I loved this pool when my family and I would go, years ago. I was excited to see that it had been…read morerenovated and recently re-opened. We took our out of state family to the pool, hoping to impress them with it's unique qualities. We didn't even mind that there is now a $6. per person entrance fee. This is what we experienced: extreme disappointment for the following reasons: 1. the best grassy area with lots of shade is no longer available. As the temperatures were in the 90's, this was a serious disappointment. No explanation for the closure was given. The remaining grassy area was quite crowded-no shade. 2. while the small wading pool and splash pad has been extensively remodeled and is quite nice (only about 2 feet deep), nothing has been done to the actual quarry pools. The entire surface was covered with a thick coat of green algae and there were large clumps of water grass in the water. While there were many lifeguards around, no one was attempting to skim the pools. As a former lifeguard at an outdoor pool, this was always one of my responsibilities. 3. not all of the quarry pools were open for swimming-again, no explanation was given for why not all the pools were open. To be fair, very few people were actually swimming in the pools, as the coating of algae was pretty gross. 4. for those under 18, a swimming test is required, consisting of a jump into the water in the diving board area-no blocked off area to do this, so kids are jumping in while others are diving-not safe! After jumping in and submerging, kids are required to swim a traditional lap and then tread water for several minutes. Our kiddo did not want to submerge in the algae coated water but complied with the other 'test' requirements. We left after about 20 mintes and our family was quite disappointed. This is not a venue I would recommend to anyone who actually wants to swim in an old quarry. It might be ideal for families with young children, but not for us. I might add that the kiddie pool is like a regular swimming pool and doesn't have the thick green algae floating on top!
