One of the biggest fields for city dwellers and tourists alike. This field offers great open spaces and some trees for shade. Depending on where you settle down, you are always in for a treat. Lovely park and quite large in general. You can spend hours in there walking, playing, viewing, biking, running, or even photographing. There will be policed on horse or by foot that patrols the area at times and it's pretty convenient with the yellow line at walking distance and some bus stops too. 4 and 6 train is available too but much further down, but still walkable. Still some squirrels like other parks too and there is dog park around the area as well as some playgrounds. A pond in there and close to some museums, restaurants, and even a botanical garden. Beautiful area but still pretty windy and cold during this time. It'd be fine without the wind but still can get pretty windy so remember to wear more. Summer is here already. It's time to check out the sheep in the meadow ;) I'll be passing by here again later today -- just put on my rollerblades. It's definitely quite an experience if you've never been here before, quite fashionable and on a nice warm day flooded with people. Nearby are the skaters, bandshell, park vendors, and the occasional rogue guy selling water from a cooler he is dragging behind him. Always something for everyone. This isn't a review for Sheep's Meadow during peak times--no Saturday afternoon sittings here. This is a review of the Meadow and its smaller adjuncts during weekdays. Bring a blanket, sit here as a long as you want, you'll see a lot of empty space and greenery, and more birds than people. Green green green, empty empty empty, birds birds birds, people. Sure there are exercisers and folks picnicking with their dogs. There are moms and strollers. There are even people mysteriously asleep, so soundly you could probably pick them up and move them without waking them. Somehow all their sounds don't travel. It's just all very... chill. And yes, Le Pain Quotidien is a half-minute walk away, ready for you with its overhard, enamel-shattering bread and its Arnold Palmers which I admit grudgingly are just the right sort of sweet--barely sweet--but it still feels like you're not in the city. You can sit there, among the dogs and strollers and people who are maybe kind of close but feel and sound distant, and you can let your eyes stray up to the peaks of the trees, swaying with different rhythms in different directions, mapping the shape of the breeze that moves them. (Too much?) Tidbits: * I prefer the littler field to the north of Sheep Meadow, between the Meadow and Terrace Drive, and mostly when I say I go to "Sheep Meadow", I mean this field. * As of Jun 2014, there's a new family of falcons in Sheep Meadow, in the southeast of the field. Prospect Park's mile-long meadow is the best for times when you really want suburban solitude in this city (there's really just so much green there!), but Central Park's Sheep Meadow is still a very nice place to unwind. While certainly smaller and definitely much more crowded than the meadow in Prospect Park, there's still a lot that you can do here. 1. Have a picnic 2. Throw a Frisbee, football, or stick 3. When the office handed the party planning reigns over to me, my first plan of action for the gorgeous weather was to plan a potluck picnic! Not having any idea of where to host the picnic, I called the parks department who pointed me towards the sheep meadow. One, this thing is HUGE. I got here bright and early (too early) and chose a spot by one of the few trees in the lot. A word to the wise, if you plan on having a picnic type of event here, the Trees are the best! Throughout the day you will have natures shade to keep you a little cooler in the sun-drenched meadow. You cant cook or grill here but pack a cooler bag with sandwiches and side dishes! Also, because the area is so popular for sitting on the grass, bringing doggies is frowned up - so leave Fido at home. The sheep Meadow is a great place to soak up some nature with city scapes surrounding you... literally a concrete jungle. Come with a comfy blanket or lounger, a good book and ice cold beverage. Invite some friends and you have yourself the perfect spring day. There are restrooms nearby as well. Come early and leave late- this place gets PACKED. read more

Let's play Never Have I Ever! Never have I ever...been to Sheep Meadow when it hasn't inspired me to think to myself, "Damn, I love NYC!" When the weather is nice, this massive lawn in Central Park is always packed with people - but it's not "packed" in a body-to-body, rush-hour-subway type of way. You won't have a problem finding an area to call your own - a hangout where you'll be surrounded by green space, not a bunch of random people's asses (although if that's what you're into, there are plenty of those to check out as well). It's amazing how effortless it is to find tranquility and relaxation in Sheep Meadow - in the middle of a giant open space, in the heart of an intense and fast-paced city, in the midst of an unfiltered mass of humanity. Well...the beauty of this is not lost on me. The general demographic of Sheep Meadow skews toward young professionals in their 20's and 30's - but to be fair, the same could probably be said of nearly every gathering place in Manhattan. In the bigger picture, however, Sheep Meadow attracts an incredibly diverse crowd - inclusive of infants through the elderly and every corner of the world. This is a place where people can read, sleep, socialize, study, do yoga, toss a football, get high, play cards, meditate, listen to music, have a picnic, or build human pyramids - really, the one and only common denominator of everyone here is a shared appreciation for the space. read more

Get here early. If you get here past 12pm you will miss how great the meadow can be when it is not packed with no elbow room . Besides filling up fast, the meadow was really nice for our group of 10 or so folks to just picnic. It's a nice and has a few trees for shade on the southern end of the meadow, but otherwise for the urbanite looking for a place to tan the meadow just might be your place of choice. read more

I love this park! Came here on a Saturday for a picnic with my graduate school program. It's pretty crowded in the afternoon, but you can still always find a place to spread out a towel and get some reading done. There are a lot of nice shading areas, and I can imagine the epic snowball fights that may go on during the wintertime. "Oh look, a cute little baby. Oh look, a cute puppy!" That's what I kept hearing myself say when I was here. So if you like cute babies and puppies, this is definitely the place for you. read more

Sheep Meadow is an expansive lawn in the middle of the park. As I have overheard the pedicab bikers say a million times, there used to be actual sheep there. The Tavern on the Green was the holding pen, and a shepherd would take them out to pasture every day just to make the park look pastoral. Now it's a very popular hangout spot in the spring and summer. I would recommend this location as a meeting place or for visitors. The southern skyline is very photogenic; the vast green and the city backdrop give it a "This is New York!" feel. (To get away and forget you are in a jam-packed city, a walk in the nearby Ramble or the further North Woods might be better options) read more

This is one of the best parks in NYC. And these are the best helpful hints. Helpful hints: Solo? Travel with friends and family after dark when in the park. Stay along the out rims of the park. BEST time to visit --Daytime, and weekends Days, Best time to visit -- go online and find out when the events happen. You will probably find everything from concerts to crusades to theatre. Most helpful hint: (And only an insider will tell you this ) Do not fall asleep on the grass there. :This park is full of mice and squirrels and they are pretty aggressive sometimes. Guessing there must be rats in there also but that's only a guess. If you must sit on the grass, bring sports blanket and keep your eyes open. Probably during the events you won't see much wildlife but many go to sheep meadow during quiet times --that's the time to watch out for the wildlife that you don't want to share your space with. Do not feed the squirrels. Due to the abundance of raccoons and rats in NYC, there might be possibilities that some of the squirrels might be ill, and unhealthy. Watch them from a distance, and then steer clear. Kids? Please accompany your kids into the park and keep an eye on them . This park is way too large for kids to be running around alone. This is quiet in the heart of the city and well maintained. Such a beautiful piece of land that you can sit in a bench or on a warm stone and have a picnic or just burn off some energy. My son was especially excited about the street performers and all of the vendors selling treats. Plenty of horse drawn carriages to have a ride from if you'd like as well right around the corner. A little slice of heaven in NYC.. Sheep's Meadow is essentially Manhattan's Beach. There is genuinely no where else in the world where you can be in the middle of one of the most populated cities in the world and completely forget where you are. I highly recommend people look in to the history of planning Central Park by Olmstead and Vaux to really get a sense of the master visionaries they were to have been able to design and execute this incredible oasis that is adored by virtually every single New Yorker. The official rules of the site include no dogs, no alcohol, and no large organized gatherings (such as protests or paid-for services ie. work out classes). Well, people bring their dogs, and as long as the dog is well trained, as most city dwelling dogs are, they are absolutely welcome. Some undercover vendors walk around selling beers, and truly it is the perfect place to crack open a cold one and soak in the rays. Everyone does it, just be low-key about it and the rule is not enforced. I've seen multiple organized gatherings last summer than I ever have in my entire life. I saw a group of about 25 people leading a prayer circle. Here's the thing, while the dog and alcohol rules may not be enforced, I hope the group rule is better enforced this season. In my opinion, no one is bothered by someone having a drink, or spread out playing with their dog, but I am absolutely bothered having to listen to a large group's prayer circle when I'm trying to relax and forget that I'm in the middle of one of the most densely populated cities in the world. If politics are (rightfully) banned from Sheeps Meadow, religious demonstration should be as well (besides individual prayer, of course). Besos! read more

It's close to bathrooms at Tavern on the Green, there's guys conveniently selling water and other beverages on hot days, loads of space for bringing outdoor games and running around.
