The food is alright, the prices can't be beat, and until today, the service had always been good. Today, I called in an order, headed to the café, and paid for it when I arrived. The cashier told me my name would be called when the order was ready. Since my order had been called about 10 minutes before I got there, I didn't think much of it when it wasn't ready right away, so I went and sat down. Ten minutes passed, then twenty, and my order still hadn't been called. Keep in mind, I was sitting very close to the counter, so I could hear every name being called out. Food kept coming out constantly, so I knew they were busy. Then I noticed that a group who walked in after me and ordered at the counter had already received their food. At that point, 25 minutes had passed since I arrived, and all I had ordered was a side of fries. I finally went back to the same cashier who took my payment and asked if she could check on my order. She asked, "Is your name so-and-so?" I said yes. She then turned around and grabbed my order from behind the counter, where it had apparently been sitting for more than 15 minutes -- I saw when they placed it there. Since my name wasn't called, i did not realize that was my order. I told her my name had never been called. She just shrugged her shoulders as if to say, "I don't know," and walked away. No apology, no acknowledgment that they made a mistake, nothing. Never again! read more

I use to come to here a lot a few years back but today was a bit disappointing. I came in for some breakfast. As I was in line an older white gentleman cut me in line and as I tried to get his/and the lady taking orders attention to let them know I was next they both ignored me. After she took his order , I still went ahead and ordered and informed her I was trying to get her attention, but she just stared at me. I honestly should have just left but I just blew it off. After receiving my order and opening it my hash browns were cold, looked as if they had been sitting for a while and they were unseasoned. No pepper flakes, salt or anything. My bacon was burnt in the middle and the food lacked flavor. I will not be returning. Side note: I did appreciate how kind the lady was that gave me my to-go order. She was a younger lady with locs. Absolutely amazing no complaints. The breakfast sandwich has perfect proportions with two eggs. The ladies upfront claimed that they had the best cinnamon roll in town not sure if that award was handed out but it's definitely deserved. I love this place.. the Caribbean jerk chicken salad is really good.. everything is good here. I always get a gigantic cookie to take home. My only complaint is they are not very friendly. I have experienced this almost every time I go. No one smiles. Oh my word!! I just found out about this Cafe a couple of weeks ago and now I eat there almost every day I'm in the office working. They have such a good variety of items to choose from & everything I've had has been fresh & delicious. So far I've had the chicken fried steak, which does not have heavy breading & has great flavor it came with mashed potatoes & fresh green beans. Caesar salad = amazing. They make the dressing in house and it's fantastic. I've had their meatloaf daily special which comes with a delicious red sauce on top with mashed potatoes and corn. Tomato soup & creamy spinach and mushroom soup. Both delicious. You can tell they make it all house. Their side pasta salad is delicious also. Lots of goodies in it. The only thing I've had that didn't really knock my socks off has been the chicken salad sandwich. Lacked flavor for me but my coworkers like it. The only thing I know they don't make in house (besides their desserts) is the potato salad. And their desserts are delicious as they come from La Baguette. The employees are always friendly. Shartel Cafe is open for both breakfast and lunch & either is a great time to visit. Today we picked the lunch hour and chose wisely. They have a solid menu, not too extensive, plus daily specials. We chose the Italian chicken focaccia sandwich, a Veggie Veggie wrap with carrot soup, and the Caribbean jerk chicken salad. We topped it off by splitting a carrot cake between us. The Italian chicken focaccia got high marks for its quality, bread, & flavor. Filled with grilled chicken, cheese, Lettuce, & tomatoes. Served with a side of very tasty fries, we would definitely order it again. The Veggie Veggie wrap was filled with a tasty mixture of hummus, tomatoes, cucumbers, and leafy vegetables. She also had a bowl of the carrot soup, surprisingly good. The Caribbean jerk chicken salad had a homemade citrus dressing with candied pecans, pineapple, and of course caribbean jerked chicken on a bed of leafy greens. From previous experience I highly recommend their chicken fried steak. Open from 6:30 am to 2:00 pm Monday through Saturday it's hard to go wrong at Shartel Cafe. We enjoy this neighborhood cafe for breakfast or lunch. Sandwich and salad selection is great for the healthy eater. Ready baked goods range from cookies two cakes to cinnamon rolls. Warm dishes like the daily quiche and breakfast quesadilla make a hearty meal. THE PANCAKES ARE DELICIOUS thick and fluffy (with peanut butter ). I love the coffee bar: $1.75 gets you a mug and four coffee options (including snickerdoodle). This place is usually busy, but a few tables are outside for patio seating. They are puppy friendly on the patio! Wait time is usually 10 to 15 minutes for your meal. We've enjoyed this local spot many times before, but the five star review today results from our experience with the owners. There was some confusion while ordering with caused our final ticket to be short a much desired pancake. Owner "D" was more than gracious enough to fill our order and provide a complimentary baked good to show her appreciation of our loyalty as customers. I love Shartel Cafe. First, they use Java Dave's coffee beans. They even sell the beans. They are smooth and flavorful beans. They also have a large selection of flavors for lattes and cream sodas.
