We were in the area looking for a "classic London pub". The Stanhope Arms was super close to our hotel so we decided to pop in. As far as the aesthetic and vibes, it definitely met expectations! It's been around since the 1800's and has a beautiful bar (see photo). The food and drink options are classic English staples- we all ordered fish n chips and sticky toffee pudding. I'm no English-food expert, but I can say both dishes were pretty mid. The fish was huge, but not crispy... chips were perfectly fried- peas were, well, peas (lol)! But the service was friendly and the whole experience was a good one! Would I come back? Probably not- but I'm still happy that this was my first English pub/food experience in London! read more

The Stanhope Arms is a neighborhood pub located in the Burrough of Kensington. Built in the 19th century they offer traditional British food. The location was perfect for us, opposite of the Gloucester Road underground station and in walking distance of our hotel. Also, I like that you can reserve a table, and that they are open late if you are looking for a late night drink. We stopped in late one evening and really enjoyed the crowd and meeting all sorts of people. At this pub, I was introduced to the non-alcoholic Guinness which is my favorite NA beers to this day!!!! read more

This was my first meal in London! I honestly don't have a good frame of reference but after a 9 hour flight... this seemed great! Order everything at the bar and then grab a seat somewhere. Steak and ale pie (4): gravy had good flavor. Pie was crispy and somewhat flaky. Not too much steak inside but did I mention the gravy was good? I got it with mashed potatoes and the gravy just seemed to compliment it. The Guinness tasted amazing for some reason! Maybe I'm just used to the pours in the US but I could have drank a few liters of this stuff! Overall, great intro to London pubs IMO. read more

My wife and I arrived at our Gloucester Road AirBnB after an 11 hour flight from Los Angeles and a 45 minute tube ride from Heathrow. Exhausted but starving, we ventured up the road and were overjoyed to find a proper traditional London pub not two minutes away. The Stanhope was the best thing that could have happened to us that damp and cold evening. It's golden glow welcoming us in from the night. We were revived with ale and food and the happiness one only gets from returning home after many years away. A proper pint of Guinness and a steak pie and chips for me, pint of Stellar  and fish n chips for the missus. And then back to the flat with full bellies for many sleeps. I look forward to my next meal at the Stanhope someday. read more

It's ok. Cocktails where terrible. Bread was stale. Peas were cold. Beer was good, pies were excellent but overall a bad experience. Service is also not so good and our table, which we reserved was dirty and in a bad spot. read more

So, I'm not quite sure whether I could consider this a pub or just a bar, but it seems that in England, or at least in London, pretty much all of the pubs simply look like old style bar. Hey, I'm not complaining, and in fact I personally don't care - they are pubs as far as I'm concerned, and like this one, they certainly have quite a bit of charm. Actually, it was in this one that I have discovered that in the six years since I was last here, craft beers, and proper Australian (or should I say Amercian) style craft beers have pretty much appeared everywhere, so I have to say that I'm certainly in my element here. read more

We popped into this pub near our hotel. It was pleasantly crowded, not chaotic like some of the pubs on busier streets. The food was delicious and everyone was friendly. It was a really nice evening. This is a cute small pub with great ambiance and decor. You can order from your table (recommended) bc the place can be busy. The steak and ale pie was delicious. The food was amazing but due to being such a popular restaurant we had to sit at a table next to the door and the hostess stand so it made the area not only very noisy but we caught a cool breeze every time the door opened. The ambiance is nice, the meat pie was rather good, the fish and chips were a bit below average. Assuming the pub caters to many tourists I would recommend the wait staff learn a bit more about cultural differences in restaurant customs and do their best to not appear to take advantage of tourists. We ended up with 6 additional items we didn't order but had to pay for. When I mentioned that there was a misunderstanding when ordering and asked whether some of the items could be taken back the staff refused. Felt a lot like a "tourist trap". read more

We stopped in wanting authentic London Pub fish and chips. We were told to find a place to sit which was fine. But then we were not acknowledged for 10-15 minutes and then informed we needed to order at the bar. Ordered our food, the runner brought it out - never asked if we needed anything else. I asked for a glass of water and he left before we could ask him for ketchup. When he brought the water he acted perturbed when I asked for the ketchup. The food was horrible. Neither of us could eat even half of it. The fish and fries tasted like they'd been fried in old oil. Super disappointed! One last thing , after sight seeing all day wanted to wash my hands before eating. Zero soap - not like it just ran out but dry as a bone. We went here after our (Warwick castle, Stratford-upon-Avon, Oxford) day trip. Our guide recommended this place, close to the Gloucester metro underground station. Ambiance was nice, bar was clean. You pick your own seats, and was told that they will start serving in half an hour, as the (?)kitchen crew were "on break".In the meantime, we met a family who was visiting as well, we didn't mind the wait at all. When services resumed. We found out that you have to order at the bar, but they bring the food to you. Had fish and chips with peas, substituted fries to sweet potato fries and red wine and Pilsner (light) beer for a non beer drinker like me. Overall, loved the food! Thank you! read more

Surprisingly good service, good food, and really good house music. I stopped by the Stanhope Arms for dinner on a Saturday afternoon during a brief stay in the area. I have eaten at a lot of English pubs and frankly, the service and food often leave much to be desired. I also really dislike the faux old pubs that are really just tourist traps. So, you can understand that I was a little skeptical. The order process is typical for a pub, where you order at the counter and tell them which table you are seated at. You get the beer immediately and they bring your food to the table when ready. The bartender/server was genuinely friendly when taking my order and I sat down to wait for my food. I noticed that the clientele were mostly locals, with a few tourists mixed in - that's a good sign! I must mention that the canned music playing in the pub was really enjoyable. It was a mix of classic rock that several people mentioned to the bartender/owner? as a really good mix. My food arrived a short while later (beef pie with chips, peas, and gravy). I asked for an additional condiment and the server brought it quickly and happily. The food was tasty and very enjoyable. Bottom line: If you are near the Gloucester Road tube station and need a drink or a bit of food, this is a good place to stop and visit! read more

This small pub is located just south of the Gloucester Road tube station. At 5pm on a Monday, it was packed, but we lucked out to nab a small tabletop two. This is a place where you seat yourself and order drinks and food from the bar. My husband ordered and paid, and returned with his beer and an Aspall cider for me. We had about a 35 minute wait for food, reasonable considering how busy it was. My husband's fish and chips were piping hot and delicious. I ordered the supergreen salad, loaded with shaved carrot and cucumber, with a lovely lemon dressing to bring everything together. Popped in here at 2:00pm on a Tuesday and had to order from the bar due to no wait staff. We picked up a couple pints and the regular fish and chips and the big fish and chips. The latter gives you bread plus some nice curry sauce. Both plates were cooked well, with crunchy chips and crispy beer batter cod fish. The tarter sauce was small and not that tasty, but thankfully the fish didn't need it. read more

Located across the street from the Gloucester Station, The Stanhope Arms predominantly had a clientele of business people and tourists. Given the fact that we had just arrived in the city, I wanted fish and chips for lunch. Shortly after placing our order at the bar, our meal arrived at our table. The cod had a great, even fry and the fish underneath was flaky. Accompanying the fish, the chips were crispy and the peas had a hint of sweetness. Stopped by here for breakfast. The cafe americano was very good and the full breakfast was everything I hoped it would be. Eggs, bacon, sausage, beans, tomaton and toast. All absolutely fantastic. This was the first place we hit after arriving in London, our hotel was across the street and we were really hungry after the long flight. We had a simple burger and fish & chips, this was my first experience with food in London, the fish was really crispy, and a little salt was required. Seriously, if you go here skip the fish and chips (which is also excellent of course) and go for the path less traveled with the meat pie. Stumbled upon this little pub after hopping off at the wrong bus stop. Decided to drop in for a quick meal and a pint. Normally food is ordered and paid for at the bar but we had a nice gentleman come to our table and take our drink and food orders. Everything we ordered came out quickly, it almost felt too quick. Cocktails were lacking in the alcohol department, they were very weak. Decided to switch it up and have a hard cider, I don't remember the name of it, but I think they said it was raspberry flavored? Whatever it was, it was delicious! The food was quite good, I got the Hunter's Chicken was had bacon on it and was smothered in melty cheese. My wife got the steak & ale pie with mashed potatoes, the pie was excellent, the mashed potatoes were like paste. My cousin got the Louisiana burrito and she really enjoyed it. Ordered 2 Beef Sirloin and half chicken Sunday roast but was told only one available, so I took the Hunters chicken so my dad would get the roast. When food arrived it was only a beef roast we got. Spoke to the gentleman behind the bar and said, this isn't what I ordered. His reply was "these things happen". ** No apology or anything. ** Throughout the meal the bar staff stared at me and made it very uncomfortable whilst eating my meal. I asked the bar staff why was he staring at me while I was eating my meal and I was rudely told to eat my dinner. Absolutely disgusting behaviour by any bar staff. I think management need a good look at their staff or more training should be provided. The receipt says the name Egest on it. read more

This pub is right off the Gloucester Rd station. So if you're thirsty and hungry like I was, just get off the station and it's right there. And just like the other pubs in London, this place also advertises "The Best Fish and Chips" and they all have the same type of menu too. What is up with people drinking at noon? I mean, I'm just a tourist and I'm on vacation so it's ok for me to drink but just seeing random Londoners drinking heavily during their lunch hour is an acceptable thing here?!? I wish I had that fortitude in California. But anyways, I did have their fish and chips. It was good, decent. Can't really say if it is the "best" or not, but the staff here made it their best to ensure I had the best experience. They would come by every few minutes or so and asked if I needed anything else.
