This is their bakery. They have some good looking cakes here.

This is another one of those places where I don't really understand all the negative reviews. I think this place is pretty nice. They have a great product selection, good deals, and a nicer bathroom then the store I usually go to.

Rotten meat- this is NOT "oxidation".

Owen approached us after noticing our confused and puzzled looks while in the chicken section. We wanted to buy a whole chicken (in retrospect a huge undertaking for two novices). We literally had no idea what we were looking at/for. We would pick up a package, try and gather as much information as we could from reading the label, and put it back down. We did this a few times before Owen came to our rescue. Not only did Owen share with us his impressive knowledge of the best whole chicken to purchase, he even offered to spatchcock the chicken for us (a free service I had no idea Whole Foods did for already packaged non in-store products). It was not a surprise that Owen did an amazing job with our chicken and packaged it immaculately. He even included the chicken scraps and bones, wrapped separately. Owen left a huge impression on us and we look forward to seeing his cheerful demeanor and helpful attitude every time we visit this Whole Foods location. He is also polite and a great conversationalist! Time and time again, Owen goes above and beyond what he is expected to do. Keep up the excellent attitude and work ethic, Owen! The last time I visited the butchers, I heard from Owen that he is planning to go back to school and cut down to part time work. I sincerely hope the best for him and in all his future endeavors! Besides our great experience at the butchers, this Whole Foods location is solid. It can get pretty busy sometimes on the weekends and in the middle of the day during the weekdays, but it's clean and decently big in here so I don't mind the crowding as much. We constantly purchase our produce from here and they are young, fresh and last a while in our fridge. There are no floral staff members to wrap flowers you purchase here though (I've never seen anyone behind the flower counter). They also do not have any Whole Foods brand fresh bread or a bread slicing machine here. They do carry bread packaged from other brands here though. The Whole Foods cafe (for the brown butter cookie lattes) seems to be closed indefinitely.

The chicken is 3.99 a lb (or $4.49 lb for marinated varieties) and it's comparable to the quality of what I would buy at Whole Foods for double the cost. I also like their beef tenderloin -$18.99/lb. The store also offers a variety of take home dinners and sides, which is especially good if you are only cooking for 2, or live alone. I like the turkey dinner for $5.99. It comes with turkey, stuffing, gravy, and a little bit of whipped potatoes and butternut squash. Perfect for a winter Monday night after a long day of work. No cooking; just reheat. Other important details: plenty of parking and staff to assist you. The staff packages your purchases in nice sturdy bags that don't break and I'm never in the store for more than 10 minutes. In and out quick; works for me! I gave them 4 stars because the store is small and doesn't carry the variety of meats that the Danvers Butchery does. Yesterday there was a sign on the door that said FREE BEAN DIP! I hate bean dip, but the sign caught my eye. The sign said if you write a "positive review" on Yelp, they will give you a free bean dip. The sign said you have to print your review and bring it into the store and show them what you wrote. If they like it, they will give you the free product. Yelp specifically states that customers shouldn't be bribed with free goods or services and the reviews should be authentic. The Epicurean Shoppe is good - the store is always busy- and shouldn't have to stoop to those measures. I want to see them do well, but I was really turned off by the sign. Be aware that if you see an influx of super positive ads from February 2014 that the ads were generated by a bribe.

It also has a produce section, deli, and an excellent bakery. The doughnuts they make are big and tasty but don't have that "heavy" sweet taste. One problem with Big Y is of course the high prices. They don't compete well with Market Basket, ranking up there with Shaws and Stop & Shop instead. Second, though they do carry many items, I've found a number of products I like to buy are missing. For example, they only carry Barber/Tyson frozen stuffed chicken, omitting anything from Koch Foods or Milford Valley. And the store doesn't have quite as much variety as it first appears as they stock the same items in multiple locations in the store in some cases. I don't see the point of this. Finally, they have the gall to charge $0.10/bag. This really makes me angry--I see no reason to nickel-and-dime customers as Big Y does. All in all, there are other supermarkets that are adequate and don't rip you off by charging for bags.
