We are locals to this restaurant and it is by far my favorite sushi restaurant. I have tried sushi many other places around the country and so far this restaurant has remained my favorite. Chose this place to celebrate our anniversary. we tried Tokyo last month so we wanted to try this one out. Definitely thought it was a place where they cook in front of you but we walked in and I was completely wrong. Oops. The place is pretty small but it can still accommodate a decent number in one group. We were instantly greeted. There was only ONE waitress for the entire restaurant and there were a lot of customers (For Albany's standards that is) so I felt really bad for her. About an hour later, that's when another waiter and waitress showed up. We were sat fairly quickly (you get to pick your own table). We only resorted to one table because the other ones were t cleaned off yet. But the moment we sat down, the table was insanely sticky. That's when we decided to just take our food to go. The salad looked really limp and the soup was straight up chicken broth mixed with beef broth with one mushroom The food itself was a little bit more promising. The noodles were not good and the chicken didn't taste like chicken... but the fried rice and shrimp was decent. I got one broccoli in my veggies and the rest onions, yay. The ONLY thing that was good was the sushi (we got the shogun roll and the volcano roll). That's the ONLY reason I'd come back here. Our waitress and the sushi are the only ones that deserve the stars. Other than that, I highly recommend going to Tokyo Restaurant instead. read more

First visit and they were quite busy for a weeknight, at least half of the patrons were college kids. The restaurant was also understaffed, which led to service that was a bit slow. I ordered two sushi rolls and a side of fried rice. Both sushi rolls were outstanding! I ordered the Baked Shrimp Killer roll (superb and a new fav!) and the Robert's roll (fresh and flavorful!). Unfortunately, the side of fried rice was bland, clumpy, & greasy and I only could give it two bites before I pushed it to the side. The inside of the restaurant certainly nothing fancy, but overall appeared clean. I will definitely return for their incredible sushi. read more

I have eating here many times the past couple of months and it's just not good anymore. The service is not good and the sushi chefs are slow. I did not get my sushi until after we had finished our hibachi and got to go boxes after asking multiple times for it! The tables all around us who got there after us got theirs before me. The prices have got even higher and the portions have got smaller. The waitress was not friendly and told us to sit anywhere but then made us move. The tables are all super close so I feel like I'm talking to the table next to us. read more

Shogun goes up and down depending on how busy they are and what staff are present. I've had some really terrible dealings with this restaurant in the past, and I've had some really great encounters. This restaurant has great service but the food has gone downhill since they got new owners. The yum-yum sauce, ranch for salad and the rice is all very different. They don't seem like they are getting as many customers with this change either. I very much enjoy eating here and I used to be a daily customer but something needs to change! read more

Not my favorite place.... first time trying this restaurant out and there's a few things I didn't like. The sushi grade was average at best and inconsistent what I mean is I don't think the entire roll came from one piece of fish almost like some of it was scraped, I had a A selection of a few of their special rolls the "Alfredo"- gross "fiesta"-decent and the "Verizon"- the best of the 3 but still just okay also two yellow tail rolls which was also just okay. I've been eating Shoguns for about 12 years and I've moved around quite a bit in that time. This is basically the one place I *need* to eat at when I'm in Albany. The entrees are a bit on the salty/high sodium side BUT it's consistently awesome and the portion sizes are so good my husband and I share a plate. The sushi is excellent. So delicious! Fresh to order and really fun to watch them craft together. I always get the Sunset roll, which is yummy perfection. Love this place! read more

If your in the mood for Japanese and find youself in Albany, GA then I guess Shogun is your stop. I decided to get sushi here but they also had other Japanese fair including Hibachi. The place was backed and I was forced to sit at the Sushi bar where I received decent, but not spectacular, service. I got a chef's choice sushi combo that came with a spicy tuna roll and several pieces of nigiri. A green salad and mushroom soup was also included. The sushi was mediocre, especially the spicy tuna. Instead of actually spicing the tuna they added some type of hot mayonaise to the top of it. Yuck. The nigiri was okay and ranged from tuna, to salmon, to imitation crab stick. If I lived in Albany I would come back, but I wouldn't go out of my way. read more

This place is TERRIBLE. Do not recommend coming on a Friday night. My sisters and I were one of the first ones here & we arrived at 6:30, the waitress for to put our order in, ignored us for 2 hours and I had to get a manager to put our food in a to-go box Bc we did not leave until 9:00. I enjoy this place in off hours. The sushi is good and the staff treats us well. Drinks are well made, so sayeth the wife (I don't drink) and they are really good about catering to special dietary restrictions. The owner is great and has always bent over backwards to be helpful. I'm usually not fond of takeout sushi but they do a good job of packing it up and venting the boxes so you don't arrive at your destination with soggy tempura. The only reason I gave it a one star was because the food is not bad. The service and attitude from the staff is horrible. They rush rush rush everything. First off, I will say that I am not a sushi eater. However, my boyfriend is. I took him here for dinner one evening and after looking over the menu, he ordered the "Verizon Roll" which has multiple types of tuna in it, avocado, and something else (sadly, I can't remember). I stuck with the hibachi chicken. My entree came with a soup and salad starter. I really enjoyed the little salad. When our food arrived, everything looked great. My chicken was delicious, it came with a ginger-based dipping sauce and a yellow, creamy sauce. Also, there is fried rice, lo mein, and stir fried vegetables that come with it. I learned that if you do not want one of the three sides, you can exchange one of them for a second portion of another side. My boyfriend FLIPPED over his sushi. He is from Atlanta, so he has had good quality sushi, yet upon a few bites of Shogun's sushi, he exclaimed that this was the best sushi that he has ever had. He enjoyed his roll so much that he ordered a second one to go. A month after our Shogun experience, we were eating seafood/sushi in a nice restaurant in Alpharetta, GA. Once the meal was finished, we were leaving and my boyfriend said, "You know what, that was good, but the sushi from Shogun in Albany is still my favorite." So, if you are looking for sushi in Albany, this is your place. If you are with someone who enjoys sushi, but you don't, this is your place, too! The wait staff is also very kind. read more

The first time I came here it was good, so I came back with my husband. The menu is unorganized and so unclear. I carefully picked my sushi roll with no avocado, because I am allergic. After ordering, the sushi came out. I noticed there was avocado in it so I told the lady. She wasn't helpfull at all and tried to argue with me that the sushi roll always have avocado in it. She brought the menu and pointed at the "California roll, fried with blabla". So I was like, there's no avocado listed. She was like "no, in California roll there is avocado". I was so strucked by her demanding tone, her trying to be right instead of being costumer friendly. She didn't even want to make me a new roll, so I ended up picking it out of the sushi myself. Didn't enjoy my food at all, after her trying to argue. So unfriendly... She just lost some great customers. read more

Hit and miss. We had one of the shrimp rolls and I am so sorry I cannot remember the name because it was so so good and I will have it again.
