I've been looking for a new salon and stumbled upon Shear Love. I was looking to have a balayage done, similar to one I had years ago. I booked an appointment online for a full balayage/ long hair and was quoted a price. My stylist, Carly, reached out to request a photo of my hair so that she was prepared and moved up my appointment an hour earlier to ensure we had enough time. I also provided a photo of the look I had done previously so she'd know exactly what I was looking for. When I arrived, I was greeted by Carly and she was super friendly. The salon looks like a house on the outside but the inside was transformed. The interior is super cute. It's well kept, bright and stylish. The other stylists were so friendly and welcoming. Before the magic began, Carly advised me that my service would actually end up being around $150 more than I was quoted due to the length of hair I have and the product needed. This was definitely disappointing. I expected a variance but not something so drastic, as I booked the service for long hair to begin with. I opted for the partial balayage and it was still more than quoted and over my anticipated budget. That was the only disappointment I had. Other than that, Carly was very professional and she did beautiful work. My hair was the exact shade I was looking for. It was very natural looking. Carly provided information on when to have my look touched up and sent me home with samples of their amazing smelling shampoo and conditioner. Overall, I was very pleased with the outcome. I had my hair done by Deanna for my sister's wedding, and I was so thrilled with how it came out! I have curly hair and have found few stylists who know how to work with my hair, especially for a formal style. Deanna not only knew what she was doing, she took the time to get to know my preferences and make sure I was happy. She completely exceeded my expectations; I even liked it better than the hairstyle I had for my own wedding. I got so many compliments on my hair throughout the evening! I'm new to the area and was about six months overdue for a haircut. I pass by this place pretty often so I checked out the yelp and Facebook reviews and decided to book online. I booked a haircut and eyebrow waxing with Lexie and then called to verify the cost of services. As another reviewer mentioned, prices are more than listed. The haircut listed for $30 on the website was actually $35 but the eyebrow waxing was still $20. The salon itself is very cute and it was fairly empty when I got there. Lexie was finishing another client so I did have to wait a few minutes and they offered me a beverage. Overall I'm very happy with my haircut and eyebrow waxing but I was offered a $25 deep conditioning treatment, and they recommended all the products that they were using in my hair. So they mentioned products are buy two, get one free and showed me a $30 shampoo and $30 conditioner. They also mentioned several times that they do bookings in advance so they are clearly trying to get people to add on services and buy products and book appointments while they're there. Overall I'm very happy with my haircut but the pushing of services and products made me feel like I was getting a sales pitch. Also after blow drying my hair, she curled it and neither asked me nor mentioned that it would be an additional cost so when I went to pay, I was surprised to hear it was $65. I said that I was never informed there was an extra cost for curling my hair, especially because I did not ask for it so they took it off. I made another appointment but I don't think I will return. read more

This has nothing to do with the Salon it's self however with the rude owners. I was a guest sitting at a table next to the owners of this salon and their friends having dinner at The Carriage House. Their server was also our server and she was a very sweet girl. At the end of the night the owner of the salon got up with his check and went over to the bartender, he then went and from what I could see, threw the check onto the bar and said "I'm not paying the bill" or "I'm not paying for these Tito cranberry" in the rudest, most angry way possible. The bartender was also sweet and expressed she'd take his name and phone number for the owner and let the owner know and he could be the one who decides if he will be reimbursed or not. The owner of the salon continued to yell about how ridiculous the prices were and the bartender explained that everything is expensive in the world right now unfortunately but still gave the option to take his name and phone number. The salon owner then went on to say he OWNS A BUSINESS ALL WHILE YELLING AT THIS SWEET BARTENDER WHO WAS GIVING HIM OPTIONS. If you own a business, do not yell at other employees and especially don't yell you have a business either if you don't want a bad rep. He then said he was going to pay the bill but the rest of the money is coming out of the waitresses tip. We heard the waitress say that the salon owner SHORTED the bill AND didn't leave a tip. Great business owner, imagine someone came into your business and did that? I knew I had to write a review after I went to the restaurants yelp and saw the business owners wife write a review and leave out the critical parts about how her husband yelled, refused to pay the bill, then shorted the bill and didn't tip the waitress. I suggest if you want to go to a place owned by someone classy, these people at this salon are not it! read more

I cannot recommend this salon. The prices differ than advertised and they refuse to honor the prices that are on the website. Additionally, it is hard to get in touch with the management/owner when there is a problem. It seems that this shop is run in a unilateral fashion and the customers come second. read more

I really can't say enough great things about this salon! I have been coming here since they opened, and continue to come here even after my move to Stamford CT. Kathy, who is my stylist, really takes her time with you, listens to what you are looking for, and is spot on every time. I'm ALWAYS happy with the end result! I have also seen some of the other stylists before weddings, and they are all wonderful as well! Kathy and all of the stylists there are so passionate about what they do and they really care about their clients and it shows! It's always a nice little break/getaway when I make a trip to this salon :) I also wanted to note that during a time of uncertainty (thanks COVID) I had no doubt in my mind that when NY allowed salons to re-open that Shear Love was going to feel safe and clean! The salon always felt that way before, but during this time the staff really has gone above and beyond to really help clients feel even safer given the current pandemic. The staff is so conscientious of space, temperatures are checked, masks are worn and required, there are hand-sanitizers throughout, and chairs/work stations are constantly being cleaned. I felt so safe and well taken care of while I was here! If you are looking for a salon where the staff is passionate about what they do, are patient, and really listen to what you are looking for- I recommend you give Shear Love a try! Before she washed my hair she spoke to me about my options and wanted to understand my hair challenges. Then the magic began. My favorite hair stylist Tina started her own business with a previous co-worker, now partner, Kathy and they have made magic! I'll follow her anywhere, but this cute little renovated house with their chic decor and gracious staff just stepped up my experience for sure. The ladies work so well together, and the atmosphere is upbeat and excited. There is always something new to see or hear about when I go. It's relaxing and comfortable and a great place to get away for some treating yourself! Long review: I will put this out there to warn others. I took my teenage daughter to get a balayage and brought photos. I expressed what we did not want which was striped highlights from the roots. A balayage is like a melt of color that starts midway down. I left her there and the stylist, Molly, decided to change course and do baby lights instead. So when I came to pick my daughter up I was shocked to see a very different style of highlights than we discussed. So I start touching my daughters hair to further inspect the color. Kathy Goodall, the owner, rudely told me I had no right to touch my own daughters hair while her stylist was "still working"...she was curling it at that point no less! Why can't I touch it to inspect the job I'm paying for? I calmly told Molly I am not happy with it and Molly said "go home and sit with it for a few days." Well for $295+tip I was not thrilled with that plan. Let's talk pricing as well. $295 for "baby lights"? No full head, no base color, no balayage, no haircut! I was quoted $280 for the balayage then it's $295 for baby lights? The owner confirmed my daughter did NOT get a full head of highlights yet I was still charged $295? Molly did a root rub to "fix" the striped highlights from my daughters part. Still not at all the color job we asked for but I left with it and was even nice about it. Tried to be positive because there are far worse things to be upset about. But then just TWO washes later the color totally changes and is now a brassy, yellow gold color. I requested Molly make this right and she said it's "out of my hands" So I call the owner Kathy, and boy was she defensive and argumentative. I expected the call to be her telling me to come in so she can take a look. Nope! She condescendingly tells me to "get it off your chest" and as I'm explaining, she loudly interrupts me and talks over me then accuses me of doing that. Totally unprofessional. I explained the color looks awful after just two washes and her response? "You're not using the right shampoo" AND "Your water has CHLORINE in it and that's not in my control" I said how would you know that and she said "I know this areas water". Kathy, we have a WELL with untreated water and I have a wonderful shampoo for color treated hair. After not getting a promised phone call back, I messaged the owner and Molly to please call me back to peacefully come to a resolution. Nothing. I never leave negative reviews, but this just left me appalled. Side note: I returned to Shear Love after another off experience that I let go. Kathy cut my daughters hair back in September and I nicely said it was less than an inch off($65) can you please cut a little more? Boy did her attitude shift, rolled her eyes became curt and then dry cut my daughters hair another 2". It left a bad taste in my mouth so I never planned on requesting her again for services. In the end, I am sure there are plenty of happy customers but watch out if you are unhappy with a service. And watch out for being overcharged. But mostly save yourself the headache in case you are ever unhappy with a service. So unsettling. Now I am out over $300 with an awful color job and the worst experience I've ever had with a business owner! read more

I stopped going here, which is a shame because I really loved it. I always made appointments with whoever was available, great service was guaranteed regardless of who I saw. I'm not sure if the absence of the owner has negatively impacted the salon; when I first started going she was always there. My last few appointments Kathy wasn't around, and it wasn't busy like it used to be. They don't even have a receptionist anymore, even on weekends. The stylists have to answer the phones, greet every customer, and ring up their clients. This last time, the radio was playing unedited music full of profanity. While most of the stylists sang along, Amelia apologized to her client and directed one of the women to change the station. From what I've seen, she is the most professional person there. Sarah did my last cut, apparently prices went up because a trim cost more than the times I had gotten a full-on new style (also by Sarah). I have now found another salon to go to. I've been going to Shear Love Salon since they opened. Kathy, the owner is absolutely wonderful and all the staff are just as great! I always feel welcomed whenever I walk through the door. My stylist is Genta and I could not be more happy with the way she does my hair. My highlights/balayage always comes out perfect. I recently ventured there during COVID and they have safe procedures put in place to ensure customer safety! Yesterday I went to Shear Love for my first appointment. Kathy was WONDERFUL! She took her time to fully understand my needs and what I wanted. I had multiple services....base color, full highlights, toner, and awesome hair cut. I received Kathy's full attention and felt pampered by her assistant, Renee. Renee was professional with washing my hair and then gave a relaxing massage. Alex was also very friendly and helpful. Kathy, Tina, and their staff are amazing! They are hospitable, patient, and so current. They continually go to classes, even though Kathy and Tina teach young hairstylists themselves. Everyone who visits gets a consultation before a haircut. Kathy and Tina actually listen to you, what you see for your hair and your lifestyle. They make intelligent suggestions that fit your life, not treatments and extra stuff just to hit up your wallet (like some other places). The best endorsement I can make is that when I get my hair colored and cut -- no joke -- it lasts 12 weeks at least! Even though my roots show at the 12 week mark, they blend in so well that only I notice. My husband doesn't even notice. Sometimes he forgets that I even color my hair since it looks so natural! Kathy builds in variegated color that works for you, low lights or highlights. She knows what she is doing. (I once got my hair colored at another salon and the back of my head burned and itched. It was terrible. This will never happen at Shear Love.) Also, my cut is SO versatile. During the 12 weeks, as my hair is growing out again, I can play with variations on my hair. Kathy is the only stylist that I have known to cut my curly hair this well. In my 40 + years, I have visited at least ten to fifteen stylists in the Hudson Valley. Kathy is really the best, hands down. Tina has not cut my hair, only because Kathy is always available, but every cut and color I see that Tina does is exceptional, too. Everyone leaves happy -- men and children too. (If for some odd reason, you were not happy, they would fix it with no issues and probably at no cost!) You can not miss going to this salon. The prices are competitive and reasonable, especially considering how long you can go in between. Patient, polite, professional (NEVER any trash talking at this salon!): do not go anywhere else. My daughter and I don't! We travel 45 minutes to get to Shear Love. Oh -- and bang trims are free when you are a client! Love it all around! read more
