On our last night in London, we landed here for dinner. We ordered at the bar and sat downstairs. My husband, son and I shared the larger Fish and Chips platter (I forgot the name but it included a small fried bite-sized fish and pickles) and the Shin of Beef and Ale Pie. Although the food was good, it took a long time to come - and it came warm, not hot, so I take it that the upstairs kitchen had it done, but they took their time to deliver it to us. We'd order both dishes again if we decide to eat here again. I also ordered Yorkshire pudding, but when it ever came, I went to ask the bartender about it. He told me he'd get it - and again it did not come. I went to find them again and just asked for my money back. They were sincerely apologetic about it, but I just wish I did not order it since we wasted a lot of time waiting for it - just for it to never come. After we got the refund, we headed upstairs to take a peek in the small Sherlock room set up for viewing upstairs. Fun, but nothing huge. We were told to eat here by a friend who loved the vibe and multiple beers on tap. We showed up about 7:00 PM on a Monday night. Found seating at the furthest end of the bar and proceeded to order a couple of pints. I ordered their fish and chips (I am in England after all). My dear husband ordered their crispy pork belly after confirming with our server that it was good. When our meals came out it was clear that I scored. My enormous piece of cod was indeed battered in a beer batter and was super crispy. The thrice cooked chips (french fries) were good as well. The dish came with a good sized serving of fresh green peas. I love peas, so I was very happy with that. Num...... HOWEVER, my dear husbands crispy pork belly was ( and I kid you not) slimy. He took two bites and said it almost made him throw up. He told our server it was slimy and inedible. The bartender who had advised my husband that it was a very good dish took it off our tab so thankfully we didn't have to eat it. Unfortunately I did not take a picture, but visually it looked über slimy. Pork belly should be brown and crispy, not beige and slimy. I would go back to that pub for beverages only. I went to the Sherlock Holmes pub while in London and felt like it was a 'must do' before going. I mean c'mon, I'm a tourist and it's called the Sherlock Holmes pub! It was totally worth going to for me. So my friend and I popped in for a pint and were served with a smile and in exchange for a few quid got a tasty ale. The lounge bar is filled with various Sherlock Holmes artifacts including his hats and magnifying glasses but also upstairs his sitting room. Totally cool! read more

It kind of saddens me that the museum at 221B Baker Street has received such bad reviews from fans of Doyle's stories. I had really been looking forward to spending some time there, but after reading several not-so-glowing reviews, I revised our plans. I had no desire to spend hours in line just to see some haphazard displays with no reference to the author himself (at least, that's the impression I got after reading the most recent reviews). So, instead, we headed to The Sherlock Holmes. It intrigued me for being a restaurant AND a quasi-museum, which allowed us to kill two birds with one stone. The bottom level is the bar - you grab a table, sidle up to the bar to place your order, then sit back and let them serve you. If, however, you're interested in table-service, and curious about the diorama that they have set up, head up the stairs in the back. On the way up, you'll pass by a small rooftop terrace before finding the dining room at the top level. They were fairly busy the day we went, and all the tables in front of the glass enclosure around the diorama were taken, but we still had a view of it from where we were. The food menu has items named after stories or characters from Holmes' world. It's a little kitschy, but that's fine. I ended up with the Hound of Baskervilles Toad in the Hole, which is basically a huge serving of Yorkshire pudding with a helping of champ and sausages inside, all floating in a vat of gravy. My husband went with the Retired Colourman's Fish & Chips. It took a bit longer for the food to be delivered, which wasn't exactly surprising, given the number of people in the restaurant, but I do still think that our waitress was a little too over-burdened. The food was pretty good, though. There was way too much on my plate to finish - all that champ and sausage fills a girl up - and even my husband had a hard time finishing off his fish and chips. While we were finishing our meals, one of the tables blocking the diorama got up and left, so I took advantage of the empty table to crawl over there and take some pictures. I think they did a good job of incorporating a lot of Holmes elements into one scene, without going overboard. True, most of the things within the display are references that you'll only get if you've read the stories, but it's still interesting to look at, if you don't know them (according to my husband, at least). At any rate, the food was decent, and the diorama was fun, but the service needs some help. Oh, and I don't think the "mood" of the restaurant was helped any by the 80's American pop music being played inside, but that's just me. read more

Great place! We stay at the Hotel nearby (The Grand) and make the Holmes our last stop most evenings during our London vacations. We've had good meals there too. Always busy, sometimes crowded (like all London pubs) but always a great atmosphere, helped by nice staff and wonderful beers! A great English experience. And, YES - it is a themed pub, but not in a crass way. All tastefully done, with the main focus on beers and good times. Recommended. read more

Right across the street from our hotel. Wound up being on of our first meals in London. Restaurant upstairs was ok when the bar was packed and we were hungry but eating in the bar was far better. Since we had 1 person in our party that was under 18, we were also told we would have to leave by 9p, so if we decided to stay we would have 15 minutes to eat our dinner, at best. I appreciated that they told us before we ordered, but basically telling your patrons not to eat in your restaurant is bad business. Pay your kitchen an adequate wage and improve management practices in order to keep the best employees. Otherwise your existing employees suffer and your would-be customers inconvenienced. My sweetie is a huge Sherlock Holmes fan, so any time he's in London he has to check out this place. On this particular visit, we showed up a little after 7 in the evening to a jam packed bar downstairs, but we wanted to eat in the upstairs dining room. Imagine our dismay when we got upstairs to see a sign saying "restaurant full". Only there did seem to be empty tables, sweetie looked upset, and we had just paid a pretty pricey Uber ride to get over here. So we waited until the hostess came around, she echoed that they were full with a large party at the moment. Just for the hell of it, I asked, since it was only after 7pm, if they might have a table later that evening. We were told yes, in about 40 minutes, which would be no trouble at all to wait. We went downstairs to have a drink in the meantime (I had a VERY ample Aperol Spritz) and were seated just fine when we returned upstairs at 8pm. I mention all of this because I did end up feeling like we were somehow bothering the waitstaff by being there (even though the large party was on desserts and coffee by the time we were seated). And every other pair or party that showed up after we were seated was just turned away. Anyway...on to the food! The offerings here are fairly standard pub fare. To start with I had the baked Camembert, sweetie had a Scotch egg as he'd always wanted to try one. The cheese was nice though I would have liked I think more bread instead of the awkwardly hard beet and carrot strips (though I appreciate the nod to healthier eating). The bite I had of the Scotch egg was good but heavy for my tastes. For my main I had the chicken and mushroom pie. I was craving a good British pie for my last meal and London and this did hit the mark really well. The veggies including the small knobby carrots were quite tasty, too. Sweetie had the steak, which came with onion rings and fries. The taste I had was good but not the best steak we had on our trip. Overall I thought it was an "okay" experience. The food was fine, I probably would have rated the place 4 stars if I hadn't felt like the service was a little cold and unwelcoming. This place might be fine for a beer and good ambiance, but beware of trying to eat here. This was probably the worst meal we've had in London in all the years we've been coming here. The cheese toastie did not have any cheese on it - it was literally two pieces of bread. The butternut squash soup was dark brown and tasted nothing like either butternut squash or sweet potato....it was disgusting and was not eaten. The one and only waitress upstairs seemed overwhelmed and unprepared to help us address very poor service from the kitchen. We didn't have plans on going to this pub, but a local recommended to try the fish n' chips here. That was surprising since most pubs don't really make good fish n' chips. The restaurant part is upstairs. Since our mission was to have fish n' chips we decided to sit up in the restaurant part, because the downstairs was packed! Service in the restaurant was very slow! I don't think it was slow due to apathy, it was slow because there were only 2 waiters working and the upstairs was almost full as well. Since it took a while to order, we just decided to go downstairs to get our beers. The bartenders downstairs are super friendly and attentive. I wish we could have sat downstairs, but no seating was open. My advice would be try find a seat downstairs and order your food and beer there. As for the food my husband ordered the fish n' chips and I decided to get the schnitzel. The fish n' chips were delicious as promised! Fish tasted fresh and beer-batter was a perfect texture. We had heard amazing things about this place. When we got there we found the opposite. First off, I felt bad for our hostess, waitress, table buss, and bartender because the poor girl was filling all these rolls in the upstairs dining room. The only reason I am giving this place 3 starts is because despite being subjected to such a horrible workload, she was so polite and nice to us. As others have pointed out there were no fish & chips which is why we came there. So we opted for bar food. The nachos were basic and boring at best. The onion rings were really good. Too bad you only get four in an order. The how wings would have been better if they actually had hot sauce on them like a hot wing should. Normally I would have just asked for some additional sauce, but given how overworked our poor multitasking server was, I just ate them as they were. What really blew us away is when we left there were several employees outside having a smoke break. This all leads me to believe this place is horribly managed. Quick in and out and the food is always consistently good. Limited menu, but it's a pub! Guinness is fantastic here and the prices aren't too bad given the location. Can get touristy and they will ask you to leave the table If you linger for too long upstairs. If you are into the sweets, the sticky Toffee Pudding is very good. Pretty cool place! Bf and I were kinda hungry and needed to find a place to finally try fish and chips in London! This was it. The inside and outside are awesome. I love the decor and chairs and tables and the bar. It's a great feel. Some of the stuff on the walls is so unusual and cool, I was really entertained just looking around. BTW that's not a REAL dogs head on the wall is it?? I don't think so, but I thought... maybe. The fish and chips were fine. I'm not a fish and chips type, but they were good. Somehow bf managed to keep getting bones, even though we were sharing. Weird. I also ordered the breast of free range chicken wrapped in bacon. I not-so-fondly remember this pub as the place where I tore the right shoulder seam on my vintage suede duster, a hand-me-down from my Uncle Mike which I had worn religiously all through college and beyond. I never did get it repaired; the poor thing is still hanging in my hallway closet. My travel buddy and I stopped in here for an early dinner one night. We had done the back-street local pub scene, and thought we'd give the tourist trap scene a chance, mostly so we could talk about how the local places were far superior. But Sherlock Holmes gave us a surprisingly good experience. We were seated in the upstairs dining room, which seemed much more geared towards tourists than the downstairs. Our table was near a little roped-off area that was set up like Holmes's study, which was more cute than tacky. Our waitress was friendly and helpful, and didn't seem to mind that I ordered appetizers for my meal. We got our food quickly and weren't disappointed. I got bubble and squeak (I'd always wanted to try it), which was tasty and came with a good sized salad. Their Yorkshire pudding was delicious, and they had Strongbow on tap, which is always worth points in my book. The treacle sponge was pretty average but decent, and my friend said the fish and chips was alright - not spectacular, but not bad. As we tucked into our food, the rush of other tourists began. The upstairs dining room is pretty big, but it seemed like we were all being bunched together in one little area. Not that we minded the company, but it gets pretty hard to talk when you're constantly being drowned out by the large group of excited Texans next to you. Also, we really wanted to sit downstairs, which looked more like a real pub. Maybe it's only open later in the evening, but there was hardly anyone else in the place when we arrived, and it would have meant less of a walk for our waitress. Our request to sit downstairs wasn't even acknowledged as we were herded to the tourist area. All things considered though, it was a pretty good place to grab a light dinner and a drink. read more

OK Sherlock fans - although this place is pretty touristy, you must go. Try to go in the afternoon where you have it to yourself, nice and quiet and time to look at all the memorabilia. Formerly the Northumberland Hotel, it is now conveniently known as the Sherlock Holmes Pub. There's some pretty neat memorabilia about, and I loved the homage to Benedict Cumberbatch's BBC Sherlock on the menu. We didn't eat but we had a half of the Sherlock Ale and a half of the Watson's Wallop. We are real ale snobs so I'll say right now that they weren't the greatest beers ever, but if you're used to drinking North American swill these will still be a treat. If you're here, I have another little tip for you to see something close by if you are a fan of the BBC Sherlock series. Backtrack to Great Scotland Yard which runs between Whitehall and Northumberland Avenue. Take note of the building at #55 Whitehall which houses the Department of Energy and Climate Change, as it's got two very interesting Sherlock connections. In the BBC series, the rooftop served as a filming location for the final episode in Series 2 "The Reichenbach Fall". The scene is set on top of St Bartholomew's Hospital (the shots from the ground were filmed there) however the scene ON the rooftop with Moriarty and Sherlock was actually filmed on top of this building, a mile and a half away. James Bond fans will also recognize this same location used in "Skyfall". When walking down Great Scotland Yard, take note of the blue plaque on the side of the building, as this was also the original location of Scotland Yard - this would have existed during the time of the very first Sherlock Holmes stories before it was moved closer to the Thames in 1890. read more

Stumbled onto this place and kind of wish I kept on stumbling. Although I was extremely happy with my gin flight (Brockman's, Honeybee, and Beefeater Blood Orange), and the food was pretty great, the service left a lot to be wanted. The woman working the floor delivering food never greeted us, and had a scowl the entire time. Once we figured out she was not going to help or take our order, I went to the bar to order. The next server had no idea what she was doing. She completely skipped the alcohol in one cocktail, had to walk away every time I ordered one drink or one piece of our meal (could not retain information), and it just took forever and I had to just point at the menu multiple times until she mostly got it right. Was disappointed - if it weren't for the Scotch Egg + Camembert combo we discovered that was divine, it would be 2 stars. read more

However it had definitely taken a downturn during my last visit, in February 2023. Service was lacking. They seemed short staffed and had little to no interest in making sure customers were happy. I didn't realize how hard it would be to find a normal pub in this area. After wandering around for an eternity, I got wise and asked a cab driver. He directed us to this place, as the only "proper pub" in the area. The downstairs looks like a normal pub, with a bit of spillover into the sidewalk. Upstairs is where you can eat and it looks sort of like granny's attic. Didn't love the vibe up there. 90 year old ladies might like it. It was very English. Crazy bright lights. The thing with the fake Sherlock apartment is ludicrous but whatever it's their thing. Food was alright - fish and chips. Not bad, not great, just...fine. Large piece of (real with the skin still on it() cod, cold mushy peas, and slightly over cooked fries. Chips. Whatever. Service was perfunctory and satisfactory. Not particularly friendly - no greeting when we came in but hey, it's a real pub, not Cheers. It wasn't unfriendly, either. Except to the people they said "no, we're closed" to when they came in after 9pm looking for food. How about a sign or something? They didn't know. Would have bugged me had it been me but it wasn't so - I'm not too worried about it. Strangely they gave us a wine list and no beer list. You could order beer, though. Maybe they just expect you to know what beer to get? No idea. Seemed strange given it was a PUB. This is a classic London boozer. I didn't really expect too much of it, so was pleasantly surprised to arrive to the beautiful smell of Christmas aka mulled wine. We only went as part of our homemade Sherlock Holmes walking your. This pub is a classic tourist pub... Memorabilia on the walls and a replica of Holmes' study upstairs. There's a door on the side of the pub so fans can sneak in quickly take a few snaps of the study and leave without disturbing paying customers. We thought we'd grab a quick bite to eat whilst there. I wish we hadn't... The food wasn't good. Drinks were slightly over expensive too, but we knew what we were in store for. The classic London pub atmosphere and Sherlock stuff balances out the negative points. read more

Being a Sherlock fan, I simply had to have a meal here. Downstairs is just a normal regular pub. Upstairs is where the fun is. We went there about noon on a Sunday. We had such great times taking pictures prior to ordering lunch. The restaurant is surrounded by Sherlock memorabilia along with a recreation of his library. Our waiter, Alan, took great care of us as he helped with both food and drink selections. Alan was our favorite waiter of our whole trip. The place was very relaxing as we enjoyed listening to great relaxing music as we waited for our food. Food was very good and I especially enjoyed the Sherlock Ale. If you do not like beer at the restaurant, there is a bigger variety in the Pub which they will gladly bring upstairs. This was my favorite meal in London. We solved the mystery of the missing food.
