Call me a conspiracy theorist, but why are most of these four- and five-star reviews written by those who have written few other reviews? Am I the only one to suspect this is staged? Things started off well -- I squared away an appointment within a week of calling and upon arrival, was greeted by a nice receptionist. Dr. Khozein seemed nice too at first. However, upon seeing that I still have my wisdom teeth, she remarked I should get them removed as "most people get them removed because they are hard to keep clean." "Are mine dirty?" "Well no." "Then how about we just leave them alone." She proceeded to tell me about flossing every day and that I should use Listerine. As if I have never visited a dentist before. She also proceeded to poke and prod my gums worse than any other "cleaning" involved in the past, to the point that they were sore for days. And yes, I go to the dentist once every summer and winter; I'm no noob. I was also in the military, and not even the angry Lt. Colonel who assaulted my gums in boot camp was as rough as this visit was. The absurdity reached a new peak when Dr. Khozein stated, "Your insurance is very good. You have a $5000 limit for this year -- you should use it or it goes to waste." Uh what? I also have a $300,000 liability policy for my car insurance- should I go drive it into a brick wall to make the most of it? Considering how there is absolutely nothing wrong with my teeth, nor did she recommend any procedures for the future, what exactly would this insurance be paying for, other than lining her pockets? It certainly isn't to pay for the staff at her clinic, because it consists of the receptionist...and her. The visit and the whole setup left me untrusting of her. And when you have someone conduct invasive procedures that affect your health, you want somebody you can trust, right? And yes, these are all direct quotes. My job at work is to remember direct quotes. I wish I were making this up. I have been going to Dr. Khozein for about five years, and I will continue going back. She is extremely attentive, knowledgable, and helpful. I have experienced minor discomfort during a few of the cleaning sessions, but I chalk that up to my personal responsibility or lack thereof. I won't assign blame of my discomfort to Dr. Khozein; instead, I should heed her advice--and that of countless other dentists--and floss every day. Dr. Khozein is (thankfully) everything the reviews said she was! I'm so glad I found her on here and made an appointment to visit for a cleaning. I visited the good folks at DC Dental Spa before for a cleaning and exam 6 months beforehand. While they took good care of me, they didn't accept my (major) dental insurance so a follow-up with them was unlikely unless I was unable to find an equally good alternative under my coverage. Dr. Khozein was not only listed as a provider, but also had huge fans on Yelp so I made the call and got into her chair. She is quite the character, and the arch-nemesis of (still-in) wisdom teeth, but she takes ownership and sees herself as a partner in the welfare of your dental hygiene and health. What really sealed the deal for me was the quote I got for the other items on my checklist which came in HUNDREDS of dollars below the rates quoted from Dental Spa even BEFORE insurance coverage. I have since referred friends and co-workers to the former Howard Universty Dental student (HU!) who have also become happy customers benefitting from Dr. Khozein's wisdom and expertise on prevention. She is really empathetic about how her services will affect your bottom-line and is completely transparent about the finances involved. I love this. Your wallet/pocketbook and your teeth will too. - RECENT UPDATE- I had a slight dental emergency come up and needed to see an endodontic asap. Dr. Shokoufeh rocks! My wife and I had cleanings with her yesterday and our teeth felt brand-new after! Other dentists' cleanings seem superficial after hers; we never knew our teeth could look so white! She also does a great job explaining various procedures and lets you know exactly what your insurance covers, allowing you to make informed decisions. Dr Khozein is the first dentist ever in my 30 years of life on this planet to do a filling without any pain whatsoever. She is really informative, helpful, and most importantly, she works fast. I could not recommend her enough. She also has an assistant that actually walks you through your dental insurance and explains things, which not only helps clear up any costs but they work with you to make sure you don't get overcharged by your insurance company. I'm another one of those "haven't been to the dentist in a while" guys and was definitely encouraged by the reviews I saw on Yelp. All I can say is that Dr. Khozein is definitely all she's cracked up to be both on these reviews and on those I've seen on other sites. I did have to wait just a little longer than most people, about 30 minutes, not a huge deal because 1) it was my first visit and 2) the office staff is incredibly respectful of your time, letting you know when they expect you to be done. In fact, I had no problem going in the middle of the day because they can pretty much pinpoint within 15 minutes of when I'll be done. Dr. Khozein, herself is a character. She really does care about the long-term well-being of her patients and acknowledges the fact that DC is a transient city. She takes the time to explain everything up front, including billing, how she does referrals to dental specialists and how what she is about to do both does fit and should fit into your overall dental health regime. Definitely come with any questions that might be lingering in your mind about ANYTHING dental-health related. Seriously, she's like the mythbusters equivalent of dental professionals. She cares, she's good at what she does and she's sympathetic to the fact that not everyone comes in with a spotless dental record. I never rate these experiences, but my visits with Dr. Khozein were so uncomfortable, unprofessional and offensive that i had to review. I've since switched Dentists and I am so much happier for it. Patients be warned! I first scheduled an appointment because I needed fill ins. I was warmly greeted by the receptionist and promptly sent in for my appointment. Dr. Khosein was at first welcoming, but soon after examining me, started complaining about my dental hygiene; not flossing as much as I should, my insurance plan and overall acting annoyed to work on me. Then she said if i vote for Trump, i won't have such a crappy plan. By this time my mouth was already set open, so I was unable to respond. The radio was on in the background discussing race relations in America and she kept rolling her eyes saying that it's all made up. She said they were lying about detention centers and immigration concerns. She continued to push her political views while aggressively drilling away at my teeth. I was honestly shocked. She is also an immigrant, but so vehemently despised their struggle to enter this country. Regardless of her opinion, I would have preferred that she kept it to herself. I was scheduled for two other appointments where she told me i needed gum cleaning and a crown, so i had to see her again. I figured if i continued to not engage with her when she pushed her Political views, she would take the hint to be more professional. I was honestly so shocked by the first experience, i thought it couldn't possible continue. I was wrong. In the next visit, she criticized my appearance. I have very curly hair and she asked if i brush it ever and if so i need to brush my teeth too. She knows i brush my teeth 2x a day, i don't know why she was berating me. She also said all the women now, bleach their teeth and that i should too. I have always been complemented on my teeth and smile. They're a natural shade of white. I've always made sure to present myself well and that is why i went to her to fix my cavities. She had good reviews. I regret it. This was such a disappointing and extremely expensive experience. To top it, my new dentist told me that whoever did my crown did not fit it properly. Because of that, i have a gap between the two where food could get stuck. It needs to be redone. He suggested i go back and make Dr. Khozein correct it, but i honestly don't want her to work on me again. Dr. Khozein has exhibited great care in my treatment. Each time she noted a concern, she would take out the mirror, and have me examine it. Even while fixing a cavity, she stopped midway to let me see what is going on in a mirror, while she explained things. I have a lot of problems with my teeth and I have had so many traumatic experiences with dentists. I am so glad I was referred to Dr Khozein. I am so happy to have someone who I feel at ease with, who I can trust with my teeth. First, the young lady who answers the phone, Solo, is so nice and friendly. Making an appointment was really easy. I walked in and the office was beautiful. So much beautiful art--but you might not care about that--I like pretty things. I did not have to wait longer than 2 minutes when I arrived. My first appointment was for a cleaning. Dr Khozein actually does the cleaning herself! She is super nice and does an excellent job of taking her time and explaining what to expect. She also emphasizes the importance of dental hygiene and preventative care. I went to her about seven years ago. I thought she was wonderful too, until a few years ago when I found out that a tooth she had worked on was rotting. She removed a cavity and left decay in the tooth. As a result, i had to have a root canal a few years ago and recently had a crown put on the tooth. I think this speaks for itself. Dr. Khozein is awesome. I have been going to her since spring of 2006. She really cares about her patients. Her cleanings are extremely thorough. Yes your mouth will be a *little* sore when you're done, and you'll have a little bleeding, but this is because she's doing a more in-depth cleaning than many dentists. In fact, all dentists will do this more in-depth cleaning but it costs a lot more than a regular cleaning. It's standard with Dr. Khozein. She is phenomenal with insurance too. She is an expert at billing and making sure she is looking out for your best interests when it comes to your insurance benefits or Flex Spending dollars. In July of 2007 I woke up in the middle of the night with tooth pain you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy. It came out of nowhere and nothing would stop it. Dr. Khozein got me in first thing in the morning to check it out and prescribed me pain medication. She refered me out to a root canal specialist who got me in that same day. I have since referred at least 10 coworkers to her (my office is right down the street from her and she takes our insurance, Care First Blue Cross Blue Shield) They all love her too. Mike read more

I went to Dr. Khozein for my first dental exam since I got new insurance because of her glowing reviews on here. However, it turned out to be the worst appointment of my life. First of all, I was there for over an hour for a standard cleaning and x-rays. This would have been ok had she been thorough, but I spent a significant amount of time sitting in the chair with my mouth full of equipment while she gossiped with the receptionist, chatted with someone in the waiting room, and flirted with a random guy that had stopped by to say hi. When she finally came back to do my cleaning, she was so rushed it was incredibly painful. She used the metal pick between my teeth so quickly and brusquely that it felt like she murdered my gums, which continued to bleed for over 3 hours after my appointment. I felt my teeth would have been better served had she spent more than two minutes cleaning them, as opposed to the full 20 minutes she spent lecturing me about flossing more. On my way out, the receptionist informed me that I had "bad" insurance and that I would be paying out of pocket for the cavity filling that I had scheduled the following week. That didn't sound right to me, especially since my insurance listed Dr. Khozein as a preferred provider. So the day before I went into my follow-up appointment, I called my insurance to ask if they would cover the cavity. They put me on hold for two minutes while they called Khozein's office to get the procedure code for my cavity so they could tell me exactly how much I would be paying out of pocket. Not only did Dr. Khozein's office give me incorrect information (my insurance DOES cover cavities), but Dr. Khozein was so offended that my insurance dare to call her that she called me up after hours to cancel my appointment! She berated me for over 10 minutes on the phone about how in all her years as a medical professional she had never been called by an insurance company to verify a procedure code and that they had no business asking what procedure she had scheduled for me or how much it would cost and that she didn't feel comfortable dealing with me if my insurance was going to be "so nosy." I was shocked. I confirmed with my insurance that it is standard practice for them to verify procedures, and it is definitely their business, as well as my own, to know what is being done to me and how much it will cost. Not only was she extremely rude and unprofessional as to berate me and cancel my appointment due to one question from my insurance company, but I wonder what she is doing that would make her so afraid to talk to them. read more

I haven't been to a dentist in 5 years. My teeth have been hurting, and the last time I went to a dentist I also hadn't been in 2 years. The last time was the MOST painful dental experience of my life, and I have a very high tolerance for pain. Today at Dr. Khozein's, I couldn't believe how little pain there was. She was straight forward, diligent, and thorough. The cleaning was quick, I don't have any cavities, and through my discount plan it was extremely affordable. I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Khozein, and am actually going to be going to the dentist every 6 months from here on out like I'm supposed to. read more

Thought I was crazy until I saw several other 2 and 1 star reviews. I went to Dr. K at the recommendation of a friend, who loves her. She saw me quickly (and I mean QUICKLY), for a cleaning, all the while lamenting that I didn't have dental insurance and was paying out of pocket, and how there was a cleaning procedure that was $1000 that she would do if I had insurance. I told her I could pay out of pocket for anything that was medically necessary, but I didn't wish to have a fancy treatment just because. She insisted my teeth were too dirty to clean in one sitting (I've never had this happen before, and they had been cleaned 10 months earlier) and so I had to come back. She said she wouldn't charge for this second session. I came back for my second session without having confirmed my appointment--BIG MISTAKE. I told the receptionist I was a little early; she didn't have me sign in, and I sat waiting for about 15 minutes after my appointment time, even though no one else was there. This is when I should've figured out something was wrong, but you know, you trust your doctor's office to run things better, you know? Finally they told me the person before me clearly wasn't coming, so why didn't I come back. Dr. K told me she'd take a full head x-ray (haven't had one of those done since the orthodontist when I had braces), and that it was covered by my insurance. I said, "I don't have dental insurance." She insisted it was covered because they use it to identify me in the case of utterly destroyed remains. So I said okay, got on the scanner, and she started to administer the x-ray. At that time, the patient who had the appointment after mine showed up. She gave her name, and there was this big confusion. THAT was when the receptionist finally asked who I was. Turns out, she and Dr. K thought I was the patient with the appointment after mine. So I wound up with a rushed (and *rough* cleaning--I, too had the experience of fast, painful cleaning), and on top of that, Dr. K saddled me with a $250 bill for the two cleanings (even though she said she wouldn't charge for the second) and the x-ray she wasn't supposed to do. All the while she cleans your teeth, Dr. K talks about how little patients can afford to pay, and how she would do different things, and how much treatments cost. She seems like a sales person, not a doctor--I was actually compelled to check her board license with D.C.'s records (it *is* there, so that' part is okay.) But I've never met a less professional dentist in my life. Dentistry is a branch of medicine, it's not a car dealership where you get upsold for more options. I felt that Dr. K. looked at her business as a moneymaking opportunity, not a medical practice concerned with people's health. Obviously, I didn't go back. read more

In my opinion, Dr. Shokoufeh Khozein belongs to a rare group of dentists who take away your fear of seeing a dentist! I had not been to a dentist in many years and because of my unconscious habit of tooth grinding, my two front teeth had become almost transparent! I was impressed how patiently she listened to my explanations of my dental history prior to performing an oral examination and taking several x-rays to determine possible cavities or infections. Not only she saved my two front teeth, but also addressed other problem areas that needed immediate attention. In all, I needed six fillings and I felt hardly any pain or discomfort during my treatment and without any anesthesia (I don't like anesthesia!) What makes her so much different than other dentists I have visited in the past is the way she puts her patients at ease by explaining each step and procedure and what she is doing and for what purpose. Her personality and her refreshing sense of humor are also instrumental in keeping the patients comfortable.. Dr. Khozein, is one of the best dentist that I have ever gone to. I have been going to her for the past ten years and she is just awesome!! She cares about her clients and she is very thorough. She explains everything that I needed to know about my insurance company coverage, and my out of pocket expenses. I knew exactly what the cost would be for whatever I was getting done at that time. She is very flexible with scheduling appointments. She is really good about sticking to her schedule appointments as well. If my appointment is at 2:00 she was ready to go at that time. I never had to wait more than five minutes if that. She always explain the procedure of what I was having done at the time. Ask if I had any questions and took her time to answering my question. I never felt rushed at all. She does quality work as well. Usually I choose my doctors etc. close to where I live, but with Dr. K. I will not change going to her. My cleaning wasn't exactly pleasant but i feel that's more my fault as its been awhile since i've seen a dentist, plus i flossed infrequently at best. Under the circumstances Dr.Khozein was thorough and professional and surprisingly my teeth were actually in pretty good shape, they just needed that deep cleaning. My teeth look great and so i don't have to go through it so bad the next time i now brush AND floss every day religiously. Never again. I wrote a previous review stating that I was really thankful for her professional opinion, especially since she saved me from potentially getting way more fillings than I actually needed. However, since my last review, my opinion has changed drastically, and I would hate for other patients to go through the same thing. The short version is that Dr. Khozein's work is quite sloppy and ended up being a headache to fix when I went elsewhere. Additionally, she seems to have a major issue with being timely, and doesn't take responsibility for it. Here's the long story: I needed to get a few fillings, and when I showed up for my appointment, she was running quite late because she was chatting with the patient before me. During the actual procedure, it was quite brutal, although this was my first filling, so I didn't know what to expect. My tooth that she put a clamp on got the outer enamel scraped off because she was being so rough with the instrument, I was bleeding quite a lot (not sure if that could have been prevented), and the whole time she kept telling me how deep my cavity was and kept blaming me for it. Why be so rude about it? When I came back for another filling, she was again over 20 minutes late despite not having any patients in the office. I mentioned to her that I was getting food stuck where she had done the last fillings, and that it was actually quite painful at times and it was nearly impossible to floss. She dismissed my concern and told me that it was my fault for not flossing well enough. I had the other cavities fixed (as she again berated me for letting it happen), and at the end, I noticed that there was a chunk of filling on my tooth. She said she would smooth it out if I came back in a few days. I learned from a friend who has had a ton of cavities filled that this wasn't normal at all - when you leave the office the filling should be all set. So I showed up for a follow-up appointment to fix it, and she was running over a half hour late, again, with no patient ahead of me. Out of frustration, I left. I later received a call from her telling me that I really should come back to have the filling "touched up," and there was no apology on her end for not being on-time for my appointment. Instead she told me that she was hardly late at all. Since then, I went to a different dentist. When she took X-rays of my teeth, she seemed quite bewildered as to how someone had done such a poor job with the fillings. I'm no dentist, but even I could tell that the filling wasn't done properly. I've since had to get that filling redone correctly and I have to get the another filling redone because there's a leak in the filling. I hate to write such a poor review, especially because she offers discounts to students and patients without dental insurance. However, it seems like you get what you pay for, in this case. It is costing me more time and money to get all of this fixed because of a sloppy job. read more

Dr. Khozein was recommended to me by one of my friends and I checked her reviews on Yelp before making an appointment just to be on a safe side. Oh god... they're so true, she was indeed wonderful. I visited Dr. Khozein for a routine cleaning in late Spring 2013. She is a friendly person but I have never had such a hard cleaning, it was definitely rough and unnecessarily so, even for someone who probably had slightly inflamed gums. I swear I was still spitting blood that evening. This was a regular visit about six months after my last dental visit elsewhere. I move a lot and have been to many dentists over the years...this was ROUGH. You can quibble over how rough is rough (rough!) but the thing that concerned me is that prior to any examination beyond a quick look at my mouth, she suggested that I replace ALL of my metal fillings. No indication of any problems with them, no cracking reported, but as a preventive measure. I know that she also did the same with a friend who recommended her. (My friend later decided to not go back any more to this office.) This concerns me and it is not shoot the messenger: she had already checked my insurance and said there was enough left on my policy to cover the treatment. She did this prior to ever seeing my mouth. It turns out that I needed two fillings. I chose to find a new dentist rather than return. read more

This woman was psychotic. On a Friday afternoon, I went in for a routine cleaning. She stabbed my mouth to death, with what she termed as a, "basic cleaning." Throughout the entire cleaning, my eyes were tearing up and I was clenching because of the pain. Mind you, I have zero cavities, I floss daily, and make sure to go to the dentist for my regular cleanings. At the end of the session, she teased that I had survived her tough cleaning sessions. But really, I did NOT survive. After a day, the gums around my lower rear molars started to swell and I could not chew using the back of my mouth. After two days, I started taking ibuprofen every four hours because the pain was becoming unbearable, my jaw was hurting, and my lymph nodes were swollen. Her office is closed on Monday's, so I called the machine, and there was a number for a doctor nearby to go to for emergencies. I called this doctor and he said to come in on Tuesday morning for a 2 minute look. He looked at my mouth and said that it seemed like she had done a, "deep cleaning," and that it would slowly heal on its own. He prescribed a prescription mouth wash to help my gum heal faster. He also told me to rinse with salt water throughout the day. I asked him how it was OK for her to do this, and he explained that it may be a difference in dental philosophy. Bull shit if you ask me. I'm a 28 year old woman and have never had this sort of treatment by any dentist - and I've lived in many areas to try a variety of dentists. Also, I went in for a basic cleaning, not a deep cleaning - so this is inappropriate. She should not be adding on services that I did not request just because I have good insurance that can cover it. Anyways, after another two days of using this mouth rinse routine, I was STILL in horrible pain. At this point, I hadn't been able to eat solid foods for four about 6 days and I was popping pain pillers like they were candy. I decided I needed a third opinion. I found another dentist near my office and when he looked in my mouth he instantly saw that it was a gum infection!! We took xrays to make sure the infection didn't spread to my bones and thankfully that part was fine. He immediately put me on antibiotics, told me to continue the mouth rinse routine, and within a day of the medication I could feel the difference. The swelling went down, the pain was much better, and the swelling of my lymph nodes was gone. It's now 3 days later and I'm back to chewing soft foods and I don't need any pain killers at all. There is still some gum flap that is visibly disconnected from my rear molar indicating a gum pocket. He said I may have to come in for reconstructive gum surgery pending my reaction to the antibiotics. I was so happy when he noticed the problem and gave me a solution, I nearly cried in relief. I do NOT recommend Dr. Khozein because she sent me on a roller coaster ride after what was meant to be a basic cleaning. I did call her office and left a message for them on their machine - seems like they hate having normal hours. Her admin person called me back, and basically told me it was my fault because my teeth were possibly so filthy. I was shocked and dismayed - especially after Dr. Khozein had told me that my teeth were fine and I had no cavities. Dr. Khozein has not called herself to follow up - I'm sure this happens to her all the time considering the other poor reviews I can see on this page. This woman needs to be shut DOWN!!! read more

It has taken me a while to write this but I really feel the need to now. I visited Dr. Khozein in fall 2013 and, aside from the roughest cleaning I've ever experienced, I was informed that I had four cavities. She pointed to them in the X-ray and I assumed she was seeing something I wasn't because I couldn't see anything indicating a cavity. This was shocking because I'd never had a cavity in my life but not impossible since it had been over a year since my last dentist visit. I made the appointments for the fillings but couldn't shake the feeling that something wasn't quite right. I decided to get a second opinion and visited another dentist who informed me that no, I didn't have any cavities at all. I quickly canceled my filling dates with Dr. Khozein and never went back. I've been with the second dentist ever since, and still no cavities. To think that I almost got four fillings for no reason is reason enough for me to share this with others who may visit Dr. Khozein. read more

What else I can say? Dr. Khozein is really awesome. Let's talk about the clinic first. Clean and bright. Unlike others, the clinic is really nice. Waiting time. Usually short. Less than 10 minutes. I usually don't need to wait. I went to see Dr. Khozein at least three times a month since August 2009 until December.(Yes, I did not maintain my teeth properly and had not seen a dentist for years...) If I can recall correctly, I only waited 2 or three times. Each of them was less than 10 minutes. Reservation. The staff there is professional. She called me to confirm my visit the day before my visit day. She updated me my insurance information, which I really appreciate. Dr. Khozein. Very professional. I have been seeing many dentists since I was in a day care center(not this country) I also wore brace twice. Dr. Khozein is one of the tops. She explain to me the procedures very well, she gave me heads up on what we are going to do, and she kept reminding me what I should also do at home. Her skills are so well so that I fell asleep most of the time. Because of this, Dr. Khozein decided to switch my visit time from afternoon to morning. She though the reason that I fell asleep is I was tired. Even the morning visit, I fell asleep. The seat is comfortable. When she was working on my teeth, she also played classic music. Then, she realized that I fell asleep becuase it's very comfortable. I did not feel pain at all. (I asked her to have a seat and have the music on to see if she can fall asleep as well. It turned out she never lied on that seat...! Try it Dr.) I highly recommend Dr. Khozein. read more

Just switched dentists after waiting in the hallway for about twenty minutes knocking on a locked door. My appointment was for 12:30. I arrived at 12:20 (courteous I thought) and no one showed up until 12:38. Call me picky, but I find that very inconsiderate. Thanks to my smartphone I was able to spend the idle time searching for other dentists in the area and made an appointment. Customer lost. Dr. Khozein does not listen to her patients' concerns and preferences. If a given procedure is covered by the insurance, she has to do it even if there are better alternatives for the patient's health. It seems that her commercial interest is above the patients' well being. Or if her approach is not profit driven, then it means she does not know about the better alternatives, i. e. she is not a competent dentist. read more

Dr. Khozein is a patient, realistic and careful dentist who works hard to make sure her patients understand every step of each procedure, the health of their teeth, and what can and can't be done. Her office is clean, receptionist is nice and efficient, and I've almost always gotten my appointment started on time. It's only Dr. Khozein and the receptionist, so she does the cleanings herself, and in that way really gets to know what's going on with your teeth. I've been going to her for about four months and have been very happy with the results. read more

She is great. I find it strange that people complain about getting advice to have wisdom teeth removed or to save money. Don't kill the messenger. She really cares about her patients, including their physical and financial well-being. I've seen her for years and wouldn't see another dentist. I've had dentists in many cities, including others in DC. She's the best of them. read more
