I bought a car from Shaver Chevrolet. They told me I had to pay a mandatory $400 Lojack fee because that was required on all their cars. Then, they came to me with four lug nuts and said it was their requirement to put a security lugs on that cost $40 and charged me $400 and refused to take off the security lugs and put mine back on. This dealership is a scam and I intend on protesting outside their dealership. They hide or exclude these documents from piles of paperwork and then tell you that you ordered it. They are liars. They cannot mandatorily charge these fees. It is a crime to say and do so. read more

Sister-in-law just bought a car one owner car from Shaver that came from Florida. It's infested with Palmetto Roaches native to Florida. Denied any type of help with the situation and she was told "how do we know it didn't come from you". She has drove the car from the dealership to her driveway. Exterminator is coming tomorrow. We will be filing a small claim asking for court costs, cost of exterminator and damages. Buyer beware. Between dishonesty, poor vehicle condition and a discrepancy in between listing to vehicle, I have a less than savory taste leftover for this dealership and hope to give insight to any potential customers. I ultimately did not purchase a vehicle here. I was in the market for a new-to-me vehicle and narrowed it down to two vehicle types with specific options and searched those out, to a T. I am up by the IL/WI border and therefore I was not crazy about the distance, but salesman Kurt Nimnicht assured me this car was a 10/10, worth the drive, and I'd be happy. Upon viewing the vehicle's more in-depth photos on the dealership's website, the description read as follows : "THIS CAR CAME TO THE LOT IN PERFECT CONDITION SO OUR AC DELCO TECHNICIANS DID NOT HAVE TO DO MUCH. " The vehicle looked great in the photos so I made the two hour, 105-mile trek in early evening rush hour traffic to go look at this vehicle. I was not greeted by a 10/10 vehicle, or even a 6/10 vehicle. The vehicle had deep marring well into the clear coat on every panel like it'd been washed with a garden rake and more concerning, a half-doillar sized rust bubble on the passenger quarter. When I voiced my displeasure of the condition of the vehicle, Kurt asked me "It's a 10 year old vehicle, do you expect perfection?" Yes.. yes I do, because you assured me this vehicle was a 10/10, a perfect vehicle.. and a 10/10 doesn't have these issues. Despite this, I ultimately decided to follow through on a test drive of aforementioned vehicle. The moment we pulled out of the lot , I accelerated heavily on Broadway. Through the entirety of first gear, we experienced surging and upon entry into second gear, banged into second. If you know GM, you'll know this is max adaptive shift and the transmission isn't long for this world. I at this point told the salesman I was very unhappy that I drove this far for a slipping transmission and rotting metal. He IMMEDIATELY tried to write off the surging feeling under moderate acceleration as a byproduct of the variable valve timing system. "The surging you feel is the VVT, have you ever driven one of these?" Yes.. yes I have, and I've worked on them for a living. Do you take all of your customers or potential clients as fools? I have worked as a technician and fully understand what VVT is, and that's not it. I wasn't going to argue, because there's no winning with someone who can't even tell you how it works. When we got back, I thanked him for the opportunity and walked to my vehicle and tried to go on my way. Before I even pulled out of the lot, I was approached and offered the vehicle with $500 off the price and they would waive the first month of payments so I could "have the vehicle brought up to my expectations" - no thanks. If you want a reliable used vehicle, this isn't the place to shop. It's the storybook perfect hole in the wall car dealer full of rolling rip-offs. read more

He lowballed the appraisal and was very unknowledgeable. He gave an appraisal/quote, yet did not know the name of the vehicle he was appraising. His demeanor was condescending and unprofessional. Steer clear of this place! They sell junk cars and bogus service contracts. Only owned the car for 6 months and put roughly 6000 miles on it when the transmission said goodbye while in Indianapolis. The pain, time and personal cost that I had to go through to get this car repaired and back on the road should not be experienced by anyone. Shaver told me that "I had the best service contract that they offer and should have no problem with repairs." Not only did it not cover the cost of repairs, it was a never-ending battle with the service contract company to get reimbursement on what they would cover. I purchased a 2002 Chrysler Limited Convertible. The car was listed on Cars.com. 1 owner with 44,000 miles. Described as near perfect cond. Paid top buck plus for this excuse for a car! Front end damage, rocker panels on both sides rusted through, Damage to the rear of car as well, tear in top and a front seat that had extreme wear. Were they nice to deal with? Of course! They were peddling a loser car at top dollar prices. I'm still in shock that a dealer of any kind could sell a car like this! I bought a Ford Edge from Shaver Motors April 3rd 2015 and it was the best experience I've had at a dealership to date! My salesman was Kurt and he was friendly and made the process smooth. I live in Evanston and drove all the way to Merrillville because they had the best price offered when I compared various other places using cars.com, Autotrader.com and U.S. News Rankings. Kurt and I had a conversation about my expectations concerning trade in value, monthly payments and interest rate. I filled out the credit application and went for a test drive when we (Kurt and I) returned I had an offer! Not only did I have an offer but they offered more for my trade in than Carmax was willing to give and my interest rate is now lower than it was with the loan I had on my trade in making my monthly payments lower! I would highly recommend Shaver Motors as they were a great choice for me. With that being said I had a trade in and did my homework and knew what rate I would be willing to accept based on my negative equity and had improved my credit from horrible to decent. You should know your financial and credit liabilities before you begin a car search so you are aware of what is a fair deal for your situation. I knew what to expect and shopped around before making my final decision. Shaver Motors in my opinion is a reputable straight forward dealership that offered the best interest and price. Not to mention Kurt was attentive and felt genuine. It's unfortunate that some other reviewers had a negative experience but I can say that Shaver offers a Carfax report on all vehicles and have tons of pictures of their vehicles also, so visually and to a certain degree repair wise you have an idea of what you are getting. Purchasing a car is a big investment do your research and know what to expect. Use Kelly Blue Book and NADA guides and be willing to travel a distance for a better price. Originally I was so pleased with their service that after we bought my fiancee's 2008 Dodge Caravan that I bought myself a 2010 Ford Explorer. This turned out to be the biggest mistake of my life and has put my family in danger. Below is our experience with both vehicles. I urge anyone with similar issues to message me a detailed statement because I will be looking in to taking legal action. 2008 Dodge Caravan- 1 year and 8,000 after purchase Brought back on 3 separate occasions for issues with the powersteering. Each time they claimed to have fixed the problem but it still malfunctions. After the last time we refused to bring it back. The powersteering went out on a wet curvy road and the van went into the oncoming lane with my children in the car. Had there of been traffic in the other lane I may have lost my family that night. Dvd system did not work even though we were told it did. Radio malfunctions and oddly enough if you plug your phone in to charge it makes the radio go to static. Check engine light keeps coming on Oil pan is leaking and is apparently being secured with a "temporary drain plug". Radiator and hoses was just replaced. 2010 Ford Explorer- 1 year and 3000 miles after purchase. RPM dash light is burnt out. Driver side window on occasion won't roll down. On occasion the sun roof leaks. Underneath truck is completely covered in spray paint to hide rust damage. Front axel seals are bad. Rear differential is water logged and completely shot. After our experience with the Carvan. I absolutely refused to bring my Explorer back to Shaver and I'm so happy I made that choice. Upon inspection the rear differential was completely shot. He said he was amazed to find the differential was completely filled with water. This is next to impossible unless it was submerged in water. I have only had the car for a year and only put 3000 miles on it. I live in Crown Point. There has not been any floods. So I did some research and pulled up my Explorers information on MYCARFAX. My Explorer came from Marquette Michigan. Which it literally right on the lake and a few blocks from a pier. I'm willing to bet any money the previous owner probably went to back his boat in to the water and submerged the differential causing the damage. Shaver claims all vehicles are inspected prior to being sold. Granted I didn't expect them to fully disassemble the differential for inspection but a simple check of the differential fluid would have been a clear indication that there was a problem. I spoke with Mr. Shaver he was very understanding in me wanting a separate location to inspect my vehicle and was willing to pay $1500 of the $2000 worth of damages in which I was much obliged for. However after a week of waiting for an adjuster to come out my claim was denied and I'm being stuck with the bill. The warranty company is claiming my damage is not coverered. I am now responsible for damages that I could not have possibly done to my vehicle. read more

We brought it back and they fixed. 4 months later the same part went bad and they wont fix it saying its not under warranty funny how the first time they fixed it the service people told me its under warranty you only have to pay x amount of dollars for deductible they could pull the phone calls on that now all of a sudden no warranty. Everyone there treats me like family when I come in. They are very kind and courteous. They always ask what can they do for you. One thing I admire is they usually meet you at the car just to greet you. They aren't like other dealerships where the salesperson tries to shove just any car down your throat and you aren't happy with it. They always take their time and if you don't have financing of your own they will work with you no matter your budget. They are the best in my eyes. That's why they have repeat service from me. I bought a Volvo, a navigator fully loaded, a bmw 745Li, a Mercedes r500, and my newest edition a expedition limited. All cars were fully loaded and below Kelly Blue Book value. They will continue to have my business. But the greates part of all about them is they always try to stay in contact with you to see how you are enjoying your car. I went to a reputable Cadillac dealership on 30 and they never did a follow up to even see if the car was a good fit. Shaver also has their own shop and are more than happy to get you in within a timely manner. I would recommend them to anyone and I will definitely be a continuous return customer. Do not Buy a Car From Shaver. Their Warranties are Garbage. We recently bought a 2012 Toyota Rav 4 from them the evap canister went bad. They replaced it and 5 months later it went bad again. I called in and said what are you going to do to fix this. What I got was completely a garbage answer. Well sir your extended warranty doesn't cover this part.Then they went on to say its a defective part from Toyota. I said maybe but I bought the car from you. They fixed this problem twice already. Once before I bought the car. Once when we bought it. Now all of a sudden the warranty doesn't cover it. I recently purchased a vehicle from Shaver Motor and at the time of the test drive I commented to the salesmen that the front brakes felt like they were rubbing and was told it was brake dust because the car was sitting. I also had to take the car to the Hyundai dealership myself to take care of the recalls even though Shaver does bring there vehicles to Hyundai on a regular basis and asks them not to do the inspection that is done on most vehicles. The tires on my 2013 Sonata are Dry Rot and a definite without a doubt safety issue if not violation. I will never refer anyone nor will I step foot into that dealership again. The upside is I have only had the car for a week and if they are not willing to resolve the problems I will return the car and take my business to a reputable dealer who does care about there customers and their safety read more
