We stopped in after a long hike, looking for flip flops and souvenirs on our way to The Alchemist. While wandering upstairs (following a sign for "tee shirts & sweatshirts"), we were abruptly yelled at by an older man with white hair and glasses, accusing us of ignoring an "employees only" sign and, oddly, implying we might be stealing. A simple, polite redirection that the upstairs wasn't open to customers would have sufficed. Instead, the tone was sharp, public, and unnecessarily rude. We apologized and explained we hadn't seen the sign, but he reacted as though we were being dishonest, then proceeded to complain about us to another employee while we were still within earshot--all very awkward and unprofessional. I would strongly encourage the owners to reconsider how customers are approached, as it reflects poorly on an otherwise generic but pleasant shop. Perhaps looking like you've just enjoyed Vermont's outdoors isn't quite the right aesthetic to be treated kindly here. Thankfully, the hike--and The Alchemist--more than made up for it. That said, I wouldn't return to this store to purchase an Advil. read more

I could cuddle up in the corner of Shaw's General Store. Good vibes from top to bottom. It was so well organized and chock full of fun merchandise ranging from comfortable shoes and sunscreen to small gifts and outdoor gear and clothing. I found several items I wanted to purchase. It's located on the main street in downtown stowe and is one of the oldest general stores in Vermont and I would guess in the United states based on the location. You can't miss a pit stop here if you are in downtown Stowe. They are conveniently located a few doors down from a fabulous bookstore as well. Kudos to the folks running this store and making it such a fun place to shop and explore. read more

When visiting a quaint town, one must avail themselves to the local country store ! Shaw's General Store hit that requirement. Such a fun place with all kinds of things to look at (and buy). From foods to toys to home goods or clothes, and much much more. Some Yelpers complained of this store being overpriced, but come on, that is to be expected. We're in a tourist town with lots of wonderful things to do here. This store provides memories... memories of things we might've experienced, or maybe wanted to experience, so yeah, maybe you'll pay a bit more to bring the memory back home with you. Isn't that worth the extra money? I think so. I loved this place and bought stuffed animals for my grandchildren, and I bought myself 2 pieces of hand-painted wood, one of which was a beautiful outdoor scene of Vermont, which states, "Just Breathe... Vermont," and the other piece of painted wood states "Dogs are my favorite people." I think that sums up who I am just fine, and further, no matter what I paid for them, I smile each time I look at them and think back to my memories of traveling through my favorite of our United States... This place was recommended as a historical general store, but it's really just a touristy gift shop. The atmosphere is nice and the staff were very friendly--that was the best part. Most of the items felt generic and overpriced. I was hoping for more local or unique products, but nothing stood out. This store is great. I stopped by recently for some Vermont-branded gear after my first ever foliage visit in Vermont. One of the local stores in the area cautioned me going here because they felt that were too expensive. As a New Yorker where breathing outside literally costs $100 min, I took my chances, and glad I did. The store is very homely upon first entry and it was beyond packed for a Saturday. I purchased a Champs-branded sweatshirt that was on the pricier side, but much cheaper than the ones I've bought at other stores that carry the same brand. I wanted to purchase two, but, they were out of my size. I decided to check online, and was pleased to see that they had the sweatshirt available there, so, I made the purchase through the Shop app when I got back to my hotel. After some time, I realized that I didn't receive any notifications about an update for my order and emailed the store. They sent over the tracking information and the package was set to arrive via USPS that Saturday. USPS is a hit or miss and has been more of a miss for me over the last several years. Saturday came and went, and I didn't receive an email stating the package was delivered as I normally do, and kind of forgot about it though I was home all day. Sunday, I checked the tracking and saw that it had been delivered and left on the front porch. Only issue - I live in an apartment building without a front porch. I checked my mailbox hoping it would be there, and nothing. I emailed the store and let them know and they confirmed on their end that the package was delivered. That Monday, I connected with our usual mailman who said that he was out that Saturday and whoever delivered the package likely left it in the lobby of the building. Beyond frustrated, I filed a claim with USPS as we have had a string of thefts in our building over the last year from packages left in the lobby. Our building is a hotspot for local teens to skip school, and packages have increasingly come up MIA as a result. I shared this with the floor manager at Shaw, Andrew, who I had been emailing. After some back and forth, Andrew was kind enough to send me replacements at no charge via UPS. I received my order recently, and just beyond satisfied with the service of this store! Very uncommon these days. Anywho, I highly recommend a visit if you are in the area, and can't wait to visit again next year! Appreciate Andrew and the entire team for making it right! read more

Have visited here several times when I am in town and they always have some good options. They have clothes, souviners, and toys which change based on the season so they frequently have different items. Price I feel is a little bit high but it is in a more touristy spot so I understand. read more

Cute if (super) overpriced store. Unfortunately I have to give them one star because my family and I were treated poorly. We were the only people of color in the store. Someone came out of nowhere in a packed store to beeline to "straighten" things near me and my family. Then she went out of her way to magically appear everywhere we were in a packed store. To the point that my husband asked her if there was a reason she was following us. She pathetically claimed of course not, the kids were just cute. I Purchased a sled in the store on a cold winter day. We went sledding and it broke during the first ride. It was made from a low quality plastic, probably not designed for -5° temperature. I immediately brought it back and the manager abruptly refused to issue credit First he said that we probably ran over a rock which was impossible on a 25 inches of snow on the hill and then he simply said no - all sales are final and we're not taking it back - poorest customer service I ever experienced in Vermont. read more

This retro style upscale general store is located in the heart of Stowe's quaint New England village. We were originally going to drive through this town, but decided to stop, specifically for this store as I had spotted the sale rack outdoors! Prices are a little steep, but there are some bargains. I got a really cute Stowe t-shirt on clearance for $10, which isn't TOO bad. They have a really great assortment of anything from onesies to apparel for the whole family. I liked the hat selection too! They do of course sell maple related souvenirs like cookies, syrup and candies. Always a popular souvenir to pick up for yourself or someone back home. Other items for sale included jewelry, decorative pillows, wall decor, mugs, backpacks and more. Nice selection of shoes, but you will pay a pretty penny! A lot of them are perfect for the activities of this area though. They sell Keen hiking boots, sneakers and sandals. I am a huge fan of this brand! This is one of those stores where you think you're going to drop in for a few minutes just to look around but then you end up walking out with a good buy or a unique find. I first visited the store several years ago during autumn and picked up some really cute Xmas decor. More recently I stopped in during a ski trip and got a new winter coat, snow pants, two hats and two pairs of boots as the store had winter items on sale for end of season. Very nice service in the shoe section and attractive, reasonable prices. Totally recommend as a must stop when in the area. read more

If that's not reason enough to pay homage to this store then let me tell you this, Shaw's is much fancier than my hometown general store. Of course they have the tourist faves like maple candy, cheese and syrups but they also have high end clothing, Vermont made art, and as you can tell by the shoe pictures, a wide variety of everything you need to hike New England. I wouldn't call it a "general store" as it's much more of a boutique of sorts. I'm sure it used to be back in the day before they invented 18 different kinds of fleece lined boots. I walked into Shaw's General Store today not expecting to start my day off angry. I asked the salespeople at the front if they had any ponchos for sale. The woman's response was where the ponchos always are, in the front! I'm sorry, was I supposed to know that it was at the front of the store behind a black pole? I guess it's common knowledge. If that's not enough, I overheard the salesman in the front of the store making fun of the way my son was dressed. I'm sorry but my son has some disabilities, and if putting on a dragon ball Z jacket, and a fortnight hat makes him happy, than so be it. I told him that he really shouldn't critique the way people dress, it's rude. It took ever ounce of energy out of me not to go full papa bear on the jerk. I will never step foot in the store again.
