My wife and I wanted to go for a ride in the Shenandoah Valley while visiting from out of town in mid-September. Kevin at Shenandoah Bicycle Company did wonderful job of setting us up on hybrid e-bike, with helmets, patch kits, a lock and bike pump. The bikes were like new and performed flawlessly. We told him we were looking to ride 20-30 miles and he suggested the Singers Glenn loop from BikeTheValley.com. The route is available on RideWithGPS.com, and since I had already had a subscription to RWGPS it was easy to download the route and receive audible instructions as we rode. Traffic was extremely light and the scenery was georgeous. We had a wonderful afternoon and greatly appreciated Kevin's efforts to make it all come together. A+ bike shop for rentals. We rented two full suspension bikes for a weekend trip to Snowshoe. Snowshoe ran out of rentals and we were in the lurch. The Salsa Horsethief bikes worked great, looked basically new at pickup. Bikes ready to go when we arrived. Price was very good. Shop loaned us a repair kit, helmets and a lock to return the bikes on Sunday because they're closed Sundays. Luke patiently walked us through how the bikes worked, which was necessary since we'd never used dropper posts or disc brakes before. Very pleased, we'll be back. read more

He explained the features and options of each of the items so that I could make the best-informed decisions on my purchases to meet my specific needs. He ordered and shipped my pedals to me promptly. He also gave me tips on places where I could train where I'm temporarily living to prepare for an upcoming 500-mile ride for cancer ride. SBC should really be the control other bike shops look to when they are setting out. For me, what really sets bike shops apart are the staff. Both owners of SBC are masters of the trade and highly accessible in that they work at the shop and they are pretty much as involved in the local bike scene as one can be. They have also retained a knowledgeable and fun-loving staff. They will work with you regardless of your own knowledge and are very accepting in general. Prices are fair, service is on the low side but expect to pay full retail for most things. It is worth the service and supporting an excellent group of guys. They really are one of the cornerstones of the Harrisonburg bike advocacy and bike recreational scenes. read more

I was hoping to rent a road bike while visiting my daughter at her camp in Orkney Springs, VA. Before travelling from San Francisco, I had called Shenandoah Bicycle Co to see if they could help me out. Boy, did they. We talked about my set up on my bicycle at home, and what kind of riding and the distance I expected to do. I was told I would get a call back once they figured out if they could help me, and 10 minutes later, I received a call back with the news that they had something that would suit my needs. When I got to the shop, I took the bicycle, a Trek Ion Pro, out in the back parking lot to test the initial fit. While the bike was being equipped with my pedals that I brought from home plus bottle cages and a loaded under-seat bag supplied by the shop, another of the employees went over maps of three contiguous counties, and mapped out routes for me, one up to the camp and the others near by. After trying the fit one more time with my pedals, I was off on a 37 mile/2800 foot elevation ride to my daughter's camp through some fantastic back country roads. I returned the bicycle three days later, and celebrated the last ride through hot and humid Virginia with the O.G. açaì bowl. It was cold, tasty and the perfect thing to replenish my energy after a jaunt to and around the George Washington National Forrest. The last thing I did was grab some stickers for my car because businesses like these need and deserve a little customer love. I will be back next year and will hit them up for sure! read more

What a great bike shop! The instant we rolled up, the mechanic approached us to ask what we needed. My Mom's Independent Fabrications custom bike needed cable adjustments. He whisked the bike onto the fix-it stand and got right to work. Turns out, he was a welder for the bike company and most likely built her bike. Meanwhile, the small bits I needed to cap off my tire was replaced and was still asked by another crew member if I was being looked after. We neglected to bring our cable lock and was loaned one while they were closing up the shop and we would not have to rush back. We thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon thanks to the helpful and friendly crew. read more

The Shenandoah Bike Co. does business the old fashion way! They treat customers correctly. Once upon a time this was the an everyday occurrence, but on line shopping has truly taken it's toll on small independent shops like Shenandoah. This store has held on to their core values which is a true testimony to their owners fortitude! Even though I do not ride a brand they carry, they have been excellent in their service, advice and general helpfulness. They have repaired my bikes with speed, care and correctly. While they are a primary Trek store their knowledge and service goes well beyond 1 brand and if you happen to have a somewhat boutique high end brand, rest assured they know what you have and are able to take care of you. I've had the good fortune to live in a handful of places across the country and try a lot of different bike shops. Shenandoah Bicycle Company (SBC) is the bar I measure all other bike shops by. As other reviewers have mentioned, SBC is the central hub for bike culture in Harrisonburg. For example, they put on a number of group rides and put together volunteer groups to maintain local mountain biking trails. I also know that the owner Tom is politically active with Harrisonburg, trying to make it a more bicycle friendly city. If you're serious about biking, there's no doubt in my mind that you'll want to do your business at SBC. SBC is also just a really good bike shop when you put the former points aside. The staff are all very knowledgeable and friendly. I've done all forms of business with them: bike rentals, bike purchases, part purchases, and repair work. I have been happy with all of it. One thing I've observed is that the staff at SBC don't feel like salespeople. If you're interested in a bike, they genuinely try to fit you to one that makes sense for your skill level, knowledge, and budget. This is a relatively unique experience that I haven't had replicated in other bike shops. In short, this SBC is hands-down the best bike shop in Harrisonburg, and I would wager the best bike shop for a couple hundred miles. read more

I was wanting a new Ibis, and SBC is the closest dealer to where I live in Fredericksburg. After talking to Kevin about Ibis and their DV9, I had them order me one and in a week or so they called to say it was ready. I went there today to pick it up and I can't say enough about the guys at the shop. They took the time to patiently answer all of my questions an help adjust everything to my liking. It's an easy going and relaxed atmosphere in the shop, but you can tell right away this isn't your run of the mill bicycle store. Came in here while on tour to re-supply and get my rear derailleur checked out.. what great service! Was looked at right away, mechanic was very knowledgeable and detail oriented. I loved that they rode my bike around to check alignment, I've never had a bike shop do that before. Also, great gear selection, and bike selection. Lots of touring stuff and mtb stuff. We rented two bikes for the weekend last week and found the staff to be extremely responsive and helpful! They even gave us a trail map, told us exactly where to ride based on our ability level and were on hand after hours for us to return the bikes. After the first few hours, my boyfriend broke the pedal on his bike and we had to take it back to the shop. We were bummed because we had driven down from Maryland to go riding for the weekend. These guys floored us! Scott came in, 3 hours after they had closed, he gave us a totally new bike, and gave us a couple of t-shirts for free since we had to drive back to the shop. We again left the bikes with him and he met us at the shop on Sunday (also when they were not open), so we could drop them off before heading back home to Maryland. This is the Mecca of bike shops! There are multiple mechanic stands throughout the store, bikes everywhere, great selection of nutrition and merchandise and trail maps, and everyone who works here is super nice and friendly. They are all about promoting cycling as a community and way of life, and they welcome anyone who loves bikes. They carry Trek, Santa Cruz, Ibis, and a few others (can't remember all the brands). They also have multiple group rides throughout the week for all levels of skill. If you go through Harrisonburg for whatever reason, make sure to check out this shop. read more

This place is great! We spent a weekend in the Shenandoah Valley and wanted to do some mountain biking. We didn't have bikes with us, so we were looking to rent, and after learning that nothing was available near Luray, we headed down to Harrisonburg to check out this shop. Best decision ever. Not only were we able to rent awesome bikes, but the guy working there set us up with everything we needed, and I mean everything! Helmets, bars to mount the bikes on my bike rack, repair kits, and even a full plan for the weekend! He gave is recommendations based on what we were looking for, then showed us the trail on the computer, told us how to get there, and told us about an awesome and completely useful app called MTB Project loaded with information about the trails. He even gave us lunch recommendations! They were so accommodating and they made it a great experience for us! I can't say enough good things about this place!
