For my first time at shelter lodge, I joined a family trip and went in blind. knowing I was fishing for the week and would be with family. This is always a dream for my uncle and he counts the days until the next yearly trip. Not only did the entire trip exceed anything I could have dreamed, besides the devine seafood we caught and took home, the staff is unbelievably warm and treat you as if your family. The staff has traveled from all different states and backgrounds to come together for one same love fishing. Everyday you rise for a full day of fishing, but not before a hearty meal prepared by their amazing chef (Kenny) and staff (EJ, angela). Each day you get the pleasure of rotating captains so you get the chance to spend quality time with everyone (kenji-raccoon, ikaika-Maui or auqaman , brandon- ohana no haole, eric- ice cream man scooping up the fish, michael- quiet ninja). This fine men took care of us day in and day out. Assisting and guiding us to find all the fish our heart desired. After a long day fishing they slay over cleaning and filleting the fish to pack it up for us all to take home. While gone all day Mandy, kelsie, Ashley, Eli, jayden, Aaryn would make sure the lodge and our stay was the best treating us like royalty. You have an amazing warm dinner and lunch daily. The owners Richard and Jackie have not only started an amazing experience they have trained their staff to be the best! If your looking for a fishing all inclusive trip this is the place to come. They book a year in advance so plan ahead! Thank you to the entire staff for all that you do. You completely made my uncles trip extremely memorable and we will forever have a soft spot for you in our hearts.

Great fishing, beautiful scenery, a super friendly staff, and the food...holy crap the food! If you've ever pulled up a pot full of dungeness crab, and eaten them an hour later, you know what I'm talking about. Before you leave for Shelter Island, go to the Alaskan Brewing Co., take the tour, and pick up a case or two of beer to share with the skippers. Trust me, they'll try extra hard to get you da beeg ones.

Shelter Lodge! I love Shelter Lodge, like no other. It is an absolutely fabulous getaway, especially if you love to fish. Everything is awesome about this place, fishing, scenery, wildlife, food and staff! I think I could review this place for pages and pages. There are four people on a boat, plus the skipper. You rotate skippers everyday, so it's a lot of fun to get to see the (equally awesome) different personalities. The owners (Yamada fam) are amazing- funny, sweet and so hospitable. Plus they have housekeeping & a chef. And the skippers for your entertainment :) Let's talk about the fishing!!!! 8 hours a day out on the oceans of Alaska is ridiculous... ridiculously heavenly! You can fish Salmon, Halibut, Black Cod and Flounder. My favorite is salmon fishing because they are such fighters and it's a really FUN fight. Halibut fishing makes you uber sore the next day, but there's nothing like pulling a 30-100+ lb fish outta the water!! The amazing staff does all the cleaning, fileting and then vacuum packing of the fish, separating them into boxes & even hauling the boxes to the terminal @ the airport for you. You cannot get better service. Now if only they could come home with you.... FOOD.... YUM. Man! Yoza is an amazing cook, he will knock your socks off. He is so good, he even made me special vegetarian dishes when I was there & they were ridiculously amazing. They provide all 3 meals, even cooking you bento box lunches for the boat. Just don't bring bananas or you'll get kicked off the island w/ them. Everything about Shelter Lodge makes me smile.... you can go fishing from the spit early in the morning and catch salmon w/ lures... you can gape at the eagles, the whales that bubble feed 100 feet away from your boat, the dolphins, crabs, otters, glaciers.... well worth it.

    So much fun!!

If you are looking for a great vacation for your friends & family, this is the absolute best full service fishing lodge in Alaska!! Richard, Jackie, & Kenji have left no stone unturned when it comes to guest comfort!! They cover all the details of a worry free experience!! The food, accommodations, & of course fishing is fabulous. You will have to book early (2 years). They are already full for Season 2017. They treat you like family & that is probably why they have repeat customers who has been going there for more than 20+ years. The scenery is breathtaking as a bonus!!

Captain Mike found us one other person to go which dropped our prices by around $20/PERSON. They were a little late starting the day because they had to pick up the other passenger from his cruise ship. Captain Mike said not to worry because they would keep us out longer to compensate for the lost time, which he did. Once we arrived at the first fishing spot, Captain David gave us a brief but thorough tutorial on how to reel in the big fish without hurting ourselves (backs) and tiring yourself out since we would be reeling from depths of 250-300 feet. This info was more valuable than I can tell you!! We went to 6 or 7 halibut fishing spots in the AM, then fished for salmon in the afternoon. We had a good catch overall for the day. Captain David event called out to his whale watching friends to find out if there were any whales to see that day. He took us over to where we might find them, but they were not around. He then took us to see some local sea lions up close and bald eagles in their natural habitat along the water. I appreciate the extra effort! When we got back to the dock, Jack gave us a masterclass on cleaning and filleting the halibut, rock fish, and cod we wanted to take with us to eat for dinner. He then gutted and beheaded the rest of the fish so they would be lighter for processing by the pound. Big Jim's suggested a fairly priced processing plant that froze our freshly caught fish and shipped it directly to our homes. --We had a great experience with Big Jim's Charters and will definitely book them when we return to Juneau and tell all of our friends to do the same! Thank you :-)

Disappointing and Overpriced Halibut Charter Experience Our…read moreexperience was poor to average. We are a family of four with two girls, ages 11 and 14, and this charter was not a good fit for us this past August, 2025. We were surprised to learn that guides were not allowed to help reel in the fish until they could actually see it at the water line. When fishing for halibut, the line is dropped over 300 feet with a two-pound weight to reach the bottom. Between the weight, the depth, and the rocky waves, it was nearly impossible for our daughters--and admittedly myself--to reel in a fish without assistance. For the price we paid, and after several conversations with the owner before booking, we were disappointed this was never explained upfront. It would have been helpful to know this charter was not ideal for families with kids or teens. We were also frustrated by the lack of basic amenities. The toilet on board was broken, leaving only a bucket with no toilet paper as the option. For almost $2,000, this felt unacceptable. No bottled water or beverages were provided, and the only snack was a single granola bar for a five-hour trip. For a premium charter, this fell far short of expectations. Another disappointment was with the fish processing. We paid the owner in advance for our three fish to be filleted and shipped home, only to be asked again for our credit card later to cover separate shipping charges. This was never made clear and felt misleading. Lastly, we did not catch our limit, and both the guide and captain repeatedly mentioned that a large fishing competition had just taken place in the area over the previous three days. Their exact words were: "It's not good fishing today, it's been way overfished the last few days and it will take about two weeks to get the halibut back to this area." It left us questioning why guests were still being booked at full price when conditions were known to be poor. In the end, we spent a lot of money for what turned out to be an average experience, with limited access to fish and very little in the way of customer service.

Our recent 3-day trip was nothing short of incredible. We limited out on halibut and brought home a healthy amount of salmon, thanks to Captain Dave's knowledge and determination to keep us on the fish. The crew worked tirelessly from sunrise to sunset to make sure everyone had the best opportunity for success. Beyond the outstanding fishing, the service was second to none. The food was excellent, the atmosphere was welcoming, and the conversations throughout the trip made the experience even more memorable. Captain Dave and JoJo make everyone feel like family, whether it's your first trip or your tenth. Their generosity, dedication, and genuine care have helped create unforgettable experiences for the veterans we serve. Thank you, Captain Dave and JoJo, for another amazing adventure. We caught our limit of halibut and even reeled in a beautiful yelloweye rockfish. From start to finish, they went above and beyond to make the trip special. When we arrived, they greeted us with warm scones and a locally made jam and after fishing, they treated us to the most delicious, smoked salmon salad.. such a thoughtful touch. They were fantastic with our three kids, making the whole afternoon fun and relaxed. The highlight for the kids (besides the fish!) was meeting Jojo's bunny, Mr. B, who lives aboard the boat. This was easily one of the best charter boat experiences we've had in our 5+ trips to Southeast Alaska. Dave & Jojo even helped process our catch when all the regular fish processors were booked during the salmon derby, this was a lifesaver since we wanted to fly our fish back home to Seattle. We can't recommend them enough. If you're in Juneau and want an unforgettable fishing adventure with amazing people, book with Dave & Jojo. Truly a 5-star experience!

We went out on the Hi Time boat a 30' which had plenty of room for fishing and warmth inside. We made it out to the fishing area within 15 minutes and had 4 rods in the water right away. The fishing was a little slow as we saw other boats not bringing in fish either and whales had entered the fishing area. While it was amazing to see whales, they do not help fishing. About halfway through the day my son hooked into a nice fish that was a great fight! He ended up landing a 30" King salmon, the biggest fish of his life! I caught a smaller chum salmon but was still fun to catch! My mother and father in law didn't get a chance to fish as we had no other bites. Dylan was working hard and being helpful to make the trip enjoyable and fun for everyone. He's a good kid and his family should be proud. We booked them through the cruise line to take us to see bears in the wild. First, the positives. The people were nice. It was a small outfit, but they had a mini-bus to get us at the dock and then had the plane waiting behind their office. Now the negatives. On the island (Chichagof Island) they were less organized. The van wasn't waiting for us, and when it did come they had to drop other folks off at a dock before our tour began. The people were still nice, but there seemed to be confusion about what time they were supposed to have met us. And while I understand that they can't guarantee bears, they should wait until bears are active. The guides told us that the salmon weren't running yet so the bears were more elusive. (So what were we doing out there?!) The salmon (and bears) become plentiful in late June, and into July. This had the potential to be totally awesome, but they were so eager to fill seats on their tour that they didn't consider that the bears weren't really out in force yet. If this had been in the middle of salmon season I could excuse the lack of bears since it's not really fair to hold them responsible for what nature does or doesn't do. But when they KNOW we're early, they shouldn't even offer the trip. It was really disappointing. I can't comment on their other outfitting activities. They may be outstanding. I think it's up to the buyer to verify if their activity of choice is really in-season or not. Don't assume they'll tell you before you sign-up. (Though, to be fair, since I signed up through the cruise line I have to put some of the blame on them for offering an excursion "out of season", so to speak.) If you are "in-season" with your activity, these folks did seem to be very nice and had a reasonable amount of equipment for fly fishing and cold weather in their office.
