He pointed me towards this place.... We each bought a roll and then got in the car and headed out. I used the title because it has become much harder to find and enjoy an honest donut that isn't pre-made by machine and then just cooked. Most grocery stores, well let's be honest ALL of them where I live have basically put the small actual bakeries out of business and traditional places like Crispy Cream and Duncan are not even shells of themselves. Shipley surprised me and I was glad for it. On my way home, a couple of days later, I once again stopped for 2 this time. I had a white cream-filled one and also an apple fritter. ONE thing to be aware of, is they charge extra if you use a card rather than cash. I had a debit card which does not have a surcharge but they added the credit card charge regardless......I felt this was a irritation about the debit card.

Was disappointed, because I used to have Daylight frequently when lived close to one. Much like Crispy Cream and Duncan and many restaurants it has moved from very good to blah and at best average. Although to be fair with so many corporate locations the mediun has moved downwards. The roll was a 4 on a scale of 1 to 10. The coffee was OK, but as I was writing this I realized didn't consider the coffee, so it was good enough to notice it in a bad way, but not good enough to notice as something to drive to.

No receipt paper, no fluid to wash your windows, no paper towels to wipe your hands or oil dipstick. When you walk in to tell them you need your receipt, they look at you like "well if I HAVE to." I've asked them several times about the receipt paper and it's a different excuse every time. Once I told them nothing outside was stocked and the reply from the pretty black girl was "is that all sir?". Yep. That's all. Time to find another store to fill up at I guess.

The smells and the menu, it was like stepping into a time machine. I ordered my old go-to: a meat and potato burrito and a pack of Olés. One bite and I was back in high school, sitting with friends, laughing over cheap tacos and crumpled napkins. (Unfortunately they are not cheap like they used to be) The food tasted just as I remembered. The service was fast, the staff welcoming, and the place spotless. They were decently fast at giving us our order after placing it. I was surprised to see a taco that wasn't broken at the bottom so points for that! Nothing really stood out; their hot sauce tasted kinda like Franks. Just seemed like a little different flavor than Taco Bell, but nothing that really sat them apart. I think it just comes down to where you grew up and if Taco John's was closer than Taco Bell to you.. I heard their breakfast was good; I'll have to try it, but I think I'd still stick with Taco Bell.
