Avoid Sheridan Nurseries at all cost! Fresh cut Christmas trees average $200 and they are ridiculously skinny, have huge gaps between the branches, rarely have a "good side", stop absorbing water within days of being brought inside (even if freshly cut minutes before putting it in a stand full of water), last less than 10 days before they are totally dried up and dead, drop needles absolutely everywhere and there are very few trees left to choose from unless you are looking for a short Balsam. It is shocking to me that people are still being scammed into buying exorbitantly priced trees from them given how incredibly terrible they are. People might as well go to a supermarket and buy a tree for $50 since they would be getting an even better quality tree than they would get at Sheridan Nurseries. This sort of practice should be prohibited from continuing and the company should be called out for their false advertising (website and posts showing gorgeous trees, different types and heights and ample selection) when in fact they started letting customers pre-order trees starting in early November so when they receive shipments, the employees search through the trees for the nicest ones and those trees then go to fill all the pre-orders, leaving only the awful trees to choose from. They lie to customers to get them into the store and only then do the customers realize the trees that are left are nothing like the ones advertised. Sheridan Nurseries knows that many, many customers cannot shop around at different stores for a tree so they are essentially a captured audience who then feel compelled to buy a tree despite the atrocious quality and outrageous price tag. Sorry for my rant but I am so tired of businesses ripping off their customers, especially when discretionary spending for many people is now a huge struggle. Customers' expectations to get what they pay for are completely legitimate and they shouldn't even have to think about the possibility of receiving an inferior product or service when paying a premium or the top end of the market. The staff person was rude, unhelpful, unsympathetic and completely humourless. Clearly implied that I had killed the second plant even though I had treated them precisely the same. I complained about her rudeness to the head office and was told the branch manager would call me but nobody did. I would not recommend spending your $$ here. The staff at this location do not honour returns by giving refunds or credit. They find excuses for not giving anything back after their plants die during the year. For example a supervisor argued that a mint plant was sold as an annual not a perennial and would not give a credit note for 10.00 after their mint plant died. Mint is actually a perennial and it doesn't matter what they sell it as. The arbitrary nature of their arguments to get their way is laughable!!! Two yews died in a container while one yew was thriving in a container, yet they decided arbitrarily that they would not honour any refund or credit on the two dead yews. Container plants can die off just as soil planted plants can. Some container planted plants do well and some don't just as soil planted plants. Staff could not tell the difference between which plant had been planted where, even though she claimed she could. Again it was a way to not give anything back to the customer. Five or six staff members were standing around while I was arguing my case and not working to assist customers. But then again there was more staff than customers in the store! It looks like the word is getting around. After being given the wrong number to call head office by a staff number (Is there anything that this staff can do correctly and being told that head office is closed due to covid! ) I got through pretty quickly, made my case with head manager in charge of Yonge st. location and was promptly told I would be given a credit note if that's what I wanted. I don't intend to spend the whole 150.00 back in the store. Part of it yes and not on plants that might die and I would have to go through this ordeal again. If readers decide to buy live plants there, I suggest, readers keep their receipts and dead plants, and call head office to get money or credit back. The staff there is useless and powerless. Corporate head office controls any money that has to go back to the customer, even a measly 10.00 dollar mint plant! I would recommend not buying any live plants at any Sheridan nurseries since it is too much trouble to get them to honour their return policy. I've been to plant nurseries before where I've actually felt kind of alienated for not being a 50 year old woman who's read "Green Thoughts" 5 times and/or can actually keep an orchid alive. But I am a long term geranium cultivator and in general a great appreciator of plants. It was *thus* that my new roommate and I drove up to Sheridan for some apartment junglization. Not only did they offer to re-pot any of our new, or current plants, they carried everything out for us and gave us a patient run-down on the care of each one. Actually a fun experience..plant shopping. Of note: 5 small plants for $17, and the *huge* houseplant I took a photo of was currently on sale for $20! Plant selection is great, but the experience obtaining your gardening needs sucks big time. For a specialty nursery it is a very disappointing experience. The good: great selection of everything plant-related - plants, planters, accessories, you name it. The location is large, and pretty conveniently located near Lawrence station or the 97 bus. It really is a paradise for someone like me who loves plants. The bad: their stuff is pricey (they do have sales though). I got the impression from their staff like, if you're not here to drop a couple hundred bucks on a Christmas tree (I went around Christmas time), then we really won't give you the time of day. It did seem like staff go above and beyond if you're a big spender, though. The ugly: PESTS. I brought a couple of plants home from Sheridan Nurseries and didn't quarantine them (I'll take the blame for that one). The ivy I brought home had fungus gnats from the time I brought it home, so I immediately chucked it after a couple days. One month later, almost my entire plant collection has some OTHER kind of pest (possibly thrips). The plants from Sheridan Nurseries were the only new plants I introduced into my otherwise healthy plant collection, and both of those plants from Sheridan failed to thrive from the get-go, so yeah... very disappointing. The moral of the story is, if you love your existing plant collection, quarantine anything you get from here. I'll probably go back if I need some niche plant product, but otherwise, I'll be content shopping at my local fruit and veggie mart for plants. read more

This rating is strictly in regards to the user friendliness of the website. The impression is that Sheridan should be a leading nursery, and maybe the instore selections might back this up. However trying to access information online is pretty much a disaster area. If I wanted to buy something online from Toronto, it is much easier doing it at Wellwood Outdoor Living way out in Vancouver or Veseys all the way over in PEI. Seems rather a shame. In this age of online shopping across so many industries, not having your inventory available online in a way that is easily accessible is just not good enough. The information is already there since inventory is adjusted with any purchase or return at the till. How much time, money or effort does it take to bring the website up to the standard of a Cad Tire or Home depot to name just a few. read more

Parking was a bit tight, although they had a overflow lot with staff outside to direct us just across the street. Great nursery with knowledgeable staff, lots of choices of variegated coleus to choose from. The Kong Mosaic Coleus were simply amazing, and several flats to choose from. I got totally put off this place from the last visit. I've spent a few hundred dollars between the different Sheridan Nurseries in the GTA. We found a random pot there without a price sticker on it. We enquired about the price and the lady mentioned how it had been there for some time and she hadn't seen another one like it around. She said she believed someone else left it at the store while visiting looking for plants. My partner was very interested as it was rather different, the lady said just take it to the counter and they would see if they could find a price. After selecting a few things we go to the counter and the lady comes over - two staff there trying to decide how to put it through - misc pot - 5.99, the computer didn't accept their code for misc pot, the lady mentions to the cashier (its perhaps worth more than $5.99, he tries another code, with $6.99, then $9.99) - all in front of us watching the screen. Another staff member comes over and suggests they get another pot and try a code like that - next minute they are deciding to charge $15.99! for the random left over pot which the lady is now certain they didn't stock it. I think NOT.. Huge Profit from left goods?! I actually felt like just walking out at this point. I wouldn't come back again and will search for other places to purchase our plants from. As it goes - you have one good customer service experience.. you tell a few people.. BAD, you tell many many more. ------- Update : Head office contacted me in regards to the experience I had here offering an apology. I had a horrible experience at Sheridan nurseries. There is no parking in this area, and I went to park on the street. There was an officer directing traffic. There was a big black truck that was blocking the street and I asked them to back up as they would need to go back one car, whereas I would have to drive backward down half the street, with other cars behind me to pass. The woman gets out and starts screaming at me, and says she is going to speak to the police officer at the end of the street. Meanwhile, her partner moves and I park at the side so they can pass. The husband moves on, and the wife comes to my window and hits me in the face. She then runs to the police. I then was speaking with the officer and debriefing about what happened, and I started crying. Everyone could hear what the women did, that the cop thought I did nothing wrong, and he was telling me I shouldn't let her behavior get to me, and when I got the front of the line, the staff address me in a rude manner. I was still crying; they had no empathy and they were gossiping and then looking at me. Looking at the store, there is NO diversity, which can explain why they criminalized me. Anyhow, I am posting this whole experience on Tik Tok, Facebook and Instagram, as I got some video of this women, but if you are not white, I would not recommend you go to this area, and don't give your dollars to staff who do not reflect the diversity of the city we live in. This place is big, has every kind of plant you could ask for, the staff are everywhere and very attentive. Unfortunately, every plant I've ever bought here has had some sort of pest infestation. I thought it was a fluke the first time, but it happened again with a different plant and a different season. One had fungus gnats which then spread to my other house plants. I came here to buy my friend's favorite perennial as a gift and not knowing a thing about plants I felt a little lost but the staff were extremely helpful, knowledgeable, and accommodating. I had originally intended to buy the perennial and have it potted, and based on the exposure of where it was going to be located, and bloom time my "assistant" selected a few other complementing plants/flowers and also helped me pick out a really nice looking, modern pot...not one of those ugly terracotta pots. I purchase plants one day prior to their sales on weekend. I called in on the first day of the sale and was told they will do price adjustments if I can bring back the receipt. When I mention my purpose of the visit the cashier asked me who did I talked to about it and I replied "I wont record name unless legally necessary." After the cashier talked to her manager, she said this is only exception I will be given and we will give you gift card instead of refund on your credit card because you are not actually return your purchase. It is our policy...unless you bring back the plants and return/buy them again. I have been to other locations and never get this kind of hassle on pricing, return and warranty, except this one. Very knowledgeable staff, friendly service, and absolutely lovely plants. We were newbies to house plants (who can commit these days!) but managed to pick and purchase two beautiful trees, a braided ficus (~$80) and a tall dracaena elegance cane with 5 stalks (~$150). We had to rent a zipcar van to take everything home but it was well worth it! Lots of selection of little guys and bigger house trees, including plants that do okay in low light and indirect light. Staff helped us pick the right soil and planters and gave us clear care instructions. It was an absolutely painless experience and now we feel ready to take care of our new babies. read more

I went here looking for a certain plant and expected much more from this place. Big disappointment, lots of staff standing around chatting but no one available for service. It wasn't even that busy there! When I did finally get to speak with someone, they pointed me to a small section of the store that was hardly accessible (very cramped). They have loads of different variety of plants and they get 4 stars for selection, but ultimately I gave this place a 2 star for service. Would probably not go back there. Selection is decent but I find the plants don't look very lively or healthy compared to other nurseries. Service is okay, everyone kind of just stands around and doesn't help unless you ask. It's nice to be able to walk into a bonafide garden centre and proclaim, "I just want a plant that's hard to kill," without the judgment! All of them died within 3-4 months even though I followed all the instructions from their website and even bring the plants to the store when the leaves started to turn brown...I strongly recommend not to buy any plant from this store. read more

I went to this place looking for tropical plants and I wasn't sure about what to expect initially as they looked small from the outside. I was pleasantly surprised with their selection though. I found a nice variety of house plants inside(a few of each kind). What I really liked about them was the quality of their plants. They were really well maintained. Went to return two cedars which did not look that great when I purchased them (the last two left) The clerk told me they would be fine. My gardener said they looked sick and would die which of course they did within weeks. They refused a refund and offered only credit note. So their "no hassle guarantee" is actually being stuck with a credit note. I spoke with store manager Amin Datoo who was pretty rude and dismissive implying I didn't read the receipt which is ambiguous at best, does not address what happens when the plant dies and focuses on the hassle free aspect. Oh and he more or less accused me of not watering the plants and that refunds are only for plants they can resell. I've shopped and spent a fortune there but not again and now I'm stuck with a 100+ credit note. There are better places in Toronto for sure. read more

Terrible experience with manager & staff. 2 year perennial guarantee policy is not explained well making customers waste their time. When I had a situation, Karen the manager at Yonge street stood by watching as I interacted with junior staff. When she did join the conversation, she didn't bother to introduce herself as the manager, she couldn't answer my questions when asked (in any way that made sense at least), she displayed zero customer service skills and zero managerial skills...and I'm not sure why the 'not involved in the situation' cashiers thought it was OK to gawk. A Detailed Account of a Client/Landscaper's experience at Sheridan: Order at your Peril! My 1st phone/email order for pickup with a 3-week advance notice $2000+: The girl that took my order went on leave and kept me waiting by not letting me know she was leaving, and did not get anyone to cover her base. 'Someone else' gave me the business to business connection email, I sent in my order again - unfortunately later I was told that this person had also quit, and no one was covering his emails either. The order was finally placed after so many back and forth emails and phone calls. When the order was supposed to be ready for me to pick up, and I came in with my truck, I had to hunt around the whole store for replacements because among other minor disasters, the racks were mislabeled, plants were missing - and if you can believe it, my account number was not even on file. I enlisted the help of 'students' working there, ...and they did not even know the name of plants! What? They don't know what the plants in their inventory are called? Covering tracks, smooth talk, white toothy smiles and good looks won't work. I was two hours late for my planting session. 2nd phone/email order for pickup with a 1 week and a half advance notice $2000+: 42 boxwoods + mini-bark nuggets. What could go wrong? I went in to pick up my order and the boxwoods were nowhere to be found! The cashier could not find my order sheet either. Can you imagine the stress? After half an hour of a smooth talking, suave looking male student nonchalantly (and with a smile) searching for boxwoods I ordered more than a week ago, and the cashier not knowing what to do, I gave up on the waiting, went to the holding area on my own, found the boxwoods, pushed both racks up to the cashier, paid for them. Of course, the mini-bark nuggets were non-existent, and I was not informed that they did not have any. So, off I went to Fiesta Gardens with my boxwoods in tow - they had mini-bark nuggets. I told them of my exasperating, excruciatingly stressful experience with Sheridan. They were great - personally retrieved the mini-bark nuggets for me, we talked business, and I opened an account there. So much more relaxing there - they even had solo piano music quietly playing from the overhead speaker to calm the residue from my previous experience of what was, the beast within. Now placid as a daisy in June, I could proceed with my planting day. 3rd phone/email order for delivery with a 2-week advance notice $600+: Well, during my second order, I had a third order on the go - I knew now that it would be the last one before I would move on to do business with Fiesta Gardens. In this order, various plants and material for delivery were to be shipped to an address in Toronto with postal code supplied. This time, on the eve of delivery, I actually knew something would go wrong. Was it wishful thinking that actually made it all come to pass, or a premonition? Accumulated experience? I don't know. As you can imagine by now, yes it did all go wrong - and it's still in the making! Yesterday, delivery/planting day, Sheridan actually delivered it to a remote address in Richmond Hill, instead of to Toronto, and to a completely different address from someone else's account!!! - even after I sent the address and postal code CCing 3 different departments, being the annual, perennial, and account department (as I was told to do), spoke to different people on the phone spelling out the address. I lost a day of work because of their miscommunication and negligence. On top of everything, I discovered that for delivery, they charge landscapers $100, and clients $50. ??? A landscaper is a client. No? On top of already expensive plant prices, they provide very bad service, inconsistent communication, and they also gouge. As I write, I am still waiting for the delivery to be retrieved from the wrong address and delivered to the right one. They always say 'sorry' - there is no reparation for the experience of feeling the need to so-to-speak, psychologically evacuate the excrement that this place induces, piled one on top of the other, with each communication and visit having to do with Sheridan So! 3 strikes - in a row - and Sheridan's out, with all their mistakes and 'sorry's'. Throughout these nightmare scenarios, I have (mostly) kept all these experiences to myself, as sharing it with my clients in intricate detail with emotion in tow, would be unprofessional. I did not lose any clients (yet - as the last disaster is still in the making/fixing stage) but in future will ward off any business to Sheridan and channel it elsewhere - Hello, Fiesta Gardens. The downtown location is Christie, north of Bloor. They do not gouge, they take orders, do not keep you waiting with communication, they deliver, are very organized, with knowledgeable, efficient, and courteous client service. read more

I hadn't been there in a while, but wow, not a good place for organization, incredibly disorganized. I saw one (senior) staff member ask for instruction on basic deadheading. This does not inspire confidence. Staff could not give me an actual price on something I asked about and did not even try to look it up. I saw some staff fawning over a few clients but I felt ignored (a price??). I asked if they had a native plant section, only to be taken to a rack full of abandoned and abused non-native plants. There WERE native plants for sale in other areas I discovered, maybe the staff just don't know anything about native plants. Or couldn't be bothered. read more

Bought 3 dahlias, a purple salvia, 2 geraniums, a jalapeño and cayenne chilli plant, 3 succulents and a teacup taro back in May for a balcony potted garden. The dahlias had gorgeous blooms but didn't last very long. The blooms that came up after the purchase were much smaller but still beautiful, maybe we should have spent more time fertilizing. The geraniums were resilient but the ivy one didn't ever fully bloom after re-potting. The teacup taro recently succumbed to a horrible spider mite infestation and after trimming off the infested leaves we're waiting to see if it'll continue to grow. The best purchases were the pepper plants and the succulents. We've had upward of 10 cayenne chillies from just one plant and maybe 5 jalapeños, the jalapeños were not like the ones you'd buy from a grocery store though. They were think fleshed and never fully plumped or became spicy. The succulents are wonderful and we are hoping to winter them in our apartment for next year. I would recommend Sheridan Nurseries but be weary of pests like spider mites. read more

I have been to their Yonge Street location three times. Nice, helpful and knowledgeable staff. Though, I will not be returning anymore. I have had to put up with the invidious attitude of a short hair tomboyish saleswoman there. Not sure if she is the owner or just a salesperson with a snooty air. Unfortunately, during my last two visits I had to deal with her. She is unhelpful, condescending and the only reason I won't return.
