I have had ongoing acupuncture treatments for my lung condition now for over 3 years. I was previously paying out of pocket anywhere between $450-$500 a month with another well-respected acupuncture center that unfortunately does not accept insurance. And since my previous health insurance policy did not offer acupuncture coverage, I opted to go with what is regarded as an upper echelon acupuncture center. Once my new policy offered acupuncture treatment however, I went through my in-network directory with a fine tooth comb in search of a comparable replacement and settled on 4 options. I tried Shelly first because not only was she the highest rated acupuncturist in my area, she coincidentally was previously endorsed to me by my hairdresser. The other 3 were frankly a better fit for my workaholic schedule because they offer Saturday appointments but after trying each and every one of them (and some of them even twice), I felt that it was worth the compromise coming in Mon-Fri just so I could have Shelly as my acupuncturist. The silver lining is instead of having one Saturday appointment weekly, I now go twice a week. What I appreciate most about Shelly besides the fact that she is incredibly knowledgeable and utilizes a variety of versatile treatments, is her "energy" (some would call it bedside manners or people skills but it doesn't quite translate to what I'm trying to describe). She has this calm, nurturing and easy breezy energy about her so even if you're a stress monster like me (who often runs late because I'm always busy taking care of my clients' needs before taking care of myself...which is why I avoid Mon-Fri appointments), it is an absolute relief to know that she's understanding and flexible enough to accommodate those occasions I'm running behind. The other thing that no other acupuncturist has managed to do besides Shelly, is that in the 45 or so minutes that I'm there, she has repeatedly and successfully managed to expel a very unsexy amount of phlegm from my lungs. So while I just lie there dozing away at all of these other acupuncturists, at Shelly's I'm able to hack up all this crud trapped inside my lungs. It's actually quite an enigmatic art. At times, I sound like Linda Blair from the Exorcist but instead of judging the scary Larry sound or vision, Shelly's like that caring Catholic priest who just wants to get those demons out of my system. I'm exaggerating for dramatic effects of course but the point is, for me to feel comfortable enough around her to bare my soul (no pun intended) or in this case hack the sh*t out of my lungs should speak volume. If you are looking for a dedicated and knowledgable acupuncturist, Shelley is an exceptional find for which I am so pleased to offer my recommendation! I came to Shelley with no previous experience with acupuncture, although I had heard many positive things about it and was excited to try it myself. I primarily wanted to started treatments for an old ankle injury, poor immunity, and overall improved wellness such as stress management and sleep. The kind of acupuncture experience I was hoping for was one in which an integrated approach to wellness was at the forefront of treatment. I was pleased that the first time I visited Shelley, she had me fill out a comprehensive questionnaire about my overall physical and mental health. She then took the time to patiently go over everything with me - asking about my stress levels, sleep habits, health goals, etc. We then moved to the table where she inserted the acupuncture needles (if you are worried about this, don't be!). On following appointments, Shelley extended care with a larger amount of needles, ear seeds, cupping, and lifestyle suggestions. I was able to purchase a bottle of very high quality cod liver oil from her as well! Every visit, I fill out a short questionnaire laying out my overall current health so Shelley can hone in on the type of care to administer. Every session, I am left in the room for about 30 minutes with the needles inserted and fall into a deep, meditative "nap" which I enjoy immensely and look forward to! I came in suffering from occasional debilitating migraines and very frequent tension headaches. I normally go to acupuncture for body aches and pains. This particular time I had an upper respiratory infection with mucus and a bad cough. I didn't think too much would result from treatment but Shelley came highly recommended by a friend so I was open to trying. She asked my symptoms and diagnosed the causes of my sickness and customized a treatment plan that would address it through a combination of acupuncture and powerful Chinese herbs. After the treatment, I did feel more calm and relaxed and on the whole better. The magic really happened the next day when all the mucus disappeared as did the irritating cough which I couldn't quell with over the counter and prescription suppressants.
