This music academy is the best!!!! They are so in tune to my kids needs and best thing is they care! They also come to my house!!!! I couldn't have music lessons with them if they didn't come to the house. I have too many other obligations, so this makes it so easy. Plus, they take the Florida Step Up Scholarship!!! read more

We absolutely love Shining Star Music Academy! The teachers are skilled and enthusiastic. The director and the staff are always quick to answer any questions. It has been an excellent experience having them teach our children the piano and guitar! read more

Like many, I am a very busy mom. With Shining Star having the ability to offer in-home lessons, it's one less thing I have to schedule drive time for. Katrina is very accommodating when schedules don't go as planned and Shining Star offers virtual lessons if in person is not an option. Regular in-home lessons allows for consistent growth for both my daughter's playing skills. Hearing my kids play an instrument I've always wished I could play makes me very proud. read more

I'm a middle-aged, long-time instrumentalist who decided to try singing as something new. I've studied vocals with Katrina for two years now and am thrilled with the progress I've made during that time. I went from refusing to ever sing in public to receiving compliments from strangers during live performances. I've studied music my entire life with numerous teachers, and based on that experience can give my highest recommendation to Shining Star. read more

Katrina is fantastic! She knows how to cater to her students and all different skill levels and personalities. She is extremely knowledgeable in all ways of teaching piano and finds ways to motivate her students. read more

History

Established in 2014.

Our Director, Katrina Degel, began teaching in the Gainesville area in 2014, and has since expanded - building a team of amazing teachers to go to student's homes.

Meet the Business Owner: Katrina D.

Katrina Degel is a graduate of Berklee College of Music with a B.A. Degree in Music, as well as NYU Steinhardt with a M.A. Degree in Music. She sings, plays piano and guitar, composes, and produces/masters audio. Katrina performs regularly in Gainesville, teaches and hosts several performances with students and local musicians each year.

I bought a Banjo from him some time ago and have to say it was a great instrument at a terrific price! My son is currently taking guitar lessons and it is going really well. He is progressing rapidly and enjoying it thoroughly. The Good: its a local shop and it makes you feel good to support them. The people are cool and the products / repairs are great. Leon is always interesting to talk with and he has comfortable seating in the store. They also have a cool music store feel and parking is pretty good right out front. The Bad: The hours are a little restrictive, but they work out. The Ugly: There is no ugly! Cool folks, great lessons, and interesting location. We dig it! And will continue to come here.

However when I got there initially I was told to take a seat and they would call me in to take my exam. I sat and waited for thirty minutes before I finally went up and reminded them I was there and they took me back. I didn't really mind because it was a practice round, but if that had been my real test date it would not have helped my nerves! The computer and the station I took the actual test on was dirty and was distracting while taking the test. There was black hairs randomly on the screen and where I was supposed to place my ID which grossed me out. Overall for a testing center it was fine, but they could defiantly improve their cleaning practices!

This place is huge--probably the largest number of vendors I've seen in an antique mall. Some vendors are very reasonably priced, while others are definitely on the higher side, so it's a bit of a mixed bag. Anyway, I got a flat and could not change the tire. I went to three auto parts places and bought the size (thin-walled socket) that would fit in there. None of them worked!! A friend suggested Repurpose/Reuse spot. I went in there, and explained it to the attendant. He found a box of mismatched sockets, and I bought two of them FOR A DOLLAR EACH!! It worked!! The only reason I come here is for the movie theater, which is nice. The restaurants are okay, but the only one truly worth checking out is Spurrier's. The whole place just feels like it's missing something--there's no real soul, no diversity, and not enough retail options to make it a true shopping destination. If you're looking for a place to stroll or see a show, it does the job. But if you're expecting a shopping and entertainment hub like Orlando, you might be disappointed.

We started piano lessons in August with Shining Star - it's awesome so far!! I have a 6 year old and a 4 year old, and they both are learning so much - it's really cool to watch and help them practice. Katrina is awesome - she came to the house to do the initial assessment, and the kids loved her. My six year old wrote a song with her (really simple song) the first day and he was thrilled! She also was really flexible with my 4 year old, and we started her knowing she might have to switch to shorter lessons or hold off a few months - but it seems to be going well so far. Our teacher, Alexia, is awesome, too! The kids adore her, and she is really great with them. They especially love the 'warm ups' where she plays with them and they can play whatever they want - it's super cute. I should say, too, that our schedule was not easy to work with - my husband and I both work full time, and Katrina and Alexia were able to do our first preference of time - which makes our lives so much easier. I'm so excited to have my kids in lessons with such great teachers!! read more
