He does not give anyone false expectations on how he thinks the case will go. One of the great things about him is that he is not an attorney who is going to run up the bill. He tries his hardest to ensure that by the end of a case the parties are still able to work with each other and that you don't walk away with an astronomical attorney bill. I used this firm when I filed for divorce a couple years ago. Luckily it was uncontested, so there was no real problem with time or paperwork. Carl Schluter handled my case, and he was super nice and got straight to the point. Currently using them for another case now, and as usual, they are professional and pretty fair with pricing. While they do charge by the hour, they basically estimate how much of their time they will have to spend on the case you bring to them, and estimate $250 per hour based on their estimate. They will allow you to pay partially up front if you need to, but obviously, they will require the remainder of the funds to complete the services. They handle other cases as well - like traffic, medical, and so on. Only downside, their office isn't the cleanest, and sometimes the front desk people are a little..... interesting. read more

And although my wife and I were able to reconcile our issues-his office still stayed in contact with me to ensure that I had what advisement I needed. My attorney was Carl Schulter, by far the most professional attorney I have ever met. His paralegal Gabriela was also very helpful she sent me email and kept me informed on my filed documents with the Columbia courthouse. I found that there prices were very reasonable. And since a divorce is never cheap this can be another consideration when choosing an attorney. This is a long overdue review. I used Shawn P. Hammond and Associates earlier this year, more specifically, Carl Schluter was the attorney the office appointed me. Without airing too much dirty laundry, I was going to court for a child custody matter. I do not live in Augusta. I live in New York. Therefore, I was put in a position where I needed to hire an attorney from afar. After doing some research, I came to the decision that I should be good with this firm. So, I paid the retainer, and had a conversation regarding my case. First off, I was not all that impressed with Carl while having a conversation over the phone. His go-to line during our discussions was, "all we have to do is make the judge mad at her". Okay. Well that seemed a bit elementary. After all, you did go to law school and you've been practicing law for quite a while. I pointed this out to my wife, and she advised me not to take it too seriously. Because we were on a schedule, and because we had already made a payment, we decided to stick with the firm. Between the hiring of Shawn P. Hammond and the court date, I put together copious notes, supporting emails, texts, photos, etc. to help Carl during the proceedings. Everything was in order and laid out for him. It should have been one of the easiest custody cases he had ever handled. Fast forward to the day before the scheduled court date, we went to the law office for the first time. After waiting a few minutes, Carl came down and walked right past my wife and I. He was called down to meet us specifically. We were then directed to follow him to a conference room. This was the telltale sign that things were not going to go well. He walked right past us and even began talking to us without ever introducing himself. Minor details? Hardly. This is a very significant event in my family's life. Every detail is important. Either way, we sat with him and went over details of what would be discussed the following day. Mind you, he had acted as if he never looked at any of the supporting documents we had provided to him weeks ahead of this meeting. So we went through them again, and he made notes. The following morning we showed up at the courthouse and proceeded with the hearing. I cannot make this up, but when it was Carl's turn to speak on my behalf, he couldn't string two sentences together, and if he did, neither sentence made sense, and even me, as the father and the one that provided all of the details to him, couldn't figure out what it was that he was trying to say. I was terrified! I had just spent thousands of dollars on retaining someone that couldn't speak to the judge, let alone argue a case at all. At this point, the only thing I could do was say something myself. I asked Carl to ask the judge if I could say something, and he didn't! When I felt that the judge was about to get up and leave, I spoke up and asked if I were allowed to say something. She replied, yes. But you should check with your counsel. I looked at Carl and then looked back at the judge and shared what was on my mind. Luckily, the judge seemed to appreciate my effort and willingness to stand-up for my family. Luckily, I was brave enough to do it in the first place. I can't imagine the outcome if someone had been sitting there, incapable of speaking publicly. And my bigger concern is that someone could really put their family in financial danger spending this kind of money on a firm that is incapable of doing what you pay them to do. In the end, my ex-wife's and her attorney dropped the case. I can only credit the work my wife and I put into it, along with me speaking up during the hearing. So please, do yourself a favor and go with another firm. Either that or be prepared to argue your own case. By the way, Carl S. is the first person that left a review for his firm on Yelp.
