Nice little place to get a drink with friends. We wanted to end the evening with a beverage and a dessert, and Shindigs was close by so we stopped in. This place serves real food because it's a restaurant, but I honestly could not tell you anything about the restaurant menu. I was only looking at the cocktail and dessert menu! They only had four desserts available when I was there. I chose the lemon cake with blueberry sauce, which wasn't on the menu but was a special. Yum! I love citrus and blueberries, and this hit that light and sweet spot. Someone at my table got the Apple Dapple, a slice of apple cake which is served with vanilla ice cream and drizzled with caramel. That dessert was good, too. I usually would have just ordered a glass of wine, but Shindig isn't really a wine place, so I got an Old Fashioned. They do cocktails and beer here, mostly. First of all it's a small town. There's not a lot of choices for food. What a hidden gem. The food was amazing. We had the fried string beans. They are fried in house made batter and served with a hot honey drizzle and a side of house made ranch. YUM! Then we shared a chicken frizzled chicken. My only wish is I could have eaten more. The only good thing I really have to say about the place is the waiter was fantastic but the atmosphere is busy and loud, I know a lot of people like multiple TV's and noise but it is not what I like when going out to eat. The food was over priced and not any better than you can get at most cafes. The first thing I noticed, walking into shindigs was the ambience, everything about this bar is jaw dropping if you are into architectures, construction, or design... I sat at the bar and spoke with the bartender Alyssa who was a great host. She gave us a tour of the whole bar when she saw how in awe we were. I had the brisket burger the first day and thought it was very good . I liked this place so much that we went back for lunch the second day we were in town. I've been coming here for years and my opinion shifts on Shindigs from year to year. First, the atmosphere is always fun. Today, the food is good! The smoked meatloaf is always good. The shrooms are amazing. Some years the carrots are great others, not so much. Today, Now, the carrots are good again. The red jacket mashed potatoes are just right. The service is good today... the waiter is easy on the eyes. Four stars today. The restaurant is a bit cold and we are sitting under a vent and I'm not a fan of country music. Empty drinks? We had to summon her to get another. At least she was pleasantly oblivious. Took 30 minutes to get a chicken sandwich and a cup of soup that was already made. For the wait, the food was ok, but cold. Unfortunately I didn't have time to ask for it to be heated up. Don't bother. If you have time, just head a few minutes north to Derby or Wichita. The ambiance is great the service is okay, but the food is severely lacking. My husband ordered the steak medallions, mashed potatoes, and green beans while I just got a hamburger. My burger had a very funky taste, like maybe the grill needed cleaned. My husband's medallions were cooked well done, medium, and the last one was rare. Service was quick and friendly and our waitress was really thoughtful and engaged in our experience. Apple walnut salad was really good, but apples are soaked in lemon to avoid browning which may not be everyone's jam. The wings were really good with the boom boom sauce, better wings that some bigger towns. Fried Okra was also good. Baked potato was just ok. Fruit bowl wasn't very good, but maybe that's on me for ordering fruit in what feels like the middle of nowhere. Really feels like the beef, burgers and cuts of steak will probably be the best. From our arrival at the Hostess' station to our exit the experience was very poor. Despite offering multiple upper-end burger options the kitchen is unable to cook anywhere near to order. A small diameter, tapered edge patty was overcooked at least two levels not once, but twice. What should have been an attractive layer of string fries resembled grill scrapings, and a promise of grilled onions was a sad small clump of macerated onion. The summoned Manager, with a dirty white (?) towel hanging from one pocket, unapologetically interrogated us as if it was our job to diagnose and rectify finger pointing in their business. She then gruffly asked if we wanted her to remove the refused items from our tab. Not even an iced tea (served in the smallest of jars) was comped. We left cash for my wife's salad on the table and departed, absolutely never to return. This "restaurant" seemingly went out of its way to earn a place on our Top 3 Worst list. read more

Let's cut to the chase....The food was not bad. It wasn't off the wall super but at least the steak was of higher quality for the price, cook right, and had flavor. Green beans, too much garlic. Loaded Potato lacked something, but wasn't horrible. The tea was good. Cut back on the garlic folks. It is a great flavor booster, but to drown it in garlic takes so much away. The front desk seemed lost. Didn't offer us a booth, which would have been nice. The hard chairs in the middle of the floor are a bit uncomfortable for older folks. But our waitress, name began with a B, was pleasant and accommodating, Not sure she was worth $17.00 bucks in tips, but that seems to be the going racket anymore no matter where you go. She openly presented ticket with the 20% option selected, but that could be a company thing too. It seems to be common practice. We need to get real with the tipping people. She provided decent service for the trips she made. Finally, the ambiance...LOUD! LOUD! LOUD! Did you hear that? Nope, I didn't either, why don't you scream it at me again. May be I'll hear it then. Look, I get it. Idiots love their loud music, screaming across the table to smack their food down and have a sort of stupid conversation about how woke they are. But come on, this is ridiculous. It was so loud we all got headaches from the blaring music, groups of idiots all standing around for nearly an hour screaming at each other. It ruined the entire meal. In fact, the noise alone will be the reason we will not refer others or return ourselves. It is not enjoyable for folks to have to yell just trying to talk over dinner. I know, it ain't for talking, it's for eating. But seriously, this place is just stupid silly with how loud it is in there. Other than that, it is pretty slick and seemed clean until the dust started falling from the ceiling from folks upstairs bouncing around and moving table. Upon entering, we waiting 10 minutes before the young man at the front talked to us. He was busy and kept leaving his station to (I'm assuming) seat a few in front of us and check on others. However, he was there several times seemingly not doing anything until he looked up and asked, "How many?" My expectations are that a greeter should be more prompt than this, but he may have been new and busy. As we were taken to our seats, the ambience stood out. This is a two-story restaurant dedicated to the rail system, and they have done an excellent job of incorporating themes and motifs into the building. On visuals alone, I'd give this an A+. We were told our server would be right with us. 1) You could tell they were short staffed, and 2) you could tell the servers were busy. There was a lot of activity in the city when we were there this day, so more than likely they had more than just the locals visiting the restaurant. It took an unusually long time for our server to get to our table. When she finally got there, we were able to put our order in WITH our drinks as we'd already had a moment to review the menu. Plus we had reviewed it online. I ordered the Not Yo Momma's Meatloaf. She asked if I wanted mashed potatoes & gravy along with carrots. I asked if it was extra, and she said no. My guest ordered the Hangover burger and was very pleased. Solid flavor, presented well, and he was full when finished. The meatloaf? That's another story. I was told it was smoked and would be different. The smoky flavor is very good, but this is a LARGE piece of meatloaf. By the time I got to the end of it, it was just too much smoke to be honest. This is probably a better sized piece to be shared and, in my opinion, I'd rather have paid half of what I did and just bring me less food. But here's the deal - it was dry! Several times while eating it I wished it WAS my momma's meatloaf. She at least put ketchup on it, which made it moist. This one could definitely have used...something. I'm assuming the male who visited our table and brought our food was either a manager. When asked if he could bring us anything else, we replied with everything our server DIDN'T bring us: * Refills * Straws * Salt & Pepper * Utensils * Napkins He graciously brought us all of that, but it was apparent that our server hadn't asked, thought about, or brought us any of it. We had to ask for every refill. It was never a proactive approach by the server. This frustrates me at ANY restaurant and can often dictate the tip amount. I asked for Dt Dr Pepper and my guest asked for sweet tea. On the third request for refills, I noticed my drink was Coke. When I mentioned that my guest said, "Yeah, this is the first SWEET tea I've received. The others were not." So she consistently was getting the drinks incorrect when filling them. There were more flies around my table and meal than I would prefer. It was relatively cool outside and flies like the warmth of a window. But I would rather have not had that to deal with. Then we checked out. The server stands right at your table when you tip. I didn't like that. The tip defaulted to 15%, 18% or 20%. She wasn't worth that (but I did tip 16%). I noticed my bill was little higher than expected, so I inquired with the young man up front as we left. He checked with management, and they told him it was because the drinks were $3 ($3!) and because of the gravy on my potatoes. Soft drinks do NOT cost that much even if they are served with disposable cups (they were glass jars). But the gravy was a dollar more. Yes, only a dollar. The young man said, "There's nothing we can do about it per the manager." I asked to speak to the manager, and when she came up she said, "The server should have told you it was extra. My apologies if she did not." I told her that I couldn't care less about a dollar - it was the principle. She acknowledged, apologized again, but did nothing. Again - I don't care about a buck. But read the room and recognize that I'm not a local. And that I probably would be writing a review. And that others would see it. The online menu showed by meal to be $14. On the menu in the restaurant it was $18. I was charged $19. Overall the staff was courteous - just not attentive. The male manager was great (who delivered our requested items). The server was VERY nice - just didn't fulfil her obligations. The young man at the front was kind - just not paying attention. And the female manager at the bar was well-mannered - just dropped the ball. Improve on all of these things and I might be back. I wouldn't go out of my way from Wichita to get to this place, but I might try it again if I'm in town - and I will be back in town at some point. There are places that are 30-60 minutes from Wichita that are worth the drive for the food - this is not one of them. read more

Huge portions but also tender steaks/chicken, homemade potatoes, & creamy flavorful gravy.
