Shelter House first came on to my radar a few years ago when I was searching for a homeless shelter in the area that accepted food donations that were leftover from a company holiday party (something that is surprisingly hard to find in the area).
I became interested in their mission which was to provide safe housing and life skills to homeless families due to domestic violence situations and soon started volunteering every Monday afternoon in their children and teen's room while their mothers attended professional development sessions.
I am not going to lie -- it was tough work! I was a 24 year old girl working with a wide range of children ages 2 - 16 with all different personalities and needs all by myself. I would spend my afternoons cuddling children, attempting to play football, teaching the Soulja Boy, and picking up blocks. But after coming in week after week, I found my groove and found myself falling in love with these children and their families. I actually tasted my first bite of daal here and it is now the first dish I order whenever I go to an Indian or Pakistani restaurant because one of the mothers at the shelter used to cook me an extra plate whenever I was there.
I unfortunately had to leave the program because of time constraints but I am writing this review in hopes that someone who is looking to give a little piece of their heart finds this place. These children need stable mentors and role models to look up to, especially males.
