Campsite 22 is a double site. We were a group of 9 and it fit 5 tents comfortably (2 large family size, 2 medium, 1 small), and could have still fit another 2 tents. The sight had 2 picnic tables, 2 grills, and 1 fire pit. The bathroom was a close walk (under a minute) but not in view from the site. There was 2 water stations near, 1 being at the bathroom. All the bathrooms were very clean and maintained. The lake was less than a 5 minute walk from the campsite and there were multiple bathrooms on the way. We enjoyed a few hours at the lake each day. It was very clean and pretty. Bring water shoes as it's mostly rocks underneath. Everyone played in the water. We had floaties and tossed a football. Fortunately none of us got stung by the occasional wasp that came around every time we cooked but we did get bit a lot by the mosquitoes even though we wore repellent. We brought a netted canopy we put right over the picnic table and ate inside of it. This site had a good portion of shade with the sun draping in through the tall trees. We were able to enjoy most of the day without having to worry about sunscreen unless we went down to the water. Campsites are close together but we stayed during the week days following Labor Day weekend and only had a couple other campers who were not in view. Had we stayed during the weekend there definitely would had been people at the site right next to us very close in view and no doubt could hear everything. For that reason I would definitely not stay at this campground during a busy holiday weekend like Labor Day. Between the 9 of us we had 4 different cell providers and none of got service at all, not even walking around or at the lake. It was very nice to spend time with no one on their phones. The nearest store is about a 30 min drive. I wouldn't want to drive there at night as there's no light and lots of turns. Our site allowed 4 cars, we had 3. It was an amazing family camping trip and we will definitely go back and book site 22 again.

I have been camping here since I was little! It is still such a great campground. The campsites are very well maintained and the camp hosts that we have had these last few trips this summer have been awesome. We have a few more trips planned this year here and we are definitely looking forward to it!

We stayed here in late June and had a wonderful camping experience. The campground was very clean. When we arrived our campsite had been raked and the fire pit cleaned out by the campground hosts. We did not experience any problems with noisy campers, loud radios, etc. The campground hosts cleaned the restrooms at least twice a day and were very friendly. The lake is walking distance from the campground and there is a very good paved path that leads down to the waterline making it easy to get your gear down to the water. The surface temperature of the lake was in the 70s and very comfortable to swim in. Of the two campgrounds on the lake (Shirttail and Giant Gamp), this was the quieter of the two. We camped here in a 38' motorhome and found the paved sites, roads and ample water connections adequate. If camping here in a large RV like ours, I recommend sites 3, 4, 5, 6, 22, 25, 29, 30 all of which are relatively level.

Ask the Community - Shirttail Creek

Is it still run by the same couple everyone appears to be upset over? Is there reception?

I believe it is but I didn't have a bad experience at all. No reception

Are there trees big enough to tie a hammock to at the campground?

I want to say yes. I would guess it depends on the site but there are lots of trees

Does anyone know if site 30 has one or two bear boxes?

I do not know about 30. But if it's any indicator, site 22 which was one of the big multi-family sites had two picnic tables and one bear box.

In the middle of everything but still close to two bathrooms, three if you don't mind walking past the camp host.

Great man-made lake that is around 4 miles to go all the way around, half of the path is paved so bike appropriate and good for jogging. When we went a portion of the trail was washed out and closed off but we were able to bypass it anyways with our dogs. Trail can start at the day use park then keeps going through the camp sites till you make the full circle. We regretted not bringing our swimsuits. We reserved campsite #5. All the campsites are all pretty secluded and spacious, but when we passed by #10 we were jealous in that it was the end of the culdesac and walkable to the lake and very secluded. Dog friendly. Vault toilets (no lights, bring headlamps). They have a potable water faucet. I thought the fire pits were well maintained. If you are bringing a RV/Trailer and coming from the South, make sure to take the Forest Hill route (slower route when it shows up on Google Maps). It is much better maintained and spacious. On our way up we went the quicker route and had no trouble as we just had one truck but the trailer in front of couldn't make a sharp turn and was stuck and actually damaged a portion of it, we were able to guide it through thankfully but go at your own risk.

Covid brought hordes of people many disrespecting nature. Ok I get it. You can't go on your cruise. But what I found today devastated me. Yes they took down infested trees a few years ago and left them EVERYWHERE. Yes are familiar path and beach were blocked now. Ok. But when I drove to our campsite today I cried like a baby. I was in shock. The amount of trees that had been cut in the entire campground was shocking. Not a few, not 50% - more. Although I am grateful for our time there and our memories that will never be forsaken - I am sorry new campers will never know it former beauty. Maybe you can see the lake now. May be that was the point. But our slice of paradise is gone.

There were no showers at this location and only vault toilets, which I was weary of. Even so, it wasn't too bad as we were there only two nights. It got quite dark at night, especially since there was a fire restriction- no campfire. There aren't any hiking trails that I know of, but there is a reservoir close by if you want to swim or do other water activities. Be aware there is very limited cell phone coverage and there are no stores close by.

We brought jet skis and rafts and did not get to use them. Our first night went smoothly, not too chilly and our campsite was clean and dry and we loved our fire pit. However, the weather changed in the early morning the following day and it proceeded to pour down the rest of the weekend. It was 50 degrees or less with wind and we were trying to get on the lake, it's also important to note that there is a bit of a current, so visitors should be careful, especially with children. Our camp host Michael was friendly overall and helpful when we ran out of lighter fluid. I can not stress this enough; create a checklist and pack accordingly!!! There is no store except back in Foresthill, an hour and a half drive up the windy roads. Double up on the essentials like fire wood, lighter fluid, gas for coals, and hand sanitizer! I found it odd that there were some bathrooms with sinks and others without. Also, there are one toilet bathrooms and bathrooms with 2 stalls, but you have to look all over for them. I was grateful we had no wildlife run ins except for the occasional raccoon and giant spider. It's a very remote and quiet campground, I loved that we had no reception because it's forced our group to be present and enjoy the wilderness. I don't know if I would return to this campground because of the bathrooms and it's distance on windy narrow roads, but it was an experience I am glad I had!

It's a beautiful place, but I had a few issues on my last particular trip. First, all the host staff that I dealt with were VERY rude and accusatory. My space (102) was advertised for a 30' RV plus 1 vehicle. My RV is 24' and barely fit, which didn't allow my vehicle to be parked on the pavement easily. Immediately after unhooking, several staff rushed over and literally screamed at me telling me I needed to park on the pavement or that I'll be fined and towed. I had 2 wheels on torn up dirt, barely off the pavement. I debated them stating what their site advertised, to no avail. So, I ended up getting my truck between two large trees and an inch from my RV to make it work because the main road is a good distance from the campground. I made it work, but the way the staff treated me was disrespectful and rude to say the least. My group had several other brushes with the staff and said the same thing with their encounters. You'd think that being a host at this campground would be a vacation-like work and total utopia but apparently not. My other issue is because the lake is a over a hill a ways from the campground, they only have one small parking lot that they make you pay extra to use, even if you're staying there. We got yelled at for taking 2 minutes to unload our beach stuff. So, a loading zone would be nice. Not sure if I'll be back, there's plenty of other campground where I don't get disrespected.
