He answered all of our questions, explained the job thoroughly - including damage we could expect to our lawn. The job was projected to take 2 to 2 1/2 days, but was done in 1 (long) day. We explained that the noise was crazy loud and asked them to come back later. They said no. We are desperately trying to sleep. We read them the city noise ordinance code and they said we were welcome to file a noise complaint, so we did. We called and filed. Shocking that even after a polite phone call asking them to stop, reminding them it was against the law, they still wouldn't stop or come back later- or take the wood outside the residential zone to chip out where the noise levels are higher. That was incredibly rude and we will never be using this business for service. BE better neighbors, guys. We were cool to you and you were rude to us- our entire neighborhood was subjected to your rudeness and that's not going to be great for your business. You live here too.

I called Roots Arbor Care intending to have them remove that one tree and do the rest myself. I called them for an estimate and Anna came out the following day. She answered my questions, discussed the possibilities for various options, and sent me a quote the following day. Very nice and professional lady. The overall quote was quite reasonable and included a discount for having all the work done. So much so, that I decided to have all the trees in question removed and several stumps ground as well. It was a good decision. As Anna had said, they scheduled the work for a couple of months hence, then gave me a precise date when the time arrived. It was a rainy, cold morning so I thought they would cancel but the crew showed up right on time and did all the tree work in one day. The crew was very polite and helpful, worked hard, did an outstanding job, and left the site very clean. They even chipped up a few extra big branches that I had laying around from wind damage. I should also add that my wife generally doesn't like working with contractors because they often treat her pejoratively (dismissive, mansplaining, etc.). However, she thought that Nate and his crew were very professional and respectful, and would not hesitate to work with them again. The stump grinder showed up a couple days later and also did great work. Great people, good, hefty equipment and an overall solid job at a fair price. Highly recommended.

In our first meeting with Jonathan, we learned more about the species, growth characteristics and proper care of our trees and shrubs than we received from the so-called landscape experts at the nurseries. And the charge? Nothing - but armed with the knowledge, most agree to contract with Above Ground to perform the recommended work. Above Ground doesn't do damaging things like "top" trees or shape them into lollypops. When they make cuts, they are done for a specific purpose and they know how to do it in a manner whereby the tree can heal itself. More importantly, they don't scale trees with spikes which - hello - can open wounds in the bark and expose it to insects, water and disease. Instead, they use a rigging system which is safer for both tree and human. In addition, they don't simply drop the limbs and/or the entire tree, an approach that tends to leave deep gouges in the ground or damages surrounding plants. Branches are tied off and gently lowered to the ground; trees are cut in sections and similarly lowered. The jobsite is left remarkably clean. Tarps are placed under the tree base, logs and branches to catch the sawdust from the chainsaws. Any leaves or small branches that fall from pruning are raked up and removed. To maintain good neighbor-relations, Jonathan proactively approached our neighbors to let them know about the work he and his team were going to do and asked whether he could briefly access their driveway to haul off debris. When a neighbor compliments the work of something as intrusive as tree removal (trucks, loud chainsaws, etc.), you know you've found a great vendor! Jonathan readily admits that tree removal is not his favorite thing. Yet selective removal enables remaining trees to thrive. And weak, dead trees must be addressed to ensure safety. What really piques his interest is plant health care - creating a plan to foster strong growth and homeowner enjoyment. Interestingly, given their expertise and superior care, Above Ground is not any more expensive than lesser tree care outfits. Of course, you can always find someone cheaper. But we tend view trees like a bit like humans. If you do too, wouldn't you want a board certified doctor to diagnose and perform your surgery?

But after careful reflection, I feel obligated to make a public service announcement concerning my interaction with this company on March 23, 2026. This company was hired by a nearby church to cut trees off a shared fence that divides our properties. I was not informed that they were coming. Otherwise, I would have done everything I could to accommodate them while they were working, and I most certainly would have made sure my dogs were put up, and not bothering anyone. I went to town for an hour or two at most. I left my two Australian shepherds in a 5-foot, fenced enclosure that shares this fence. My dogs are not aggressive, but that they reactive. They do bark a lot. While I was gone, my neighbors witnessed two of their workers kicking at my dogs through the chainlink fence, swearing, and spitting on them. When confronted, they swore at and threatened my neighbors, trying to draw them into an altercation. I called the police to file a complaint. After an investigation, the owner took no responsibility for the way his workers treated my property and my dogs. The workers lied, and claimed they never spit on the animals--and the owner backed them up. My neighbors witnessed it firsthand, and my husband had to wash the spit off them. From everything in the police report, the workers have not been fired or reprimanded in any capacity. To the business owner--did you know that my neighbors' children were all outside in their yard, playing? They are all under six years old and were likely exposed to the reprehensible behavior of your employees. As far as I'm concerned, you owe more than one person in this neighborhood a sincere apology. I understand that you are a Christian--or at the very least a churchgoer. (Believe me, I don't confuse those two things as being mutually exclusive). But is this how you choose to represent Christ through your business? You think it's acceptable for your workers to bully animals? To damage property? To threaten people and cross the street to start a fight? My fence is now damaged to the point that my backyard poultry can get out onto the adjacent property. I've never once had an issue with my chickens getting out until your workers repeatedly kicked the fence. You didn't even have the fortitude or decency to contact me to apologize. Just sent a weak, "tell her I'm sorry" through the officer who handled the situation. No apologies to my neighbors either, who were also treated poorly. Sir, you are absolutely in the wrong. And I believe people deserve to know that if they hire your company, this is the risk they are taking: damage to their property, unprofessional behavior, and possible harm to their pets. You should be ashamed of yourself.
