He explained how they can't get help, if they hire people, especially younger workers, after they get their first paycheck they quit. Then sometimes try to come back. I've been going to this gas station for years as the location is super convenient, just a few feet from the I-84 entrance or exit and on the way to White Salmon. I can't fault them because they can't find or retain help as most all service industries are dealing with the same. Retailers, restaurants, farmers market vendors, lifeguards, grocery stores - it's happening everywhere. Prices were better than any other station at $4.39 for regular which is $4.49 in Troutdale and still over $5 in Portland. They also have a food mart but I've never had a reason to go in there. Asked the attendant why this happened and was told this change happened about 3 or so weeks ago with no explanation as to why. They even have self-serve at grocery stores, but the lack at gas stations and the transient nature of customers and lack of customer service training (or interest in it) shows up at gas stations. At this spot, we sat for 5 minutes waiting for the attendant (we could have filled our tank and been gone, and the attendant would still have a job because someone has to staff the store). He took the card - I just love having a stranger wander off with my c/c), pumped the gas, and that was it. No windshield cleaning, no questions about washer fluids or tire pressure. This is deeply low skilled work, combined with zero customer concern.

There were limited pumps available and you I had to enter in how much I wanted to spend so I couldn't fill the entire tank. Inside the station the bathroom definitely needed a cleaning. It was a fairly well stocked convenience store though and the cashier was friendly. I probably would avoid this station if I could in the future, but it met my needs.

It's hard to know how much of this gas lotto is incompetence, & how much is intentional to keep a worker busy. Either way, it's annoying. High prices to hit travelers coming in off I-84 too.
