I bought 12 white pine trees in 1 gallon pots in August 2021 and planted them the next day. it's been 2 years and they haven't grown an 1/8 of an inch and look sick. I have much experience planting pine trees and have had great success with them except for the ones I bought at Sheldon's Farm market. I went to the market and asked for a refund or credit to replace the trees. I had to explain the whole story to 3 different people until finally I got (the old gu) whom I presume he owns the place. All he wanted to do was argue with me and tell me it must be my fault somehow. He offered me 50% off the price of any tree he had outside but what good was that going to do me? I'm glad I live far from Sheldons Farm Market because I will never go there again. They don't stand behind what they sell and want to argue with you. read more

Disgusting place! Yes they're cheap, for a reason. After we were nearly finished we realized that about 90% of our cart was expired anywhere from a month to...hold onto your seats...over a year! We told the cashier and she not only didn't apologize, but she didn't say a word to us! Please save yourself time and health and stay away, far away! read more

Dated. Grungy. Not very clean. Much of the reason prices are low is because the produce etc isn't fresh! Never been before, won't go again. All the loose onions were rotting and stunk. Plenty of cheap expired items...hummus expired 9 days ago. Uh no thanks on expired perishables. No way I'd buy meat from somewhere willing to sell rotten produce. I was at Shelton's yesterday 4/30/21 to buy my monthly meat, to my utter shock the prices have gone up drastically, normally I could buy all I needed for the month but I could not do that due to the price raise, so disappointed been going there for years now I have to find somewhere else to buy my monthly meat. Shelton's is one of my father's favorite stores on Earth. The meat is fresh and dirt cheap. The fruit and veggies are really farm fresh. The prices are beyond reasonable no just about everything in the store. Anything that can be found locally can be purchased here it seems.] The only downsides I can find is that sometimes the aisles get cramped with either shoppers and/or employees trying to stock. Also they don't have a lot of cashiers, so sometimes that can be a slow and frustrating process, especially if you only have a few items. read more

When an item is marked a certain price, a reputable business honors the price. They do not take the tag off and say it is mismarked and refuse to sell the item for the price the business marked it. Shame on Sheltons. There are many other places with integrity. I did not buy ANY of my items. They would rather lose the business and a customer. I will shop elsewhere. read more

What this location lacks in aesthetics, it gains in variety and charm. We have loved all of the meat we purchased there, and of all the places we bought beef spare ribs at, the prices here were the best and it was the meatiest we have found. It is fabulous to have an honest-to-gosh butcher shop around the corner. The folks are very friendly and will do their best to get whatever I want if they don't have it and cut anything just exactly the way I want it. The prices are great and the service is great. It is a small family-run kind of place. The aisles are a bit narrow but even the customers are very friendly about it. The shopping experience here is very pleasing in an old fashioned way where you get to know the names of the staff. I think the negative reviews I've read relate more to the reviewer than the store. Many of today's shoppers are impatient and used to super-wide aisles and don't enjoy the advantages of a small, family-type business. I guess that's why they are so rare now. read more

I was really excited to find a place to find local food (when it grows up here!) and a few bulk food items, local raw honey, Amish cheese from the area and meats. If you are eating real food, a great place to go and support a local business. They usually have good prices on milk and eggs too. read more

Now I have always like this place. It just has such a 'one and only' kida feel to it, y'know? The meat counter is cool. some days they have a buy one get one special on steaks that blows Martins away, the quality of the meat here is very fine. Then they have a killer greens and fruit section, that has some items that I have only else seen at a health food store.,(only else!?!) They have a great bean section, big bags of all kinds of beans (have you ever heard of Mung beans? me either) and a cool foreign cultures foods area. Place is almost always busy as all get out, and the staff friendly. They also often have little boxes with produce about to go out of date for pennies on the dollar. I really, really , wonderful place to have here in Michiana. One of the real things we have to be grateful for. Not like the homeless shelter near downtown . read more

Stay away, I got 10lbs of hamburger for the freezer and it was bad in two days. The prepackaged stuff is old to begin with, not sure how they are allowed to sell it! Best bacon! It's thick cut, delicious, and so meaty compared to supermarket bacon. Costs less, too! I love their cheese selection. They have some very good ones for bargain prices. It really pays to look at the names on each packet, You might miss something if you simply think, "white cheese," and walk past. Don't miss the butter cheese. And if you like Parmesan cheese on your pasta, they have packs of grated Asiago cheese that is delicious and thrifty, (it freezes well, too.) I really appreciate their produce. One time I had a problem with some spoiled produce, and the people could were simply splendid! You can get some produce that's in season in bulk for canning. (Honestly, some of their canning supplies are a bit pricey, but if you don't want to go to another store, it's handy to have the jars right there.) Plan ahead, watch the weekly adds, and reserve your baskets of produce for canning. Some happy days in the kitchen mean rows of jars in the basement or pantry, (or even your closet,) that have that home made taste all winter. I come into Niles once or twice a month and try to run all my errands in one day. A trip to Shelton's is always a must! read more

I love Shelton's. I may live hours away, but whenever I visit the area I try to time it with my grocery budget. Fresh vegetables, amazing fruit, an awesome butcher's counter--all seasonal, local, and affordable. Last summer I bought a 10 lb. box of fresh, juicy blueberries for $20, and they periodically have great discounts on larger purchases of ground beef. I either share the meat with someone or split it into smaller packs and freeze it. Last visit I was seriously tempted by some delicious-looking mushrooms despite an already full basket. Shelton's is a stand-by favorite! read more

Great store for plants and meat. They have an excellent selection of meat products. Great quality and prices. Their specials are often 1/2 the cost of local competitors. We always visit their greenhouse in the spring for a great selection of plants and mulches at excellent prices. They also have a large selection of vegetables but be sure to look over the basket deals well as we have found less than desirable fruits and vegetables about 1/2 way down the bushel basket. Shelton's also has an excellent selection of cheeses and grain products. read more

Good prices and such, was in to get some chicken, and had seen the meat cutters working on slicing meat, one person in particular no hat and a big thick beard,scratched his face, didn't wash his hands and most important no beard net to cover. Wow, I have heard good things about this place .. not today! when I walked in it smelled foul... checked out the produce it was nasty .. What to funny is .. they have a news clipping over the celery root and what to do with it .. I LMAO the the celery root was dried up tennis ball.. I walked past fermenting potatoes ... headed over to get a ham hock for split pea soup .. I could see now what smelled so bad a pool chicken blood leaking in the "cooler" the chicken was rotten. I looked in to the meat cooler and saw ham hocks.. it was far enough away from the rotting zombie chicken that I might be safe.. the "butcher" was waiting on someone .. when the customer was finished he walked right past me with a snear on his face .. joke around with a coworker for a few seconds, walked past me again with a disgruntled look .. and yelled out serving # 22 .. so I look around .. and yup there is a chalk board that reads FOR BETTER SERVICE TAKE A NUMBER. cool .. so much for advertising friendly service ... I guess the regulars have become nose blind. Now I see why the prices are cheap .. what a dump ! read more

Highly recommend Shelton's! My husband and I came here last night to get food for a family cookout. The staff was very friendly. Awesome selection of meat. We got 3 different types of brats. I think the flavors were hawaiian, cheddar cheeseburger, and jalapeno. They were HUGE and the prices were really reasonable. Fresh produce better than any selection in the buchanan/niles area. We will definitely be back for our next grocery run. read more

I WILL NEVER GO TO SHELTON'S AGAIN. LOWERY'S FROM NOW ON! Wednesday around 11 am. Older male Butcher was very rude and made it very clear that he was annoyed with me. He rolled his eyes, shook his head in irritation, had a snooty tone with me and wouldn't make eye contact with me. Even though he was rude, I thanked him at the end and he mumbled mmhhmmm at me. I made a mistake and asked for the wrong meat in the beginning and was treated horribly afterwards by him. I guess everyone who shops there better be perfect because mistakes aren't allowed at Shelton's! I'm the customer, I'm the one buying from you, I'm one of the reasons you have a job and get a pay check ( because i'm a customer who spends money there!) Don't treat me like that. I usually shop at lowerys but since Shelton's is closer I went there this time. Will never ever ever go back to Shelton's! I'll use the extra gas to go to Lowery's from now on. To add to the bad review, the butcher handed me disgusting meat covered bags. Do you really think I want raw meat all over my hands when I have to dig into my purse for my wallet and hold my son's hand? Lowery's always wrapped everything in white paper so people's hands weren't filthy afterwards. Lowery's cut's pork loins exactly how I ask. Shelton's doesn't.
