Even though I got stuck in the middle of a zip line, between our zip line adventure and our visit to the sled dog musher's camp in the same day, it was hard to imagine a more perfect day in Alaska. The trip here started with a motor boat trip past pretty pretty scenery (see the picture I uploaded of a stream trickling down the mountain) to an abandoned gold mine. So far it's sounding like a Scooby Doo episode, but sadly there's no Ghost of Yukon Joe scaring off young whippersnappers from stealin' his claim. From there you're driven in an ATV up the steepest incline ever (30 degrees?) to the zip lines. This was our first time ever zip lining and I was afraid I'd be afraid, but I felt very calm the entire time and very safe, and was more interested in looking around while in the air. We considered zip lining on our honeymoon in Thailand - I'm sure the place in Thailand was insured, right? - but we decided to do it in the States instead so we wouldn't die. Our two guides carefully showed us everything we needed to know and then we were off, flying through the rainforests. We were told some segments took 30 seconds to zip across. I'm not sure if that's an exaggeration or if time felt like it passed faster while we were doing it. The highest segment was 180 feet off the ground. So yeah, I did get stuck in the middle of one of the lines. My glove got caught in the mechanism at the top of the zip line. Thankfully I wasn't scared - I just thought it was funny - and one of the guides rescued me. Our group of 8 - 6 strangers and ourselves - was pretty awesome. It even felt like the instructors wanted to hang with us, like we were the coolest group ever. The instructors warned us about banging into each other since we're all attached to the same lines, and after that there were a lot of banging jokes. It was noted that if you don't move your hand away in time after zipping down one of the lines you could get "finger banged." Our guides were really fun and one (Tyler?) would punctuate sentences by suddenly flying off down a zip line. If you thought smashing a phone down was a good way to punctuate a sentence, you've never seen someone suddenly fly away. You can bring your camera (hence all my photos attached to this Yelp review). You can also have one of the guides shoot a video for you of what it's like to zip down one of the lines. At the end of the zip lines there's a really high suspension bridge that makes for great photo ops, and then you get to repel down from the platform. When it was all over we were given medals and a snack. We felt like contestants on The Amazing Race for the afternoon. read more

This was soooo much fun!! It was a rainy, cold day in Juneau, but I really feel like that made the experience even more memorable. Maggie and Riley were great guides through the course and encouraged anyone that was feeling a little scared. I mean, you're hundreds of feet up trees with a cable holding you! The excursion started with a a boat ride to the beach and then you take a short walk to the base camp to get all geared up and ready to go! After that, you take a ride in a Mercedes 4x4 truck, up the mountain not before you take a group photo, though : and from there you take a slightly steep short hike up the mountain to arrive at your 1st practice zipline. After you get the practice line out of the way, it's all awesomeness that follows! The views are amazing and the thrill of zipping on a 180ft line at 35mph is indescribable! Oh, and the suspension bridges are pretty awesome too...although they were the scariest part for me lol. My husband and 14 y/o daughter also did the excursion and loved it as well. We'd do it again and you won't regret taking a few hours out of your day to have this once in a lifetime experience! P.S. You even get a nice medal at the end of the tour to prove you "survived"! :) Great touch! read more

While on an Alaska cruise last September I did the Rainforest Canopy & Zip line Expedition as my excursion in Juneau. It was the most fun I've ever had. You have 10 zip lines to zip through, 2 suspension bridges to cross, and an awesome view of the Historic Treadwell Gold Mine. Your guides hook you up will all the safety equipment and gear you need and provide you with a brief safety lesson before you take the off-road vehicle up the hillside to your first zip line. I will admit the first one was tough, letting go and just flying across the line, it took me three zips before I got the hang of it and ended up trusting myself and the lines but OMG it was amazing so much fun I want to do it everywhere I go now. Once you're finished with the 10 zip lines you return back to the base camp and are presented with an Alaska Canopy Adventures medal because after you've spent all day zip lining you'll feel like you just competed in the Olympics and a medal is something you deserve. If you are ever in Juneau and are looking for something exciting and different to do sign up and go you'll love it. read more

Holy god- why did I not quite put together that this would be ziplining *in* the trees? In Mexico we'd ziplined in the mountains, but from platform to platform across rivers and such. Never once were we in a tree. This was very cool but much scarier than my previous experience. Here you are high in the tree tops on platforms built around the tree, and they got crowded when all 10 people in our group were standing on them at once with the 2 guides. It would have improved the experience had we not been told on the way up how the trees often fall due to shallow soil on rocky terrain. Our guides were just kids, which was a little scary as well, but they were all very nice and we all survived. ;) In all seriousness, they did a good job and do enforce a no nonsense policy (if you touch the equipment you're wearing, they'll lower you down to the ground and you're done). Definitely not for the faint of heart. The first zip is a short test. Once you do the 2nd zip, the only way out is to complete the course or be lowered straight down--and it is a long way downI. It's a lot of fun, so if you aren't afraid of heights, check it out! read more

The experience was great, but when it comes to customer service from the desk staff = NO NO NO! After our zip line, we were all herded into the gift shop and photo center. The photo center malfunctioned with the memory card and the kid behind the desk was unable to pull up the photos for customers to purchase. He couldn't get help from any of the other staff working there. Our bus for our cruise came, and we had to leave right away, or else we would miss our ship. The staff gave us forms to fill out our email addresses so we could get our photos that way since they weren't able to pull up any of our photos there. However, they emailed me photos of the WRONG people and IGNORED at least 4 of my emails when I tried to ask about them pulling up the correct photos. I provided descriptions of our group and gave them the name of our zip line guide. We already paid them hundreds of dollars and went on the zip line, so we weren't their problem anymore, right? That seems to be their line of thinking. read more

This was such a treat. My son and I went out on a tour in celebration of his high school graduation. I've never been zip lining before and was a little nervous. The boat ride to Douglas Island was a treat too! Staff members Chelsea and Jet were friendly and helpful and we were thrilled to meet their dog, Kazoo. This was so much fun! I went on an Alaskan cruise and this was one of the options. I did the Rainforest Canopy and Zip Line Expedition. Having never ziplined before, I was a little nervous, but that quickly passed. We board a bus, get waivers and make it to the pier, where we board a boat that takes us across the waterway to a little cabin. There, we put on safety gear, strap our cameras to ourselves and ride in this massive Mercedes war vehicle. At the first zip, they teach you how to break and what to do if you get stuck on the zip line (one girl did). Then it's off! We have a total of 10 zip lines of various lengths. It was pretty awesome! I was either first or last, depending on when you went, I got soaked or not at all. Our guides, Tyler and Sean, rocked (and were cute too) and really kept me at ease when I was faced with an 800 foot zip line. I didn't care for the suspension bridges as I got really scared at how rocky they were, but other than that I loved every minute of it. After your last one, we rapel down to the ground, load up into the Mercedes, and get rid of all the gear while having a snack. This was a great way to spend a day in Juneau! read more

I wish wish wish I had a five star review about zipping through the rainforests of Juneau, which is exactly what I went to Juneau to do. As I tend to be anal retentive about travel plans, I call about 6 weeks ahead to book a Wednesday morning tour for myself and Adam K. Confirmed for 10:00am. Also confirmed that with a 10am trip, we will have more than enough time to get back and make a 3pm flight. Yay- zipline, here we come! One week prior to arrival - call to confirm and make sure I have proper directions, contact info, etc. Confirmed. Yes, I can almost see the treetops flying beneath my feet. Day before arrival in Juneau - call at 4pm to confirm our zipline adventure for the next morning. Yes, says the girl on the phone. She even adds "I'm looking at your names on our schedule right now. You're all set." And she adds for us to meet Alaska Canopy Adventures downtown by 10:15am and that we will be able to store our luggage in the van, as we need to check out of our hotel by 11am. Confirmed - I'm so excited and i just can't hide it. 10:12AM on the day of my big Canopy Adventure - two blocks from our meeting point, hauling my giant backpack along with boyfriend and his backpack too. Cellphone rings - IT IS CANOPY ADVENTURES CALLING TO TELL ME THAT THEY FORGOT TO SCHEDULE A TOUR GUIDE AND MY TOUR IS CANCELLED. As in, not going to happen. 10:13AM - I am standing in the middle of downtown Juneau with all of my luggage and a broken heart. How can you forget to book a guide? We confimed three - THREE - times. And i even reminded them the day before!!!!!!! I ask if we can work something out if I am able to change our flights. Woman on phone says she is rescheduling a guide for 11:30am because there are some cruise ship people who were supposed to be in our group too. But we can't make 11:30am because of our flight, which is apparently the only flight from Juneau to Seattle all day long. Also, Canopy Adventures offers to book us a tour later in the day at $100 instead of $170 per person. I explain that this won't cover our costs of changing the flight. She adds that the person who originally booked our trip should have told us that we'd have a hell of a time trying to make our original flight anyways, because the tour times can vary greatly depending on the group and we could have missed our flight anyways. She then says she is sorry, that's all she can do. Hangs up. The worst part isn't that Canopy messed up. I know people are human and these things happen. But seriously, how could they not put this all together the day before, when I would have had a shot at planning some sort of alternate adventure for my only day in Juneau? The worst part is that they didn't figure it out until THREE MINUTES before they were supposed to be starting my adventure. By 10:12 in the morning when they called, all the other tours in town to the rainforest and local glaciers had already departed and we were stuck in Juneau with all of our luggage to carry around til our flight took off. I am very disappointed with Canopy Adventures for their extreme lack of professionalism and total disregard for any sense of appropriate customer service or compensation. Lots of fun. You take a van to a boat to an ATV to get up the mountain. Once up there, you get breathtaking views of an Alaskan rain forest. The guides are helpful and funny. As for the zip lines themselves, they are one of the most fun experiences you will ever have. It is well worth the time and money. read more

Beautiful setting in a lush temperate rain forest environment. This site sits atop the most famous of Gold Mines, Treadwell. Gorgeous 200 foot Spruce and Hemlock trees are the setting for the canopy platforms, some are 180 feet high. You are zipping at up to 40 MPH over the glory holes and mine shafts, plants and animals are everywhere. The staff here is top notch. We were picked up near the cruise ship dock by a really nice guy (Seth) on a high speed jet boat. The boat took us to the "Gear Camp" and we disembarked to several very polite and knowlegeable guides who asked us medical and physical questions and proceeded to outifit us efficiently with the proper safety equipment, helmets, etc. Then, we were led out back to a super cool "unimog" and taken up a very steep incline to the top of the mountain. The guides explained everything on the way up and pointed out many natural features during a short hike to the first platform. Our wonderful guides, Chris and Ashely, were extremely well informed about the lay of the land, flora, fauna, the history of the Treadwell mine, etc...but our safety was quite obvously their first and foremost concern. They were serious about following procedure, but on the other hand, they joked with us, answered all our questions and made sure we had a wonderful time. They were both very sweet and funny. They hooked us into the first couple of lines, clearly explaining the technique and safety procedures without making us feel like stupid amateurs. (we had only ziplined once before). Very quickly, we were literally flying through the treetops in a beautiful Alaskan forest! There are 9 lines here, the first two are relatively short and simple, not too fast, so you can get used to the procedure.....then... time to fly!!!!!!!! 2 Skybridges and a 40 foot rappel complete this magnificant course. Whether you are a first timer, or you have zip-lined before, you cannot miss this trip. Juneau is really cool, lots of great restaurants and bars, but this was one of the highlights of our trip. From the boat guides, to the unimog driver, to the nice lady at the gift shop.....everyone was just awesome. Thanks Chris and Ashley! I am a 65 year old woman and this was my second time ziplining. All I can say is Craig was WONDERFUL and I only slammed into him once!!!! LOL. I think he is part monkey! Everything is secure and thought of, right down to handing out hairbands to the ladies for our hair (if needed). Zip lining was a lot of fun! Our guides, Mike and Zach, were very friendly and funny. They gave us the opportunity to do some cool things I didn't expect when signing up. For example, while crossing one of the bridges, we had the opportunity to hang off of it. We also had the opportunity to start one of our zips by doing a front flip. Of course, we didn't have to do any of these things if we didn't want to but I decided to try them and thought it was a little scary but a lot of fun. Oh my goodness!!! I was so afraid to zipline because I am afraid of heights...But....this was absolutely the most fun I had while on vacation.
