My daughters and I had a great time riding through Cape May and on the concrete walkway on the beach! Bikes were in good shape. Not sure if they have other types, but there were the classic bikes, no gears, coaster (pedal) brakes. Cape May is very flat so it's fine to have no gears. They have baskets to attach to the front of the bike. I'd recommend one to carry your stuff. If you get the chance, grab a bike and go for a nice bike ride as the sun is setting on the bay. What a great deal. We rented for the entire day. It was 30 dollars. 9 am to 6 pm. Bike lock included. We biked everywhere. It was great beachside cape may doesn't have a lot of hill. I highly recommend yawing this as a way to look around. read more

I've been to Cape May for my past two summer vacations, and always make sure to rent a bike. The city is too pretty and friendly for driving, but is rather spread out. Read: It's damn bike conducive, and rather than haul my mountain bike six hours from Pittsburgh, I'll just rent one instead. Though I haven't tried any bike shop besides Shields, I've never had a reason to. The staff is quite friendly, the weekly rental fee is so low it's almost like getting the bike for free, and the bikes have always been quality. They're simply single-speed rental bikes, and won't win you the Tour de France, but they're adequate. I've exchanged bikes with them mid-week without issue (girlfriend's bike became difficult to pedal) and they let us drop them off on a rack in the back after close, saving us an early-morning bike ride on our day of departure. Overall, they're good, helpful, and friendly. I'd definitely recommend them. read more

If you're in Cape May and want to ride around and see the beautiful homes, rent a bike at Shields. I recently rented a bike for just an hour, and they only charged $5. The bikes are not $1000 bikes, but they are certainly decent and adequate to just pedal around the town. Considering that everyone from little kids to grandma walks in their door every day, the employees are friendly and helpful. Shields, keep up the good work! read more

All the equipment you need is also provided (e.g. helmet and locks). Fun time! Simple, nice, thorough. I called before I went and explained I just wanted to take my 4 year old son who was still in training wheels at home, they were very helpful asking how much my son weighed, and suggesting a surry "bike with steering wheel" might be more simple. Once we arrived they were great! I told them I called and they went further on telling my why they DIDNT suggest the bike with the seat in the back more of the length of the 40 lb. child not the weight. Once we chose a helmet "which the gentleman put on my son, promising not to pinch him" LOL we hopped in our "surry" and the gentleman explained what to do, as in using the rules of the road like a vehicle and such- great job! Thank you shields! We will be back next year! I also understand the vacation crowd can get a little pretentious, it's a bike shop off of beach ave in cape May people, get over yourselves - did you ask when they would pick the bikes up? Or did you call before you left? Doesn't seem like it and it doesn't seem fair to give bad reviews without giving yourself a poor one. Simple, accommodating bike rentals in Cape May. Affordable pricing (~$10 a day for bikes), and the owner will help you out with the price if you're renting for a big group. They offer surreys, tandems and beach cruisers. They'll give you all the locks, helmets and baskets you need. Friendly staff, they also offer delivery for free. The only downside is they're CASH ONLY. Which is fine for a few bikes, but if you're renting a number of bikes for a number of days, it can be a hassle to take out that much cash. read more

We showed up to rent a tandem bike, but after a ride around the block, we changed our mind. They cheerfully let us trade for two single cruisers and refunded the difference, adjusted our seats, switched the basket from the old bike to the new one, and waved us off again. We never felt like we were a bother. The $10 per day rate is a great value and I really appreciate that the basket, lock, and helmet were included if wanted - I can imagine a similar place getting you in the door then charging extra for these. I just have the most unprofessional conversation with the older woman that works in the bike shop. When I tried to explain to her I wanted to return the bike early she rudely refused and started to argue with me and declare that I did not know how to ride a bike. How embarrassing for her. I do not recommend this bike shop -there are others in Cape May that are much more accommodating. read more

Be sure if you want to rent from them that you are prepared to do their administrative work for them. I rented bikes from them for the week, had them delivered to the rented beach house on Saturday when we arrived at the house, and paid the delivery guy for the bikes for the week. Upon checking out of the house the following Saturday (which by most people's accounts would be a week later) I called just to let them know we left and that the bikes were in the back of the house. I was greeted with a huff and a puff asking if I arranged a pick up. I said I hadn't as I wasn't made aware that I had to but also that because the bikes were paid for the week, the assumption was they'd be picked up a week later. I was told he had 30 pick ups to make and asked if I could bring the bikes to him, something that I was not able to do. Is it difficult to have some kind of tracking system as to know what bikes are being delivered and picked up on various days? Seems like a simple thing to me.. When you deliver a bike have the customer initial the date to be picked up. These are bike deliveries not limo services for airports. read more

I am blown away by how wonderful this facility is! My husband and I rented bikes for a trip out to the lighthouse. The weather went south so we turned back and returned the bikes after only about 30 min. The owners felt bad and offered us a rain check. Sadly, we were only in town for that one day so didn't take the offer. A few weeks later, our check was returned to us in the mail, saying that they didn't feel right keeping our money. We were astonished! It was not their fault it began raining but I'm so taken aback by their honest business practices.
