You know, it feels a little weird to write a review about a gas station. Yet, I feel compelled to…read morewrite about this one place. I don't live in Asheville, in fact I live very far away. I drive to Asheville a few times a year (anything to avoid flying with those stupid airlines), and since it's fairly close to where I stay, I will go there to gas up. Often when I've gone there, the attendant was outside cleaning the pumps or chatting up people. I don't know, it's just that there were some general good vibes. Is that weird? To me, it is a little bit weird in that almost all gas stations are places that skeeve me out. People watching is often entertaining and horrifying at the same time. Most attendants at these places obviously don't want to be there, and most of the time everything is dirty, even in the new places. So, yeah, it's a bit weird that I'm writing this. But, I wouldn't be writing it if it didn't affect me in someway shape or form. It has. It's not an earth shattering experience for most people, but it something I always notice when I'm there.

It's only about a mile from I-26 / US 74. If coming from the highway, take exit 33 for NC 191 / Blue Ridge Parkway. On a Sunday morning around 11am, this gas station and convenience store were busy with a variety of customers including families with children and out-of-towners like us. We even ran into our Airbnb hosts. I guess this place is befitting of its name. I'd never heard of the Hot Spot chain before this visit. At the time of writing this review, there are about 40 locations in the Carolinas. They're mostly in South Carolina, with multiple locations in the greater Greenville, Spartanburg, and Asheville areas. In North Carolina, I spend most of my time in the Triangle (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill) and Triad (Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High Point). There are no Hot Spots in those areas. I pass through Greenville and Spartanburg regularly on my trips to and from Georgia. However, I almost always fill up at a QuikTrip along I-85. It looks like there are only a couple Hot Spots along I-85 on that stretch. This Hot Spot has eight pumps. Apart from the branding, I can't say too much separates this place from other gas stations and convenience stores. It's run-of-the-mill, but also A-OK. I'd fill up here again. The price for premium fuel was in line with other more expensive gas stations like BP and Shell. The property felt clean and safe enough.

Could spot it right away as I was getting cash. I had to make a U-turn near the back end and then I find some guy parked in front of it so he could grab a case of beer. Finally, he drives away after eyeing me in the mirror. Then the air machine says offline. Then I find myself wedges between a mini-utility fan and someone getting stepping out for gas. Instead of explaining why they couldn't or trying to assist in any way, they were full of i dont care attitude and belittling. Fix your pumps! Put my card in, no chip reader, and it told me to cancel to get started. Did that…read moreand, surprise(!), it cancelled my transaction! So tried again and it locked my card in the reader to process the transaction and didn't give it back for a solid 2 minutes! Tried another pump and my card declined because it declined on the other pump when I cancelled it! Used another card and see above for same process. Lady at the next pump also tried a couple. Nope. They did have a clean bathroom but it's not called a bathroom station. It's a gas station!

On normal days this gas station still has a great beer selection, even some good beers on tap. They also have a chill area to hang out at out back. Some pretty good food trucks on top of all that.
