I cancelled two appointments with his office. First time because I had a bad cold, the second because of a family emergency. I had to cancel these appointments within a month of each other. During this period of time, apparently I cracked a tooth and developed an infection. I called Dr. Gormleys office on a Monday and asked to be seen asap. The receptionist told me the first appointment they had was on Thursday. I explained I was a patient, i was sure i had an infection and was running a low grade fever. I asked if I could be seen earlier than Thursday. The receptionist said this was the first appointment they had available. I asked if they accounted for emergencies. The receptionist explained to me that I had MISSED two appointments and Thursday would be the first appointment they had for me! I said I did not miss two appointments, I cancelled two appointments. Again the receptionist told me all that was available was Thursday. I did find a dentist that day who saw me in the afternoon. He put me on an antibiotic for 10 days. The tooth needed to be removed once the infection cleared. I now see this dentist for regular checkups. I question the priorities of this office. This was the first time I have EVER been turned away by someone in the medical profession. Obviously I needed to see a dentist and needed treatment. Also, I think the office staff is given direction on how to manage patient care by the person whose business it is.

My experience with Oneida Dental Group was very disappointing due to the front-end staff. What was most frustrating was being pushed toward taking out a personal loan for dental work, despite having insurance that their website states they accept. When I asked for clarification, it was made unnecessarily difficult to understand why insurance wasn't being applied as expected. Instead of clear answers, I was met with attitude. Dental care is stressful enough without being talked down to or pressured financially. Clear communication and basic courtesy go a long way, and unfortunately, that was lacking here.

Surprise, had to make payment after a root canal & crown. Dr.D doing the root canal left him with his mouth wide opened to go to the front and help Dr.J take payment from a patient. Another incident X-ray machine was not operating, had to drive back the next day from Syr.and was charged an office visit. Next time returning for the crown from Syr., waiting and told the crown hasn't arrived. Days later it comes in. Then the crown falls out, had to go back Dr.J puts it back on. Then the crown falls out again and he learns that they sold the business. The new doctor charges him $200 and tells him that the tooth needs an implant. Also, informs him many patients have crowns falling out. What a scam! Like a hit and run! Whatever it takes, just make the $$ and retire!

But let me tell you that if I didn't live in San Francisco now, he would still be my dentist. In fact, for 10 years after I moved to San Francisco I would make sure to go to Dr. Gawkins when I visited my parents. My whole family has always seen him. His office staff are like family, and they even came to my mom's funeral together - can you say that about your dentist? I heard that the doctor has recently folded his practice in with a practice in Canastota, but I don't know anything about it. I'll update my review when I do get that info, but until then, I'll just say that "I Heart Dr. Gawkins"...and you will too.

I did all the things, all of them Arrived to my supposed-to-be consultation with the dental proprietor of the establishment, to be served a cup of rinse. I rinsed. I spat. I sat awkwardly through 20 pictures of my teeth being taken by digital camera. I held the tongs when asked. My husband raised an eyebrow. I shrugged. I was there to discuss a plan for getting implants, as my teeth did not make it through terminal lung cancer as peppy as I did. When I informed them I was not there for the $149 super special super cleaning, confusion was thick. I said again, I was supposed to see the owner. Andrea said she works with the #1 implant specialist in the country. I was stoked. We then waited 30 minutes for the dentist who showed up delightful, gentle and absolutely clueless to anything. She asked why I was there. I said to fix my teeth. She said what's wrong with them. I said there's only 7. She asked what I was specifically there for. Now less sure, I answered... expertise? On... dental... implants? Did no one... sigh. She excised herself to peer at my X-rays for the first time, and then said she would not be able to help me, but handed me a useless post-it where 'a firmer cancer patient like me can go to get specialized care for my cancer deformity.' Um. Those teeth were pulled in the 90's, back when sedation dentistry wasn't really a thing, and my dentist pulled anything that needed more than 10 minutes work because I had panic disorder. Unacceptable in the late 80's and early 90's. Point is, it was a waste of time, a schmooze to get me there and it was irritating because now my sedation dentist is like: appreciate what you have. And maybe that's it. I'll give him 23k because my deformity, whether from cancer or anxiety, doesn't bother him And he knows I'd absolutely smack him if he said I was deformed. Because what a douche to the ego High traffic. Very busy. It's dark. Addams family decor (black blinds with dark blue floors). Don't recommend. Unless that's your thing. Then go for it.
