The owner handbook is so negative that it cast a pawl on our 4 day visit. It became a daily ritual to converse about the finer points of the rag (handbook). Specifically.. We brought our pet. Paid extra for her to be there. The Notes from the owners were negative yet numerous: ie "We were gracious enough to allow pets - You be courteous enough to... Keep them off the Furniture! Do not leave them Unattended.. so on and so forth.. Well, we brought two.. We allowed them on the furniture.... We left them unattended for periods of time.. We did as we pleased. We paid for the right to bring them - and we cleaned up after them when we left - our dog enjoyed the bed - remarking: "All the comforts of home, with a sheepish grin", when questioned! Loved the 4 miles of gravel roads to the place.. Don't trust the parking situation or expect fishing access to the near by river.. Treacherous!! Short on pots / pans / utensils / glassware.. Don't forget to bring your own bedding! Bring bags to remove your trash to a location 5 miles away! read more

DO NOT RENT FROM RIVER CABINS. A picture says a thousand words. Please feel free to zoom in. Rustic does not mean disgustingly unashamedly DIRTY. The kitchen utensils, cups, glasses, cookware and everything else, has not been replaced nor updated since 1984. You basically need to rent a uhaul and bring half of your kitchen, half of your linens, comforters, towels- just bring everything from home- DO NOT USE anything there. Drape the sofas, bedpost, use flip flops to shower, do not touch anything in shower, use disposable toilet seat cover. Just skip kitchen all together go out to eat. There are No lights on deck nor steps going down to lower deck; no lights on lower deck. So unless there's a full moon, you will basically need to bring flashlights, lanterns, solar lights, even a candle to light the way. The BBQ grill had used burnout charcoal from last renters. Couldn't open sliding doors facing the river at night because the screen doors are missing. The tv is BEHIND the sofa as if we have eyes behind our heads, and it is smaller than my computer screen. They offer streaming services- but when you open Netflix, they have created a profile with your name,in their streaming apps, without permission and it is impossible to log out of their streaming services in order to log into yours. So you are stuck with that. All 4 ceiling fans are very dirty, and with all the dust and dirt please don't forget your zyrtec. Bottom line for $145 - $165 per night, and having to haul everything that you will need- you are better off camping by the river, renting a cabin from another company or staying at a hotel. This people are riding on free natural views of the river and nature, while disgracefully renting out these cabins that are no better than camping under a bridge. My sister and I visited November 1, 2025, having planned a 4-night stay. The cabin has lots of natural light, a full river view, and is pleasantly furnished. The owner repeatedly told my sister the cabin had been treated several times over the course of weeks by two different pest companies, and said we might see "a roach or two," which is what she was told by her pest companies. Despite misgivings, we decided we left the next morning because the roach problem was far more than an occasional roach. They were in the kitchen, at the dining room table, and in the living room area on the sofa and chair and all the table surfaces. One actually got on my sister's neck while she was sitting in the reclining chair! We ate a chicken salad dinner standing up holding our plates to avoid the critters, and neither of us slept, fearing more unwanted visitors in the beds. While the kitchen, baths, and bedrooms appeared to have been cleaned recently, the windows, carpet and ceiling corners were another story. Do not expect to do any walking or hiking in the immediate vicinity of the cabin. This is not a $200 a night cabin. It would not be $200-a-night even without bugs. The owner (Donna) was pleasant and understanding, and she did take $50 off the charge for staying overnight, but it was a disappointing experience. Hopefully, the issue has been resolved. read more

Stayed in the Rustic Cabin. Location is fantastic. Beautiful views of the River. Cabin itself is romantic and peaceful. Unfortunately the Cabin was not clean. Dust was present on many surfaces. The shower was disgusting with heavy mold on the grout. The couches are old, filthy and desperately need to be replaced. There are dried flower arrangements hanging through out the cabin that are old and dust filled. The welcome book has outdated information and needs updating. read more

I highly recommend Shenandoah River Cabins. The cabin was clean and very private. Plus, the owner is friendly and helpful.

We stayed at the Siesta River Cabin for 3 days and 2 nights, June 2024. There is a bedroom in the loft and one downstairs. Our stay was in June and the one air conditioner they had was out in the living room and did not cool down the sleeping areas comfortably. An additional unit upstairs would have made a world of difference. The bathroom doesn't have an exhaust fan and black mold is growing on the ceiling. The hot tub was dirty and all the jets had a brown algae looking material around them. Think seaweed, but brown and in the hot tub. I later found out that we reserved through National Park Reservations. This link is not associated with the National Parks and they receive a 10 percent booking fee, so I feel confident that they aren't too concerned about reviews as they just need people to book so they can make money. The house is secluded and would be great if it was cleaner. You can access the river from the cabin. The owners were very clear and communicated well. The owners have other cabins, which we have not stayed at, but look to be in much better shape than the Siesta River Cabin. For the price, you could find better. We just stayed in the Siesta River Cabin for two nights. Like others have said, it's is a great location with beautiful river views. The cabin really needs a good cleaning.....lots of cobwebs and dust. The cabin has not been deep cleaned for months and the windows are filthy. The deck and area around the jacuzzi are full of leaves and dirt. The jacuzzi chemicals appeared to be off....the smell was overwhelming. We left the lid off for a few hours thinking it would fade but it did not. Ultimately, we were not comfortable getting in. Be prepared for spotty to no wifi, 3/4 of us had no cell service and you have to take your own trash to the local recycling center. There my be better options out there. read more

We stayed in the Siesta cabin over Presidents Day weekend and had a great time! The cabin is clean and well-maintained, and had everything we needed. The hot tub outside with a view of the river and sky was great even on a cold night, and the huge windows are great for watching the sun set. It is also very convenient to the Kennedy Peak trail or over to Shenandoah, including winter access from the boundary at Tanners Ridge. Donna was very helpful throughout our stay and we would definitely recommend this cabin to our friends! read more

TL/DR; Had pros and cons, in the end not worth $200/night. We will not be returning. We stayed in the Sierra River Cabin 12/4/2020-12/6/2020. Pros: Quiet, bathrooms and kitchen were clean (including oven, fridge and microwave), beautiful views. Nice pillows. Brad and Donna responded quickly to queries. Cons: We were told to bring our own toiletries (normal), but I didn't think that included hand soap (at $200/night, this should be a given) The cabin needs a deep clean--dusty/cobwebby corners and fans, smudgy windows, under toilet rim was dirty. Furniture was comfortable, but some pieces were pretty worn and mattress needs to be replaced--major sagging in the middle. ***Major Con*** We rented this cabin especially for the hot tub. The first two nights we got in in the dark. We noticed a smell, but figured it was either the plastic cover or the chemicals. When we went to get in this morning, we realized what the smell was--there was mildew/mold on the pillows and in the filter. When I contacted Brad via email to let him know, he responded with "Thank you for letting me know, my handy is there now dealing with some [of] it. He is also adding water and chemicals. Have a safe trip home." We would have expected at the very least, an apology from the owner, and perhaps an offer of a partial refund. read more

I've come here either right before, or right after Christmas 3X now. Stayed at Siesta 2X and Tavern once. Each are equally charming. Siesta has way more room, Tavern is much smaller and cozy. Most recently this week 12/26-30/2002. Each cabin has it's own "operating manual", if you read and heed that, you will have a great time. Hot tub and river view decks on each cabin. This is not a move in hotel, and no housekeeping. Bring your own sheets and towels. Kitchen is provided but basic. If you have a favorite pan, bring it. Pet friendly. If you stay in Tavern, be advised that the loft bedroom has 2 windows and 2 skylights, no shutters or blinds. When the sun is up, you're up! Also, its' a loft - if someone is downstairs in the kitchen or watching TV, there is no door to close. Brad and Donna run a great property, and a tight ship. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! My fiancé and I rented the Tavern River Cabin over New Years Eve 2020/21. We wanted to leave 2020 in the rear view mirror. With one exception, I proposed to her during this crazy year and wanted to end the year with a memory that we would have for a lifetime. Shenandoah River Cabins provided the cozy setting fitting for a memory worth the drive and remembering! If you are an outdoors type of person, like a quiet setting nestled near Luray Caverns right on the river bank, this is the place to stay. I swear we stayed up till 4-5 am each night we were there reflecting on life, our relationship, family, friends and watching the moon pass by. Loved the hot tub in the rain and the stone fireplace. Wish it were snowing though. So we must go back. ;-) As for the owner, Donna and Brad, THANK YOU for building these cabins so others may enjoy. My comment to us renters, please take time to clean up after yourself. If each renter took time to replace things they break, ruin etc, the next renter wouldn't have to worry or complain about something is missing or doesn't work etc. Just my personal thoughts. I met Kenny, the maintenance man. He clearly takes pride in caring for the cabins. A shout out to his son. You're going places young man. I stayed here in May 2022. I didn't have a yelp account before. I also saw the owner leave comments on a previous review, which made me not want to leave a review. I went through a parks page to book and had no issues with booking or talking to the owner. Afterwards, I contacted the park website to let them know how disappointed this location was being recommended based on the current conditions. That site did not have reviews, and that should have been a red flag. I booked this cabin for my husband and I's 10 year anniversary. Bottom line, this cabin was not clean. There was an inch of dust on ceiling lights and fans. The entire cabin smelt of mold and mildew. The wall/window unit does nothing to keep the cabin cool. We stayed in May and the temperature in the cabin was uncomfortable. I couldn't imagine staying here in the summer it would be sweltering. The railing going up the stairs to the top bedroom was not safe. It needs to be better secured. There appeared to be a past leak from the sky light window that leaked down the ceiling, and it looked like it was covered up with spray paint. I have since stayed in shenendoah again using an airbnb location that was a cabin, and it was clean, and we had a wonderful weekend. I won't be using the shenedoah parks page to book a house again. read more

We were looking for a nice rental cabin to use for our kids' Spring Break near Luray, because of its proximity to a whole lot of outdoors. We ended up renting from Shenandoah River Cabins, and were quite pleased with our experience. We stayed in the Siesta River cabin, which is one of several they offer. This one was great because it was the farthest back, and was quite private. It had a stunning view of the river, and from the hot tub (!) you could watch the stars come out. The highlight is the chalet-style front window, which gives you a constant (and private) view of the water. The cabin appears to have been built in the '70s and renovated more recently, and has both electric baseboard heat and a nice gas fireplace. There is also an air conditioning unit which helped take the muggy out on an unseasonably warm day. The kitchen is cozy and has a new stove. Tableware and cups (and a coffeemaker) are present. Both bedrooms have queen beds and are well-kept. Both bathrooms are functional and clean. The only downside we found was the water. It's very mineral-y and sulfurous (especially when using hot water) and tended toward yellow. This did clear up a little after running the water for a bit, and may have been an artifact of us being there early in the season. If you're worried, bring a jug for drinking. Or better yet, bottles of wine. Also, if you are coming as a group, or have a car with a trailer, you're going to have parking difficulty. Our minivan fit in the parking area, but only just. So in summary, it's a nice rental cabin in the woods, where the views and amenities more than compensate for any shortcomings. read more

We just returned from a thoroughly enjoyable family weekend spent in the Siesta River Cabin. When we first made the reservations we found the website really helpful, informative and user-friendly, and within a few minutes of providing my payment details I received a welcome email from Brad with all the information I needed to get there and get settled in. The approach leading to the cabin is made via a long and secluded gravel road winding through a community of small, well-kept cottages nestled along the shore of the Shenandoah River. It had a rather pleasant mid-century feeling to it that reminded me of some of the places we used to go when I was a child, so I was a mellow fellow before I even reached the cabin. The cabin itself was pretty ideal, especially for the price. It was clean and warm (we arrived in early March), and the view cannot be beat. As Nathan posted before, the chalet-style window lets in incredible natural light and a view that in March can be described as beautiful, and in Autumn I can only presume breathtaking. The cabin was well-appointed (it even had satellite TV which wasn't a draw for me, but I ended up watching) and in good upkeep. I forgot to bring towels (the welcome packet said sheets, so I brought them, but made no mention of towels), but I'll own this oversight as arguably they fall into the general "linens" category. The view of the river from the deck is beautiful, and the view of the river from the hot tub on the deck is sublime. If you want to do the tourist-thing (why come to Luray if not?) the location is ideal. The cabins are mere miles away from the Luray Caverns, which are a MUST-SEE, as well as many of the other attractions. I can't speak to Brandy K's experience with Brad and Donna, as mine was altogether different. In addition to the aforementioned ease of working with both of them in making the reservations, I also needed their assistance once during our stay when I over-complicated the operation of the gas fireplace, and made it inoperable (yes, I do the same thing at home). I called Donna, and she and Brad showed up within minutes and had us squared-away in no time. This took place well after 5, and they were pleasant, helpful and in no way inebriated (really, Brandy K? Rude much?). In closing, I absolutely recommend Shenandoah River Cabins in general, and the Siesta River Cabin in particular to anyone seeking a fun and relaxing family trip to the Shenandoah River Valley. They are pet-friendly (itself worth a lot), a great value, well-located, well-kept and the proprietors are pleasant to work with. read more

We stayed in the Siesta River Cabin on the river for 2 nights and truly enjoyed this cabin experience. It had a lovely view of the river and provided a quiet relaxing atmosphere. The cabin was clean and comfortable; the bed upstairs was a bit old and creaky but we got used to it. We sat on the deck quite a bit and just enjoyed the peaceful nature around us. All in all, this cabin proved to be an enjoyable place to stay. However, Falcon Crest was a totally different story. This cabin is in the mountains and was a 2 1/2 mile drive on a gravel road; which we were not told about until after the reservations were made. We accepted the drive though, as something we could overlook, until we reached the cabin and went inside. It was dirty and smelled. The cabin is old and not kept up well. The bathroom ceiling tiles are old and broken. The cabin was dusty and it generally felt unclean. We stayed the night and left the next morning; we decided that eating the cost of the second night was worth it. I was so disappointed that I called the owner and she apologized for the poor cleaning and offered a refund for the night that we did not stay. I am going to send her pictures of the dust, broken tiles and various other details. I hope the owners take the time to tidy up this cabin before renting it again. One last mention... we were asked to take our trash with us upon checkout and drop it off at the town dump; or if checking out on Sunday, to take it to the owners home about 10 miles away. We accepted this request, but weren't quite happy with it. As an end note, we would like to try the other river cabins, but Falcon Crest is a no-go for us. read more

Location, Nature - It is right on the river with splendid views of the river, valley and the forest. You can actually see stars in the night right from within the cabin. 2. Upkeep of the cabin - It appears the cleaning is limited to vacuuming the carpet. The bathrooms and the entire place had a musty, moldy smell. I was told that there were some cleaning issues with the staff being used and that those are now remedied. 3. Customer Service - One of the bathrooms have a runny flush and our voicemails were never returned nor did anyone come by to check on us. Donna indicated they had a family emergency to deal with and as a result were not able to return our calls. Given she has shown ownership in reaching out to me, I will be reviewing this upward. DO NOT STAY HERE! My husband and I stayed at rustic river for part of our honeymoon. I will start with a few positive highlights from our trip: the location was beautiful, we enjoyed the national park and Luray caverns, and the deck and hot tub were wonderful. I also enjoyed feeding the sweet, friendly cat every day, and we both liked her company. The owners were also very responsive, which was nice. Unfortunately, the cabin itself was not what I hoped for. The cabin was not clean at all and smelled musty and moldy inside, and dust was everywhere; my asthma/ allergies really bothered me the entire stay. None of the windows opened, which affected my breathing even more. We found mouse droppings in the silverware drawers and a roach (yes, I am absolutely positive it was indeed a household roach, not a wood roach). My husband also found a pile of something gross, which he believed to be dog droppings, under the couch. There also was no air conditioning, other than a tiny decades- old window unit in the kitchen. It didn't keep the rest of the cabin, besides the kitchen, cooled at all. I am glad the weather wasn't too hot during our stay. The college dorm mini refrigerator was broken, which was extremely inconvenient, considering we bought groceries and had no way to keep them cold. We had to buy ice everyday and luckily had a small cooler with us. I just would've liked to know ahead of time that the fridge didn't work. Yes, the fridge door was completely closed, and yes, the dial was turned all the way to the coldest setting. I let the owners know, so hopefully they get that fixed before the next guests arrive. The WiFi didn't work, but we didn't care about that and understood that wasn't guaranteed. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this cabin and wished the last few nights of our honeymoon were more enjoyable. This filthy cabin was absolutely terrible and disgusting. We should've received at least some of our money back because of the broken fridge, lack of cleanliness, and the roach/ mouse droppings in the drawers we encountered. Next time we visit Shenandoah National Park, we will stay at Skyland Resort or go tent camping; we will never ever come back to this absolutely awful cabin. read more

We stayed at the Tavern River cabin and found it to be exactly as described. The cabin was clean and well-maintained. The cabin is right on the river and it's gorgeous. We stayed over thanksgiving holiday. We hiked every day and brought a canoe with us as well. Outside, the leaves were crunchy under our feet and the whole area smelled of pine. You could hear the river trickling and the occasional bird or owl. At night, it's DARK and clear and beautiful - without the light pollution found near large cities. The temp outside was chilly 20s to 40s during our stay. But the cabin was cozy and warm. We used the hot tub every day - it was perfectly maintained and provided us with a relaxing warm soak after our long hikes and training sessions. The cabin is a short drive to larger shopping areas and other attractions. We visited several nearby parks and entrances to the Shenandoah National Forest. Inside, the cabin was clean and orderly. It had all the modern conveniences - cable TV, full kitchen.. oh and I I mention the hot tub? How fun and relaxing it was to spend the evening soaking in the warm tub with the stars overhead and steam from the tub escaping into the cold night air. We even made thanksgiving dinner at the cabin. Has a full size fridge, microwave, regular oven - the whole deal. The hosts were very responsive to our questions and concerns. Donna and her husband are honest, caring people who really want their guests to have a good time. Booking the cabin and taking care of payment was easy and convenient. The owners are good at communicating instructions for getting into the cabin, checking out, directions etc. They even left a book in the cabin describing nearby attractions, restaurants etc. We plan on booking one of these cabins again in the future. We had a great time and the whole experience was top notch. read more

The cabin was filthy. I get that it's in a rustic setting, but really -- huge cobwebs, grungy dirty, filthy kitchen. The hot tub was the cleanest thing in the cabin, thank goodness. Access to the pool was a nice surprise, I say surprise literally because the owners didn't tell us that we had access to a pool. Within minutes of our arrival the electricity went out, and the owner told us she'd be sending a local handyman over to fix it. When I asked about him (we were three women and none of the other cabins were occupied) she snapped at me that he was "a good Christian". The owners obviously put no effort into maintaining this place. They are not customer-oriented to say the least. One read through of the guest book affirmed that we weren't the only guests treated poorly or outright strangely. read more

I just stayed at the magic river cabin . It's a beautiful seclude cabin. The location is perfect! You are in the middle of nowhere but at the same time a 30 minutes drive to the town of Luray. There is a Walmart where you can buy anything you need for your stay. The cabin is beautiful with two rooms, dinning room, living room and a small kitchen. The cabin does not have wood floors . It has a carpet instead. Kudos!!! I took my one year old son with us n he is learning to walk so the carpet helped so much. The cabin is great to enjoy and relax with your family. I stayed in the rustic river before. However, I loved more the magic river. I will definitely will come back. Very disappointed. The website didn't show interior pictures, which should have been my first clue. I also should have come here first. The cabin we stayed in was just filthy. When trying to get ahold of Brad and Donna, they always seemed inebriated after 5pm. Rustic means the TV doesn't work and the water smells bad. It was nice to be close to the attractions, but for way less, I could have stayed in a Super 8, and probably had better service, with good smelling water, and a TV that worked, plus no BUGS! I do not recommend these cabins to anyone. I have stayed in cabins in other places before, and it just seems that to me, these folks are not experienced in the hospitality industry, nor this particular business. I will never stay here again. read more

I had booked 2 nights at the Vintage Cabin for $478, had to pay in FULL upon booking the cabin 3 weeks before our arrival. Due to a family Emergency (life threatening and involved inpatient hospital treatment) I had to cancel the reservation a few short days before our arrival. I was told they would try to rent the cabin on minimum notice, etc. I was firmly reminded of the cancellation policy, which by the way you should read PRiOR to booking your reservation. It is pretty stringent. End result I was refunded $177. A charge was made to cancel, for not being able to rent 1 night, my reservation included 2 dogs & therefore had to pay this fee for both nights, etc. This company is totally a business with no empathy for the human soul. I bet the cabins are beautiful but be aware if a family emergency should arise you will get no sympathy from Donna Eames. read more

Part of our wedding present to my son and his wife was a honeymoon in Luray. The first night they spent at the Mimslyn Inn because there were no vacancies at the river cabins. They loved the Mimslyn Inn. However, when they returned home, my son was sick. There was no heat in the rustic river cabin and it was Nov 2nd and 3rd. There was a large space heater that did not put out much heat at all. They did put a fire in the fireplace. But I was so disappointed that on their special time they had to freeze and come home sick. Not very romantic. I am very upset. read more

We stayed in the Falcon Crest very dirty it did have a nice view of the valley, but the live stink bug crawling around and spiderwebs on everything, alone with the hot tub that had a surrounding of plywood covered with glued on squares of vinyl flooring that was bubbled up from water damage and mildew stained curtains, it was just yucky, the TV is very small and not satellite so you either had to watch a DVD or snow. the stereo was actually a CD player with broken antenna. We left a day early because the weather was calling for snow and you have to have 4 wheel drive to get up to this cabin, when we call about our options, they told us no refund or moving down the the other cabins which they let us view and they looked nice right on the river. to pay an extra fee for pets and to leave because I didn't want my dogs or myself getting infested with no response to how filthy dirty the place was I would not recommend. will not return to Brad and Donna's site. totally NOT read more
