I attended their men's and women's league championship games last night, both wins against Northern New Mexico. The men's game was just fine. However, the behavior during and after the women's game were horrible. One player appeared to be trying to pick a fight continuously during the game. I sat at midcourt as I like to see everything and I had no vested interest in the outcome. A mother of a Simpson player sat a few rows behind me and she was loud and continued to verbally accost the officials and opposing team. A Cal Maritime staff member had to go and talk with her for some time. After the staff left, the woman calmed down for a bit but she soon escalated her verbal assaults, even encouraging players to assault their opponents and the officials. I got up and moved to another part of the gym but one of the officials stopped the game and ejected her. I'm sure her daughter was proud. After the game, even though Simpson won, I saw this woman and a number of other Simpson parents yelling at the officials as they left the building under police escort. The coach never made any effort to control his players or fans. Such a poor exhibition of Christianity. If this is what Simpson condones, I highly recommend that people stay away. Also, I saw similar behavior by Simpsonites at a game against William Jessup University a few years ago. read more

Great place to attend. Dynamic staff and faculty. I love this place! Redding is beautiful and a delightful city.

If I could give 0 stars I would. First off, this school does not support their sports program, even though these kids represent them and pay a lot of money to attend. There is no such thing as a full scholarship here, maybe they will cover 30%. Most importantly, this school will cover up and hide any illegal activities with their staff instead of handling the situation and showing their students and families that they care. One of their male coaches was there for only 2 years. He was a coach of girls. After his first year, girls made a complaint to the Athletic Director of unwanted remarks, sexual harassment and uncomfortable situations. Athletic Director was "let go" couple months after the compliant was made and the school and informed the coach of the complaints. The next year, Coach made sure to let his players know of the accusations made about him. Well, after his 2nd year, more girls complained to the school. Still nothing was done except that they allowed the Coach to transfer to a new school. Now he is doing this to other girls in a different state cause this school is full of cowards! read more

Oct2024: On our Son's 3rd year at SU, Redding, CA...some observations: The SU students in general are a cut above. Staff friendly. Professors generally satisfactory to good and a few in the jaw-dropping outstanding category. Only one "lemon" experienced. Academic and athletic scholarships available. Dorms ok. First year students are crowded with 4 in a room with a bathroom. After the Freshman year, less crowded or off campus options are available. Nursing school is good. Kinesiology needs more resources than it currently has. School is putting resources into football. Cafeteria and coffee shop decent. Study areas available and pretty good. Be nice to have a tennis court and a tennis team, but only a few miles away is Sun Oaks, tennis, swimming, weights, etc etc with a good deal for SU students of about $300/school year. Indoor tennis courts extra cost. Counseling Dept....there are good ones, but those our son has had, are either inexperienced or unmotivated to go the extra mile to learn their jobs and support the students in courses planning, finding "internships", jobs, etc. SU is not a big school, but an overall good undergrad school. Unlike UCDavis or UCBerkeley where the reputation is good, but the undergrad courses have been too large, at least for the non-specialized courses, to get to know (or even talk to) the professors, and the UCDavis counselling dept was disappointing. SU is a Christian school. Unlike Master's University, it accepted Christian and non-Christian students. If one needs to only be with those declaring themselves born again, then the Master's, a bit north of LA would be the choice. Overall, SU is a good school. With areas of strength (Nursing, Athletics) and areas needing more resources (kinesiology). Maybe others but we did not have experience with everything SU offers. RH read more

We had such a disappointing experience there today. We went to my sisters graduation this morning, we had tickets and walked through the dumping rain, they turned us away at the door, stating they were at capacity. I know not only is it expensive to attend this school my sister worked really hard to get her masters degree, and we looked forward to watching her graduate. In my opinion for the event to be planned this poorly is an absolute reflection of the university itself and 10/10 will not recommend this school to anyone. read more

Everything about my experience trying to join Simpson has been terrible. I applied over four months ago for Spring 2024 semester, which starts in a few days. Only two weeks ago was I given my "credit evaluation" which is super brief and doesn't explain which classes transferred over. The admission counselors also are unable to answer any of your questions- except that I would have to retake stats for credit.. because my stats class didn't count. Also I have heard nothing regarding my financial aid. Once again the semester is supposed to start in days and I can't find any information anywhere. It is so hard to get in touch with anyone, as calls, texts, and emails lead nowhere. I am really upset- as I was really excited to join Simpson, finish my bachelors degree, and then pursue my Masters. I was also told that the reason I haven't gotten bank my financial aid award yet is because I need to secure my tuition deposit... by paying $200? Again, I am very upset and disappointed. read more

I have had multiple interactions with this school and they have all been breathtakingly unprofessional. I will narrow down my comments to reflect their admissions department. To preface this review, I will say that Simpson is on probation with the credentialing board, as they are not getting the amount of students that they need to stay credentialed. Just keep that in the back of your mind, that if you start going here, they may not be credentialed when it comes time for you to graduate. I had intentions of applying to their nursing program. I was first put in contact with Molly (in admissions). She quickly put me off to Kristina Bambino. I am not a 20 year old with a handful of credits. I am a 36 year old, military veteran that has attended 6 colleges and I have well over 100 credits. I was dragged along for 2 months, with Kristina making me think that I would be able to apply to the nursing program. She encouraged me to sign up for Bible classes that I would need before I could be accepted. After using $2000 (from my GI Bill) for said Bible classes, she then called me giggling, and told me their was a "big fat bummer" and that my overall GPA wasn't quite high enough. She "advised" that I should retake elective classes that I took 20 years ago, and see if I could get a better grade in them, and that "maybe you should try Shasta College instead". This school is hiring their students and placing them in counselor/advising roles when I don't think they are mature enough or qualified for them. They say they are veteran friendly but they are not, but they are Bethel friendly! There are many Bethel parishioners that work there and attend their school. I will never be applying here or trying to attend this school again, and I would encourage others to seek other scholastic options. read more

I transferred here a year ago after attending a UC and I found Simpson to be a great fit for me. The small class sizes and dedicated professors contribute to the success and enjoyment I get from my classes. The small community and student engagement here on campus also made it a lot easier to build connections and relationships. Although there are some issues within various departments, I've noticed the school is moving in the right direction. With the addition of Sarah Jobson, Asst. Dean of Students and Dr. Hall's diligent efforts to improve the school's functionality, students are being heard and Simpson is being refined. For those who are interested in getting a college education and building on their relationship with Christ, Simpson is a great place to attend. read more

While she was very polite, about half of not more of our questions she was not able to answer and continued to remind of that she was just standing in for Andrew. It would have been much better if he had just rescheduled. - Then there was the tour. Whoever is in charge of the volunteers may seriously considering choosing cheerleaders. Again very nice and one of them was somewhat humorous. But if anything Hannah less excited after the tour. They showed us around but not really exploring the whole school, asking us at least three or more times, this is this, "do you want go there"? - Then in regards to $50 payment I'm requesting be refunded. Hannah attempted to make it through Andrew "3" times! Then, through someone Andrew referred her to without success. Then, she told to just come in and make the payment in person, but she finally called and waited on hold for someone that seemed to take it with a problem. -After that she received an email instructing her call and set up appointments to register for classes. Someone reached out who was she the only person who seemed to be knowledgeable, but when Hannah called back to speak with her, she was told that individual no longer worked there and she had been assigned to someone else. -Then they sent out emails asking Hannah to make an appointment with a financial aid person and someone else (at this point she cannot remember who or what department) but when the individuals called her for the meetings lasted all of what seemed to be 2-3 minutes, they were unprepared to answer her questions, put her on hold, and transferred her around, resolving nothing, and could Never get zoom to work, so they ended up being phone calls. As an alum ( what I call a 'SanFranSimpsonIte ) having attended when the school was located in San Francisco in a gorgeous, if not bulging at the seams campus, my experience was one of support, superb instruction, and interesting courses taught by engaging staff ( from TA's to full Professors.) Clearly, over 30 years ago, the world was a less challenging and less expensive place. I have fond memories of spending time with friends discussing ideas presented in classes. I had no problem with getting classes I needed or worrying whether or not the credits would be transferable in the event of transferring to a school which focused more on the major I was interested in pursuing. I am dismayed that folks are using YELP to complain about things that might be solvable if brought to the attention of one of the Administrators. Using this platform to complain with no interest in solving a problem really is not something that my classmates would likely engage in years ago. It is sad. read more

The university has had its ups and downs for the past near-100 years since its birth, but as Christian colleges/universities go, I feel it's an exceptional place to get your education and/or to be employed. The community is wonderful. God's peace and presence are experienced. And the professors are outstanding. I met my husband at Simpson in San Francisco, and all three of my kids went to SU in Redding. As a parent of a freshman student I am not at all pleased with Simpson! For the cost to attend this private school one would think there would be a significant amount of administrators an faculty to ensure a freshman is taking the correct classes they need for their major. This is not the case. After so much confusion trying to get into the school and to get funding straightened out, to have her class schedule totally wrong! Thinking all was finally fixed we get ready to move her to Simpson... Oh wait another phone call 2 weeks before she is to move in.... Class schedule is all wrong an no declared major! What?! There was never a question for her as to her major but apparently at Simpson there was. With much ado her advisor who has no clue as to what she is doing, tells us now it's all fixed an things are ok.. I kept saying are you sure? I talked to her an I didn't feel like things were ok.. But my daughter was assured it was fine! So off I moved her to Redding. Now here comes November an time to sign up for classes!!! Guess what my daughter took the wrong classes in the wrong semester an now they are unavailable for spring semester! Surprise!!! Now what? So many dollars in student loans an 3 months later ends my daughters college career at Simpson. How sad! How ridiculous! What a waste of money ! What a waste of emotions! What a waste of time! What a waste!!!! So I suggest anyone who is planning on attending Simpson university beware; of counselors, advisers, ,administrators who Are guiding you on your class selection, they do not know what they are doing! When I talked to the head of the advisors he didn't even know the person who helped my daughter ruin her class schedule! That's scary he is her boss!? They tried to have the head of the counseling department meet with my daughter to discuss the problem, my daughter shows up for the appointment an the lady had already left! That was so nice of her. This is a 40,000.00$ dollar a year school, really? My daughter left a note an she still has never responded to her!! Not such a good review for Simpson university! I was a part of the MFT program. I went to school to learn to be a professional counselor. This program should have lifted me up and given me hope....instead I felt used up and spit out. The people in charge seriously let power go to their heads and treat the students like dirt. I have heard one too many stories about people leaving this program in tears. If you want to attend a really good MFT program, I would NOT suggest Simpson University. The price is high and the education is only mediocre. The ASPIRE program is another story. That was a bachelor program and less demanding than the Masters MFT program. The cohorts were great and the teachers much more involved. read more

I just graduated from Simpson University this past semester and it's a little bittersweet. Yes, I'm finally done but I do miss this community very much. I started at Simpson in the fall of 2013 and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Business in the spring of 2016. When I started here at Simpson, the administration were going through some changes. During my time here at there were a lot of change in the staff here. I definitely miss the old staff but the new staff that has stepped in has brought a lot of positive change to Simpson. Of course, you'll have a slow start with a lot of new staff members but again, the change is good. In reality, if you are looking for a college experience, you need to put in what you want out of it. This goes for any college whether if it's private or a state school. With that being said, if you choose to go to Simpson, pour into it. I can honestly say I poured into it. You can always be involved with anything on campus. Be intentional, that's all. If you are an outdoors person, Redding is for you. There are a ton of things to do in Redding. We have 2 very large lakes, a mountain, and million different locations for you to hike and find waterfalls. As I parted ways with Simpson, saying goodbye to the professors was one of the hardest part. These professors take the time to know you and they want you to succeed. Example: I started out my senior year with my car breaking down twice and my laptop went out so of course I was struggling financially. When I told my professor I couldn't afford the books (3 of them for one class) he went out of his way and bought the books right in front of me off amazon. Again, the professors pour into you. Lastly, this school has a wonderful community who strives to be intentional with the community of Redding. The Simpson community has amazing students that I can truly say these will be my friends for the rest of my life. read more

It's not that I have a problem with Christian Education, if you want an education at a faith-based institution, go anywhere else besides here. Currently the school is under academic probation which means that if the administration does not get their act together soon, the university will become unaccredited by the WSCUC, the board that oversees the accreditation of state/private universities. I studied here for three years and was going to be the Senior Class President before I transferred as I grew more and more concerned about the accreditation status of the university and the exorbitant financial drain the institution places on its students. Roughly, you will need about 24,000 dollars to afford absolutely mediocre food, dorms that are rundown and dirty, and an education that completely lacks any serious rigor. Getting a degree here is as hard as earning a high school GED. On top of its lack of rigor as an institution, this university is barely recognized anywhere. No one you tell will know where or what Simpson University is. Go to any other Christian University; William Jessup, Biola, Saint Mary's, Multnomah, absolutely anywhere else. I say this because the university frequently hires professors to teach classes they are not qualified to teach. One such example would be when a certain physics teacher was hired who not only had never taught the class, but did not posses a degree in physics either. She changed the syllabus a total of seven times in the course of one semester and would frequently break down and cry in the middle of class. The newest addition to the physics lecture faculty, after the previous person quit never to return, held a lab where in which students would "test how the spiritual laws of God defeat the physical laws of nature by speaking life over a plant as opposed to speaking death over it." Professors jump ship left and right at Simpson. You will be better off financially and emotionally if you do not waste your time here. read more

I am currently a student at this school. Overall, it is falling apart. I would advise anyone interested in this school as an incoming Freshman or Transfer student to stay away. You will have a better experience somewhere else and save money. I would not be surprised if the school died in the next couple of years. The nursing school is the only program that is solid and keeping the school afloat. If you are a nursing student, this place may be okay for you. I am a Liberal Studies major (the schools elementary education major) and it is a terrible program. I have had some amazing professors at this school, but I am most definitely not prepared to teach or move on to a credential program. STAY AWAY IF YOU CAN! This school lies and tries to get as much money out of you because they are financially unstable. They care more about money than being a Christ centered school and doing the right thing. The President also has no respect for the professors. The politics take away from the learning experience. read more

It breaks my heart to read some of the reviews. That was not my experience. Realistically there were challenges and miscommunication, however, where is there not when dealing with humans? I am grateful for my admissions councilor, she was extremely encouraging and helpful as well as accurately guiding me for my degree. The university was generous with scholarships for my academics and the staff was incredibly kind and helpful. My classes were challenging but that was to be expected. The care of instructors and chapels were phenomenal. The biggest challenge I overcame was the disappointing attitudes of a few students who were not ready for some of the classes and having my personal belongings stolen out of a class. read more
