Luckily, my stepbrother used to be in the mortgage business in Lansing and referred us over to John at HomeLoans. Excellent recommendation, and we could not have been more pleased with the professionalism and service we received from John -- start to finish. From the very first interaction, I knew things would go smoothly. John has everything about the buying process/mortgage qualifications on lockdown. He's very familiar with the ins and outs of Michigan home buying. He's super responsive, especially via email...which was important to us as we were operating with a 5 hour time difference. He was always happy to chat via phone as well. My husband is a very tough mortgage customer (it pays to ask questions and be prudent, I suppose!) and John handled everything to his satisfaction, and then some. If you get 5-stars from Nick F (he promises to also write) it's really like 10 stars. Organized, efficient, professional and honest. Every step of the way things were handled so well, I almost couldn't believe it. I've had some nightmare mortgage brokers in the past that really soured me on the whole profession. John has reversed my thinking. I know I sound like an advert, but it's really true. It isn't that easy to find someone in this field that makes the process smooth and easier to digest, let alone...enjoyable!? In the end, we closed our "summer cabin" with very little difficulty (well, on the mortgage side of things, anyway!). John coordinated everything perfectly for a remote closing (not that easy) in the week between Christmas and New Years (even less easy), ran interference with the title company -- and really did us a solid. I wanted to give Benjamin Moore paint a try, and they were the closest store that sold it. I ended up needing to bring my 1 1/2-year-old son along, which is NOT ideal, as a paint store really isn't a great place for a baby (even one closely watched by mom). But everyone there was SO friendly and helpful, both to me and my son! First, after looking at a swatch for the color I -thought- I wanted, I realized it was more orange-toned than I liked. One of the ladies at the store immediately asked if I needed help, and when i described what I wanted, she pulled out numerous swatches and told me which ones in the color range I wanted were the most popular. After I settled on a color, they immediately mixed it up. The guy at the mixing counter was great, showing my little boy how they tinted the paint and put it in the mixer, then showing him the finished color. Afterward, they put my paint cans in a box so they wouldn't roll around in my car, and one of the employees carried them out for me! I won't say this is the cheapest paint I've ever bought -- not by a long shot -- but the experience was definitely much more pleasant than at any mega-home-improvement store I've bought paint at! We'll certainly be back.
