her as my primary care physician to refer me to an orthopedic surgeon. She could not do this. This behavior was not only unprofessional, but UNBELIEVEABLE and UNEXCEPTABLE. I would NOT recommend this physician. read more

My review is only basing on the service I received from the receptionist, Eva Angelina. Her attitude to the matter of my call was rude, and did not take initiative in resolving my issue. Rather I wasted 5 minutes of my time holding on the phone and another 5 minutes of time explaining the situation to her which did not get resolved. She is not familiar with a number of illnesses or prescribing medication to treat them. For over 3 years she told me my problem was that I was aging...She almost killed me with her tx. She had me on a dose of medication 16x too high. I am alive - no thanks to her...She does not want you to be aware of your illness or likely treatment. You will never be able to question something if you don't know... The fact that she is only has privileges at one hospital is bothersome too...and something I was not aware of while her patient. read more

Dr. Sharma has been both my & my husband's PcP for a long time. Unfortunately, my husband has had a lot of health problems. Dr. Sharma has been extremely helpful in getting him into appointments in a timely manner, referring him to specialists when needed, and helping him with his overall health. She's been a wonderful doctor for myself as well. She is also very nice and easy to talk to. My daughter and I have been with Dr. Sharma for many years. Our family thinks she is very progressive in her thinking and care and says it like it is. When my father-in-law got sick and came to live with us, she welcomed him as a new patient and helped us through a very difficult period in our lives. My daughter is handicapped and she is so gentle with her and listens to what she has to say even though she is hard to understand. When she is not with me she always asks how she is doing. I never feel rushed and feel I can talk to her about anything. She does take time to explain what one can do naturally to remedy a problem instead of relying on drugs. HI. I have been seeing Dr. Alka Sharma since college days (1995). She is very informative and a good listener. I have a lot of reactions to generic brand medications. She process her paperwork right away for brand names. She also suggest other ways of dealing with my pain naturally since I am trying to get off the medications due to reactions to medications. I tried other doctors for about a year (Kaiser) since they have all the specialist there and don't have to fill applications for new doctors. ....they made seem it was all in my head... The allergist insisted that I had no allergies...and just gave me nasal sprays and pills that did not work at all. I was not tested for all the allergens and any food allergies. I was actually told by one Kaiser doctor to go outside of Kaiser for my allergies. I was allergic to about 15 different environmental issues and 14 food allergies. Kaiser said I did not have any allergies. My new allergist new by my paperwork before I saw her that I was allergic to gluten. I see excellent about giving you referrals and other documentations if need. Her staff have always been excellent with me. I am very thankful for Dr. Alka Sharma and my allergist. I am feeling much better...it is a process. I was told eventually my allergies will be much better and my chronic pain will be better as well. Thank you for all your wonderful service. read more

Dr. Sharma is a gem among modern doctors. She is, of course, very professional, but she is also very personal, compassionate, and empathetic. She really listens to what you have to say, and is not afraid to validate your pain, either physical or emotional. I went in about a month ago with questions about back pain. I was diagnosed with scoliosis and every time I get a physical with other doctors they check to see that it's not getting worse and check in on pain. I asked her if it's possible that scoliosis is causing my mysterious back pain and she said it never progresses (which I know isn't true because of my past doctors) and she waved it off as me just being in pain because of my weight. I am consistently losing weight so I know that the pain should be subsiding, which it's not, but she wouldn't even check. I didn't say anything against it because she made me feel even more self conscious after telling me I had bad posture (may I add I was slouching to hide my stomach after she made the comment about my weight.)
