"Doug" Barnes who created the Parks and Recreation Department for Miami Dade County. At 27.7 acres Gerry Curtis Park has a lot of recreational space. The newly renovated facilities host a ton of fun activities which makes it the perfect place to unplug, get active, and have a great time. From after school activities to seasonal camps to sports, this park has basketball, football, baseball, racquetball, tennis, swimming, boating, biking, and more. Curtis Park has an older recreation center that offers after school programs, youth and teen camps and programs, and computers. The Department of Parks has announced the design plans of the new Curtis Park Community Center. The new 8,000 square foot building will have a large recreation room, a computer lab, classrooms, administration buildings, kitchen, art room, fitness room, restrooms, and outdoor pavilion. The new building will be a key component of bringing the community together. Other Curtis Park amenities include a basket ball court, baseball field, boat ramp, restrooms, picnic tables, playground, and a pool where you can get swim lessons. The park's expansive grounds ensure there's something for everyone to enjoy. This is a 14.5 acre park located in Miami across from Killian High School named in honor of Ronald…read moreRay Ehmann (1940-1975), a beloved coach of the Killian Cougars before his life ended tragically in a car accident at the age of only 34. Coach Ehmann was known for his love of sports, physical fitness, and the out doors. At Killian high school he was a biology and physical education teacher before taking over the P.E. Department. He championed his students and before his passing he accompanied six of Killian's most accomplished athletes to compete nationally in the Marine Corps Physical Fitness Test. A unique feature of this park is that it has a walking trail through seven acres of a preserved pine rockland habitat which is only found on the limestone terrain in south Florida and the Bahamas. The only trees that live in this habitat are slash pines along with an understory of palms, shrubs, herbs. Pine rockland used to cover 180,000 acres of Miami Dad County but after development, only two percent are left in public parks and preserves. During my walk through the preserve I spotted many Peter's rock agama lizards, an invasive species from Africa. They were first introduced to Florida in 1976 from the pet trade. Adult males have distinctive red heads and black bodies and can grow up to a foot long. Their range has been expanding and they are now found as far north as Jacksonville and as far south as Big Pine Key. Unfortunately they like to feast on Florida's endangered butterfly species like the Florida Leafwing and the gray Bartram's Hairstreak which also live in the pine rocklands. Scientists are currently studying the effect on the environment of these lizards and I was able to file an online report of my observations with the University of Georgia who is recording invasive species sightings. In addition to the nature trail park amenities include a basketball court, soccer field, softball field, bike path, quiet resting place, playground, outdoor fitness equipment, recreation center, tennis center and six lighted tennis courts. Winter, spring, and summer camps are offered in the park along with tennis lessons. This park is a respite of nature in urban Miami. Come out and play, exercise, bird watch, or just to enjoy nature. The park is open every day from sunrise until sunset.

The Doral White Course Park was built on the former Doral County Club's White Course Golf Course…read more Established in 2000, the course was closed in 2015. The land was then sold for mixed use redevelopment. Across the road the four Trump National Doral courses are still open for play. This park opened on May 4, 2022. It was designed with input from area residents. A highlight of the park is the shade covered imaginative golf themed playground. There are spinners, swings, climbing structures, and slides including a corkscrew. I love that the playground has a soft artificial turf to protect knees and bottoms. The park also has outdoor fitness stations, a multi- purpose green space area, fenced dog area, restrooms, practice putting green, and picnic shelters and tables. Landscape lighting with overhead and walkway lighting and security cameras were also added to the park. Another feature is a boardwalk that connects this park to the Downtown Doral Parking Lot. A Doral sign added to the park was a gift from the Miami Association of Realtors. This park is a tranquil retreat from the stress of everyday life. I enjoyed walking through the park while taking in the beautiful landscaping and visiting birds. This park is an important space for the people living in the high rise mixed use development. Doral White Course Park is a safe and convenient place to take the kids and dogs to play, work out and exercise on the free equipment, or just have a picnic.

Coral Pine Park is a charming and well kept 9-acre park in Pinecrest. It was a former Miami-Dade County park before being transferred to Pinecrest in 1998. Park amenities include a recreation center with an Everglades mural, lighted tennis and pickleball courts, an all-purpose field, and a shade covered playground. In addition to all of the activities in the park, Coral Pine Park is also a pineland preserve. Pineland is a globally endangered ecosystem. It is only located in south Miami, the Keys, and parts of the Bahamas. Pineland once covered 180,000 acres or 12 percent of Miami but by the time Miami turned 100 in 1996, less than 2 percent remained. Today only fragments of the Pineland remain. Pinelands contain 225 species of native plants, 20 percent of which are found nowhere else in the world. Five of the plant species are listed as federally endangered.

Holt's family moved from Shellman, Ga. to Miami in 1953. He grew up in Miami's Overtown and attended Dunbar Elementary School. At Booker T. Washington Jr. and Sr. high schools, he excelled in football, and in Track & Field, and especially in the sprint dashes. Holt ran the 100-yard dash in 9.5 seconds and as a result of his speed and dedication to the sport, he won many first-time honors. In 1960, he became the first African American athlete allowed to compete in Age Group Track & Field competitions against whites in South Florida, while running for the Florida Athletic Club. In 1961, Holt also became the first African American to make the All-Dade County High School Track Team and was recognized as one of the fastest runners in the world. He won an athletic scholarship to Grambling State University in Louisiana, where he competed against some of the best-known sprinters in the world, athletes such as: Bob Hayes, the 1964 Olympic Champion and the World's Fastest Human; Jim Hines, the 1968 Olympic champion; Olympians Charlie Green, Mel Pender, George Anderson, Stone Johnson and Richard Stebbings; and in 1964, He competed in the United States Olympic Trials. In 1965, he graduated from Grambling State and returned to Miami. In 1967 - 69, Jesse played for the Oakland Raiders and the Boston Patriots of the American Football League.

It drains out of the Everglades into Biscayne Bay at Biscayne National Park. The park is across the street from a distributary channel off the creek. Snapper Creek is a dog friendly park so feel free to bring your well behaved canine friends. There is a large open field for running and playing and paved walkways for strolling. The park is also kid friendly with an adequate shade covered playground with climbing structures and slides. The large trees provide shade and natural beauty in the park. While the park doesn't have a lot of amenities beyond the playground and benches it is still a welcome respite of nature and recreation in the neighborhood.

The park is also home to the Carlos "Patato" Pascual Baseball Complex. They have 4 very nice baseball fields that host many tournaments. The complex has all the facilities that comes with a baseball complex including concessions, restroom facilities and announcer's booth. The park is located right next to the Grapeland Water Park and behind a golf course. It is also close to MIA airport. The fitness trail is in need of some maintenance in certain areas and has old equipment along the route, but will get the job done. The trail circles the baseball complex. You will find some picnic tables on the perimeter near the front of the park between the parking lot and fitness trail that you can sit and eat or just kick back and relax. It is located off of a main drag so it is not very peaceful a spot. The playground, which is behind the recreation center is enclosed in a fence and has a very large jungle gym with a rock climbing wall, a bridge, and a couple of slides. There is a bench for parents to sit and watch there kids play. It looks like the equipment use to have a shade awning that covered it, but the frame is all that remains. The ground is lined with the rubbery mat material with a paved cement perimeter. The equipment is well maintained but limited. This park is decent. I would have probably given it a 3.5 if I could. The playground and baseball fields are top notch. But outside of that there is not much to offer.

The grass is cut are amenities are decently maintained. There are 2 tennis courts. They are pretty good and were very busy while I was there. It seems like that is the park's amenities that is the favorite and gets the most use. There is about a quarter mile paved walking/jogging trail around the park. That was getting a lot of use too. There is a lot of trash along the backside of the fence though. There are some benches within the playground area and scattered around the park. There are also some picnic tables around the park. The park also has a full basketball court. The court is in good shape, but one of the backboards and goals are missing. There is also a decent playground with two banks of swings, one for smaller kids and one traditional. There is a jungle gym with a slide and a thing to climb on. The ground is covered with a combination of artificial grass and wood chips. You will find restroom facilities here as well, in addition to a covered pavilion with picnic tables under it. You will need to make reservations for the pavilion The park has a huge baseball/kickball field that has a huge outfield that can be used to play Frisbee, soccer, football, catch and the like. It is well groomed and very spacious. All and all, this is a neat park. I would probably get there early because can get very hot out there and many people get there when the park opens to beat the heat.
