I don't understand all the complaints about Shaws. It's the largest supermarket you'll find in Northern Vermont. If you are visiting, it's a convenient place to stock up on essentials as it's located right off the interstate in Waterbury. There's a pharmacy within the store as well. I'm writing this -for now- as a visitor to the great Waterbury for eight days, and we came here more often than we went to any other supermarket or shops during our stay and enjoyed shopping here every time. I have to mention the deli first: there's a lady who works here and we saw on every visit, and she was incredibly helpful and generous. The hot and sweet corn salad she recommended was a night, and the cauliflower tabuleh was surprisingly enjoyable. Then there's the incredible rotisserie chicken which is unbelievably tender and keeps incredibly well - easily the best supermarket-bought rotisserie chicken I've ever had. Their aisles are clean and prices competitive, and it was easy to find what we needed because aisles were clearly marked. Even at different times of day there was no excessive wait at checkouts either, and we'd be happy to shop here again in the future! read more

If you know VT, you may be surprised to find that a big-time grocery conglomerate like Shaws is even "allowed" here. I know it's the second smallest state by population (did you know there are almost 4 times as many people in Orlando metro than all of the Green Mountain state?), but kind of to 'prove' my point, try guessing how many CVS, Walgreens and Costcos there are in the entire state? That'd be 10, 5, and 1. In their largest city (Burlington), they have a grand total of ONE each of the two major drug store chains... You can see, I'm sure, to set a world record for "The most useless/unrelated factoids in a Yelp review" - I'm proposing there should be a Yelpie for that! Now, where was I? Oh yes - the question was "what's a 'major' like Shaw's doing in VT?" Turns out, even though they are now owned by Albertson's, Shaw's has deep New England roots. Along with Hannaford, they... Alright, enough with the trivia already. The store itself is what is of interest here. Well, it's almost like any old grocery store here in the Orlando area, just with higher prices, with produce, especially - sort of mid-way between a Publix regular price and Whole Foods or Fresh Market is a good comparison, except it's a Winn Dixie. Of course, that may be due to the fact that it's quite far from where the fresh stuff is grown, but still! I suffer a bit from sticker shock every time I shopped there. Bread was close to being as expensive as the "Udi" kind my wife favors. The one time I needed after-sun lotion, I was tempted to risk pain and melanoma than part with my precious dollars at those prices. This time around I got some of their 'gourmet' coffee - at $12.50 a lb - which turned out to be 'meh'. Thankfully, Vermonters are friendly and eager to help, which eases the pain some. They do offer great variety, including wine and everything from seafood to prepared foods. You COULD find deals if you looked hard enough: cod at $9 a pound is not too bad perhaps, till you realize the cod is likely caught in its "backyard" to the east! One thing I've noticed is that Vermonters are more environmentally conscious - you are more likely to get, or be offered, paper grocery bags if you didn't bring your own. I also noticed that cheese and ice cream are by and large cheaper. For the former, an 8-oz. brick (when you buy 5 of the cheese along with a basket of other items in their mix-and-match deal) of delicious Vermont cheddar (different varieties) was a crazy $1.79! The ironic thing about ice cream was that, while all the OTHER brands were easily a dollar or two cheaper, regular price, compared to what you can find here in Orlando, Ben & Jerry's, made down the road from where I skied, was EXACTLY the same price. It's not a bad supermarket. I went in here several times and overall was happy with selection and service. I also think that it is nice that they are open late for such a relatively low population dense area. They have a good selection of beer and wine. read more

Not finding prices or service favorable here. Unfortunately it is our only real supermarket close by. I cashed out with item and my cashier spoke not one word. This after trying to shop around stockers who feel they need to push you out of their way. Sad!!! read more

Shaw's has become very frustrating to shop in. The aisles are always filled with pallets being stocked, the service desk people keep you waiting when you are standing at the counter, and I can't always find what I'm looking for. A new response is if it's not on the shelf we probably don't have it. Other supermarkets seem to go out of their way a lot more for the customers. When I shop at Publix in Florida it's a different experience. I can't do enough for the customer. read more

This shaws has made all the proper moves during Covid 19 to set the store up for customers. They just added self checkout and all employees wear masks. I feel very comfortable going shopping there. I typically go mid week early in the day and it's empty . read more

A few days ago, I visited the Shaw's Waterbury, VT. My family and I were finishing up a long road trip and wanted to grab groceries. We found this Shaw's in our area and decided to pay a visit. Unfortunately, I was treated with a high level disrespect and bitterness from a disgruntled cashier. I simply asked if my credit card was approved and she returned my question with an inappropriate attitude. With English being my second language, I often find it difficult to talk to people because of my accent and this woman made it clear that I wasn't a welcomed nor valued customer. I'm very dissatisfied with my experience and I will not be returning. read more

I shop at this store almost daily and often come away unhappy. One thing that bothers me is their constant restocking which results in carts, boxes and people in the way all the time and in front of the very place you want to look. It is also my experience that if you have a list of ten items at least two will no be on the shelves which makes you wonder about the constant restocking. I wish that Hannsford or Price Chopper were close enough to give some competition because if you go to Shaws in Berlin or Williston you find a different store with less of the things that bother read more

The past few times I have shopped there, I have caught the cashiers making mistakes on my checkout. One charged me twice for 1 items, another rang in the wrong unit price. Not deliberate, but the young kids just don't pay attention. One kid was busy talking about his date the night before while he was ringing my order. I asked him if he rang in something twice and he says no, without even checking. read more

This is the worst supermarket at which I have ever shopped. I write this review as a Waterbury resident, who has shopped here for the past 4 years. I have seen Shaw's change for the worse and their current store director and management couldn't care less about customer service or the quality of the items that they sell. Shaw's produce is horrible, as most it for sale is well past its shelf-life. For example, while examining blackberries for sale, 4 containers I looked through contained white, fuzzy mold growing on the berries. Most of the other berries including the strawberries for sale were mushy and almost inedible. Shaw's doesn't care, though; they put everything out for sale anyway. Thanks for the collective middle-finger, Shaw's. As a customer, I greatly appreciate it! Their meat department is horrible, and turnover of employees there has been remarkable. Several times, I have purchased meat that was rotten, despite the "sell by" date being many days away. Many a dinner was ruined and I had to go back to the store for a refund. The customer service desk rarely apologized. I'm sorry I bothered them with my troubles. Finally, why have more than 10 checkout lanes when you only keep 2 or 3 open at a time? Oh yeah, that customer service thing --it's lacking! Shaw's even got rid of their self-checkout lanes to be --get this, and try not to laugh-- customer service oriented! What a joke! You all know nothing of customer service. What a shame that this is the major supermarket chain that is here in Waterbury. If you read the reviews here on Yelp, you'd see that none of the reviews were left by anyone from Waterbury. No local in their right mind likes Shaw's --they're just stuck with them.
