The new space is cool, I guess, but let's get real: B&N is no longer a bookstore, strictly speaking. It makes most of its money on its cafe, and when it obtained this much larger space it didn't expand the book and magazine selections. It expended the toy, puzzle, board game, LP record, stationary, and other sections. It's practically a leisure-time general store now. The LP selection isn't half-bad, but I suspect it's all digital-to-analog crap. At least they still sell books and magazines, though even there it's changed. Surprise, surprise, the religion section (focused on evangelical Christianity) is huge. Looking for a book on the historical Jesus? You'll find the most popular, unscholarly examples here--likely at least one by a local author! On the other hand, if you're looking for a book by well-regarded California author TC Boyle, you'll currently find a single volume of one of his least-regarded novels ("East is East") on the shelves. A decade ago they'd have had 10 of his books to choose from. Still a pretty good spot to kill a couple of hours, except when they're having storybook readings to kids in the cafe on Saturday mornings. It gets LOUD.

I sought refuge at the Mt. Shasta Library, needing entertaining indoor activities for my twin…read moretoddlers and elementary-age kid during rainy winter vacation days. It was so wonderful that we came back the next rainy day. The librarians were so friendly and generous. They have dozens of puzzles for infants through older kids (with no missing pieces!) and a large area mat for building them; Tinker Toys; Legos; board games like chess, Monopoly and Scrabble; crayons and paper; and a large children's book section. For out-of-towners, they have sections of honor" books which you can borrow without a card. And they have some books/magazines for sale and some for free as well (the local bookstore appeared to be closed down when we were here, so this is a helpful option). If you and your family need an indoor escape, come here!

An original town in Shasta County…read more This historic park houses the remains of Shasta City, once alive and bustling during the Gold Rush days, and now a ghost town with restored stagecoach, barn and courthouse. Due to Covid-19 the museum is temporarily closed but we stopped and walked among the Southside Ruins, strolling and stopping to read the markers and interpretive signs at the brick ruins, imagining for a moment what it was like in 1849. The authentic brick buildings have crumbled and are the decayed remnants of a once thriving gold rush shopping district. Across the street is an open picnic grounds with lots of picnic benches under shady trees. The park hours sign read: open from Sunrise to Sunset. The temperatures here reached over 100° F this past weekend and is probably like this every summer so take extra water. We did not see the cemetery. We hope to return again someday to explore and learn more. Easy access. The park is six miles west of downtown Redding and Highway 299 passes through the town's Main Street. Review #1910

I've called countless times over the months and have been unable to reach anyone. They drop you from classes without reason, and the admissions office staff always have horrible attitudes. I'd love to talk about my experience as a student here, but they are so disorganized and unhelpful that I'm not able to attend this college.

I took like 100 units (most for fun) there pre-transfer, met many awesome teachers, worked 5 different campus part-time jobs, was in a summer production at one point, and served as ASB president in the mid-90s. For being in Redding, which was then ---much more than now--the awful middle of nowhere for a restless teenager, Shasta College offers a lot a good, dirt-cheap ways to be productive and prepare for a better future, and have fun while doing it. If teachers made a point of putting together reader packets (like they do at 4-year institutions) instead of relying on expensive textbooks (some of which are the ones they wrote themselves...ugh), I'd grant an extra star.
