A very charming "typical" London pub that's a must for any visitor with even a vague admiration for Sir Doyle's immortal detective. Lots of kitsch interior details (like the head of the Hound) as well as gorgeous etched windows and decorated exterior. The upstairs is apparently made out just like Holmes' living room but I didn't check it out as we were in a bit of a hurry. Also had super friendly staff in a city where customer service isn't a priority. The food was just so-so - I got a Scotch egg and chips and my friend tried the steak and ale pie, both with imported bottled cider (no local cider options from what I could tell). The sticky toffee pudding was the best I've had, though. It's just a short walk south from Trafalgar Square. read more

Friends from UK brought us here because they found out my wife and I love Sherlock. We had a good mealtime together but it wasn't altogether because the food was that great. Pub environment was per the usual with dim lighting, fast service for beer, and a bathroom that was locked except for customers. I had the Roast Chicken which turned out to be a heaping portion. The Yorkshire pudding was a crunchy and hard texture.. I'm fairly certain it's not meant to be that way. My friends seemed to enjoy the food so I counted it as a one-time error. It does capitalize off the Sherlock franchise with pricey menu items, but I should expect that. read more

Beware this is a tourist attraction and drinks are very expensive! Can't comment on the beer as I had a G & T. This is yet another version of Sherlock Holmes's apartment at the Sherlock Holmes pub in Northumberland Street near Charing Cross railway station. This was originally a small hotel, the Northumberland Arms, but was refurbished and reopened under its present name in December 1957. Its owners, Whitbread & Co, were fortunate to own the entire Sherlock Holmes exhibit put together by Marylebone Borough Library and the Abbey National for the 1951 Festival of Britain. The pub was restored to a late Victorian form and the exhibit, a detailed replica of Holmes's fictional apartment, was installed on the upstairs floor. It is a split Level establishment with a bar on the ground floor and on the first floor, an intimate, covered roof garden and the Sherlock Holmes restaurant. The study can be viewed from both the roof garden and the restaurant, with an entire wall of the study being glass plated to give commanding views from where you are eating. In 1957, Whitbread and Co. purchased the entire exhibition that had been put together for the Festival of Britain, following its return from a world tour. A permanent home was required for its homecoming to London, and Whitbread's plan was to open up a themed pub in the centre of the city that would attract enthusiasts from around the world. The subject of this exhibition was of course, Sherlock Holmes, and it was not only the first, but also the most important collection in the world to be based on the famous detective. The Inn that had been known as The Northumberland Arms, standing on Northumberland Street, soon became The Sherlock Holmes. With the enthusiastic support and help of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's family, the pub was filled throughout with various artefacts and pieces recording the adventures of the Master Detective, including such diverse items as Dr Watson's old service revolver, original cartoons and the stuffed and mounted head of none other than the Hound of the Baskervilles. The main attraction however is a replica of Holmes' and Watson's sitting room and study, which relate to Sherlock Holmes and his escapades. This room is given pride of place adjacent to the restaurant , where diners are able to view the whole area through a large glass partition, with additional viewing space through windows located in the hallway. The exhibition items have not changed since they were first installed, and are now complemented by an interesting and nostalgic collection of television and film stills, featuring the famous actors who have played the Great Detective and his trusty sidekick, Watson, down the years. It was also at this venue where Holmes tracked down Francis Hay Moulton in The Noble Batchelors. Old Scotland Yard is just across the other side of Northumberland Avenue, and the Turkish baths that Holmes and Watson used to enjoy were right beside the Hotel. It is still possible in fact to see the entrance, which now forms part of the wall of the bank in Craven Passage. With Charing Cross Station immediately beside the pub, one can just imagine the duo dashing off to catch a train into the countryside on one of their adventures! read more

Three stars for the food. Five stars for the service and environment. We loved the cosy feel of this place and the kitsch adorning almost every inch. The service was very friendly and helpful, giving honest opinions of what options might be best for my tastes. I ordered the chicken and mushroom pie, which was very good but a bit cold in the middle. The beef pie was quite to my boyfriend's liking, though nothing overly unique. We enjoyed our experience here and would recommend for any Sherlock fan in the area who needs a bite to eat. read more

Walked by this place just casually exploring the city, so glad I did! I wasn't expecting to go back later that night for dinner! If you love sherlock like I do, this is your place. I wasn't in London long and didn't get to see Baker Street, so this was cool enough! My friend and I walked in and the downstairs bar was packed! THATS OKAY! They have seating upstairs people! We almost left defeated, but my friend luckily saw the stairs! Plenty of room up there- we made it early and were seated immediately wheeew ;) The food. Oh the food. I wasn't expecting to have one of my favorite and most memorable meals at some random place we picked off the street! I was thinking three star food? No no. Ordered the fish and chips, prosecco, and the apple pie. Best apple pie I've ever had- I think they used green apples because the tartness was not common! It was a sour and sweet taste, amazing. Never had mashed peas before and I hate peas. These tasted like mashed potatoes haha! I actually liked them! The fish wasn't oily or greasy, just the perfect layer of batter! Fries are hard to screw up, and luckily they weren't! The service was great, prices way fair, and the decor so sleuthy! There is memorabilia everywhere, and the menu is even themed. We found seat at the bar and order a few small things and was not disappointed. We are definitely going back before we head back home. Had such a great time the first time now we have to do it again. With a name like Sherlock Holmes and being so close to Trafalgar Square, this place screams tourist trap, however, we went anyway, and were pleasantly surprised on several fronts. First off, the place just looks inviting with the names up on the side of the building. There were people milling about outside smoking and we walked past them. The downstairs is the pub, and the sit down area for the restaurant is upstairs. We were told a 15 minute wait, but were sat in 5 mins. Dining area is actually not the large, due to the recreation of Sherlock Holmes' study when you first get upstairs. This actually takes up a lot of space, is glassed in, but cool to check out. I expected this place to be teeming with tourists, but from the sounds of the conversations nearby, I think we were the only "tourists" in the joint. Menu options were plentiful, and I went with the less obvious choice of a lamb shank, while other members of my party went with Fish n Chips. Oh, and the beers were delicious, as I stuck to the local London Pride beer. Once again, and I've mentioned this in other reviews European restaurants, if you're American and are expecting American style service, then you are constantly going to be frustrated and disappointed. The Europeans, and this includes the Brits, aren't table flippers, because they don't work for tips. They still work hard, but understand that dinner is an event not meant to be sped through. I love this! Our server was great and available to us whenever we needed him, and I never felt rushed or the feeling that we waited too long for service, based on what I knew about how service is handled across the pond. I would definitely recommend coming here with a good attitude and respect for the culture and everything will be fine. Thumbs up! read more

While we really enjoyed our time downstairs in the bar (4 stars) the quality of the food in the upstairs restaurant was awful (1star). The sausages were way over-cooked and the mash was like wet cement. The dining room itself was cozy and fun, and the wait staff were friendly and efficient. If you like Sherlock Holmes and happen to be in London this is a fun place to visit. The pub downstairs is almost always full from when it opens to when it closes. The dining room upstairs is less busy. There is a mock up of Sherlock Holmes's study to see and the restaurant walls are filled with items likely to be found in his flat at 221 B Baker Street as well as photos of actors who have portrayed him. The service was not stellar but we got by. They have a wide selection of drinks and food choices. I had the lamb pie which was delicious, though the accompanying veggies were cooked past redemption. One of my friends had the beef and marrow pie which she enjoyed. Overall I'd say if you want a fun place to eat and appreciate the great detective this is a good place to try. Prices were reasonable and the food and drinks were good. read more

Nice pub with outdoor seating on days where weather permits. I recommend their fish and chips here, tasty and nicely crisped. Typical pub fare and setting in a central location, across from Scotland Yard. Interesting historical connection to Sherlock Holmes writer, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, since it was apparently where he actually frequented during the time he started writing the books. read more

A cutesy little tourist trap joint. They dont rape you over the price of a pint, and the staff was friendly. Moreover, it was actually full of British people when i went there, so it wasnt so much like a Disneyland experience and more of a real place. Do not be fooled by the quaint appearance and interesting decor. This is a horrible restaurant. The service is abysmal and the food is mediocre. My wife and I were so hungry when we passed by, that we neglected to check Yelp or Trip Advisor. It appears that others have had the same experience we had. We sat for 45 minutes waiting to receive the drinks we ordered. When we asked the manager about our drinks, he asked how long we had been waiting. We said 45 minutes, and he said "is that in total?" As we were staying quite close to the Sherlock, it became our "Go to" Pub, during our stay in London. Growing up in Australia, fish & chips was a bit of a staple, that I had become a bit tired of over the years, however, I really enjoyed it at the Sherlock. Well cooked, fresh fish, great chips and the smashed peas for a bit of freshness. A really tasty lunch! I've been staying at the hotel across the street weekly for a month with early morning arrivals. The hours are posted as open at 11, but they haven't opened until 11:15-11:30 in my experience. It is 50/50 that the kitchen will be open when they open. Last week it was open at 11:30, today it was not open until 1300. Food is your average chain pub food, good enough if you are as hungry as the line of people waiting outside for it to open. read more

Generally I don't write a lot of reviews but my unpleasant experience made me go out of my way. On the menu several cocktails are listed and after we ordered some, it was surprising to see that their 'martini' was poured in a wine glass and their old fashioned in a big shot glass. Both drinks were extremely small and wouldn't be more than a few small zips. I went to the bar tender and kindly told him about our experience and he replied in an unfriendly way saying that they're just a pub and don't have cocktail glasses (even though they're on the menu). He said that we could leave if we weren't satisfied with the portions. They're not cheap drinks and we enjoy the Sherlock theme in the bar but it was just not worth it. A tourist spot? Elementary! We knew coming here meant entering willingly into a touristy environment. But that's why we came! And the location did not disappoint, in that respect. Props galore hang on the walls and in a Sherlock-office recreation. Movie stills and clippings from the Basil Rathbone films line the stairway from the downstairs pub to the upstairs dining area. Waitstaff was not great, food was not great but just fine. Perfectly okay trades for the atmosphere and location just off Trafalgar Square. If you're not above a little kitsch, this establishment will deliver your quintessential London tourist pub experience. read more

The evening vibe here was great. It was super crowded but they served us in a decent amount of time. Even though it was busting at the seams they allowed you to carry your drinks outside and sit on the steps across the street. They even sent staff out to collect drink glasses to prevent people from having to work their way back inside to deliver their glasses. We tried a local beer and it was great. Sadly I don't remember the name. I would just say... go check it out. It's a fun spot and really close to Trafalgar Square. So, there's lots to do around there. read more

I was in London on business and had the weekend to tour around downtown London. It was Sunday and getting to be around lunch hour, so this place seemed like a place worth trying. Boy was I wrong! This was my first trip to London, so I had no real background in the little tale tell signs to look for when seeking out a pub with food in London. I now know that if the pub isn't billed as a "gastropub", your dining experience may not be all that great. Since it was Sunday, they offered the "traditional" Sunday pub fare of a roast (beef, pork or chicken), potatoes and a seasonal vegetable mix. It would seem most of the pubs in and around London offer a similar menu on Sundays. I had the beef roast plate at 11 pounds and a coke. When the plate arrived the beef was dry, and looked more like shoe leather. There were three baby russet potatoes that were steamed to the point of being mushy and the seasonal mixed vegetables were green beans and sliced carrots. They were out of a can and not fresh at all! To top it all off, when the meal arrived, I asked for a second coke, to which the waitress replied "wait a minute" and went about serving other guests. I never did get my second coke. So I was forced to eat shoe leather without anything to wash it down with. At the end of it all, it took me another 10-15 minutes to chase the waitress down for my check. I've never felt so much like dining and dashing, but I came real close on this one. The entire experience was just plain bad! If you ever find yourself in London, looking for good food and an authentic English pub experience, avoid this place at all costs. Being situated between Trafalgar Square and Big Ben, I think they get a lot of tourist business and since the tourists don't know any better, they get what I, as a tourist got. read more

This was a cute place. Our whole study abroad group went and enjoyed some beer, wine, fish and chips and other things. I liked that you could order up at the window whenever you wanted but they would bring the food out to the table. It was a true pub with low-sitting chairs and numbered tables. So, this place was right across the street from where we were staying, so we thought we would pop in for a quick bite to eat. Downstairs, the pub, was packed, so we went upstairs to the restaurant. The setting, service and food were all fine, however, it took us a good 30 minutes for a drinks to arrive, and another 30+ for our food. The restaurant is at the mercy of the bar, so if the bar is full, service is going to be slow in the restaurant. If you can go off peak times, I think it would be fine, but 1pm on a Saturday afternoon, expect a 1:30-2:00 hour experience. read more

Monopoly Pub Crawl - Stop #15 - Northumberland Avenue (Pink) We were now just past the half way point and ready to collect another color group. The Sherlock Holmes was the spot to do it in, especially as we were just stuffed with energizing and alcohol absorbing burgers and fries from McD's. Unfortunately, this isn't the greatest of pubs but you make do with what you can find in this area. To be fair, it might be an alright spot to catch a quick drink and warm up from hijinks in Trafalgar Square, but for groups it's just a bit too small to really suit. Add to that a swarm of tourists and you're in trouble (or rather the overworked barman was!). Luckily, we got it and out in fairly short order, stopping just long enough for down a shot and get the board signed. It's at this point that you start to flag when you realise you are only halfway. It's important to push on as you've completed more than 2/3rds of the walking and the pubs start to come fast and furious (after the next 2 that is!). Overall, yeah probably will never make my way back here unless on another such crawl. It's a simple standard pub that draws in the tourists with its name and location. They have a restaurant upstairs (and I've heard mixed things about it), but I haven't tried it myself so will refrain from saying more. On to the next pub! read more

Just stay downstairs. We've been here a few times, and decided to eat dinner upstairs tonight. We were seated and that was it. The staff upstairs really don't care. 30 minutes later, we have not seen our waiter at all. Not even to take our drink order. The service upstairs is horrible. The only nice thing is the little Sherlock Holmes replica room. So I went up and asked a different waiter if we're gonna be served. All of a sudden in an instant the waiter comes out. I asked for the beer list and they didn't have one. He said they only have 2 options for beer. WOW. Isn't this a pub? I can't get the same beer options from downstairs? We just left, who knows how long we'll get our food. Guess they don't want our money. I guess they don't like Asians. I guess they just don't care. Oh but everyone around us has their beers and food. Say it ain't so. I wanted to like this bar. I'm a fan of Sherlock, not a huge fan. The Sherlock theme is cool. We went to Cafe Concerto across the street. Good food, timely service, and hospitable staff. Go there instead. read more

My first English pub experience was here, as it was directly across the street from my hotel. The beer was good, and the staff friendly. We did not eat anything here, but it was a great spot. I ordered two beers, and it was a little over 6GBP. I gave the bartender a 10, and told her to keep it. She was shocked, and very greatful. Apparently, people don't normally tip like that. My family has been visiting London for many years, and have never come to London that we did not eat at the Sherlock Holmes Pub, same table upstairs, right in front of the Sherlock's parlor. I always have the fish and chips and have never been disappointed, My wife tries different selections and has always been happy also, prices are very good. The staff always greets us with a smile as family and this year was the same. Waited on by Danielle this year and she was great. Thanks to the entire staff and see you next year.
