I've been raising monarch butterflies for years. One thing I've learned but sometimes fail to follow is...plant milkweed and when you think you have enough...plant more. Late in the season I had to call around to local nurseries in Brunswick County to try and find native milkweed for some hungry monarch caterpillars as they had eaten mine down to the stalk. Shelton Herb Farm had some available but not enough to feed the eating machines that are the monarch cats. Their solution....bring the caterpillars I had to their farm and let them free feed in their milkweed field. This was the kindest offer and literally a life saver. Such thoughtful customer service and so appreciated. Shelton Herb Farm is a charming nursery with a variety of herbs, native plants and garden tchotchkes. Shelton is my go to for herbs. I know the herbs will have a good root system and will mature to my satisfaction. The employees are very helpful. I highly recommend taking the time to drive to the farm. They also sell eggs as they Have chickens roaming the site. read more

A great place to find all kinds of herbs. I was looking in particular for Tarragon and they had it . The farm is tucked away down a road in Leland. I arrived and was greeted by a pup named Bella, absolutely adorable and very well mannered. This stop was during Covid-19 , so masks were required to go into the greenhouses and the number of people were limited in the greenhouses. There were plenty of staff to help you if needed. I never knew that there were so many kinds of mint! The mint just kept going. It was early in the planting season so some of the plants were small. There were so many herbs and they even had some plants to choose from. I finally found the tarragon, it was Texas Tarragon, they said that French Tarragon does not grow here. (Texas tarragon is also called Mexican tarragon). The staff are friendly and very helpful. Definitely worth the stop if you need herbs . read more

I had high expectations for this place. Maybe it's just too early on the season and they were packing up a lot of inventory for the herb and plant fair this weekend but there was a lot of mediocre plants. Many of the herbs were woody and now fresh growth so they had been sitting in those pots for a while. I went with a friend who is a retired master gardener and she only bought 3 things because she was so displeased with the selection. There were two farm dogs - one very social and friendly but the other one barked a lot at people and eventually warmed up. If I wasn't a dog person this would be pretty scary. I did get some plants and I'll give it another chance later in the season. read more

We were looking for pomegranate, lemon and fig Trees As well as an elderberry bush to plant in our backyard. They had them so we had high expectations of visiting this nursery. There was a very friendly dog that greeted us at the car and my kids had a blast playing with. Without the dog I would give my experience one star. An older woman greeted us and I asked for her advice about the trees we were interested in. She only wanted to talk about her herbs and tried to sway our decision into focusing on them which made absolutely no sense for the reason we were there. I then found the only other employee to help us with the trees and she knew absolutely nothing about them other than "the reason why all the leaves were yellow was that they had high amounts of minerals in their well water." Prices were not great as each item averaged about $25. I probably would have been better off going to Lowe's or Home Depot. read more
