If we had never eaten here before, today's experience would have been one and done. After spending Spring Break camping at Three Island Crossing and Bruneau Dunes State Park, we stopped at Shiok on our way home to Boise for a late lunch. The vibe from the waitress told us she didn't want to be there. We were barely greeted and shown a table to sit down at. We barely had seen the menu when she came by and asked us about drinks and appetizers. We asked for two glasses of ice tea and said we needed more time to look at the menu. When she came back to take our order, we still hadn't received our ice teas. She even brought us our cups of soup before the teas. Since we weren't provided water when we sat down, we waited 15 minutes to get the teas. My wife ordered a sweet and sour chicken dish and I ordered Kung pan chicken. When they arrived, they looked almost identical: deep-fried chicken in a sweet sauce. Only Kristy's dish had some slices of bell pepper, while mine had a piece of raw broccoli and some dried chiles. Tasting mine, it was definitely sweet and sour. When the waitress came around I asked if that dish was really Kung pao chicken and she assured me it was. I said the sauce was sweet and the chicken was deep-fried and was unlike any Kung pan chicken I'd ever had. She told me she would trade it out, although I was unsure what she was going to replace it with, since she had insisted that what I had received truly was Kung pao chicken. She returned a few minutes later and said the chef had made a mistake and was making the correct dish for me. It came out and was fine. But what bothered me is the server just assumed she had brought me the proper dish to begin with. If she had simply looked at it and agreed it looked nearly identical to Kristy's sweet and sour dish, she would have easily concluded a mistake had been made. Which I would have understood. Instead, she didn't believe my explanation of why it was the wrong dish. If I was the chef in the kitchen, I would have brought the corrected dish out to the customer myself and apologized personally. He took the easy way out by putting it on his waitress. This is a restaurant we love and have spoken to the owner before. We will go there again, but this was a very disappointing experience. read more

My daughter and I had lunch here today. The food was so fresh and hot. We ordered the sampler appetizer plate which had 4 Spring Rolls, 4 Crab Rangoon, 4 Potstickers, and 4 Barbecue Pork. All so delicious. My daughter ordered the Sweet and Sour Chicken with Jasmin Rice and I had the Chicken LoMien. We also had the Hot and Sour soup. Everything was so fresh tasting, with fresh vegetables. The servings were huge and we ended up taking home a lot of food. The service was fast and our server was so friendly. The menu is also like a book. So many things to pick from. If you enjoy Chinese/American food I highly recommend this wonderful restaurant. We will certainly be back again. read more

Shiok really is a ridiculously delicious hidden desert gem! You would drive past it if you didn't know it was there! I'm in town for a few weeks and received a $5 off voucher from my hotel. I came in for lunch and noticed it was a popular and frequent spot for a lot of the military. You can tell from the decor with the appreciation plaques and memorabilia that Shiok is a loved restaurant within the community. Our waitress was super friendly and took our orders right away. I honestly wasn't expecting much for an Asian restaurant in the middle of nowhere but I was pleasantly surprised and the lunch special is such a great deal! Like seriously, what culinary devil did they sell thier souls too to be able to pull off such magical food for such an unbelievable price.. The prefect blend of spice and sweet,this food is what I'd ask for of I had a last meal request. The General Tso chicken is beyond prefect. (Is that possible?) We live in Boise and have been driving through Mountain Home many times on road trips and never heard of this restaurant before but so glad I googled the near by Asian restaurants and decided to give this place a try. It's a little far away from the main town but so worth the drive. The food was amazing, service was excellent, we ordered bubble tea, some noddle dishes and seafood plates. Food was freshly prepared, with good quality and quantity worth your money. What makes this place unique is the fact that it's the only Singaporean restaurant within a 50-mile radius. It also seems like it's the only restaurant within a 10-mile radius. It's a welcoming oddity, really, given my destination is the Air Force Base nearby. SIL decided to have her birthday dinner here. It really is an unassuming place - nothing flashy or fancy. A few tables were occupied as our party of 8 walked in. I didn't really think that surprising considering it is the only eatery around here. We were seated and given the menus immediately. Big Bro, SIL, GodNephew and wife have been here, so they had a few recommendations. The rest I ordered out of curiosity. CALAMARI: Recommended as it should be. Good amount of seasoning and batter. It didn't need dip. It stood out perfect all on its own. This plate was clean almost in a heartbeat. SEAFOOD FISH MAW SOUP. Like the calamari, this was also recommended. I'm most likely going to skip it next time, though. It fell short with flavor and seasoning. It was so bland it was almost difficult to eat without soy sauce (which we had to ask for. For an Asian spot, this should be on the table already.) Barely saw any crabmeat or scallops either, so this is a thumbs down. MU SHU PORK: I guess I've been spoiled at other Chinese restaurants where the servers would do all the wrapping for you. But since this is a "WHEN IN ROME" moment, I didn't mind doing all that myself. The pork strips were sautéed, seasoned and prepped well. Lots of flavor, really tasty. The wrap is nothing more than a tortilla (on the contrary to the "Mu Shu" wrappers they claim them to be.) Despite that, though, I would still recommend it. TIP: Add a hint of Hoisin sauce before each bite and the overall taste gets elevated to a better level. SALT AND PEPPER PORK CHOP: Skip this. It is NOTHING like it should be. It really is just a thinly sliced pork chop deep fried until tough. Some of the pieces were fried so hard, they were inedible. Not recommended, not recommending. BEEF AND BROCCOLI: Nothing special. Mediocre at best, but delicious. SIZZLING BEEF WITH BLACK PEPPER SAUCE: Big Bro has had this and liked it, hence the recommendation. It wasn't bad! The sizzling part was just for show, but the seasoning and flavor is on point for this meat. It was also prepped tender. Nothing wrong with this. Recommended and recommending. SALTED FISH AND FRIED RICE: The only turn-off for me on this are the peas and carrots. That's a personal preference, I know. It's just I feel peas and carrots are just fillers.) The aroma and taste of the fish wasn't strong at all which kind downgraded the dish because that's what I expected to come through. Mediocre at best. HOUSE SPECIAL SEAFOOD NOODLES WITH XO SAUCE: Recommended and I would also recommend. They didn't skimp on the seafood. But what makes this dish is the sauce (it really is special.) There's a good kick in the end (but not so bad that it's unbearable) which gives this plate its specific and unique character. FOOD: 3.5. It's a hit and miss for a lot of their dishes. SERVICE: 3. There was only one server working the entire floor which made it difficult to flag her. She was being pulled 3-4 different ways at any given time. I was told it's always like that. VALUE: 3.5. Better than average. PARKING: Rocky and plenty. Not an issue. OVERALL: 3.25. Everything was, of course, made to order. That is always a plus. Another item I'm recommending: mango sweet tea. BOMB. Delicious? Sure. "Ridiculously" delicious? Not so much. Like I said, it's a hit and miss overall. (We came back to try their Thai milk bubble tea but was told no bubble teas were available. The owner is the only one who makes it and he happens to be in Singapore. I hope he's researching more eats to add on to his menu!) It was good enough for me to consider a come back should I find myself around here again. They do have a pretty good selection of dishes I'm still curious about. Might be awhile, though, if at all, since I'm from nowhere around here. Will update once a second visit pushes through. read more

Found this little Gem searching for a place to have lunch on a scenic road trip drive on Mother's Day. First of all the name stating "Ridiculously Delicious" in the name caught my eye. Having now lived in the Boise area for 5 years we have yet to find a good Chinese (Asian) food restaurant. The website and reviews looked good so I made a couple of calls to make sure they were open on Sunday for Mother's Day. We arrived a little after noon and the place didn't look very busy by the car count. We were greeted at the door and quickly seated with a complimentary Mother's Day rose for my wife. The place is very clean inside and the staff was very attentive and polite. We ordered the Calamari appetizer and it was very tasty. The menu did not disappoint. Our main dishes were the Walnut honey dish, Mongolian beef dish and the House special seafood XO dish. They were all fantastic!!! I'm glad we had some leftover for later. This is hands down the best Asian food we have had in Idaho. The place began to have many more patrons entering as we were having our appetizer and by the time we left the parking lot was much fuller. I wish this place was closer to home, but we will certainly have it on our list of places to eat should we ever get anywhere near it. Keep up the good work Shiok. read more

Even though it's an hour drive from Boise, we visit this restaurant at least a few times a year. We have no real authentic Chinese restaurants in Boise, and this place is well worth the drive. The service is always great, and the food is always wonderful and authentic. We've tried many dishes on our visits there and have never been disappointed. Anything you order will be delicious. And if you like Sweet and Sour Soup, theirs is the best anywhere. The restaurant is small, so reservations are a good idea. We have FOUND our place for the perfect vegan meal close to home! Shiok offered some yummy appetizers and fresh veggie dishes. We were hungry so we ordered too much, but that's ok. The leftovers reheated perfectly the next day. The service was friendly and helpful. Customers were spaced out due to COVID and surfaces were cleaned right after use! Ordered Wor Wonton Soup, they do not mix the vegetables and meat in the soup, but oh my goodness when I had it I could see why the veggies and shrimp and wontons are cooked perfectly, adding them to the hot broth for a go order would overcook and make soggy. I highly recommend this soup. We also ordered the General Tso Chicken, in future I will request the sauce separate so the chicken doesn't get soggy from the sauce, we also got the Shiok! Went here with my parents the night before Thanksgiving. I've been here twice before when visiting and the food has always been tasty. This last time, the rice wasn't properly cooked. My dad and I both had some uncooked pieces in our bowl. Also, as you can see by my photo, there was a full mop bucket within view during the entire meal. My wife was in the mood for some Chinese food and being from out of town, we had no ideas of where to go. I saw this place on Yelp and thought we'd give it a try. We pulled into a deserted parking lot and looked at each other with this "oh well" look. We know if we were driving by, we would have never stopped. We walked in to an empty restaurant but was greeted by the owner. We had no idea what to order and were feeling daring so I just let the owner select the side dishes for us. We started with an appetizer of calamari with spicy garlic pepper sauce which was really good. Then an order of their signature dish of walnut shrimp with broccoli and an order of XO Seafood Noodle. On 9/17/20, KM and I visited SHIOK! in Mountain Home. The restaurant was open and in 2012 by Robin and Caroline Tan, but Caroline is credited as the creator. Robin Tan is a retired Republic of Singapore Air Force Major who spent time at Mountain Home Air Force Base and decided to retire there.As a result, the restaurant is full of military memorabilia. Having moved from Singapore, Caroline felt Mountain Home lacked a great authentic Asian restaurant. In her opinion, even the best Asian restaurants in Boise were a far cry from those available in cities like Los Angeles and Las Vegas. She took it upon herself to remedy that. SHIOK! is located close to Mountain Home Air Force Base. It has won many awards, some of which you will see upon entering the restaurant. SHIOK! Is native Malay slang that is commonly used in Singapore to express pleasure, happiness and satisfaction. It is synonymous with "Awesome!", "Wonderful!" or simply Ridiculously Delicious! For beverages, we chose Bubble aka Boba Tea. We both got the Original Milk Bubble tea ($4.50), which was excellent! We started with an appetizer of Calamari with Spicy Salt, Garlic and Pepper ($10.95), which came with a side of sweet chili dipping sauce. It was excellent! It was a generous portion of fresh calamari that was well seasoned. The salt/garlic/pepper flavor of the calamari was enhanced by the sweet dipping sauce. A lot of reviews mention this particular appetizer and I understand why. If you like calamari, this is a must try dish. Next up, we tried the Laksa Curry Noodle ($14.95). Laksa is to Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Southern Thailand, what Pho is to Vietnam, albeit much heartier. On the menu, it is described as "Famous Singapore Curry Noodle. Rich and spicy curry broth served over lo mein or vermicelli noodles, topped with chicken, shrimp, calamari and bean sprouts. They also offer Laksa Goreng, which is a stirfried vermicelli version of this dish. I have had Malaysian Laksa before, but this was my first time trying Singaporean Laksa. There is a notable difference between the two. Malaysian Laksa tends to have a bit of a sour flavor, while the Singaporean version is more savory/sweet. The Malaysian versions I have had also had more coconut milk and a few additional ingredients/garnishes, including a soft cooked egg that was cut in half and laid on top of the rich broth. I think I prefer the Malaysian version of Laksa but I enjoyed this one very much. We tried the Singapore Golden Fried Rice ($13.95). It is described as "King of Fried Rice! Wow fried rice cooked to perfection with fresh crab meat, shrimp, chicken, salted fish, bean sprouts, lots of egg, with a hint of garlic and ginger." This was a new dish for both of us. We thought it was excellent! We tried the House Special Seafood Noodle in XO Sauce ($14.95). It is described as "Our all-time favorite! Fine egg noodles stirfried with slightly spicy house XO topped with egg seafood galore. Must try!" XO sauce is a spicy seafood sauce that originated from Hong Kong. It has a umami flavor.We both thought it was excellent! This was our favorite of the noodle dishes. We tried the Honey-Glazed Walnut Shrimp ($15.95), which is a signature dish. It is described as "Lightly battered fried shrimp tossed in a special cream sauce and topped with honey glazed walnuts. Served on a bed of broccoli. This is a popular dish that you will find in lots of restaurants. I have never tried it before but KM has tried it many times. I enjoyed it. KM thought it was excellent in compared to all of the different version she has tried. We tried the Singapore Char Kway Teow ($13.95). It is described as "most popular noodle dish in Singapore. Combination of flat rice noodles and Yakisoba noodles stir-fried with Shiok! sweet soy sauce, Topped with shrimp, calamari, Chinese sausage, egg and bean sprouts. Ask for extra chili for that sweet zesty taste! " I have had this dish before in Singapore but it was many years ago. I have most more recently had a similar dish in Malaysia call Hokkien noodles, which I prefer because the soy sauce that was used was not sweet. It was still very good. I was looking forward to trying their signature dessert, Durian Brulé, but desserts are not currently on the menu. They are anticipated to return when Robin Tan, who is currently in Singapore, returns to the US. I have had fresh Durian before, but never in a Brulé. I look forward to trying this innovative dessert in the future. Dining at SHIOK! was an adventure and a great experience. It is indeed, Ridiculously Delicious! In addition to having an extensive menu, full of wonderful dishes, we received excellent service from Michaela. Having worked there for six years, Michaela knows the menu exceptionally well. She was incredibly helpful in answering all of our questions. All of our dishes were prepared from scratch and served promptly. We couldn't have asked for a better first time experience. I like to go here once a week just to give my body a break from the food at the DFAC. The food at Shiok is actually intended for human consumption unlike the DFAC food and it tastes good too! They also never run out of ketchup (unlike the DFAC). It's a gem in Mountain Home. It is not near the center of the town, you have to drive 9 miles away and it is on the side of 65-mile-an-hour road. However, GPS knows exactly where it is and thanks for the building pictures posted here. The place is clean, lots of tables, small and long for parties. Friendly owner and assistant, helpful answering our questions, and fast service. Food was good, quick to arrive, and the best part was Durian Brûlée! I'm skeptical of a lot of 5 star reviews, but in this case if it were possible I would have given it a perfect 10.
